Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 EEPROM Problem
You mention that you ran the "KAT500 Configuration Software" but you didn't say that you tried to reload the firmware. Have you tried to RELOAD the firmware? If you didn't reload the firmware, then I would suggest that you give that a try. 73, Ken K3IU ~ On 7/9/2020 12:37 PM, Ed via Elecraft wrote: Our club K3 is connected to a KAT500, which is connected to 3 antennas (ANT1: Zero-Five vertical, ANT2: DXCC fan dipole, ANT3: 135ft doublet. Yesterday I was using the K3 on 6 meters with ANT 1 and ANT2, which were not designed for 6 meters. The KAT500 was able to tune for a low SWR, and the TX power was about 50 Watts. No problems occurred during the 6m net, but after the session was over, I noticed that I could no longer select ANT 3 on the KAT500, regardless of the band. I ran the KAT500 Configuration Software, and verified that ANT 3 is configured for use on all bands but 6m. The configuration SW "Operation" tab could not select ANT3 either (the K3 was turned off). I tried to save the current KAT500 configuration, but a "Save Configuration Error" box popped up after about 10 seconds, which stated "No response to Read EEPROM block". I repeated the process a few times, and the same error occurred each time. The KAT500 firmware is at v1.75. I suspect that RF may have gotten into the KAT500 and corrupted the EEPROM. I'm not sure what to do next. Has anyone encountered a similar problem? One thing that I don't see mentioned is that the gain settings for the for the crystal filters in the two receivers may be resulting in somewhat different gains over the signal path in the main and Sub Rcvrs. Re: [Elecraft] K3 ERR 12V problem
Good Morning, Barry: Sounds like a problem that raised its head quite a while back with corrosion of the 12V pins on the KPA3 connector. I am not near my rig and info at the moment so I can't confirm that. 73 and Happy Holidays, Ken K3IU On 12/17/2017 1:36 AM, Barry Simpson wrote: I have an early model K3 s/n 1397 which I built and which I upgraded around 12 months ago with the new synthesizers etc. It has the second receiver and numerous filters in both receivers. I have never had a moment's trouble with it since the original build in around 2009 and since the big upgrade. However, a couple of weeks ago, I had an ERR 12V message come up in the middle of a CQ and the rig stopped working. I simply turned it off and back on again and it seemed to be fixed. A little earlier today, I was calling CQ on 17m CW using the KPA 500 and the ERR 12V occurred again. This time I read the manual and saw that it could be related to the K3 PA module. I powered off the rig again and checked to find that there was some new firmware which I duly downloaded successfully. I then performed a TX gain calibration at 5w and 50w and that was successful. I then did a band by band check of the maximum CW power out. All seemed normal except for 24.9 MHz where the power out was around 130W - too high. However, as I was testing on 50.1 MHz the dreaded ERR 12V occurred again and after a power down and restart the same thing. Before I enlist the help of Elecraft, can anyone point me in the right direction to check for a short in the PA module. What should I be looking at/for ? The rig has not emitted any smoke nor has there been any burning smells or unusual noises. Any pointers would be appreciated before I take the rig apart. Re: [Elecraft] K3s Hearing low level rear speaker audio with SPKR+PH no and low AF set
You might try tapping "1" when in CONFIG>SPKR+PH to display "PH.R SW-". That fixed mine so that when SPKR+PH was YES, plugging the phones in the REAR phone jack caused the external speakers to be muted. If the PH.R+ was selected, the speakers did NOT mute when the phones were plugged into the Rear Panel, but did mute when thephones were plugged into the Front Panel. 73, Ken K3IU K3s #10691 ~~ On 3/6/2017 10:30 AM, M. Re: [Elecraft] Key out delay for end of TX?
Hi Bob: You can just put the K3 in SEMI breakin mode (Press hold QSK button on Band UP) and set the delay to whatever you want by adjusting the DELAY (press hold SPEED MIC and turn knob to adjust). Re: [Elecraft] (K3) Low output power on 15 meters (new KYSN related ?)
I have the same thing here, Bruce. Something in firmware was changed a while ago and when I reported it to Wayne, he said that it is within specs. 73, Ken K3IU ~~~ On 1/9/2016 11:09 AM, Bruce Meier wrote: Today I noticed that the output power on 15 meters does not reach 100w. The max, according to the front panel meter reading, is 93w. So, I ran the transmitter gain calibration and it did not help. I decreased the power to 90w and it reached 90w, so I gradually increased the power and it is fine up to 93w. When set to 94w and above the max output is 93w. I checked all other bands and with the exception of 17 meters they are fine. The same low power output occurs on 17 meters. I then tried my other K3 going through the exact same testing order and received the exact same results. They are both the exact same configuration. Specifics: - testing into both a dummy load (2 different ones) and 3 different 15 meter antennas - both K3 rigs are running latest firmware (5.38 / 2.86 / 2.86 / 1.25) - The power supply voltage at the rigs is 13.8 and drops to around 13.0 when in transmit - Reran the Transmitter Gain Calib - no help. Hi Jim: Now that you mention it, I do recall something about this in the recent past on the reflector. I did my previous test in CW mode putting RF into a dummy load and heard no momentary drop out. [Elecraft] K3: Loud audio POPS
G'morning all: I know that this loud audio pop issue was fixed with a firmware release (maybe 3.5x) in the past. However, during the ARRL DX CW contest while using a borrowed K3 (s/n 6425) while mine was on the west coast for repair, 3 or 4 times during the contest I experienced a loud, very short, audio pop in the earphones. I had updated the firmware on 6425 from 4.67 to 4.83 prior to the contest so it would play nicely with the KAT500 and KPA500, so I am pretty sure firmware was not the issue. I do not specifically recall any particular thing that I was doing that might make the pops happen, other than I think they happened when I was QSYing or changing freq by clicking on a spot on the logger band map. So far as I know all the AGC CONFIG settings in this K3 were defaults. The narrow crystal filter was 500 Hz. I do not recall these pops ever occurring in my K3 (s/n 202). In all other respects, the 6425 performed just as I had expected it would with no other issues. Just wondering if anyone else has recently experienced this audio pop and if so what did you do about it??? This may have implications for attached equipment. If there's any residual voltage on the supply or I/O lines, even 1 V, the K3 may not turn off all the way. It turns out that the brown-out detection circuitry on microcontrollers can be confused at some power levels that are low enough to look like a brownout but not high enough to properly power the detection circuitry. Under such conditions the MCU may continue to run on power-down via the on/off switch, resulting in the radio drawing an unpredictable amount of current. If residual supply or I/O leakage isn't the cause, then I suspect a problem with your K3's on/off circuitry or possibly even the PA module. (You could test the latter theory by unplugging the KPA3.) [Elecraft] KPA500 KAT500 in WPX
Just thought I'd pass this along in case others may have experienced something similar... Over the weekend in the WPX contest I noticed that I was occasionally being replied to as EA3IU rather than K3IU. After the first couple of times, I noticed that each time that it happened, I had just made a large frequency change on a band and the KAT500 had briefly reacted with a small change. Thinking about it, if the first element of the K ( _._ ) is being shortened by action of the KAT500, then what was being sent would certainly be interpreted as EA( . . _ ) rather than K. I'll do some testing with a separate receiver (my K2) and see if I can duplicate it. I'll also re-read the manual on the KAT500 to see if I can make it less sensitive to in-band freq changes. I know that there are changes in settings that can be made. 73, Ken K3IU __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Hello, Jack: Mine doesn't work that way at all. On s/n 108 with firmware 1.18, if I have PWR selected and tap HV, I see the HV on the display. If I tap HV again, it then displays the band that I am on, not the PWR. If I tap the HV button, the HV is displayed. If I then tap the CURRENT button, the current will be displayed. If I again tap the CURRENT button, the display shows the band info, not the HV. 73, Ken K3IU On 12/27/2012 1:00 PM, Jack Brindle wrote: Tapping a button on the KPA500 causes the parameter associated with that button to be displayed. To illustrate why this is important, try the following: tap the HV button. The HV will be displayed. Next tap the CURRENT button. The LCD will change to current. Now tap the Current button again. The LCD will change to HV, not to the band. At this point the only way to get to the band is to tap a band button. Thus this is actually the correct behavior. How would you have it behave differently? In other words, what would you change to get the behavior you would like? Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 PWR Display
I understand what you are describing, Jack. When I change bands from the KPA buttons with anything other the band info displayed in the LCD display, the KPA display very briefly shows the current band info and then the new band info is displayed when the K3 changes bands and the KPA display does NOT return to what was being displayed before tapping a new band button on the KPA. It does return to the last parameter displayed, though, since the last one displayed was the band info that it was being displayed before the band data info was received from the K3. I had not noticed before that the current band info displays briefly before the new band info is displayed. Without going over his original email, I think that what AC6JA was asking for was that the display to go back to the ORIGINAL parameter that was being displayed before tapping a band change button on the KPA. Anyway, that's enuf from me. It's Miller time here on the east coast. 73, Ken K3IU ~~~ On 12/27/2012 3:08 PM, Jack Brindle wrote: Ken; My fault. My description was a bit foggy. When you tap a band button, it changes the display parameter to the band/frequency. The request goes to the K3, which then changes the band, as indicated on the BAND0..3 lines. The KPA receives this, briefly displays the band, then goes back to displaying the current parameter, which is the band. You don't perceive the momentary display since it is the same as the normal display, set when the band button was tapped. If the frequency is changed without a band button being tapped, when the KPA sees the band change it performs the same actions, except the original display (for example, HV) will be displayed after the momentary band display. The tap of the band button in the first scenario is what caused the display parameter to be changed. Hi Brian: Just want to give you a datapoint regarding your comment about different power output for the 2 FSK frequencies. I just tested my K3 (#202) using a jumper across the FSK input on the ACC connector and using my Diamond SX-200 power meter I can not see any difference in power at all on the two frequencies. I checked at low power (5W), mid power (60 W) and 100W. The needle on the meter doesn't move when I key the FSK input. It is not my intent to start an argument about this, but just thought you might want to know my observations. 73, Ken K3IU ~~~ On 3/7/2012 8:34 AM, Brian Alsop wrote: I wonder if anybody else is observing this. I wonder if Elecraft has built in time constants to confirm to the old FCC specs for meters which are intended to read PEP power? Re: [Elecraft] Audio dropout
No, Guy, I don't use NR in a contest. I hardly ever use it at all. Tony was looking for some input, to I tried it out and told him what I found. This is NOT a problem for me at all. 73, Ken K3IU On 12/14/2010 11:05 AM, Guy Olinger K2AV wrote: Well, I don't hear the RX dropping out. What I do hear is the NR resetting and then readjusting. You get exactly the same delay when you have NR off and then turn it on. There is no change in the RF path, as the S meter shows the same level of 160m buzz on input without a drop out. The dropout is independent of AGC. The report is not that the RX drops out, but that turning on SUB somehow causes a slow F 1-2 NR reset in the main radio, as if the NR had been turned off and on. Listening to the SUBRX with the same setting of NR, coming on there is no synch wait, as if the RX turning on is known and the algorithm has a startup sequence. Should the main RX NR get a startup sequence when the SUB is switched on? Wayne, Lyle? Aside from that, you use NR in a contest? Just for long term ear comfort, I hope. I always lose very weak contacts in NR. I holler at the guys at NY4A if I see it on. Lowers the score. The brain is still the best NR for CW and SSB. NB is another story. Re: [Elecraft] ...clarification required... PWR Setting on K3
G'morning John: The number displayed when one adjusts the PWR knob is a COMMANDED power level. If the K3 has been calibrated using the procedures in the manual, then the power out will be what is commanded, assuming a 50 ohm resistive load. I also noticed this the other day when I was messing about with the RF Gain Calibration and then wanted to recheck the S-meter calibration. Thought I probably had a button-push sequence messed up, but I wasn't able to finish the job for the SubRx. 73, Ken K3IU Mike Harris wrote: G'day, Has anyone managed to use the proceedure in the handbook to calibrater the sub-rx s-meter? The metering is switched over to the sub-rx when in b SET mode. However, as soon at you go into CONFIG the s-meter reverts to the main rx making callibration impossible. This can be checked by rotating the main rx rf gain counter clockwise, the s-meter reading changes. Unless, that is, I'm doing something terribly wrong. I never bother with the sub-rx s-meter in normal operation but the implication is that it is adjustable. Re: [Elecraft] [K3] Sub RX S-meter cal
The S-meter Cal procedure in the manual worked up until about v.3.15 or so. Now I am pretty sure that it was NOT separately adjusting the SubRx S-meter, but I never checked, so I'm not sure. It doesn't really matter now. I have determined that, at least on my K3 (#202) running v3.41 et al, after running the RF Gain Calibration procedure and setting the MAIN Rx S-meter, the Sub Rx S-meter is spot on. It actually follows the adjustment for the Main Rx S-meter, i.e., set Main Rx at an extreme and the Sub Rx shows the exact same extreme. So... it looks to me like there is no reason to have a separate adjustment for the SubRx S-meter. I'm sure the manual will catch up. 73, Ken K3IU ~~ N1JM wrote: There is an error in the manual according to Wayne and you cannot calibrate the sub rx S-meter. Re: [Elecraft] K3: Shift is at *61, not where it was before
You probably inadvertently set your PITCH to 610. Try resetting it to 600 and see if that solves your problem. 73, Ken K3IU Brian Pepperdine wrote: I have noticed what I think is small but inexplicable change in my K3 shift. Up until a few weeks ago (when I had some other odd issue with the sidetone going to zero hz, thus the crystal filter not seeming to work...) my shift centre frequency was 60. That is, that is where I think the normal is and was demarcated by an asterisk, hence it read *60, and then 55, 50, 45 etc going down, and then when going back up the 60 had the *60 marker. Now the marker is *61. Things still go down and up in 5 hz increments when shifting but the default/normal marked is *61. Why is this? What happened? I don't really discern much diffence (being doing contacts in cw with no problem) .. but the mystery of how this changed and how to change it back (simply to be back to 5 hz steps...?) is pestering me. And yes, my tired eyes don't see much of anything on this in the manuals. But then again my wife has to find my jam for breakfast. tnx Brien Pepperdine VE3VAW Toronto __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
