Re: [EVDL] How Uber's Auton-EVs will reshape the economy

2015-06-09 Thread Peri Hartman via EV
Yes, there will still be a demand for vehicles, but surely less than
today. While it's one thing to try to predict the number of vehicles
needed to serve the population, it's another to predict the effect on
highways.

I have not seen any research on the effect on highways yet. Just
because the same vehicle can be used for multiple trips doesn't mean
that the number of vehicles on the highway will decrease. Here are some
thoughts to mull over:

- If usage rates are highest during peak times, that might encourage
people to spread out their commute times, reducing the number of
vehicles needed and the street capacities.

- Because a user wouldn't have to deal with parking, it is conceivable
that mass transit use could increase: a car could drop you off at a rail
station (or BRT, etc) and, if needed, you could take another private
vehicle at the other end. No waiting, very little walking.

- Many users would likely want to own their own vehicle for some of the
same reasons they do today: instantly available, can leave your
belongings in it, familarity.

- In theory, more vehicles could be crammed on a highway at high speeds
since control and reaction times should be more accurate.

- On city streets, I assume there would be less capacity improvement
since it's hard to get closer than bumper-to-bumper.

For anybody skeptical about this, I have two questions. How many
people had smart phones in 2005? How many people do you know today who
don’t have a smart phone?

 Couple more thoughts on this

First, I think there's still a logistical challenge to be faced with
replacing the commuter car fleet with autonomous Johnny Cab taxies --
namely, that there's a reason why rush hour is a clusterfuck of
single-occupancy vehicles. To a first approximation, we'll still need
roughly the same number of self-driving public / private cars as we do
today, because we'll still have roughly the same number of people
going to work at roughly the same time. And those people will be as
interested in sharing a ride with other people in the future as they
are today. That is, it seems to me like the estimates in the article
are naïvely assuming a fleet sized for the average demand will
suffice, whereas the fleet still needs to be sized for peak demand.
Electric grid operators could offer some insights to these analysts.

Around here (Silicon Valley), the commute congestion period lasts about
four hours in the evening from 3pm to 7pm. It seems to be a little
more spread out in the morning. A vehicle that takes someone home from
work between 3pm and 4pm could take somebody else home from work from
5pm to 6pm and pick up somebody else at 7pm and take them home. This
indicates that peak size could be on the order of 1/3 of todays
commuter fleet.

Would a driverless car be allowed to use the HOV lane?

Illegal may be too strong a word, but the NiMH patents were purchased by a
group including Texaco and Chevron that refused to license the cells in any
format large enough to use in a plug-in vehicle. You wouldn't be facing jail
time, but you could face huge lawsuits if you manufactured cells without the
patent holder's approval.

Quite a few of the sordid details are laid out here:

Very interesting... can you give us some numbers on the 'capacity' (5%, 50%,
99%), that is recovered and how long this is good for (1 day, 6 months, 3
years)? Will this work for all NiMH or only cells that hold a certain voltage
for a certain period of time?

I have a Honda Insight that has NiMH cells and this would be great.

Re: [EVDL] Large Format NiMH Battery Patent Expirations?

Thanks Michael!

As to the legality of manufacturing and selling Large Format NiMH:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patent_encumbrance_of_large_automotive_NiMH_batteries

Battery reconditioning? I'd need to pull the batteries and find another
vehicle. At 65
hours per cycle, 3 cycles per cell and 240 cells that figures to 46,800
hours (over 5 years!)
to reconditioning with a superbrain989.
Lee Hart's battery balancer could do the job many times faster.

  2340 hours at TheHybridShop.

  Here is the HybridShops' email:
"Well, the theory of the conditioning process working is right on.the
issue will be the time it would take. These are 95 amp hour batteries. When
you compare that to the 5.5 - 6.5 amp hour batteries in the hybrids things
get very, very time consuming.
A discharge using the BDU would likely take over 20 hours if the pack was
fully charged. A charge cycle would take over 45 hours. The charger
supplied with the BDU has a max charge rate of 2.5 amps.
So, could it be done yes.but it would be weeks worth of work. The
discharger only has 20 channels so it would take more than one discharge
(at over 20 hours each) for every cycle and then the approximately 45 hours
of charge time for each cycle.
It would take one full cycle (initial discharge, 100% SOC charge,
power/energy test) just to see what the pack condition is (like on any
hybrid) but with the time involved that could be a pretty big cost only to
find out the pack may be suffering from irreversible changes. These packs
are utilized much differently than hybrids (deeper cycling during normal
use) so they will age differently.
It could be an interesting project but.. "

David,

NiMH can recover capacity by charging and discharging to a particular
protocol. The electrode gradually grows into a surface that has less
surface area and the "crystalline" structure can be regrown into a better
configuration. We have a community college in the western part of the
state that teaches mechanics how to operate the equipment and it is fairly
common to do this with Priuses and Hondas - maybe the RAV4 as well.

The franchised shops are called The Hybrid Shop and they are affiliated
with this test equipment company:

Automotive Research & Design
http://www.go2hev.com/home.html

I have not used them or the equipment but I believe it has merit.

I certainly never heard about any illegal aspects of this. I think that is
incorrect.

Re: [EVDL] How Uber's Auton-EVs will reshape the economy

2015-06-09 Thread Cor van de Water via EV
If cars on the road use computers to actually drive then there will be no more
traffic jams.
Jams occur because people are irrational (think they can go faster by speeding
up with
traffic in front of them) and have slow response time (need many yards of
braking distance
for response time).

With connected computer controlled cars, you can drive almost bumper to bumper
at speed
so the capacity of existing roads is an order of magnitude (!) higher, meaning
that each lane
can transport the same amount of people as a multi-lane road today.
In addition - *if* the roads goes over its capacity, cars will not stop-and-go
which
deteriorates capacity excessively, but there will be a graceful degradation
that allows
cars to either seek alternative routes in real time or simply accept a few
minutes of slower
(but constant) speed to adjust to the capacity reduction.
The automatic self-driving cars will optimize their utilization, just like a
phone network
optimizes the amount of circuits for the maximum simultaneous amount of calls.
That means that there can be an "oversubscription" rate typically in the 5 to
10 times,
meaning that only 10 to 20% of cars are needed to transport the same amount of
people
as currently with private car ownership.

To the people who bring up cornercases like "my wife is pregnant and I need to
have a car
sitting ready in my garage to jump into and race to the hospital", I would like
to say that
there are always cases where a solution needs to be tailored. I can see a
business case for
a differentiation in autonomous car subscription, where you can get cheaper
contract and
faires if you are OK with ordering longer in advance and potentially waiting
longer to be
picked up and a premium subscription or a temporary high-urgency add-on service
that will
make sure that there will always be a car within 1 minute from your home to
bring you to
the hospital with urgency. Lots of opportunity to make great business cases
once there are
automated vehicles on the road.
Of course there will always be cases where it does not work as intended and
where it makes
sense to keep a private vehicle available for an emergency, but I suspect that
those
cases will become more rare over time. Similar to the evolution of EVs that we
see these days.

For anybody skeptical about this, I have two questions. How many people had
smart phones in 2005? How many people do you know today who don’t have a smart
phone?

Around here (Silicon Valley), the commute congestion period lasts about four
hours in the evening from 3pm to 7pm. It seems to be a little more spread out
in the morning. A vehicle that takes someone home from work between 3pm and
4pm could take somebody else home from work from 5pm to 6pm and pick up
somebody else at 7pm and take them home. This indicates that peak size could
be on the order of 1/3 of todays commuter fleet.

Would a driverless car be allowed to use the HOV lane?

[EVDL] Large Format NiMH Battery Patent Expirations?

2015-06-09 Thread David Miller via EV
Hi All!

I drive a 2002 Toyota Rav4-EV. Yes, the one with
24 NiHM Panasonic EV-95 batteries! Patents by Cobasys, Ovonics,
Texaco, Chevron, BASF,

The pack has pushed 131 thousand miles over 13 years. It has
dropped to around 65% original capacity. Power is similarly limited.

Last year I searched extensively for replacements but discovered
they are illegal. (See 'Who Killed the Electric Car' for details if
you don't know already.)

 * But I also read again and again that **the patents were due to expire*
*in 2013 and 2014!*

Can anyone here comment on the current patent status for large
format NiMH batteries?

  Will Gold Peak manufacture GP100EVHs?
  Nilar?
  EVBTech.com?
  Panasonic?
  Sanyo?

Is there any reason to hope?

Couple more thoughts on this

First, I think there's still a logistical challenge to be faced with replacing
the commuter car fleet with autonomous Johnny Cab taxies -- namely, that
there's a reason why rush hour is a clusterfuck of single-occupancy vehicles.
To a first approximation, we'll still need roughly the same number of
self-driving public / private cars as we do today, because we'll still have
roughly the same number of people going to work at roughly the same time. And
those people will be as interested in sharing a ride with other people in the
future as they are today. That is, it seems to me like the estimates in the
article are naïvely assuming a fleet sized for the average demand will suffice,
whereas the fleet still needs to be sized for peak demand. Electric grid
operators could offer some insights to these analysts.

But, of more immediate interest...an autonomous fleet _might_ potentially be
practical with much more limited per-vehicle range than is traditionally
assumed for personal BEVs. A car with "only" the Leaf's 100-mile range could be
in use for a couple hours and take a few fares to their destinations, break for
half an hour for charging, and get back on the road. With computerized
dispatch, passengers would never even have to think about range unless their
one-way trip exceeded the vehicle's practical ability -- possible in a
sprawling metropolis, but rare...and, in such cases, it'd be only the most
minor of inconveniences for the system to have a transfer vehicle ready and
waiting at the halfway point, which is geometrically very likely to be close to
the center of the biggest downtown area anyway.

Of course, even then, more range is better; a car with a 400-mile range could
run fares all day long and only have to stop to charge in the dead of
night...but that's a question of minimizing capital investment for the cab
company, shaving the number of cars needed for the system and permitting them
to better centralize charging facilities.

...and, of course, it may well be the case in the interim that an autonomous
ICE-based taxicab will be a more practical initial platform than a BEV version,
with the operators starting with a central fueling station whose facilities get
converted to an electric charging station as they replace the fleet with
electrics

Cheers,

This is the big wildcard -- and not just as it relates to vehicles, electric or
otherwise.

Not since the Industrial Revolution has there been such a massive shift in the
job market...and this round of universal automation is set to make the
Industrial Revolution look like a minor managerial restructuring.

As I recall, the transportation sector is actually the largest in America
today, with drivers the majority of its employees. The article elsewhere claims
that this industry will be effectively eliminated ("PricewaterhouseCoopers
predicts that the number of vehicles on the road will be reduced by 99%,
estimating that the fleet will fall from 245 million to just 2.4 million
vehicles."), something I'd take with a large grain of salt...

...but even just the obsolescence of the professional driver, from taxis to
tractor-trailers, will be monumental.

And, for once, there really isn't any realistic alternative for employment. In
the Industrial Revolution, farm laborers could readily adapt to factory jobs.
Factory workers were then told to find jobs in the service industry, which was
possible but generally a step down the skill and economic ladder. But now that
we're automating the service industry...what job, exactly, is an
automated-out-of-existence taxi-driving ex-machinist supposed to get? Even fast
food isn't an option; the burger joints already have far more people banging
down the doors to work for them than they can employ.

At some point, and very soon, we as a society are going to have to come to
grips with the fact that, for the first time in human history, there are many
more people than there's work that needs to be done -- and, very soon, only
enough work to keep busy a minority of the population.

Somehow or another, of necessity, we're going to have to make idleness a
virtue. But how?

I have spent quite a bit of time lately thinking about autonomous cars, and
I wanted to summarize my current thoughts and predictions. Most people --
experts included -- seem to think that the transition to driverless vehicles
will come slowly over the coming few decades, and that large hurdles exist
for widespread adoption. I believe that this is significant underestimation.
Autonomous cars will be commonplace by 2025 and have a near monopoly by
2030, and the sweeping change they bring will eclipse every other innovation
our society has experienced. They will cause unprecedented job loss and a
fundamental restructuring of our economy, solve large portions of our
environmental problems, prevent tens of thousands of deaths per year, save
millions of hours with increased productivity, and create entire new
industries that we cannot even imagine from our current vantage point.

The transition is already beginning to happen. Elon Musk, Tesla Motor's CEO,
says that their 2015 models will be able to self-drive 90 percent of the
time. 1 And the major automakers aren't far behind - according to Bloomberg
News, GM's 2017 models will feature "technology that takes control of
steering, acceleration and braking at highway speeds of 70 miles per hour or
in stop-and-go congested traffic." 2 Both Google 3 and Tesla 4 predict that
fully-autonomous cars - what Musk describes as "true autonomous driving
where you could literally get in the car, go to sleep and wake up at your
destination" - will be available to the public by 2020.

How it will unfold
Industry experts think that consumers will be slow to purchase autonomous
cars - while this may be true, it is a mistake to assume that this will
impede the transition. Morgan Stanley's research shows that cars are driven
just 4% of the time, 5 which is an astonishing waste considering that the
average cost of car ownership is nearly $9,000 per year. 6 Next to a house,
an automobile is the second most expensive asset that most people will ever
buy - it is no surprise that ride sharing services like Uber and car sharing
services like Zipcar are quickly gaining popularity as an alternative to car
ownership. It is now more economical to use a ride sharing service if you
live in a city and drive less than 10,000 miles per year. 7 The impact on
private car ownership is enormous: a UC-Berkeley study showed that vehicle
ownership among car sharing users was cut in half. 8 The car purchasers of
the future will not be you and me - cars will be purchased and operated by
ride sharing and car sharing companies.

And current research confirms that we would be eager to use autonomous cars
if they were available. A full 60% of US adults surveyed stated that they
would ride in an autonomous car 9 , and nearly 32% said they would not
continue to drive once an autonomous car was available instead. 10 But no
one is more excited than Uber - drivers take home at least 75% of every
fare. 11 It came as no surprise when CEO Travis Kalanick recently stated
that Uber will eventually replace all of its drivers with self-driving cars.
12

A Columbia University study suggested that with a fleet of just 9,000
autonomous cars, Uber could replace every taxi cab in New York City 13 -
passengers would wait an average of 36 seconds for a ride that costs about
$0.50 per mile. 14 Such convenience and low cost will make car ownership
inconceivable, and autonomous, on-demand taxis - the 'transportation cloud'
- will quickly become dominant form of transportation - displacing far more
than just car ownership, it will take the majority of users away from public
transportation as well. With their $41 billion valuation, 15 replacing all
171,000 taxis 16 in the United States is well within the realm of
feasibility - at a cost of $25,000 per car, the rollout would cost a mere
$4.3 billion.

Fallout
The effects of the autonomous car movement will be staggering.
PricewaterhouseCoopers predicts that the number of vehicles on the road will
be reduced by 99%, estimating that the fleet will fall from 245 million to
just 2.4 million vehicles. 17

Disruptive innovation does not take kindly to entrenched competitors - like
Blockbuster, Barnes and Noble, Polaroid, and dozens more like them, it is
unlikely that major automakers like General Motors , Ford , and Toyota will
survive the leap. They are geared to produce millions of cars in dozens of
different varieties to cater to individual taste and have far too much
overhead to sustain such a dramatic decrease in sales. I think that most
will be bankrupt by 2030, while startup automakers like Tesla will thrive on
a smaller number of fleet sales to operators like Uber by offering
standardized models with fewer options.

Ancillary industries such as the $198 billion automobile insur

We’re no experts in politics, but we know this much: the state of California
has been trying to become a leader when it comes to its environmental bills.
Luckily, some of the reforms Hollywood icon Arnold Schwarzenegger made
produced a starting point for other politicians to follow. Take President
Pro-Tem of the California State Senate Kevin de Leon, who has been pushing
forward a bill that apparently comes to the likes of the actor.

To understand how blowing up an old Cadillac with a grenade launcher helps
the environment we first need to look at the bill California senator has
been pushing forward. Long story short, the point is the State is helping
low-income families save money with fuel-efficient and ultra-clean cars.

The pilot project is called the Enhanced Fleet Modernization Program (EFMP)
and is currently running in the Greater Los Angeles area and San Joaquin
Valley.

According to the California Environmental Protection Agency, the program
works by providing increasingly larger cash payments for the lowest-income
families to move up to the very cleanest cars. “Under this program, for
example, it is possible for a family that meets the income guidelines to
receive $12,000 toward the purchase of an electric car,” the bill is
described.

But like any other pilot program, the best way to get acknowledgment is to
be creative, to come up with bold ideas people will remember. So what did de
Leon do? He destroyed a car in public while making sure the press was
watching. According to Biz Journals, he said something about California
leading a green revolution. Then, while holding a small girl in his arms, he
cheered alongside a small army of environmental advocates and watched how an
old Ford Ranger was being crushed.

Here’s where Schwarzenegger comes in. The Terminator star posted a 60-second
video in which he’s thanking de Leon for his efforts to put more green cars
in the hands of those who will actually use it. Whether or not he knew about
the little car-crushing the Senate's leader did, we don’t know. But one
thing is clear, the two share the same views on making a green reform look
mean.

California is introducing a new ‘Plus-Up’ pilot project that should make
plug-in hybrids and electric vehicles a lot more affordable.

Considering recent news that prices on used electric cars are on a downward
spiral, and with families potentially eligible to receive as much as $12,000
toward the purchase of an electric car (used is fine)—plus up to $2,000 for
a charging unit—some households could land an electric vehicle at net-zero
cost.

If you live in California and think this is great news, it is. But hold on
before you head to the dealership. To qualify, you have to live in one of
two problematic air-pollution zones: either the South Coast Air Quality
Management District (covering some of Greater Los Angeles) or the San
Joaquin Valley Air Pollution Control District.

Specifically, within those regions, you must reside in “a zip code that
contains a disadvantaged census tract,” as the Air Resource Board explains
(this document, with a series of localized maps, helps clarify that).

Cleaner transportation for price-pinched households
Simply put, buyers with the lowest incomes, purchasing the cleanest
vehicles, are eligible for the highest incentive amounts—provided as “cash
payments.” Retirees in gated subdivisions and households in other affluent
communities probably won’t qualify for this one.

Those who are considered by the program to be Low Income (225 percent of the
federal poverty level or less) qualify for a hybrid that’s rated higher than
35 mpg, or $9,500 toward a plug-in hybrid or electric vehicle. Meanwhile,
Moderate Income households (226 to 300 percent of the poverty level) qualify
for $5,000 toward those hybrids, or $7,500 toward a

This month marks the first anniversary of the launch of the BMW i3 in the
US. The first car went to Boston resident, Charles Rabie on May 2nd, 2015,
the second, to our very own New Jersey resident, Pamela Thwaite, a.k.a.
ElectraGirl and fellow New Jersey Resident Eddie Bortell.

The cars had arrived at port in the US earlier in the month with the first
deliveries starting on May 3rd, 2015. Last minute issues over the Monroney
sticker on the models with range extenders installed, delayed their delivery
by nearly a month until May 2ist, with another New Jersey resident, Tom
Moloughney taking first delivery of that model.

The i3 was born to be a city car, indeed, its prototype was named the
Mega-City car however, many owners have taken to the car as their primary
vehicle pushing milages far beyond city limits. Aided by the gasoline
range-extender, Tom Moloughney drove his up to Vermont, a total of 462 miles
there and back.

One year on and BMW have sold more than 20,000 examples globally of this
clean-sheet interpretation of what the electric car should look like for a
city environment. To celebrate, a few members of the i3 Facebook group –
that started life with the first orders in 2013 – gathered together to plan
an anniversary, BMW were invited and before long the event turned into a
nationwide celebration with dealers across the US participating. Those that
did, offered t-shirts and badges to attendees as well as raffling JuiceBox
Pro 40 EVSEs.

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) — An all-electric supercar developed in Silicon
Valley was on display at the Gumball3000 rally event in San Francisco
Wednesday.

The Renovo Motors Coupe features a design based on the iconic Shelby Daytona
Coupe from the 1960’s. The Renovo team worked with Shelby American to
develop the body and chassis.

The Coupe’s stats are staggering, with 1,000 ft-lbs of torque, and over 500
horsepower on tap, 0-60 mph comes in just 3.4 seconds.

The all-electric sports car only has a range of about 100-miles, but is
capable of charging fully in just thirty minutes.

The coupe’s technology may eventually trickle down into cars for the masses,
but for now prices start around half a million dollars.
