Good Evening, The ongoing geomagnetic storm has dropped to G1. Tomorrow they are predicting another round at the G5 level. Communications below 30 MHz will probably be impaired. Hopefully the two nets will be unaffected during a lull between CMEs. The snow from last week was replaced by a few days of 80 degrees. The daffodils had an eight week run so they did pretty well. I noticed a tiny hummingbird this morning. It took a few moments, processing a stack of memories. "The same thing happened last year." The Anna's Hummingbirds have returned with the heat. There are plenty of tiny insects for them to eat. Keeps them from eating me. Please join us on (or near): 14050 kHz at 2200z Sunday (3 PM PDT Sunday) 7047 kHz at z Monday (5 PM PDT Sunday) 73, Kevin. Good Evening, It has been a cold, wet, snowy week. My daffodils look fresh due to the chill. They last for weeks during the end of winter. Birds are settling in. A few woodpeckers are making homes. The sun is very active. Multiple CME hits and near misses, with another due tomorrow. A variety of flares blacked out RF too. We may be able to communicate tomorrow, or I could hear a steady roaring sound. Good Evening, Spring is progressing. I finally saw the hummingbird which is emptying the feeder. I also saw a doe with a yearling eating their way across the new undergrowth. Their winter coats make them quite visible. They were back again today. Then the doe found a dry spot under a cedar tree and napped all afternoon. Around 5:30 she shook herself and got back to eating. The sun has been quite active this week. Multiple CMEs were created, some of them hitting the earth, some passing close by. The ionosphere is well fed with ions and rather unstable. Conditions could change quickly because more CMEs are due at any moment. Propagation may prove challenging. Good Evening, It was partly sunny and cool all week. Currently it is windy. My view is much greener. More flowers but no hummingbirds at the feeder. It has stopped snowing so they should show up soon. The daffodils are all open with a few trilliums here and there. The ionosphere is still be shaking after the pounding it took from yesterday's CME. A large sunspot group is sending a lot of ions our way. It is not as strong as it was the last time it showed up. Still mixed field groupings but it has lost some of its vigor. Good Evening, Spring is mostly here. More flowers, more birds, more pollen, and more bugs. Sun appears more often these days. However, more snow is due on Tuesday. Frosty nights kill off the biting flies, I appreciate being eaten less. The sunspot number is below 100 but the sun is quite active. A few smaller CMEs are bouncing off the magnetosphere causing some aurora, QSB, and hissing. The large, active sunspot group from two weeks ago is coming back. Good Evening, Some weeks nothing goes right, this was not one of them. Light rain then sun and mild temperatures. More flowers and more birds. Snow is melting above me so streams are full. The ground was dry enough to let me check the forest. I have much less damage than my neighbors. Their trees are quite a bit younger, they snapped where green wood met more mature timber. Clear growth assures trees will survive; any kinks or forks can be fatal to them. The sunspot number is low and the flux rate is lower too. However, the sun has been quite active this week. There is still a possible earth effective flare from 3615. I expect a more quiet band than we have had lately. Less roaring. There may even be less QSB. But there should be no whistling from clouds of protons, or hissing from high speed electrons. Just normal random noises with (hopefully) more ordered Morse code. Good Evening, It was sunny and warm today. Most of the snow has melted so I went for a walk to check the damage to the forest. A few dozen broken trees ranging from ten inches in diameter to twenty. Their trunks exploded into many shards around thirty feet up. Only the Doug fir shattered; cedar and hemlock trees are unharmed. Some birds returned and daffodils are growing though the remaining snow. The sun looks almost bare but the flux is still high. A rain of protons is absorbing RF around the poles. There was a strong flare from a sunspot not yet facing Earth. Propagation should be OK tomorrow, with plenty of QSB and a steady hiss from the ion flow. Good Evening, The sun had an active week sending numerous flares and CMEs. There were a few RF blackouts but the CMEs mostly missed us. There are fewer sunspots though plenty of ions are flowing our way. Expect a variety of QSB, some ion static, and those odd noises which whistle through the bands. My forecast ranged from no snow to six feet of it. Reality settled on six inches which did not survive the following heavy rain. The fir trees are happy, the ground is quite soggy. Good Evening, It has been mostly sunny but cool. The first snow of the season fell yesterday. Early in the week I heard branches breaking so I went outside for a look. A herd of elk was spread through the forest. The younger elk were chasing each other around the clearest areas breaking rotting slash. Two dozen cows were busy ignoring them and eating. Good Evening, It was a much less gloomy week. In fact it was downright sunny. Cold though, at least for here. Last night it dropped into the high teens. It did get above freezing today but not by much. The bird basin has not thawed. The elk have carved a new path just inside a younger stand of trees nearby. The hunters have been plentiful so they change their habits and don't cross the roads until well after dark. The sun is quite speckled, active with current and impending events. The sunspot number and the solar flux are both high, 184 and 178 respectively. We are also in the midst of the CQ WW DX contest. I may not be able to find an open space for the twenty meter net. However, the contest will terminate right at the forty meter net's time. Again, I will seek an open frequency. Good Evening, The week was mostly sunny with temperatures below 50F. Warm enough for a new crop of mushrooms but too cold for spiders. The alder have lost their leaves, now the mosses are glowing bright green. More light and rain lets them progress to their diploid phase. The sun is almost bare. Good Evening, It has been a wet week. The sun did come out for a few seconds but the rest of the time it has been foggy, rainy, and gloomy. Almost all of the bracken ferns are yellow, gold, or bronze. Leaves have mostly changed to some shade of yellow with a slight tinge of orange. Birds are scarce. The sun is fairly blank but still active. Last Sunday there was a large CME which disrupted Sweepstakes. Another CME is due today though it is not as strong. There are aurora but with constant cloud cover it is hard to see them. I am also too far away from the magnetic North pole to see them on a regular basis. I grew up in Wisconsin where the light show was common and often intense. Viewing them over time gives you a good look at how the magnetic field is structured. Good Evening, More color changes and fewer leaves let me see the birds more easily. During a burst of heavy rain I watched a number of Varied Thrushes using transient puddles to wash up. I thought birds sat under cover when it rained; they were enjoying the downpour. Two CMEs may hit today. The sun is mostly bare. There is a lower rate of flux too. The bands should both be capable of comms. There may even be less QSB if those CMEs don't hit us. Dense fog slows or stops my Internet connection though HF gets through OK. Good Evening, The rainy season began early this year; the last week was chilly, foggy, and wet. The sun returned today highlighting new color changes. With temperatures dropping to the mid 30s some shrubs are getting ready for winter. Some crows were ridge soaring over me today. With their slender wings they can't hang in one place very long. They made multiple passes instead. The solar forecast is for calm and steady conditions. I expect thunder storms to modify that prediction. But low QSB would be nice. Good Evening, I was pruning begonias when an Oregon Nuthatch landed on the lip of the water basin next to me. Three common species are the Oregon Junco, the Oregon Chickadee, and the Oregon Nuthatch. Each of them has a patch of rusty brown on them. Otherwise they are like their cousins out east. It is starting to smell like fall, the birds are dropping lower in the trees. Squirrels are racing along the highest limbs freeing them of their cones. As they fall they bounce off of every limb beneath. Great dispersal mechanism, but you need a hardhat to walk around. The sun snuck a CME into the flow of earthward ions. It is due tomorrow so there may be a blackout, or there may be more noise, or there could be more QSB. We shall see, it could miss us entirely. Kind of like those cones falling from the sky. I will switch between my 20 m dipole and the 40 meter vertical. The reason I have not used a dipole for the net is because they are too directive. An inverted V grabs a wider swath and sends a weaker signal. One of those engineering trade offs where there are no real winners, only compromise. This is a video of the direct contribution to the electric field of a resonant one-half wavelength horizontal dipole. It starts with a series of still shots taken as I edited, compiled, and ran the application for a sequence of heights above ground. Then I demonstrated the application at yet another height. Finally I recompiled with a vertical (monopole) antenna pattern. I am currently working on code for the reflected portion of the E field. If I map the direct and reflected parts separately, then add them together with a ground reflectivity coefficient, I can model the E field over various soil types. http://bacona.design/video.html topmost video. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

Good Evening, After a wet, cool week today feels very nice. Sunny skies, no wind, temperature rose to 79 F. It is nice to walk outside without the bugs around. The spiders eat them. The Canada jays are migrating to lower limbs eating more bugs. A few followed me around today as I inspected the cleared area. Elk found the opening last week and are locating what's edible. The sun did not send many flares this week, but there is a steady stream of ions on the way. When the sun dried things out I laid my newly built antenna on the roof, routed some coax from the outside into the radio room, and knotted guy rope on either end. I tied one end to the rope holding up my 1/4 wave vertical. I tied the other end to the rope holding up my other vertical antenna. Thus I did not need to waste a day shooting, and losing, sinkers to guide leader lines. I have never tried a resonant, flat topped dipole before. I've always had a rope at the feed point as well as one at both ends. This normally gives me an inverted V. So this antenna is more directive. It favors a swath from Upper Michigan down to northern Florida. On RBN I find a 6 dB difference between my 1/4 wave vertical and this new dipole. Good Evening, Rain gave the soil a fresh, spicy scent due to its heritage. The last of the large cedar trees were cut before WWII but the soil is made from generations of their needles and fallen timber. I took my laptop out into the forest to call a Pileated woodpecker. He flew in and gave his response. Kind of like a CQ :) The sun doesn't look very active, but it sent a cloud of ions which is causing a geomagnetic storm. Tomorrow another two CMEs are due to strike. Good Evening, It was a cool week with some fog, then a thunderstorm with an inch of rain. The forest enjoyed the moisture. Some of the ferns are turning yellow from a few 30 degree nights. Smoke has returned but not as thick as it was last week. The sun continues to be moderately active with no X class flares predicted. Solar flux is still high, it is simply less unsteady. Nonetheless, there should be QSB and some hissing. The sun is rapidly moving southward. Sunset is at 8:02 PM, forty minutes earlier than at the beginning of August. I posted the code necessary to calculate the electric field around a 1/2 wavelength dipole antenna. It will be used to create 3D mesh models of antenna radiation patterns; then animate them as the user changes any one of seven variables. Good Evening, The sun has numerous, complex sunspot groups. Curiously no strong flares are expected. That is an interesting point of view :) Flux is high and the auroral oval is bright. I expect a steady hiss interrupted by lightning static. Each morning this week the sky was red. Haze from the forest fires blew in after three days of hot weather. A cool breeze feels good although it is moving the smoke toward the Pacific. Rain would be nice but that's at least a month away. A foggy morning would lessen fire danger. I found the Gray Jays. In the winter they are common at the feeder and water basin along with Steller's Jays. In April they disappear. I started seeing immature Gray Jays when they dropped on the roof during flight training. That got me watching what is going on above me. The Steller's Jays stay mostly in the lower branches. The Gray Jays migrated upward into the mid to high canopy branches, 70 to 100 feet above me. I knew Band-tailed Pigeons lived up there, while crows visit now and then. Now I know the Gray Jays move up during spring and summer. I need to note when they drop down again. Scrub Jays do not live at this elevation. Good Evening, The sun has been active this week. Earlier today there was a radio black out due to a cloud of protons hitting the ionosphere. An earth directed CME will follow in a couple of days. Good Evening, It was sunny and warm this week. I spent four days with saws improving my 2.4 GHz signal path. When we reset the dish earlier this year the alder did not have leaves. They grew to full size blocking the path. Now they are felled, limbed, and stacked; ready for the wood stove by winter. My work opened space for an inverted V, or doublet, and more sun. The sun tossed a few weak CMEs at us and is still spawning active sunspot groups. Oddly enough quiet conditions are predicted for this weekend. However, sunspot 3373 could send an X-class flare. May you live in interesting times :) I have my trusty transceiver with working antennas to test conditions. Good Evening, It was a cool week, until Wednesday. Now temperatures are flirting with triple digits. Foxgloves and fireweed are both in bloom. Raspberries are still red, not yet ready. Salmon-berries are ripe but I'm not a fan. Thimble-berries will be ready in a few weeks. The sun is not quiet. There are three large sunspot groups, ranging from moderately active to C class flares. Good Evening, There has been no rain this week. The last three mornings have been foggy but it was not dense enough to condense rain from the trees. The forest did gathered some of it; the air smells better. Looks like a mild week ahead so the fire danger should stay low. The large sunspot which broke up last week's 40 meter net is gone, now a new, large spot has passed over the limb. Will it remain quiescent long enough to get through tomorrow? Good Evening, Sun, with a little rain, has made the forest green. It smells great. More new birds arrived. The young Gray jays have learned to fly. I noticed them falling onto the roof until they gained control. Now they have joined the flock flying around. The sun has a very large sunspot group. There was a glancing CME earlier today. Solar activity is a little lower at the moment. Good propagation with only summer storms to contend could happen. A thunderstorm would clear the skies and cool things down. Good Evening, The fir trees have two to three inches of bright green new growth. The ferns are between six and ten feet tall but not done unrolling. The hummingbirds returned and brought friends. It is quite busy right now, I have to duck when I walk out the door. They enjoy flying at eye level close enough to feel a breeze. The sun is moderately active. A number of M class flares this week, but no major CMEs are due. A mix of fast and slow streams of solar wind is pummeling the ionosphere. Should lead to some interesting and varied QSB. Summer storms will add some noise. It will start raining tonight and continue for a few days. I don't expect lighting, it's not that common here. KD5ONS - The case of the missing hummingbirds Anna's hummingbirds are the first to arrive each spring. They take advantage of my feeder for a few weeks then become more scarce. Next the Rufous hummingbirds arrive and use the feeder. This year they sipped through one feeder full, then disappeared after I refilled it. No Rufous hummingbirds for seven days. But I did notice more birds arriving. One of them has a prominent red head and breast - the Red breasted sapsucker. They make parallel rows of notches in the bark of trees. One species they harvest is the Douglas fir. I have plenty. One of them has been chopping notches in the underside of a bough right outside this window. The red flash, and the nifty inverted landing maneuver, catch my eye when I'm at the keyboard. I did a web search on them and found some interesting tidbits. One is that Rufous hummingbirds are known to follow sapsuckers around to exploit their many sap wells. They use them as another food source when flowers are lacking. Hummingbirds also feed from the clouds of tiny flying annoyances; of that I am grateful. Now I had a clue to work with, only a day later I saw a Rufous hummingbird on the underside of the bough right outside this window. When the sapsucker moved in they found a rich resource to tap, with a variety of nutrients. After a week feasting from the sap wells they are now back fighting for my feeder. I chased five of them off so I could water my plants. A number of species of butterflies enjoy my blooming chives. Good Evening, It was a good day for a hike. Warm enough to not wear a jacket, but cold enough to limit the biting flies. The soil is decompressing from the snow; the sword fern are springing up. Some bracken fern are pushing free, but mostly the forest floor is open. The seasonal stream in the northwest corner of my property is running. On the way back I heard an odd bird call. Suddenly I was sitting by mom in a blind, next to the marsh on grandpa's homestead in North Dakota. "An American Bittern. That doesn't make sense. I'm in a forest." Then I got a look at the bird. It was a crow giving the call I had not heard in years. I know they mimic but where did he hear a bittern around here? The sun is active. It has tossed so many CMEs in the last while that they cannot keep track of them all. However, one is due to hit Earth later tomorrow. Good Evening, Two days of 80 degree weather made the snow disappear. Buds are becoming leaves while flowers are blooming quickly. There were no daffodils open Wednesday, today there are fifty of them interspersed with trilliums and yellow violets. I filled the hummingbird feeder last week; now it is almost empty. Normally spring does not occur so rapidly here. The forest undergrowth is still flattened against the ground. However, biting flies began feasting early today. The sun is moderately speckled, with one unstable group spouting C class flares. Flux is fairly high so there should be some ion noise. I expect a few thunderstorms to add static. Good Evening, Very little snow remains. A little sun, a lot of rain, and higher temperatures melted the 1/2 foot of new snow from early in the week. My daffodils are finally seeing sunlight. The sun is moderately speckled and active. An M class flare could happen today, boosting the ion layer. I hope for more noise with stronger signals. Good Evening, It has been a snowy day. A fawn walked out of the forest soaked by the slush. She shook to get rid of the water, but was still dark brown. Then the sun popped out and she stood still. Depending upon the temperature I may need to shovel the roof. If I have a lot of snow when it starts raining it gets heavy, very fast. The sun has been active this week. At least two RF blackouts thus far. A stream of solar wind is due on the 27th. That may affect the forty meter net. Flux is not has high as last week but it is OK. Sunset is changing quickly so forty meters will take a dive at some point during the net. Earlier is better. Good Evening, The last inch of snow melted today. The forecast is for more but I am near snow line so it doesn't last long. The clouds dropped below me just before sunset as the temperature fell. Good Evening, Two sunny days during winter, I took advantage of both of them. I went for a walk. Today I was wondering about the lack of wildlife when I kicked up two Black-tailed does. They showed me a new path through the forest, so I followed it. They had been sleeping so I am pretty sure they only moved a hundred yards away to find a place to lie in the sun. With the tall ferns down I could see farther. Many of the mosses are blooming a bright green. Some of the lichens are brighter too. The sun is wide awake. A black out occurred over South America recently. The sunspot which caused it is well positioned for a few more shots at earth. I imagine there will be deeper QSB tomorrow. Sunspot 3217 will be visible for the next week. During that time expect a few more X class flares. A CME could be in our future. However, once the furor has subsided the ionosphere supports ten and six meters nicely. Get on the air and see. Good Evening, The sun popped out on Ground Hog day. The Pacific Northwest will get another six weeks of fog and rain. Luckily there will be some snow for variety. The sun is almost bare this week. Good Evening, The winds have slowed a bit but the rain continues. I lost a few large fir trees to wind in the SW corner of my land. The trees were exposed to the neighboring clear cut and the SW wind. Douglas Fir trees do not have a tap root; they have surface roots which are not very extensive. Soggy soil makes them more vulnerable. The sun is awake. Lots of sunspots. High levels of solar flux. Happy New Year, It was an exciting week. I got to see trees flying past my house. Now there is a stack of green alder chunks next to the driveway. After a day or two the exposed wood oxidizes to an orange hue. The roof is fine though I have ceased resetting my clocks. Power drops out at least once a day if not more often. A few limbs must be hanging from wires somewhere. The sun is tossing flares at earth again. One caused a black out yesterday, another is due Wednesday. The ionosphere should have enough ions to support comms. QSB will be moderate controlled by skip angles and the number of hops. The sun is coming back again. Merry Christmas, Winter came in like a lion. Two nights ago it dropped to 5 degrees; it is much colder in the Midwest. My well acted up for a day, I am glad I had water stored. Sunspots, but none are throwing flares. QSB may be weaker. Hopefully the signal to noise ratio will be as good as last week. Good Evening, Six inches of fresh snow covered the ground as ~30 elk moved through. They were not even looking for food, they wanted to drop into a nearby canyon for some quiet. Hunting season has them a little on edge. Since then it has been quite foggy with a lot of rain. Yesterday it rained harder with high winds. At 7 PM the power went out until 9 AM. No dipoles would have survived the storm; no snow remains. The sun is waking up again. Flux is high with many large sunspots. One of them has had C class activity. In a few days that one will aim at the earth. Others have M class level activity. CMEs have exited the sun but few in our direction. A "faint" CME may hit on the 12th. QSB could be exciting. Good Evening, Three inches of fresh snow reveals a lot. I saw a family group of four coyotes against the white backdrop. They entered the more open areas of my land covered with grasses, shrubs, and ferns under the canopy of fir and hemlock. They split into two pairs; I lost track of the farther two. The nearer ones worked as a team. One would pounce, slapping its forelegs on either side of a lump of grass or ferns. The other pounced from another direction a moment later, landing snout first to catch its prey. They took turns and did quite well for themselves, catching small rodents with a one in four success rate. Our sun has few spots, although 3153 is threatening. The solar flux rate is about the same as last week. The auroral oval shows some ions are flowing our way, but not in vast numbers (astronomically speaking of course). QSB may be lower. The best way to find out about the propagation is to try it and see, you may be surprised. Good Evening, A steady rain of fir needles fell from a windless sky. I looked up into the foggy tree to see a flock of Gray jays fluffing their feathers, shaking the branches. The temperature was near the dew point most of the day, the birds were having a hard time staying dry. The sun has few sunspot groups. The solar flux reading is down too. But the auroral oval is showing moderate ion transfer. Further reading gives me a hint - we are inside a stream of solar wind. Twenty meters may have more QSB than last week and higher noise. Good Evening, It was a busy, chilly week. On Tuesday I found myself in a field of elk. They are surprisingly noisy. As they diffuse through my property they test the rotted slash. Now I have more paths to walk and there is less forage. On Wednesday I saw a large covey of California quail pecking gravel from the road. I have never seen them at this elevation before. Then, early Thursday morning well before dawn, I was awakened by a strange noise. https://www.facebook.com/FgcuCampusNaturalists/videos/ever-heard-a-bobcat-meow-sound-on/188075285731685/ The sun has a few sunspot groups but solar wind is due to sweep the ionosphere this weekend. Things could get noisy but we will still enjoy QSB. Hopefully twenty meters will work better than last week. When I hear little noise I usually work fewer stations. Forty meters runs shortly after local sunset. Conditions change quickly as the net proceeds. Soon I will have to move it forward 30 minutes. My vertical antennas are surviving windstorms pretty well; doublets fall to flying tree limbs within a year. Past antennas provide plenty of material to make new ones. Good Evening, After a snowy week it is nice to see the sun again. On Wednesday a bird got my attention from about ten feet away. He gave me enough time to look him up on three websites. Good Evening, It was rainy and cool this week. Many color changes in the ferns and shrubs. Yesterday the rain fell heavily, then the wind kicked up. After hours of fir cones bouncing off the roof smaller branches started falling. Within an hour the power was out. Twelve hours later they had it working again. I got to read while sitting by a warm fire. The sun is growing more active. There are more sunspot groups returning. Some of them may flare sending ions our way. Good Evening, It was a cool, wet week. Wet enough for them to burn the slash in a clear cut. The clear cut spans a canyon on the way to Buxton. The canyon, and the road above it, was covered with smoke. Normally the slash is either collected for chipping, or left to feed the next generation. The sun is more active. There are fewer sunspots and the flux rate has dropped. The auroral oval shows moderate activity. Even though the sun seems quiet there are a lot of ions heading our way. Sunset is earlier but won't happen here until after the forty meter net has gone free. Long range hops may work OK. Good Evening, I spent my week practicing Y-turns in the forest. My truck still has side mirrors and tail lights :) Morning fog helped soften the deep ruts left from the thinning. Its high humidity made the soil softer but made lifting wood into the box harder. When the sun came out it got warm, up to 85, heaving wood around became soggy work. Now to warm myself by splitting and moving it again. The sun is spotty and mildly active. None of the spots are shooting at us but a steady solar wind will provide ions, QSB, and noise. I received a unique QSL card featuring a Broad-tailed Hummingbird; thank you Dwight. I have never seen one outside of a bird book. Good Evening, Seasons changed abruptly. It started with light rain; the next day it poured. Now the plants and trees are starting to change color. The storm center was followed by hot weather with moderate winds. The fir trees are sloughing years old needles. They are falling like rain. The sun does not have as many spots but it seems just as active. A gust of solar wind is due sometime tomorrow. If we are lucky it will enhance propagation. The heavy rain knocked the ferns down. Good Evening, Happy autumn. I hiked around today scouting out the next few loads of firewood. I did not get a spider web in the face, it's not cool enough for that yet, but single strands crossed the trail. I collected wood this week and found splitting it counteracts hours at a keyboard. I stand a little straighter now. The sun is covered with spots and is fairly active. There are some auroras so there will be QSB and noise. A few thunderstorms will add another note. Good Evening, The season quickly changed to fall. Night time temperatures hover around 40, with cool days around 60. The smoke is mostly gone but sunsets are still red. With no real rain fire danger is still high. Birds have started to move, I heard a few strands of geese moving around today; in a few weeks they will be headed south. The active sunspot group from two weeks ago has returned and it is as active as it was previously. It is lining up in our direction just in time for tomorrow's nets. A CME takes a few days to get here but an X class flare has faster effects. As the sun moves toward equinox forty meters is opening sooner. Tomorrow we can test it again. Good Evening, When Douglas Fir are thinner than about twelve inches in diameter they are shaded silver. As they grow that color is broken by cracks of brown. My trees were thinned a few years ago but only this season have I seen a change in their growth. On my weekly hike almost every fir tree I saw had "cracked" by some degree. Many of these trees are 50 years old and less than a foot in diameter. They will make excellent power poles one day; a quite dense interior surrounded by larger growth rings, plus they have no branches for ninety feet. The sun is active. After a string of CMEs we now have a crack in earth's magnetic. If it's not one thing ... This allows more ions into the system. I expect QSB will be moderate to intense with a variety of speeds. Summer storms with space noise will bring crackle and hiss. Sounds like a record you left in the sun and need a nickel on the tone arm to play, only the lyrics are in CW. Good Evening, Each morning this week has been foggy and cool. The forest undergrowth is green while fire danger is moderate. I followed the trail the elk took. It was easy to see where they had walked because a swath of grass was broken all in the same direction. Hunters have been driving through watching their movement. The path would take them into a deep wooded area with a stream. It is quite a hike to the bottom so few hunters get there. The sun has more spots than last week. The flux is higher too. A few active spots are ready to throw more ions our way. I expect moderate QSB along with summer storm static. Good Evening, It was a sunny, mild week with a few days with morning fog. No rain fell so the fog is helpful. The local bees pollinated the thimble berry bushes well. A lot of blossoms have set fruit due to them. Hopefully I get a few handfuls later this summer. The salmon berries are ripening; early fruit is very sour. Some wild strawberries are popping out too. Oregon grape has finished flowering and has set fruit. You can eat them but they're very seedy. It does make good jam if you strain some of them out. The sun has many spots with a number of active areas facing our way. Solar flux is at 171 at the moment. The sun is really waking up, it tossed another CME at us. Good Evening, Summer is gradually starting here in the Pacific Northwest. There was a short spell of high temperatures around field day, but since then it has been moderately cloudy and wet. More openings in the clouds appeared this week with less rainfall. Temperatures rose into the high 60s. I am trying to germinate green beans for the third time. The last two attempts garnered one seedling each. Cool, moist nights don't help. Little sun does not help either. The short growing season makes gardening a challenge at this elevation. Douglas Fir, Hemlocks, Red cedars, and ferns like this weather much better. The sun has been active this week. There was a strong solar storm and some new, large groups are growing. The largest group could produce an M-class flare. It could be aimed at us if it launches in the next few days. I am tempted to dust off my refractor, check the solar filter, and find a hole in the clouds. I have not looked at sunspots in years. This setup let me view the transit of Venus. Good Evening, Last weekend was hot, it rose into the mid 90s. Now it is back in the low 60s. Summer came and went, the morning fog has returned. The fir and hemlock have about four inches of new growth on each tip. I would expect to see deer but the thinning puts the new growth well out of reach. The birds like the open space. I am seeing more small hawks flying through, with owls at night. Four barred owls in concert is loud enough to wake me from a sound sleep. I installed and removed a number of logging applications for field day. Then I simplified matters. The K3 has four memories where I stored the exchange. For logging I thought about what I had on hand, and what I did not like about the usual suspects. Small font size with marginal lighting was the first problem. I wrote a template for a spreadsheet and changed the font size to 21. Using bold, frozen headings helped too. The spreadsheet was simple to keep updated as I scanned the bands. I could fill in call signs and exchanges on the busiest frequencies and revisit them later. The simplicity made working the contest easier. Logging the time was quick: ctl+shift+; Then find the next victim. The sun has settled down somewhat, providing a window of opportunity for tomorrow's nets. There are very few sunspots visible today. The auroral oval is weak and the K index is low. I expect less noise and lower QSB. But it is best to test one's hypotheses. Good Evening, The dry season is sneaking in, twenty minutes more a week. What were open expanses just a few weeks ago are now filled with tall ferns. They are not done growing but they do change the environment. Underneath their new canopy lies a moister, cooler micro-climate. The mountain beaver alternate between lying under the ferns and lying on top one of their piles of dirt. They eat a lot of bracken ferns, it is their major source of water. However, they do gnaw down the occasional alder sapling and my poor rhododendrons :( The sun is active. More spots than last week with higher flux activity. Both twenty and forty meters have many signals, from CW, through four types of digital tones, to voice modes. There was a variety of noise too, but it was not strong. Summer is coming, Field Day is next week so I will not be running either net. You may hear me calling CQ or running a search and pounce mission. Good Evening, I have been entertained by three squirrels today. The two young ones have fallen out of the fir tree next to me a few times, their mother dragged them back up. Then they fell onto my roof while mom chipped away at them. Then they attacked my soffit with their new teeth. Should be an interesting summer. I saw a very soggy doe yesterday as she came out of the nearby alder thicket. She stood on the gravel road and shook herself like a wet dog. It had been raining all morning so she was quite dark in color. After ridding herself of the moisture she started cropping the new grass along the road. The ferns have grown over my head and are filling in the surroundings unrolling fronds. The sword fern are pushing out new growth as are the fir trees. If it were not so wet the pollen would be bothersome. As it is my eyes only itch when I am inside after a walk. The sun has been quiet. That may be good. Or not. There is a low sunspot number with a flux reading at 106. The auroral oval is fairly quiet too. Noise should be low with low to moderate QSB. More antenna choices would be nice. I am going to find a tank of gas for my torch and solder another one together. My Weller soldering iron can't seem to provide enough heat while I am outside. Wind, temperature, or moisture don't help it. Please join us on (or near): 14050 kHz at 2200z Sunday (3 PM PDT Sunday) 7047 kHz at z Monday (5 PM PDT Sunday) 73, Kevin. [Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement
Good Evening, I started the Elecraft CW net on June 6th, 2002 to commemorate my uncle's action on that date in 1944. He started early, loading into a plane for a short flight across the Channel. Then jump out of a perfectly good aircraft, in the dark, while getting shot at. They were told to slow Panzer activity in their sector, with strict orders not to blow up any bridges. They improvised. Solar activities have been weaker this week. The flux index is just over 100. Twenty meters had less noise when I listened to it an hour ago. There were many signals up and down the band. I think it may work fairly well for us tomorrow. I worked on my vertical antenna this week during a lull between showers. I soldered more radials in place. The tests on 20 and 40 meters showed improvements on twenty meters but pretty much the same as previous experience on forty. Time to cut a new doublet and hang it as a V. It would be nice to have four or five choices for antennas memorized by the tuner. Please join us on (or near): 14050 kHz at 2200z Sunday (3 PM PDT Sunday) 7047 kHz at z Monday (5 PM PDT Sunday) 73, Kevin. KD5ONS - A female Black headed Grosbeak landed on a branch a few feet outside this window. She gave me time to look her up on the web. Obviously Grosbeak but not Rose Breasted, definitely speckled, yellow with a black head. Photo matched the patient bird so I got an all time new one. Strangely enough she may be the mate of the one I recorded last year. Small world. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
