Sounds great! Is there any sort of tentative schedule?

Update, I booked a room at the Wichita Inn Airport, for $59
(plus taxes) through Travelocity. They have more rooms at
that rate. Free breakfast, and the specifically mention
WIRED Ethernet (which usually works way better than most
motel wi-fi.)

I'm planning on driving down on Monday the 17th, and leaving
Sunday.
See you all there!

Where is everyone staying? I think last time I stayed at
the Days Inn, which looks like it is a lot closer to
Stuart's new place than it was to MPM. First time out there
I stayed at Western Holiday, which was a bit TOO cheap!
Days Inn was OK, and the airport actually was pretty quiet

We would be there Thursday late or Friday early till Sunday afternoon.

It looks like there are two of us coming from SW Wisconsin. Is there any
others from the area going?

I have a couple of projects that I will need some instruction on.

One is an Fanuc AC servo setup with a Pico setup. The other is to setup
a follower system; encoder on a spindle and a servo drive at a specific

On a similar note. I have wondered why we could not have another option
for run from line "X" where the interpreter actually reads all of the
previous lines but does not act on them just to make sure all of the
persistent codes are set correctly for the program to run from the line
without having to worry about the units, coordinate system, spindle
speed, feedrate, etc.

Just a thought as sometimes restarting a program partially thorough can
be a hair raising experience.

One thing that I find myself coming back to, and is looking increasingly
like the real answer to "jog while paused" is extending the 'position.txt"
file, or a close relative, to include "last G-code line completed' and a
collection of states such as tool and spindle speed.

Some users have said that mains power is unreliable where they are. If the
power goes off mid-job, then they want a pop-up next restart saying so.

Is is possible that we have over-complicated the whole jog-while-paused
thing? Could it really be as easy as "re-start unfinished job" ?

Mostly I'm looking forward to seeing everyone--I'm thrilled that
you're thinking about coming.

Besides the social aspects, some of my goals are to
 - take a look at some of the things in our github tracker that are
   languishing
 - dig out some old branches of my own that need more work before
   merging
 - talk about 2.8 plans and timeline
 - confuse my instagram peeps by pictures of linuxcnc things

I won't be bringing a CNC machine but I'll probably cart along some
of the ARM boards that are working(-ish) with 2.7 and master branch.
Maybe work on hm2-spi for bbb as yet another new(-to-me) project.

I don't think we have a specific machine retrofit type project for
Wichita, but who knows what is to be found in Stuart's new place,
Helix Machine. Also I heard that Seb is likely to be bringing a
robot arm that is ready to be hooked up to a mesa board. (the
kinematics are in the can already)

Personally, I anticpate being there starting Wednesday or Thursday
evening, and leaving Sunday early afternoon.

Jeff and I would both like to come, but we have a conflict Oct 3-14.

The following week would be much better for us, Monday the 17th (or
whenever we would start) through that following weekend, 22/23.

Would this change mess up anyone else?

Hi Stuart,

Total change of subject here. Lcnc already had feed driven by a pin. I
wonder if anyone has tried
monitoring the load on the spindle motor and adjusting for constant load
not velocity. What I'm
thinking here is slowing down for corners to control chatter. If this
really works then it should be useful for the usual hobby machine
(wimpy) and for those trying to get better surface quality on production
machines. just a random thought.

I wonder if Scorchworks' "Gcoderipper" can do that?

http://www.scorchworks.com/Gcoderipper/gcoderipper.html

It doesn't list 'mirror' as one of its features, but it does list
'scale', and 'mirror' is just a scale of -1.

I've heard good things about another Scorchworks product called
F-engrave. It does text V-carving from Truetype fonts, and other tricks.

Both are open source projects that run on Linux and work well with
LinuxCNC. We have f-engrave packages in our debian archive already
("sudo apt-get install f-engrave"), if there's a success story or two
about gcoderipper i'll add packages for it too.

Something that reads in a G-code file then outputs a G-code file that is mirror
imaged along either the X or Y axis. Then when one wants to cut the mirror
image of the original, simply load that file. It would need to handle cut
direction changes if needed.

We will be set up to start Monday for anyone that arrives then.

I just got back from the CNC Workshop in Dearborn. Gave an
all-day LinuxCNC seminar with
Robert Luken. By going back and forth, I managed to make my
voice last all day. I gave my first ever seminar completely
on Halscope. There's a lot to cover for people who don't use
a digital scope every day.

Hopefully I will have recovered from that by October. We
have another experiment in December, I don't yet know the
date. So, t looks like this ought to fit right into my
schedule.

2016-06-15 Thread Stuart Stevenson
Gentlemen,
I propose the week of Oct 3rd through whenever the last person leaves.
Check your schedules against these dates and let the list know if you have
conflicts.
I think the goal should be to have a schedule set by July 30. That gives us
45 days to make changes and allow time for travel arrangements to be made
after July 30.
This date is nothing more than my attempt to set a goal to get everyone
here and have a good time. The date is fluid on purpose.

Sebastian,

I am in the Denver area and I know thee are several others here who are
LCNC enthusiasts (or perhaps newbies like me) who would love to get

inclined to lend your expertise to such a group, I would be happy to
organize a meeting place, Meetups, etc. Please let me know if this is

Gentlemen,
I have a 12 foot conference table and another long table in a large room.
We can easily seat 16-20 people.
Air conditioned and plenty of power and internet.
Any time would work but for playing in the shop and being cooler late
September or early October is probably the best time.
We can do it any date or I can set the date. Someone start the ball rolling.
I am about a mile from MPM so it is close to where it was before.

Thanks for the offer. I think it's better than the offer I made on IRC

Do you have something like the conference room at MPM, where we can all

Since the next few weeks came and went, we're looking at some time in

2016-05-03 Thread Steve Stallings
The area around Tech Shop and the Best Western is modern
suburbia, nothing like downtown Detroit.

The Best Western itself is an old school full service large
motel complex. Well maintained but looks like something from
the 1980s era. Location is not walkable except for the on site
restaurant and other facilities. A few minutes by car gets you
to shopping malls and such.

There are many places to stay near the airport for prices in
the mid 50s but they are 20 minutes away and offer only the
basics.

The facility at Tech Shop is great. It is a former Ford Motor
Company training center. Modern, lots of space, power, internet,
and free coffee during the show. There is a machine shop that
is fairly well equipped, but you must make arrangements if you
need to use it because it runs as a traditional Tech Shop site.

Many in the crowd last year were folks that I have seen at the
previous CNC Workshops going all the way back to the original
shows at Roland's place.

If you are close by, I highly recommend dropping in Saturday
morning as it is free then.

http://www.thecncworkshop.com/

Regular admission with seminars is $125 but if you want to
be an exhibitor (non-commercial) you can bring stuff to show
and demonstrate and this will get you $50 off of admission.

The Dearborn Inn is apparently the best-rated hotel in the vicinity
according to my work colleagues. But it appear to not be exactly
inexpensive.

Everyone should register. Last year we had a discount deal for
presenters, but I have not heard if TechShop is doing that again. I will
check into it.

The Best Western is near, and that whole area is Ford country, with many
office buildings and the big Ford Rouge plant. It is not in the 'real'
Detroit. It is cheaper than the hotel from last year. I am staying there.

We will not have any facility for video recording the presentations. I
had many years experience in doing training for DEC and found you either
ruin the class by accommodating the video, or ruin the video by ignoring
it. Videos made form the back of the room are always lousy and useless.
Not that I have strong feeling about it of course :)

We have no objection if someone wants to hold up their phone or iPad and
record the session.

Living in the UK, I too am far away, so videos would be very welcome, and might
also be a useful general resource for the wider community.

I stayed at the Country Inn and Suites 24555 Michigan Ave in
Dearborn, fairly close, and Tech Shop had a special rate
reserved for attendees. Not cheap, but better than the
going rate around there.

I would like to come to the workshop and I could possibly present. If we
are coming as a presenter do we register as a student on the webpage?

I see the Best Western Greenfield Inn is close by. Has anybody stayed

unfamiliar with the greater Detroit area.

I am not sure I can make it for Wednesday thru Saturday. I might be able
to make it for Thursday and Friday.

I would really like to see more linuxCNC presence at the workshop. So
far Jon Elson and Bob Luken have agreed to do a session on LinuxCNC, but
I could make a lot more room for Linux sessions. I have several slots on
Friday which I want to be 'how I did my system' talks by users. There is
room in the techShop to have a linux area. There will be a few vendors-
Tormach included.

We have set Saturday as a free open to the public day to a swap meet and
the vendor displays.

This is not that big of an event- it is really the continuation of what
started at Rolands shop in Galesburg IL several years ago where linux
had a huge presence.

Why don't you guys meet up at the CNC Workshop, in Dearborn Michigan?

It is at the Tech Shop Detroit, which is a very interesting place (as is
the Henry Ford museum, and Greenfield Village, almost adjacent to Tech Shop)

The CNC Workshop could still do with some LinuxCNC discussions/seminars,
and I really don't think I'll be able to make it this year.

Ron Ginger would (I believe) be quite open to having some more LinuxCNC
talks, even if very informal, and we do need to get out there and promote
this incredible bit of software.

Just an idea - John.

There's "The CNC Workshop 2016", June 8-16 in Detroit:
http://www.thecncworkshop.com/

That seems like a big expo with vendors and classes and things (which is
important for project visibility), though i prefer a more focused
developer-centric hackfest like what we did at Tx/Rx.
