I've got a DRO 550 that needs an enclosure and an overlay. But the DRO
350 itself is working just fine, all I need are scales that work too and
are compatible with the DRO.

Not so much as a screen saver, but a screen darkener. I use it on my
Linux laptop that is my home computer so that my room isn't flooded with
screen light when I'm trying to go to sleep at night.
Other than that, probably not much use.

not use a hardwired connection?

they did. Good on them. I think they did a good
thing. But they did it outside of the LinuxCNC development path. They
didn't come here complaining that LinuxCNC didn't fit their model of
what they wanted it to be. So they took it and changed it.
