Re: [Elecraft] K3 Win4k3Suite Question

2018-10-30 Thread Gerald Manthey
I use win4k3 as my rig control. I use the macros window to control other
things. It also has the ability work with AC LOG which is my favorite logging
software. It also works with other digital software.
I use the small rig control window. The only thing I wish it had was adjustable
window sizes.
Great software. I am not an employee or paid by them. Just my opinion .

Terry,
All you should need is a connection to the computers com port.
Win4K3 know which radio and just works. The connection should be the
data connection, but you will need a compatible connection on the
computer or an adapter if you only have USB connections on the computer
side. Just make sure you can tell Win4K3 what com port you are using for
the radio just as you did for the KX3.

BTW: I started out with the KX3 and moved up as you are doing. There
were no compatibility issues. Good luck and have fun. If you really run
into a problem, Tom usually pops up and helps; he monitors this
reflector.

Thank you Dick and Dave. That is the problem then.
Okay I get to moving the desk and get the key set up where it should. I am
looking forward to trying to learn how to use a cootie key.
Thanks again.

There are two 1/4" phone connectors on the K3 back panel. One "KEY" is for a
straight key (mono). The other, "PADDLE" is for iambic keyers and has dot
and dash "sides".

I just received my Begali HST III Key today.
I have it plugged into the paddle slot on my K3.
The single lever works great. But I cant seem to get the Cootie part to
work.
I switched the lever and it just sends the same rhythm no mater which side I
push.
Does the HST need to be in a different plug, like say the keyer plug?
Just asking before I attempt to move the desk and wade threw the wires. hihi

[Elecraft] K3 Serial 6294

2017-11-26 Thread Gerald Manthey
Hello
I am Gerald Manthey and I was trying to set my Freq Calibration because
everyone kept telling me I was off freq.

I tried as I read on the forums with 5000, 1, 15000 with regular and
alt on CW.
But I think I did something wrong. lol

I went to put it back to factory and 1. Where I wrote it down got thrown
away.
2. changed computer and did not have the recent back up config.

I was wondering if you all kept files on the radio. I realize this is a
long shot, but thought I would try. My K3 is Serial number 6294. I had it
sent in for a K3syn board upgrade.

I was able to find the very original config when the radio was brand new.
Before the upgrades so I loaded it for right now. I had to go change the
filter settings because I added the 6 since it was new.

I had to turn on Tech mode, and I looked at the REF cal it is different
from where I had set it.

Okay just wondering what you would suggest?
Thanks

Re: [Elecraft] RF feedback problems with P3 and external keyboard

2017-11-26 Thread Gerald Manthey
I had RF problems with my P3 Keyboard also. I also used snap on mix 31’s and
solved the problem. Then decided to use a wireless keyboard and that solved the
problem. I felt the rf was getting in by the order as it was a cheap keyboard
and the cord was very thin.
Hope this helps you with some ideals

The mix of the toroid's used does matter. Mix 31 is best.

Here is what I did with a USB mouse.
I bought four mix 31 snapon's and installed two 18 inches back from the
mouse and another pair 18 inches back from the connector, winding as
many turns as would fit. I bought a USB extension cable and wound most
all of it on a mix 31 2.4 inch toroid. This choke was installed on the
computer end and the choked mouse cable was plugged into that.

All of this assumes you have things properly bonded, especially the
computer case/chassis.

Re: [Elecraft] Decoded Text on the P3

2016-07-16 Thread Gerald Manthey
Hey Gary hope all is well!
Did you pack up and move because of weather? LOL
Yeah I'm looking for some down size for when I'm at the cabin. It is solar
power and would be nice to be able to watch P3 for a couple of lines rather
than a word at a time on the K3. Also room is an issue here too.

Okay hopefully if the can do the PX3 they can do it to the P3. Fingers crossed.

Take care Gary we still need to arrange a qso. Hihi

Thanks asking to learn not criticizing.

added four snap on ferrite beads on each end of the VGA cable. The monitor
is as far away from the amp and feedlines as I can get it and all equipment
K3, P3, KPA500, KAT500 are bonded to a ground bus. This is not unique to
this monitor as it happened with a different smaller monitor I used before.

This has always been a problem, and I would like to eliminate it as it is
very disruptive to is usefulness in finding a clear spot to break through a
pileup. Not sure what else to do. Has anyone else had this issue?

 http://ellmore.net/na1dx/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/desktop-na1dx-10-23-2014-example.jpg

To support additional virtual com port management, I used the recommended
 release of com0com:
 http://sourceforge.net/projects/com0com/files/com0com/2.2.2.0/

On the desktop I have HRD Log and HRD Rotor, Win4K3 Suite, and NAP3 4.x
 running.

For sometime I have been using with my K3 and KX3 with a number of software
 products for dxing and contesting:

- Ham Radio Deluxe 6.x - dxing and log management
- LPBridge - for virtual com ports
- NAP3 v4.x - for Panadapter, with Spots displayed and conversational
 cw/psk/rtty
- N1MM for contesting
- CW Skimmer - for finding and work DX and Contest stations
- FLDIGI - contest grade digital mode with N1mm
- WinTelnetX (to handle multi dx clusters)

Win4KSuite replaces HRD's radio controller and server HamRadioDeluxe
application, so you can just run HRD's HRDLogbook application, which
 interfaced really well with Win4K3Suite.

QSY from spots from HRD Log or the ClubLog spots from within Win4K3 Suite
were quick. I was able to test the Win4K3 scope and NAP3 v4.x at the same
time. I use an LP Pan interface in my K3 configuration. I use Steinberg
UR22 USB 192kz external sound cards with ASIO drivers for both my K3 and
KX3 home QTH configurations. When operating remote at the beach, etc., I
usually just use the built in sound card of my laptop with my KX3. I
really like the radio interface controls with the windows of Win4K3 Suite.
You can have a big radio window or a smaller radio window with multiple
tabs to access all the controls. The controls are intuitive and well laid
 out.

Tom Blahovici is the creator. I have to give him a high five for the
product at this point. I like the SDR features accessible via the
software, but I also like radios with knobs! Tom's software and Elecraft
 give us good integration both.

My next step is do start testing Win4K3 Suite this weekend with N1MM+.
Over the next few weeks, I will get into testing with CW Skimmer, FLdigi
 and WinTelnet X.

Win4K3Suite - version 1.662 is now released. This version has a number of
enhancements which follow from user feedback.

 New:
 - It is now possible to adjust the Threshold and parameters such as CW
speed in the K3 Terminal Window. This unique capability is not available in
the K3 Utility or in any other software package. This allows one to change
the point at which decoding begins, helping eliminate false decoding of CW,
PSK and FSK signals. This also allows proper remote use of the K3 text
decoding with something like TeamViewer. Please note that there is
currently no way to do this with the KX3.

-The KX3 and LPPAN panadapter has had a number of enhancements:
 1) Split screen is now available allowing you to adjust the relative size
 of the spectrum vs waterfall
 2) Waterfall speed control has now been added
 3) The 8kHz IF shift of the KX3 is now supported.

 Other enhancements include:
Mouse wheel support for VFOA and VFOB allowing the change of individual
 digits in the frequency display.
Rework of the Tune button such that if a tuner is in BYPASS then pressing
 Tune will send a carrier.
Support for CW mode of WinWarbler.

Win4K3Suite is the most comprehensive control program for the K3, KX3,
KPA500 and KAT500. It interoperates with most third party logging and
 contest programs.
A free 30 day trial is available at va2fsq.com. Purchase entitles you to
free updates for as long as the K3 and KX3 exist.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 power out - key down

2014-07-19 Thread Gerald Manthey
Yes I guess I was not totally informed. I took the suggestions from the
book and translated it to mean low power.
I read the user guide for jt65hf and it said in part Running at full
output power is
seldom necessary or desirable due
to the incredible sensitivity of JT65.
Most users find 5 to 10 watts (or less) highly effective and 25 to 30 watts
is considered 'high power'.
Now 6 meter and vhf, uhf I can see high power.
I have a ZS6BKW inv vee at 40 and I work the world on 10 watts.

Yeah Don
That is what I was just thinking.
This group is a bunch of middle aged business owners who were feed with a
silver spoon. I brought up used equipment and was told they buy only the
best.
Then we all walked out to the parking lot and my Toyota truck was
surrounded by $50,000 trucks. Hihi.
Okay they got the money but was wanting to teach a more hands on ham.

We start antennas this week so hopefully they will want to make them. One
guy already had a company come out and install a 50 foot tower on his
farm/ranch.

Thanks
Gerald.
On Jun 16, 2014 5:34 PM, Don Wilhelm w3...@embarqmail.com wrote:

 Gerald,

I believe the KX3 is the better general choice for new hams. They can get
it in kit form so they can have the pride of making it themselves, even
 though there is no soldering.

For those who are experienced with soldering as well as properly following
written instructions, and really want to solder their kit together from
thru-hole components, the K2 is an excellent choice.

Yes, the price difference is minimal and the extra features offered by the
KX3 (data modes, FM, AM, dual receive, etc.) make it more flexible than the
 K2.

If the new ham wants only a basic CW QRP transceiver, then the K2 price is
 much lower.

The other point to be made is that the cost of expanding the K2 to a 100
watt transceiver is less than a KX3 with the KXPA3 and KXAT3.
For a 100 watt transceiver, the basic K3/100 and KX3 with KXPA100 are
priced within the same ballpark, so you may want to add the K3 to your list
 of suggestions.

New hams may not have resonant antennas, so an antenna tuner may be an
 asset.

that the K2 was a good radio. It is hard to push the K2 to them when the
price difference is so minimal between the K2 and the KX3. The KX3 also
 has
so many more features that it is hard to get them to put that a side for
 the

 What would you guys suggest?
Features verses the pride in making it yourself. Price difference is

Re: [Elecraft] FW: [K3] K3 Off Grid

2014-03-05 Thread Gerald Manthey
That was suggested Chester.
It works too. You can kick around numbers and theory all day. Real world is
the best way and you have to remember, temp plays a major part too.
I have lived off grid for two years. My experience has been through trial
and error.
Mind you I don't run just ham equipment, I run a whole house.

Type of battery, method of charge , temp and age of battery bank all play
into how long you can run before you reach 50 percent battery power rating.

He was given many good examples of what would work and how to charge them.
And he also made the choice to get a good quiet generator so that not only
ham stuff and be run but also needed things in a disaster or emergency.

I have seen people say solar and are wind turbine are not worth it. Well
when you have nothing it is. Also knowing that my system is rated for 25
years, I can afford to put some away for new system and new technology. And
I must say it is great not having utility bills.

But, I have enjoyed following this thread and learning how others have and
would do it.

Oh and if any one is curious
1 - 12 volt system for led lights and ham stuff.
600 amp hours.
Solar and wind turbine to charge.

1 - 48 volt system to run all my A/C needs. 800 amp hours. Solar / propane
generator with self start and stop. And home made steam engine that runs a
48 volt alternator .

Fun stuff.

Here is how I'd do it, your mileage may vary.

I'd measure the power draw at 100 watts key-down, and the power draw for
 receive.

I'd assume 50% duty cycle. You can skip a lot of math by either ignoring
the receive power draw (if it's low enough) and dividing by two, or adding
them together and dividing by two (averaging them together).

Multiply that number by the number of hours you need to be able to operate
-- and that's your target capacity in amp-hours.

That should over estimate the battery, so if that size wasn't economical,
 I'd buy one slightly smaller.

That should insure that the battery does the job for years, even when it's
starting to fail. It should also make sure you can keep operating if the
emergency was longer than initially planned.

Yes, there are a lot of factors, like operating mode that this appears to
ignore. I'm simply assuming things like full power or nothing when the
operator might be running SSB or PSK-31 at 20 watts.

I'm also ignoring portability, which I would not do if I was operating for
 fun.

Re: [Elecraft] KPA100 recommended max power for digital modes?

I run 25 watts on my K3. I adjusted it by watching my peaks on a scope. At
25 watts and my alc set I have a clean signal. There are those that splat
more power and we all see them in the waterfall. 25 watts will work the
world on PSK.
Just my observations and my .02 cents.

If you transmit a strong signal, and propagation is good, I'll be able to
work you, but when my receiver AGC cuts in all the rest of the PSK-31
stations on the band will go away.

If I happened to be working one of those other stations, my QSO is over.

As a rule of thumb, you don't want to exceed half the output power, unless
the amp is rated for 100% key down. Monitor the temperature.

50 watts is a lot of power on PSK-31.

So the push for higher power has been going on since shortly after the

While I do use it occasionally, that factor and the preponderance of

was excessive. As mentioned in one of the other replies, many
 transmissions
can fall within the receiver passband when using this mode. If you, or
anyone else uses much higher power, that strongest signal will take over
the passband on most receivers, spoiling other QSOs that are going on at
 the

I have noticed over the past five years or more there has been a steady
increase in the power being used by thoughtless or unknowing operators.
 As a
result of this power creep, I have drifted away from a mode that I once
 thoroughly enjoyed.

With your KX3, you should not normally need an amp to use PSK31.

I use a Signalink with my K2 and it works good. I also have the fixed audio
going to the Signalink. Get you volume controls set in windows and adjust
the ALC until only one bar lights. Make sure to stay with in the power

audio when using SSBC 2-1? I've used Spectrogram to slightly adjust audio
filter bandpass but doesn't do much.

As always, thanks for everyone's help!

If you hear the tones in the K3 speaker then I assume you mean that you are

HRD did briefly work a few times in the CW mode and I have tried

Here are my HRD Settings so far:

 Program Options / Modes + ID/CW

 Program Options/ PTT

the Via DM780 button is highlighted and I have configured the HRD

All of the sliders and control buttons work and the tuned radio frequency

The KX3 is in the CW mode and using VOX with full QSK. Changing the

 not impact the problem.

 When I type and send a message or use one of the programmed macro messages;

 Any Ideas?

Re: [Elecraft] hooking up a K3 to a Alpha 76

2013-05-22 Thread Gerald Manthey
Okay, I believe the government calls it pilot error. In this case I just
call it my stupidity. I will share this with everyone here just in case
they come across someone sharing this problem. Ok, here it is, after
installing the transformer into the amp. I connected everything and it did
not work. What I found was when I pushed one of the transformer molex plugs
together, it pushed out one side of one pin just enough to not make
contact. HV was fine, but no relays or out put power. Simple fix, push mole
pin in and all works great.
Thanks for all the suggestions, so if anyone else has symptoms like mine
have them check the transformer molex plugs.

Thanks again

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 power source

2013-05-02 Thread Gerald Manthey
Dick, On the Elecraft web site in the news section it reads in part The
KAT500 uses the same topology and high performance tuning algorithms as the
popular 100W autotuner in the K3. Typical matching range at 500-600W is up
to 10:1 on most bands. (slightly less on 160m and 6M). This also equates to
a range of 3:1 for higher power levels, up to 1200-1500 W.
So is it up to 1200 - 1500 watts?

Yes, for SWR of about 3:1 or better, it's good for USA legal limit. I'm
running two KAT500s with Ten Tec Titan 425 legal limit amps into antennas
that don't need a lot of tuning. The thing you must be careful of (and get
RIGHT) is that your power amp is bypassed while the KAT500 is tuning. If
the amp cannot be forced into bypass mode by interrupting PTT (my Titans
cannot), you must do that manually (and I do).

The key here is a good charge controller. I use a mppt controller and it is
98 % efficient. Gets 30% for charge. Has 3 different charge rates and
handles all battery types.
My RV is also wind turbine and solar powered. I have 560 watt solar to my
mppt charger, then to my 900 amp hr battery bank. At night the wind turbine
(600 watts) takes over and charges my battery bank. ( aw living off the

Five or so years ago, I bought 80 4.5-inch wafers from a 2nd tier
outfit in New England. From these, I built two panels that supply 21V
with no load, and output is about 18W each. The panels were designed
to strap on the rear of a backpack and they're about 16 x 28. I've
used them only a few times as this transport arrangement is a bit
clumsy and maneuvering is difficult with that type of unwieldy
backpack load. Now I only use them when I drive the operating

I would recommend some of the more modern roll-up amorphous silicon PV
modules. I've seen them at Field Day, but don't have any brand names.

Re: [Elecraft] K2 + SignalLink: Setting gains for digital modes

2013-04-14 Thread Gerald Manthey
Chris, what mode are you trying and what do you have your power set to?
Also if your RX and TX on the Signalink are maxed, use the Signalink
internal jumper to boast the gain so you can turn them down. Also check the
computer volume both sound and microphone recording. And make sure the
computer is recognising the Signalink as a USB audio codec .

The SignalLink drives the microphone input to the K2. The K2 has
compression turned off (1:1) and a mike gain of 3. The SignalLink computer
interface is at 100% gains on both sides and the SignalLink has the default
 internal gain jumpers.

I get occasional comments that I'm splattering, a very serious concern.
Unfortunately I lack instrumentation to study the problem.

How should I set the audio (SignalLink) drive gain and the RF (K2 Power)
drive? My normal operation is not smoke-producing, so this is not a
 duty-cycle question.

 Thanks,

Chris.
I have my TX and RX set at 9 o'clock each rig is different I set to low
power and get my signal looking good and then increase my power on the K2
to my 25 watts desired power. On my radio anything over 25 in digital mode
causes distortion. Works fine on CW and SSB. But other digital modes it
like 25 watts and I get no side bars. My K2 barely gets the led flickering.
But have made many contacts and received clean signal reports.

Given that I'm at the low end of the gain for a single ALC bar indication,
am I likely to be overloading? In other words, is a single ALC bar
acceptable if it's at the low end of the Tx gain setting?

I am going to 50% gain on both sound card levels.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 vs. KX3 for digital modes

2013-02-28 Thread Gerald Manthey
My k2, k3 and kx3 do great on digital. I run 5 watt most the time. I have
run 25 watts before. But 5 watts have made many contacts in cw and psk31.
Good luck

I know there is the wattage issue. Is 12 watts going to be enough if I use
 the KX3?
I know in the past with my Icom 7K I didn't use much wattage. I haven't

I'm using DXlabs for logging and rig control and was planning on using that

   Vladimir Umanets
   Feb 16 (2 days ago)
   to Paul
   Hey buddy!!!

   Yes we're ALL fine!

I was at my office with window jalousie closed. The windows are looking
   North.
The meteor exploded about 20km South of Chelyabinsk and 50 km high. So
 the
   explosion couldn't
be seen from my windows. Nevertheless it was like this - it started
 getting
brighter and brighter in my office
for about 1,5 second then it got very bright for maybe ,5 second, so
bright that I almost got blind for a moment and then
the light quickly disappeard. I was asking myself what could that be and
thought of a nuclear explosion and waited for two minutes
if anything else would follow, but nothing happened. But in one more
 minute
this horroble very long and loud crashing sound came!
The whole building was quaking with this sound and I clearly felt that
 the
sound and the force came from the above. We all were
ordered to leave the building and when we came out we saw this two line
trace turning into one line trace with junction point just
above our heads and little bit to the South. This cloud was very big and
 it
seemed in very close proximity even though it turned out
to be over 50 km away. I looked around and found out that lots and lots
 of
windows were broken. The ambulances started coming in
and I saw many people were injured and bleeding some couldn't walk by
themselves. It was a very frustrating expirience and many
people are still under shock. Even I go over and over those moments and
don't feel normal, still kind of excited or something.
I don't know what frightened me more the spectacular light, or the hit
wave, or those bleeding people. All this happened on Friday
morning at the plant I work for. The plant loss is estimated at 85 000
 000
R which is en equivl. of 1.5 month salory of our 1900
employees. The plant lost about 25000 sq.m of windows, over 50 doors,
 lots
of equipment (measuring, PCs and so on).
This was the day I will remember till my last day. My family is OK. My
house (42 km South of Chelyabinsk) lost its windows and that was
the only damage to my family. By the way, this explosion woke up my 81
 year
old mother with its spectacular light. She lives in Troitsk
136 km South of Chelyabinsk. The hit wave came 6+ minutes later and was
   very strong as mother said.

That's how it was. I now feel like I trust in God more and more...

 Hi Guys,

I've been a happy K3 owner for aprx. 3 years. Regardless which CPU I use,
I've always had an occassional problem receiving the error message VFO A

presents a serious problem as the computer and radio lock up for aprx. 30
 seconds.

During this 3 year span, I've operated with a dozen different Windows XP
and Windows 7 computers, always using N1MM Logging Software. I've
 operated

from several different QTH's and have the same problem. I always connect
via a Serial Port regardless of which CPU I use and have not tried a USB
 to
Serial Adapter. During the past few months, this problem has really
increased, such as: during last weekends CQWW Test, I got the dreaded VFO
 A not
responding message and computer lock-up at least once every hour. By the
way, I do not have a 2nd receiver in the K3 so I cannot say if I'd have
the same problem with VFO B.

I'd be grateful for ideas on how to eliminate the VFO A not responding
 problem.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 with HRD using CW modes

2012-11-11 Thread Gerald Manthey
Hello Don
There are four settings under the cw mode in Hrd. Cw, and winkey do not
work with the K3 alone. The ky and mcw work good with the K3. Mcw is used
with vox and the tones key the radio. Only down fall is you have to use the
stop in macros or click the stop button. The kycw is for elecraft. It
will key the radio and use the internal coder to send the morse. Plus
without all that relay clicking of an external sound card. So you can use
cwky or mcw they both work with the elecraft line. I have it running on a
K2, K3, and a KX3.
Good luck

This makes no difference if I use DATA Mode, USB or LSB, or CW for the

So the question is what setting am I missing as I can not send CW without

I can live with VOX but then if I forget to turn it off it creates other

I should have done the per-band filter adjustment since I did hear
some opposite sideband among all the super strong signals.

At the end I realized I had just about zero listener fatigue from

get up pendant device. Just my suggestions for anyone in similar situation.

Any problems running RTTY at full power? PA heat? Or are you running it
half power at 5 watts?
Thanks

I'm very impressed with the RTTY mode in this little bugger. It is doing a
good job of decoding signals in the JART WW RTTY contest, and with it's 10

reading it fairly well. Using the CW memories to hold the exchange makes it
easy, but using a paddle works well too! Well done Elecraft! BTW, 10m is
open this AM into Eastern Europe!

I am so looking forward to getting my fist speed up so that I can send psk
and Rtty with thr key.

I've never been into any mode other than CW, but this morning I tried
RTTY and PSK31 on the KX3 for the first time.

I too was very impressed. Very well implemented on the KX3 and I
particularly like being able to use the CW paddle for input. I don't
like being tied to the computer for this work (though I understand
 that has much to offer).

I'm looking forward to doing more with this mode (but CW will always be
 #1! :)

Re: [Elecraft] Tigertronics SignalLinkUSB connections to K2

2012-10-14 Thread Gerald Manthey
Chris
I run the signalink with my K2. Works great. Psk31 and cw. I am going to
try rtty when radio comes back. Getting kpa100 and kat100 in ec2 case. I
use my hp mini, signalink and K2 off of wind turbine and solar on my
ranch. I really like the SL USB and K2 combo.

The Tigertronics SignalLink looks like a reasonable way to add digital

 connector.

What's the experience on the SignalLink for the K2? Is it currently a good
 way to go?

If I went with a SignalLink, can I make the necessary connections to only
the Mic jack and an audio out jack, i.e, a modified speaker out jack?

 Thanks for your ideas.
