Good Evening,
QSB needs to have a metric associated with it. Today it was slow
and covered about 4 S units. On some ops it was as deep but there was
less variation. The fluctuations were never fast enough to cut up
characters so copy was easy enough. On twenty meters reports were S6 at
Good Evening,
It was cool and sunny this week, perfect for splitting wood and
marking the last property line. Now it is foggy, wet, and cool. All
that firewood makes a cozy fire. The loggers have moved in some heavy
equipment with more due on Monday. For the next month I won't need to
Good Evening,
QSB was more intense this week. S1 to S7 reports were common. There
were also many contesters passing through. I was able to find open
frequencies though and held them, more or less, for each net. Mostly
mild weather with one report of snow. From what I have read the fires
Good Evening,
Remember the time change this week. Both nets will start an hour
earlier if you use your local time as a reference. But if you use UTC
to reckon time there is no change. I tried this last year and it better
fit the propagation than did the previous method where the local
Good Evening,
QSB was very slow and not very deep; a little faster on forty
meters. Both bands were quiet, so quiet it wasn't easy to find anyone.
The smoke and fires are creating lots of problems in California.
Hopefully the recent cold front will reach them and slow the winds.
Good Evening,
The time change is next week, November 3rd. I'd just as soon they left
it in either one place or the other and never changed it again. This
time of year it's difficult to tell if it's day or night anyway :)
However, there was a little sun this week. The blue sky was visible
Good Evening,
Both bands were fairly quiet with little QSB. It was nice to hear
about sunshine when I was sitting in dense fog. By the way I checked my
stereo and found I had heard the CW signal when I was listening to 910
AM. 910 and 1817 kHz are related. Now to check K7RAT's
Good Evening,
I was listening to the ALCS game 6 on 750 AM. It was loud but I
kept hearing tones. I thought I was imagining CW from the noise. It
wasn't repeated often enough to catch more than a character or two once
or twice an inning. Then in the 4th I got K7??T. I put that into
Good Evening,
Conditions are holding at less than desirable. QSB was less which
normally means the sun is quiet. The lack of signal strength enhanced
that assessment. Twenty meters was shorter this week. Normally
California is too close. But Texas and Nevada on forty meters was a
Good Evening,
A cool week let me process more wood. Four truck loads and I am
only half done. The woodpeckers enjoy when I peel off the outer layer
of bark. They find all sorts of tasty things to eat. A hungry gray jay
found its way into the house and tried all of the windows to get
Good Evening,
The cool weather has brought the mushrooms to life. I hiked to the
SE corner of my land and found many species ripening. One area was
carpeted with chanterelle mushrooms. They were easy to spot now that
the ferns are down; a bright gold against the brown background. I
Good Evening,
Twenty meters was more surprising than last week. My first call got
no response. But the second one brought Roy, K6XK. I called for more
but again no response. I should have known it would be tough. I
started the net on 14050 but had someone ask if the frequency was in
Good Evening,
The seasons are progressing rapidly. Only a few days into autumn
with frost a day away. Even though I have a few grasshopper tendencies
mostly I'm an ant. Multiple piles of wood just need to get to the
house. When the frost knocks down most of the ferns I can find them.
Good Evening,
I had to move from the announced frequencies slightly to accommodate
all of the contesters on both 20 and 40 meters. Both bands had a lot of
noise but the signals were clear. Only a few stations were effected by
QSB. The sun angle is changing rapidly as summer departs and
Good Evening,
The summer has passed quickly; tomorrow will be the last nets of the
season. Conditions have been improving slightly over the last month. A
stream of solar wind is due on the 23rd, the first day of autumn. That
will help conditions for the rest of the week.
It has been
Good Evening,
Both nets had strong signals with limited QSB. Some space noise
with a little from thunder storms. Brian checked in to the forty meter
net with his KX2 at 10 watts on an AXE antenna. He was very loud,
occasionally I had to turn him down. I enjoy hearing how all of you are
Good Evening,
Autumn began this week. Leaves started falling, animals changed
behavior, and the spiders got very busy. The bow hunters are also out
in force. Won't be long before the snow starts blowing. Next week I
plan to move a lot more of the large tree onto a wood pile next to the
Good Evening,
Conditions were different from last week. The noise was less and
the QSB was almost gone. All the signals I copied were pretty easy to
copy. The problem was those were the only stations I could hear at
all. There was a hint of a sunspot this week but that was not enough
Good Evening,
It was a good week to split wood. The deer path was disrupted when
this tree came down. Now they have to walk all the way around it. It's
sad. So I'm busy giving them more options. Throwing the wood uphill
gives me time to think. More like not think. Just keep splitting

Good Evening,
My ears are still ringing and it has been over an hour since I got
done with the second net. At the end I was trying to invent calls out
of the noise. A solar stream is hitting the earth right now causing
lots of noise and QSB. A few signals were ESP to S6. Luckily the ESP
Good Evening,
The bear berries are getting ripe. That means the grouse will soon
be out. The hot weather in the middle of the week excited the spiders
into a frenzy of orb spinning. Always around face level. Once you
clear a trail you may have twenty minutes before there is a new one.
Good Afternoon,
It got hot this week. As the temperature rose to the mid 90s the
humidity dropped from its summer normal of ~ 50% down to 20%. At the
same time the wind rose from 5 mph to 25 mph. I had never seen the fire
danger sign increase by two steps in one day until this week.
Good Evening,
I got to watch a logger fall a very large tree exactly where he said
it would land. He laid it down between two long rows of trees with only
a few live limbs broken. After he left I got out my long tape and a
shorter one just in case. Laying down made it much easier to
Good Evening,
Conditions lately have not been great. QSB is constant which is an
oxymoron. The noise level is not very high but neither are the signal
levels so it's a wash. The sun continues its inactivity.
I was not able to get to last week's net report so we'll start with that.
Good Evening,
It was a cool week so I spent my time inside working on plumbing. I
needed to find a tool so went to the shed where they're stored. Then my
eyes wandered to the shelves of books. Three bankers boxes of my Analog
collection came in the house with me. I began reading science
Good Evening,
The fire danger has been very low this year. I don't think we ever
entered a true dry season. Today it rained like it was the middle of
November. In about two weeks the tree which supports my main antenna
has to come down. I told them to drop it early in the week so I can

two parts
Good Evening,
Both nets had medium to deep QSB. Reports of S3 to S7 were common.
QRN was in a steady hiss with a few crackles of summer storms on 40
meters. Hopefully our pleading to the ion provider did not go in vain.
We may have to sacrifice a metaphor to propitiate it.
