Bill,
I wonder if the Elecraft K3 has the I/O signals to easily implement a
remote head. This is a feature which has been requested in the past and I
think that Elecraft even had a prototype at one time but it died a death -
could be wrong on this last point.I too have hoped for this feature as
implemented with the Orion II but Elecraft has supplied so much it is
churlish for me to look for more.God, an improved AGC for CW, P3 SVGA
adapted for data modes - it is hard to keep up with Elecraft. They are
such an unusual company in their close links to the customer base and
willingness to oblige when they can. We are a fortunate bunch to have
chosen their product.

The hot keys software is supposed to implement some of what I want in a
remote control head but the confession is that I have not tried this yet.
Interaction with Micro keyer II or Wintest is my worry but I understand this
is not supposed to be a problem.

I wonder if the K3's (K3/0) front panel will ever be available as a
stand alone device similar the Kenwood TS-480?

No big box behind the panel, just a line to the transceiver - which is
operated remote from where it is mounted on the side of my desk. It is
very handy to be able to move that control panel all over my desk. This
is similar to the Yaesu 857D and the Icom 706 and 7000 series.

It is not rocket science - just another purchase for the K3.

Re: [Elecraft] Microphones - Yaesu MH-31

2012-07-27 Thread Don Wilhelm
Steve,

The only thing I can say is that there is more than enough audio drive
with my MH3 microphone.
Does your MH-31 work with plenty of audio on your FT-817 or FT-857?

My numbering scheme was consistent with a left to right convention
looking into the jack opening (like the diagram in the FT-817 manual.
If you were looking at the end of the plug, the numbers would be reversed.

 Don,

Your numbering was backwards from what I used, but I translated the numbers
from the other direction (made 8 = 1, 1 = 8, and the others in between to
match) and got the same pin designations and wire colors. However, I took
(your numbers) pin 2 and pin 5 and grounded them to the shell together (pin
2 shows as mic ground in the schematics so I figured I'd ground it to the
regular ground also). After looking over your numbers I moved the regular
ground (your pin 2) to ring 2. This gave me the same results as before.

If I crank the power up I can get some deflection in the power meter, but I
can't get the ALC meter to budge on max mic gain and max compression.

I just tested the output with a pair of headphones on. I took the
compression off (0) and as I increased it the audio volume from the monitor
 circuit got louder.

Just out of curiosity - what are some others using for microphones and what
settings are you finding work for those microphones?

My experience with other rigs is that if the mic gain is too high the audio
distorts, likewise if the compression is too high it distorts. Here I have
both gain and compression max'ed out and seemingly not getting enough. That
doesn't make much sense to me, but I know the KX3 is a different rig. Is
that perhaps a change that can be made in software? Or am I at the limits of
 the hardware?

[Elecraft] P3 Vfo Blips

Hello gang,

I have a number of blips (birdies) surrounding my VFO A display line on the P3

meters but more down in the noise on other bands.
Is this normal behavior…to be expected?

[Elecraft] K3 transmit audio cuts out

2012-07-27 Thread Keith Heimbold
While operating last night on 20m on my K3 serial 1391, I had an issue with my
transmit audio cutting out during PTT transmit. Also power output
simultaneously dropped out completely in mid sentence. I could see this both on
the power meter and hear it on monitor.

I currently use a Heil proset 4 and a heil hand switch with that rig. I then
decided to switched headsets and switch to my heil proset 5 and my foot switch
which is on my other K3 to determine if it was an issue with headset / PTT
switch combination. Upon transmitting it continued to cut out the audio and
power. I was alerted by the ham I was communicating with that I was having an
issue with my audio. This issue continued to persist so I decided to shutdown
the system.

My configuration last night also consisted of this K3 unit being connected to
my Yaesu Quadra amplifier to my SteppIR three element Yagi. I was operating at
about 500W.

This is the first time I have had any issue with this K3 unit though I do
experience some unusual receive issues with spurious and higher noise levels
with this unit versus my other K3 and my KX3.

Turns out that I am coincidentally sending up my other K3 1526 to Elecraft
today for several mods and some additional features to be added. I would like
to get the older 1391 unit working before sending 1526 up north.

Any thoughts on what might be happening or troubleshooting options would be
great.

Thanks,

Keith

Re: [Elecraft] K3 transmit audio cuts out

2012-07-27 Thread Don Wilhelm
Kieth,

In cases like that, the first things to check are the external cables -
in your particular case, the PTT.
If you are using the mic jack PTT, try the one on the back panel - if
that cures the problem check your cables again.

The other possibility is that something happened in your antenna system
and you are experiencing RF feedback. Run the K3 barefoot into a dummy
load - if the condition persists into a dummy load, then you can
conclude that the K3 might be to blame.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 - Remote Control Head

2012-07-27 Thread Charles Sanders
If what you are looking for is a multi-function remote tuning knob consider
using the Shuttle Pro 2 by Contour Design at
http://retail.contourdesign.com/

I've used this device in that role in my mobile contesting setup to control
the K3 which is in the rear of the vehicle and the operator is in the front
passenger seat. The Shuttle Prov 2 has a nice set of 15 buttons and a
tuning knob. The buttons on the Shuttle Pro can be mapped to any function
keys supported by the software you are using and also supports macros which
combine multiple function keys. There is a brief description on this page
of my website http://www.no5w.com/CQxK3RemoteKit.html describing how I am
using it with CQ/X.

Of course the above approach requires an intermediary in the form of
software running on a PC. If what you are interested in is a standalone
remote that connects (essentially) directly to the K3, an Android
smartphone can serve as the display and controlling device and can be
interfaced wirelessly to the K3 over Bluetooth via a small PIC-based board
(Android IOIO) from SparkFun Electronics https://www.sparkfun.com. Some
details of the interface and of a prototype are available at
http://www.no5w.com/CQxK3-AndroidInterface.html. It should be noted that
this is a work in progress. I believe there are others who have carried
this idea even further so look around and see what you can find.

correct UPS tracking code for my KX3 shipment. I hurried inside to open the

UPS says there must have been a mix of two or more shipments along the way.
They will send me a new address labels for the box I have received and I

Re: [Elecraft] Raspberry Pi (a 35 dollar Computer) Linux and Elecraft K3, K2, KX3 etc

2012-07-27 Thread Holger Schurig
They Raspberry Pi may be fine. Or it might be not. Because it's an
extremely limited device.

For example: doesn't have an Audio- (Mic/Line) input. So you need an
USB dongle for it if you want to do any data mode stuff (e.g. with
FLDIGI).

Doesn't have an RTC clock, so always starts at 1st January 1970 on every boot.

Broadcom, the manufacturer of the CPU/SoC combo, is a
kind-of-secretive company. They often don't provide chip
documentation. For more than 7 years the Broadcom WIFI-Chips in the
Linux WLAN stack have been inferior to, say, Intel or Atheros chips.
And yeay, the do that again: you don't get a full datasheet for the
BCM2835 that is used in the Raspberry PI. If you really want the docs,
you need to sign an NDA with Broadcom. But they are snoop: you need to
provide a business model and declare how many chips you will buy from
them. Compare with with TI, for the TI OMAP, where you almost get
everything, downloadable from their Website without registration or
NDA.

Hi,

Since I received my UPS tracking code last week I have been following the
parcel's track through the US, arriving in Germany and then going through
Denmark and Sweden before arriving in Oslo, Norway yesterday. The expected
delivery was next Monday before the end of the day. However, today the
postman arrived with a big parcel from UPS with my name, address and the
correct UPS tracking code for my KX3 shipment. I hurried inside to open the
box and almost had a heart attack. The box is full with clothes. I have got
the wrong box and somebody else has got my KX3, :-(

UPS says there must have been a mix of two or more shipments along the way.
They will send me a new address labels for the box I have received and I
hope they manage to trace the person who has got mine.

A long wait just became even longer.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 - remote control head

2012-07-27 Thread iain macdonnell - N6ML
It should be technically feasible to use the high-speed protocol
that was developed for the RemoteRig solution to implement a remote
control head that talks over a serial connection to the K3. It'd
essentially be a K3/0 in a compact package, suitable for moving around
the desk, or mounting on a vehicle dashboard. The RR boxes wouldn't be
necessary for such short distances - just RS232 (although it'd need to
get power from somewhere too).

Re: [Elecraft] K3 transmit audio cuts out

2012-07-27 Thread Adrian
Keith, From your original post you seemed to say that the signal output
dropped whilst the K3 was still in TX,
i.e. you say during PTT transmit . So was the TX indicator active during
my transmit audio cutting out ?

This would indicate no problem with the ptt, but the audio - signal circuit
chain, or rfi issues. Can you clarify please?

I guess Don interpreted your original post different to myself. I would test
sending dits into a DL for the same period to check
power level consistency before looking at other areas.

Hi Don,

Thanks for the quick recommendation. I will give that a try this morning.

I did a complete switch out of the headset, PTT switch and adapter and
experienced the same cutout. I did consider this being an RFI issue. I was
doing a bit more ragchewing then usual last night.

I will try your recommendations and report back.

In cases like that, the first things to check are the external cables - in
your particular case, the PTT.
If you are using the mic jack PTT, try the one on the back panel - if that
cures the problem check your cables again.

The other possibility is that something happened in your antenna system
and you are experiencing RF feedback. Run the K3 barefoot into a dummy load
- if the condition persists into a dummy load, then you can conclude that
the K3 might be to blame.

I currently use a Heil proset 4 and a heil hand switch with that rig. I

Signalink USB is nothing more than a repackaged $10 USB audio dongle.
It does not provide any USB to serial functions and no access to TxD,
RxD, DTR, RTS. Lance specifically needed TxD and RxD for computer
logging and RTS for advanced PTT.

The alternative to the WestMountain Radio Nomic is a Buxcomm Rascal
with a custom serial cable that splits RxD/TxD to the rig and DTR/RTS
to the Rascal then to the rig.

Here's a similar story about FedEx, with a happier ending.

As a beta tester for the K3, I was sent some new boards by FedEx. It was a
Friday, and I
really wanted to install them over the weekend. I was watching the FedEx site
all day. The
package was out for delivery when suddenly at about 5 PM, up popped
'exception': nobody
home.

I instantly called their 800 number and got a human! She called the driver and
he actually
appeared in about 10 minutes. He apologized, saying that he had been on the
next block.
Since they have GPS systems and since the numbers are not the same from block
to block, I
was suspicious, but happy.

With the rush by hams to using laptops for their ham station (lack of
room is an often cited reason), they will find no Line-in - only mic-in,
and that mic-in is not stereo either.

While I believe that a desktop computer sitting under the operating
table with real serial ports and real soundcards will serve the ham
community much better than laptops, my words seem to fall on deaf ears.

With a desktop on the floor, you can choose the monitor size that fits
your operating position and you can even use a wireless mouse and
keyboard if cables are a problem.

So --- the move to Microphone rather than Line-In is being caused by
the more frequent use of laptops in the ham station.

2012-07-27 Thread Richard Fjeld

I'm far behind on e-mail, so apologies for being late on this comment. Also, I
notice that when I use a slashed zero in my call, a ? is substituted.

FWIW,
Yes, true in part as was the experience from the old analog data days, but the
'self-cleaning' action was usually due to a wiping action that most relays had
for that specific purpose.

I have some of the cleaner Ron mentioned. I have not used it for relays yet,
but use it for rotary switches, and mechanical wipers, etc. In short, places
that suffer from oxidation. Not all problems are oxidation. This is where
smoking was a problem. A nicotine film would develop on the surfaces of
everything in a radio. Anything that made contact with another conductor could
fail to conduct.

The same can be true of the air quality at your operating position. Look at
your furnace/AC filter with this in mind. Remember, air is being fan-forced
through most radios.

When we bring a radio from the cold temps into a heated building with humidity,
condensation develops on the cold surfaces which leaves a film on them.

We once wrapped the ventilators with cheese-cloth at a work location in the
city, several stories above the street level. Even though the air had passed
through standard furnace filters, the cheese-cloth became covered with a
black-ish, oily film.

You might think the air is better in rural areas. It is just different. For
example, I live in an area surrounded by lakes, farm land, and trees. I checked
the soffit vents under the eaves after 15 years, and they were packed thick
with a mat of fibers from the air. I now check/clean them once a year. It
helps the A/C.

That problem did not exist before modern solid-state gear. Significant
voltage/current flowing through the contacts provided a self cleaning
action that broke down oxidation and other contaminants. Unless one
carelessly used the key on a circuit that produced arcing, it was extremely
rare for key contacts to require attention. Ron AC7AC

Nikolay,

That data is not yet available. The chart is a compilation of
independent testing by ARRL and by Sherwood. Neither have completed
testing ot the KX3.

You can look at the KX3 specifications to get an idea of the
performance, but phase noise is not in the listed specification parameters.

I recently got a mini keyboard that works with the P3/SVGA/Latest Firmware. I
got it from a company in Houston, Texas called Directron

an 87 Windows Key layout, nice and small (11.75 X 6 X 1 in.) with a 6 ft.

Re: [Elecraft] UPS has lost my KX3 :-(

2012-07-27 Thread Jack West
An UPS story:

Some years ago, I sent my TS-940 transceiver to the
Kenwood repair facillity in California (from here in
western Washington). Kenwood repaired it in a timely
fashion. It was shipped back to me via UPS. UPS dropped
it, smashing in the left rear corner about 1 1/2 inches
as it is heavy, weighing in around 54 lbs. I had to
argue with a high level UPS manager in Seattle to finally get them to pay for a
return trip to California and an ultimate re-repair.

After a lot of arguing UPS agreed to pay. I did not get
my radio back until a few days past ONE YEAR had passed.
However the radio once again worked perfectly and it looked like they put it in
a
new case. (the serial
number is still the same)

A long wait just became even longer.

waiting for corroboration by two other testing organizations before we

Since they have GPS systems and since the numbers are not the same from block

My experience with both UPS and FedEx is that the driver leaves the

whether they can get into the truck and drive off before I can get to

For a $5 book it's no big deal. For a $500 piece of equipment it is.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 transmit audio cuts out

2012-07-27 Thread Keith Heimbold
Adrian,

I am looking at this as an rfi issue first and foremost. I am going to clean up
a little bit inside the shack. That particular K3 has been suffering with
unusual noise with my new SteppIR three element that was put up less than a
month ago.

To answer your question, the K3 was in transmit mode the entire time when the
audio was cutting out. Very odd.

If it turns out to be not a rfi issue then I will investigate the K3 a little
more. I am shipping my other K3 to Elecraft tomorrow for a couple key mods and
upgrades (negative ALC and band control which is important to me for a possible
future KPA500 purchase) and it will be out of pocket for three or so weeks so I
want to make sure that it is good to go.

My configuration last night also consisted of this K3 unit being

2012-07-27 Thread Phil Kane
One final story before Eric lowers the boom:

Many years ago I bought a special hand-drawn cartoon as a present for a
good friend who was retiring. I had it professionally framed, packed,
and sent via UPS. The friend reported that the glass in the frame had a
crack when it was received. Back to UPS who returned it to the sender.
The latter reported to me that it had appeared that UPS had used it as
a tennis racket and the drawing was totally destroyed. Because it was a
one-of-a-kind and the artist had passed away in the meantime, I had to
find a substitute in his remaining collection which was not nearly
on-topic as the one that I had originally had found. It was re-framed
with acrylic replacing the glass and fortunately it arrived back to my
friend without any damage, with UPS picking up the replacement and
reshipping costs.

I prefer FedEx.'Nuff said

[Elecraft] K3 transmit audio cuts out

2012-07-27 Thread Adrian

Keith, OK on that. I have had a similar experience;

Clamp ferrites on the mic line are beneficial, about 6 or so(wrap the core
as much as possible, allowing to shut).

# A series rf choke and 0.1uF bypass(to gnd) at the amp end keyline is
beneficial also.
Clamp ferrites also on the keyline help if you don't wish to do #.

Choking the coaxial feed at the SteppIR feedpoint, and again at shack entry
is helpful, if not already done.

Yagi. I was operating at about 500W.

This is the first time I have had any issue with this K3 unit though
 I do
experience some unusual receive issues with spurious and higher noise
levels with this unit versus my other K3 and my KX3.

Turns out that I am coincidentally sending up my other K3 1526 to
Elecraft today for several mods and some additional features to be
added. I would like to get the older 1391 unit working before sending 1526
up north.

Any thoughts on what might be happening or troubleshooting options
 would
 be great.

2012-07-27 Thread Keith Heimbold
I am implementing these suggestions. I have a balun design 1:1 current choke
that I plan to put at the entrance of the shack. I loaned it out but just asked
for it back. I will ferrite up the key line to the Quadra amp. I have added
some ferrites to the microphone.

Thanks for the suggestions! I will report back if these recommendations help.

Clamp ferrites also on the keyline help if you don't wish to do #.

Choking the coaxial feed at the SteppIR feedpoint, and again at shack entry
is helpful, if not already done.

 Adrian,

I am looking at this as an rfi issue first and foremost. I am going to clean
up a little bit inside the shack. That particular K3 has been suffering with
unusual noise with my new SteppIR three element that was put up less than a
 month ago.

To answer your question, the K3 was in transmit mode the entire time when
the audio was cutting out. Very odd.

If it turns out to be not a rfi issue then I will investigate the K3 a
little more. I am shipping my other K3 to Elecraft tomorrow for a couple key
mods and upgrades (negative ALC and band control which is important to me
for a possible future KPA500 purchase) and it will be out of pocket for
three or so weeks so I want to make sure that it is good to go.

Keith, From your original post you seemed to say that the signal

This would indicate no problem with the ptt, but the audio - signal
circuit chain, or rfi issues. Can you clarify please?

I guess Don interpreted your original post different to myself. I
would test sending dits into a DL for the same period to check power

Thanks for the quick recommendation. I will give that a try this morning.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Computer Interface for digital modes

2012-07-27 Thread Joe Subich, W4TV

The SignaLink uses the radio's PTT on the mic connector to switch
  from rx to tx.

The PTT is nothing more than a diode, capacitor and NPN transistor
that forms a crude VOX circuit and can be added to the $9.99 USB
audio dongle for about $2.00 by any competent amateur.

That PTT does nothing to provide early PTT to switch amplifiers or
preamplifiers, etc. that the EME folks require (and what W7GJ is
trying to accomplish).

So, I'd say your characterization is a bit off.

No, my characterization is dead on the money - overpriced, and under
performing in many aspects - particularly if one needs serial or USB
control of K3 or KX3 frequency and positive computer controlled PTT
for amplifier/preamp switching.

[Elecraft] P3 SVGA data keyboard.

2012-07-27 Thread Adrian
Just a bit of feedback on keyboards, it seems simpler is better.

I purchased a flash new Dell SK-8135 keyboard and it it would not work.
Dismayed I remembered getting my son a simple rubberised (rollup)
keyboard some time back .
This is real tough and would be good for field use and waterproof.

Well I swapped my son and the rubberised usb keyboard works great, and
he is real happy with the Dell.
A list of known types that work or dont work may be a good idea, perhaps
on the elecraft website?
