I have owned my KX-3 for many years and just noticed a tiny LED

bottom of the radio. What is this?

I have all the upgrades except the two meter.

You will have to either rewire the Icom mic's Foster plug or you need to
purchase the Foster plug adaptor for the Yaesu mic and then rewire it.

Anyone know of an adapter connector that would fit either to adapt them to

Or maybe a universal box that lets me plug all the mic's in and have a cable

Search “bluetooth mixer” on Amazon - there are several possibilities depending
on the specific details of your application.

One such example:

[Elecraft] Mag Loop

2021-01-20 Thread Raymond Sills via Elecraft
Hi Group:
OK... here's my mag loop story:
I have two AlexLoops and one is the original version that uses copper
tubing for the main loop.  I used that loop to make an RTTY QSO with a station
in Moldova.  I had set the loop up indoors (in my sunroom, which has a lot of
windows) and worked that station on 40 meters... running 3 or 4 watts.
OK, it was during a contest... the contact was quick, but acknowledged both
ways... so a Q is a Q.And, that was my best DX with that antenna.  The fact
that it was 40 meters, the loop's least efficient band, is amazing to me.  I
suspect that the other guy was using a much better antenna, and likely more
power.

Re: [Elecraft] K4 Remote Question

2020-09-09 Thread Raymond Sills via Elecraft
Hi Rick:
And... perhaps another answer for Wi-Fi "extension" is to use a better antenna.
Some routers permit you to add an outboard antenna, which could be a gain
antenna, so you would then have a better connection for your LAN.  Or, you
might situate the routers so they have a better path.  All that is in the
traditions of ham radio!

Just be judicious in the use of wifi extenders, they are half duplex and
since they share the same channel of wifi, cause conflicts, which drags
down the entire network. Some can be configured to hear on one band and
transmit on another, which helps, a little.

My answer was to replace the network with a mesh net, then connecting
devices into the nodes directly as needed. That is MUCH more efficient
and the LAN speed shot back up to where it should be.

Re: [Elecraft] Coronavirus

2020-05-03 Thread Raymond Sills via Elecraft
Hi Group:
If nothing else, the COVID-19 virus demonstrates that we live in a global
civilization.  And, the Chinese manufacturers will build to whatever quality
level you specify.  You can have cheap stuff or high quality products or
components.A lot of today's smart phones (like the iPhone) are built in China.
Wages may be lower in China as compared to the USA, but they aren't pennies to
the dollar.  More like dimes to the dollar.  CNBC said that in 2015, factory
workers earned an average of 3.60 per hour.  And, it's common for workers to be
paid monthly, with extra pay for overtime, or piece work.
There's no question, however,  that those lower wages draw companies to
contract with Chinese companies.

Re: [Elecraft] Excel Test

2020-02-26 Thread Raymond Sills via Elecraft
In addition to Libre Office, there still is Open Office (now supported by The
Apache Software Foundation). It appears that at some point the original Open
Office morphed into Libre Office... and AFAIK, all the generated files from
each application are compatible with each other, and will permit you to export
a new file in Word (or other MS App) format.   Open Office is free to download
and use.
The latest version rescued me when I had to update my Mac's OS and I wanted to
be able to open older files.  The bane of updating an OS is the risk that some
older app that you still need or use will "break" under the new OS.   At that
point, you have to hope that the original developer of that now broker app will
have updated it to run on the new OS.
I had that situation with EchoMac... a compatible version of EchoLink.

If you do not have Microsoft Word, then you should download and install
LibreOffice.  It is a full Office suite that is quite similar to
Microsoft Office.  And it is free to use.  It will read any file
produced by MS Office, and it also exports to .pdf format.

Re: [Elecraft] Operating from a retirement home

Another option to consider with "retirement home" operating is what I've been
doing:
I use a KX3 feeding an AlexLoop (small magnetic loop) set up in our bedroom to
check into a local 10 meter net.  Works quite well. The same setup also had me
working a DX station in Moldova... during a RTTY contest.   I used the KX3's
built in RTTY feature for that QSO.  Oh... and I was running 3 watts on 40
meters.  And that was with the AlexLoop set up in our sun room.
So... it can be done.

Bill, if you want to get in at least some ham radio action you might
consider using TeamViewer (free for private use) to link up with a
friend who trusts you and is willing to let you tap into his station to
operate FT8 via the internet.  QST had a recent article on it and it's
pretty simple to set up.  I have a friend who is stuck in a condo and he
has used my station several times to make contacts all over the world
that way.

It's not the same as chatting with some interesting DX, but it's not a
whole lot different than what passes for most DX contacts.  You could
even operate one of the FT8/4 contests that way without being at much of
a disadvantage.

2019-11-07 Thread Raymond Sills via Elecraft
As I replied to Paul:
I'm not going to run out and buy one of those but in it's defense... it IS
designed for high level video use, as in network edit rooms, or graphics design
rooms.  It has many display refresh rates, so it can marry into various TV uses
in many countries.  It's meant to be a professional product.  There are studios
that spent that much on just a microphone, let alone a broadcast TV camera and
its lens, which costs more than a car.
I solve the whole issue by simply not having a shack.  All my operating is a la
portable.  So, I don't need any monitors.

For ham use in the shack it would be pointless (unless you have money burning
holes in your pocket).  If you do photography/video editing or graphics as a

Re: [Elecraft] Cammo KX2? (Was: Copy cat - no way)

2019-09-04 Thread Raymond Sills via Elecraft
Hi Mike:
Don't forget... "the best absorbers are also the best radiators"...  So, if a
light colored rig absorbs heat (and it would, eventually).. it would not be
able to radiate it away, trapping heat inside and possibly causing damage to
heat sensitive components.  For any rig, it's not a bad idea to shade it from
direct solar radiation in any location.  Put it in shade or create some shade
for the rig.

Re: [Elecraft] KX4 Features ??

2019-08-20 Thread Raymond Sills via Elecraft
The built-in sound card idea has been suggested, but I'd think you'd also need
an accurate clock for the FT modes... perhaps via a GPS receiver.
Yes, the KX2 is smaller, lighter, etc... but the KX3 is not particularly large
or heavy.  So, maybe a KX4 would be about the same size as the KX3... or
possibly a bit larger to accommodate some neat extra features.  Nevertheless, I
still like my KX3.

2019-05-05 Thread Raymond Sills via Elecraft
And it's best to remember that Elecraft rigs are products...perhaps tools,
but not investments.  Maybe 50 or 100 years from now, they will be
"collectibles" and become an investment (of sorts) at that point.
You might be spending your hard earned money on an Elecraft rig, but you are
not investing.  Investments either appreciate in value, return dividends, or
both.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 audio balance feature - a modest proposal

2019-04-01 Thread Raymond Sills via Elecraft
Hi Group:
Don't forget, it's not difficult to feed the rig's audio output to a modest
audio mixer (check a music store), which would easily permit you to
independently adjust the audio levels of the feed to your headset or speakers.
This could be made to work for a "mono" feed (single receiver) or a "stereo"
feed (two receivers).

Re: [Elecraft] Will there be a K4

2019-03-25 Thread Raymond Sills via Elecraft
Hi Neil:
I haven't read the fine print of the various software licenses, but it seems to
me that FT8 is a "digital mode" and it might possibly be able to generate FT8
compatible reception and transmission in multiple ways.Or, it might be possible
to include a tiny linux computer inside a K4, into which you can load the FT8
software, so it would always be in it's own universe... and not part of the
radio's OS.
I'm sure that having FT8 as a choosable mode in a K4 would be a popular idea.
Having said that, I'm pretty much a CW guy now... although I find it fun to be
able to send and receive RTTY and PSK31 with my KX3.

FWIW .. the FT8 code is not 'open source' it is under the General Public
License v3.   According to the GPL v3 FAQ:

"You cannot incorporate GPL-covered software in a proprietary system.
The goal of the GPL is to grant everyone the freedom to copy,
redistribute, understand, and modify a program. If you could incorporate
GPL-covered software into a nonfree system, it would have the effect of
making the GPL-covered software nonfree too."

So in reality, unless the firmware is then made available under the GPL
v3, which I don't see Elecraft doing, you can't use FT8 in the firmware.

need to ATU and I get the same results as yours when yours fails.  My serial

also experience these somewhat intermittent failures when loading into a dummy
load on my bench.

I am sorry I have nothing useful to convey, other than that you are not alone
:-)

If anyone does come up with suggestions/solutions, please broadcast to group as
there are now at least 2 folks with what appears to be the same issue(s).

 Good day

Late last year, my K3 (no 6957) developed a fault.  The symptoms were:
1. No power output when keying the rig
2. TX LED on when keyed, (sidetone generated in CW mode)
3. Single bar showing on the RF power meter, whatever scale, ie 0 - 10 or 0
- 100
4. ATU tune command: relays clicking, TX LED on, no power output, no
indication on SWR meter; two horizontal dashes in the VFO A display area
where normally one would see the resolving SWR; in VFO B area 5.0W is
indicated
5. TX gain calibration failed on 5W and 50W;  mW TX calibration gain OK

I contacted Elecraft Support who suspected a failure of the LPA PA
transistor(s) and I shipped the rig to Watsonville where Q4 on the LPA board
was found to be dead.  Q4 and Q5 were replaced, re-biased and tested.

On getting the rig back, the same symptoms were present, but lasted only a
short while and the rig then performed normally, enough to have a couple of
QSOs, but then failed.  Since then the same symptoms have been present
intermittently.  I asked a friend who also has a K3 to try the rig to make
sure I was not doing something silly.  For about 20 minutes after switch on
the symptoms were present, then for no apparent reason the rig performed
normally for approximately 10 minutes before failing again.  We were testing
by repeatedly invoking ATU tune functions on different bands. Since then,
the rig will work or not work on switch on; it has worked flawlessly for
several hours but sometimes will present only the listed symptoms for
several hours after switch on.

When it is working, it all works, specifically the TX gain calibration
completes normally

After several days of performing normally, I relocated the rig to my
alternative operating location; it did not work, with the same symptoms.

Elecraft Support has been as exemplary as ever, but they are loth for me to
return the rig when it may well sit on the test bench being smug and
behaving normally.  It seems to me that the possibilities are  (i) a dry
solder joint (ii) a loose connection or (iii) a component on the verge of
failing.  I think I should next dismantle and reassemble the rig to try to
exclude option (ii), and perhaps find either (i) or (iii), although needle
and haystack comes to mind...  Has anyone suffered similar problems and
found a solution, or can someone advise where I should concentrate my
search?

selling the CM500 (which I bought for $59.99) asking $48.00 (including
priority mail shipping which cost me $13.65). Current best price is $58.29
on Amazon.com with free shipping. You save $10.29.

I prefer PayPal but will accept check or money order.

Re: [Elecraft] Killed the KPA500 :)

2018-11-16 Thread Raymond Sills
Hi guys:

No mention was made of whether the transceiver was being operated by the front
panel or via CAT commands. Maybe something in some running software sent an
"operate" command when it should not have. It'll be interesting to know what
the cause of the incident turns out to be.

Re: [Elecraft] OT: TV RFI Question

2018-11-07 Thread Raymond Sills
Plasma TV sets are often big RFI generators. And, they have the annoying habit
of developing burn-in... much like CRTs if a constant image is displayed. I
used to work for a TV network that used plasma displays as part of studio set
decorations, and they quickly discovered that using a plasma display for an
identifying graphic (a logo or some such) resulted in major burn-in, in part
because they pushed the brightness of the display, so that it could be picked
up by studio cameras in a brightly lit set.

RFI was not a big concern at the TV studio, but there have been many stories of
neighbors who purchased a plasma TV set that happened to ruin their radio
reception... as well as the HF activity of nearby amateurs.

Jim,

Ditch the Plasmas and be sure they leave
your neighborhood.

I've got one of those insanely oversize LG
OLED TVs and it puts out zero RFI that I
can see on the P3. I did a lot of testing
during the free return period just to be
sure I wasn't bringing a noise generator
into the house, and it's excellent in all
ways. Also, it uses so little power
compared to a much smaller Vizio TV, The
glass is cool to the touch and the
processor compartment is slightly warm at
most.

OLED can produce a lot of brightness and
power consumption relates to brightness so
how you set it up matters energy-wise, but
your Plasmas are multiples of the power
the OLED uses. One very nice thing with
OLED is you see genuine black, no backlit
shade of gray, it takes awhile to get used
to seeing very accurate color and shading
when watching in a darkened room, we don't
see that with the other kinds of TV.

Re: [Elecraft] 32 bit Elecraft Utility Apps

2018-04-15 Thread Raymond Sills

HI Bill:

/rant

It's nice that people are getting a warning but IMO, I'd just as soon stay
at a lower level OS where all the applications that I need will still work just
fine. I got viciously snagged by an OS upgrade, which rendered my entire Time
Capsule backup useless. So, all the files that I wanted to keep simply are
unavailable to me after my older iMac's HD tanked, and I bought a new iMac,
ASSUMING (bad idea) that I could restore them to the new machine. Nope. So,
that's left a bitter taste in my mouth. And, I'm a long time Mac user. This
is the first time I've been seriously burnt by an OS "upgrade".

So have a number of professional colleagues who depended on their apps running
properly on High Sierra... who sadly discovered that their income stream ground
to a halt, since they no longer to use their computers for professional audio
and video post-production. Eventually, their apps will be supported by HS...
but for many, this is a big deal. Fortunately, some of them were able to
"downgrade" back to the OS that works but not all were able to do that.

So, for now... I do not upgrade an OS unless and until I know that my apps will
run properly.

When I launched the K3 utility, I got a message saying in
essence, that it was using obsolete technology. It referenced
 which says that soon
32 bit applications will not run. To quote:

"Starting with macOS High Sierra 10.13.4, apps that have not
been updated to use 64-bit processes produce a one-time alert
when opened. This gives users advance notice that they are
running 32-bit software, which will not be compatible with macOS
in the future."

They don't say when the change will be effective, but the clock
is ticking.

That's not a very good interface. It helps to have an clip light or
other digital level indicator on the interface for the received signal.
My Tascam US100 has a green signal presence light and a red one for

Hi Paul:

And... that's the argument that FT-817 owners have used for staying with the
817... the KX rigs do not have 2 M or 70cm capability
and all modes, as well. Those owners live with the poor battery performance,
etc., or buy aftermarket alternatives. By the time it all gets added up, it's
expensive. But you do have that extra VHF/UHF capability, and that's worth

industry. Many RVs have appliances (including TVs) that are powered from the
"house battery", which is almost always a 12 VDC system. And, many TVs have a
VGA port on them... plus video, and HDMI, as well as an antenna port.

It's a good idea, but too severely limiting since almost all monitors
now run on 19V. Thus far the HP 23es is fine. I ran RTTY with it next to
KPA500 on several bands with no issues. Final test will be pointing the
6m EME array at the shack and listening. The monitors look really good
and were on sale at Best Buy for $119!

[Elecraft] Bounced emails

2017-12-22 Thread Raymond Sills
Hi Gang:

I received today a message, supposedly from the list mom, saying that I had
"too many bounced emails" and that my membership in the list was being
suspended.

Can't figure why the emails should have bounced. Unless somewhere in the
bowels of AOL/Verizon that there was a major hiccup. Other lists and direct
emails appear to have not been affected.

There is a simple "relpy to this message" to supposedly restore my account, but
I'm concerned that it might be a hack that is being re-directed somewhere else.
I have not yet responded. But, the message could be legit, since it had my
list password. Of course, sending a password in a plain text email is not such
a good idea.

Maybe it all was a hiccup at Mailman.

I believe all the WSJT software needs Windows and X86 instruction set so iOS or
ARM based tablets are out. I looked around bit but finally settled on a Dell
12.5 inch Latitude business laptop. It outweighs the KX2 by 3X but it has
three USB 3.0 ports and a bunch of other features. I use it with the KX2, two
audio cables and a Radio Shack USB sound card dongle. Couldn't be simpler. YMMV

We know that the K3 sold nearly 10,000, so add in the K3S sales, and that is
more than the KX3.

ICOM sure sold a lot of the IC-706 series. I would not be surprised to see that
at the top of the list.

If we are talking rigs made specifically for amateurs, the Collins S-line might
not qualify. If we are talking all HF, it is probably some marine or aircraft

[Elecraft] Lightning Damage

2017-11-06 Thread Raymond Sills
Hi Group:

Well, now and then I'm disappointed that I don't have a permanent shack.
However, after hearing some of those lightning stories there's certainly an
additional plus side to being a portable-only QRP operator. All my gear is
disconnected from the AC mains, don't have any antennas up, and any gear I have
is unconnected to any other gear, while it waits patiently for me to grab one
of the carry bags and go set up in the great outdoors. And, that, of course,
happens in nice WX. Sure, there can be a "bolt from the blue".. but the
chances of that are very low in my area of EPA.

The K-Pod (and Fred Cady’s text on macro programming) solved much of the
problem for me, though I recently added a piece of equipment that greatly
expands the availability of keyboard-driven macros for the K3 and the KX3 – and
does a bunch of other stuff including keyer messaging and contest logging with
serial number increment, which the K3 keyer lacks. The SideKar or SideKar Plus
made by QRPWorks. Painless plug and play for K3 K3S KX3 and KX2. Also comes
with Elecraft-level personal service from Shel, KF0UR. I have no financial
interest in QRPWorks – just a satisfied customer with now more macro control
capability than I know how to use.

Re: [Elecraft] K1 Discontinued

2017-08-30 Thread Raymond Sills
Well, certainly, the handwriting was on the wall when you could no longer
purchase a 4-band K1. That said, I feel bad for Perley, who was saving up to
get one. At this point, I suspect he will have to go in a different direction,
if he wants a rig to construct himself. He's pretty much said that he is on a
very tight budget, so even saving up for a KX2 might be out of the question.
And, it appears that not too many K1 owners are anxious to put their units on
the second-hand market, either because they plan to keep them "forever"... or
because at a reasonable "price realized" from a sale is low enough that they
will just keep it. :)

Re: [Elecraft] [KX3] Band Plans

2017-08-22 Thread Raymond Sills

It's certainly a strange situation, reaching the "band edge" at 53 MHz. I'll
have to admit, I've never tuned up that high in the band to see if I have the
same situation with my KX3. I know that there are a number of repeaters here
in EPA, and I'm sure some must be using that last MHz of the band.
Historically, 6 meter repeaters grew to be popular in this area (near Philly)
for mobile FM operation, because there were no over-the-air TV stations on
Channel 2, and that would afford a 6 MHz buffer zone between that upper end of
6 meters and the Channel 3 station... a luxury not enjoyed by areas that did
have a station on TV Channel 2.

Re: [Elecraft] 6 meters open this morning; listening 50.095 (CW)

2017-06-22 Thread Raymond Sills
That's telling me that six meters could be a valuable band during Field Day.
Consider having at least a dipole antenna that can to put into service. If the
E-clouds are active, participants could pick up quite a few points in a band
that has lots of room. The "skip" moves around a lot, but FD QSOs are short,
so it could be a very productive band. And you don't need power.. QRP is often
as good as QRO.

Bob and Jim have excellent points.

There is one advantage for the electret mic compared to a dynamic
mic. Electrets are generally 26 dB "hotter" than a dynamic mic
and thus are much more resistant to common mode RF feedback and
magnetic coupling. However, that assumes the transceiver is
designed for the higher input level and properly reduces gain
before the mic gain control.

Mics of any kind - dynamic or condenser/electret - with wide frequency
response are completely wasted for amateur radio (or any communications
application). You really want a clean 200 Hz - 4 Hz response. Lower
frequencies cause distortion and waste power, higher frequencies are
simply lost in the "channel noise".

Like Bob and Jim, I spent my professional life in the recording and
broadcast industries. Amateurs waste far too much on over spec'd
microphones and fancy "brand name" advertising campaigns.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 P3 and KAT500

2017-04-27 Thread Raymond Sills
Good points. And, besides that.. MARS communication deals with a military
connection.. i.e. sending messages to or from deployed service people, either
as written text (morse, digital, etc) or voice, often via phone patches.

If you have a MARS authorization, Elecraft will provide the patch.
However, you do not need it for ARES and/or RACES operations which
are strictly amateur based. In essence, operate within your amateur
authorizations - don't decide you "need it" just because you want it.

Of course, you will learn that the rules mean something once you have
been licensed more than a couple of years - the current examinations
obviously don't stress that the rules trump any entitlement.

Re: [Elecraft] For Sale, unbuilt K2 with many options

2017-04-26 Thread Raymond Sills

Hi Jeff:

Yes, there are several builders who will complete or build from scratch. Even
if there is nobody near by, Elecraft has a list of trusted builders. Spending
just a bit more to complete the radio will be a lot of value added: you'll have
a great rig, and you (or your heirs) will be able to get way more than $1K for
the rig. And, there are people who would do the job just for the fun of it.

Plus, once the rig is finished, there is a lot of help here on this list. No
question is too silly.

Isn't there a guy on here. or used to be on here that offered his assembly
services on Elecraft products? I'm with Kevin on this...

Re: [Elecraft] reply to digest

2017-04-01 Thread Raymond Sills
That's exactly what have been doing for years. But a big monkey wrench was
forced into the procedure, when Verizon decided to stop providing it's
customers with email service (via their email servers). Fortunately, (I
guess), they worked out a deal with AOL, to pass the email domain name
(verizon.net) over to AOL, which has enabled those of us with verizon addresses
to simply "keep" them.. making it much easier than trying to use a new email
service and having to advise all your email contacts as to the new address.

And, I've been pleasantly surprised with AOL's web-based client features.
Essentially, their web client is able to emulate all the filtering that I had
with my dedicated email app on my Mac. So, for now.. it's been rather
painless. And AOL's web client even works with older OSs on my machines. I
guess they coded it so that it will run on any generic browser.

Granted, the cost of this is having some advertising pop up on the side of my
monitor screen, but it does not interfere with the operation of reading and
sending email. And, after you send an email, a screen comes up with an ad...
(which is how AOL pays for everything). So, I'm OK with that.

There is a solution to the digest problem. Download individual posts!
Then in your email client, create an "Elecraft" folder - AND set a
filter to move all emails with [Elecraft] in the subject line to that
Elecraft folder.
Presto - your own "digest" which allows you to respond to individual posts.
