While we're opening the notch topic, how about a truely narrow notch for CW-- maybe about 30Hz.? The present one is far too wide for most CW situations. One is running stations and another station starts up too close on one side. A narrow notch could be one more tool.

I just looked at the manual for that microphone, and found it is an electret (condenser) type - which means it needs bias to operate. Problem is that the listing on mic pins shows +8 volts separately - which means that the voltage required to bias the mic element is likely wired to the pin

Thanks, Simon, for suggesting power to the USB adapter may be low; I had not considered that.  I'm driving it off a powered hub with a 2nd adapter from the same manufacturer to the FT1000 which IS working fine at 4800 baud.  I'll try using the adapter straight to the PC and see what happens.
