Exchange Bandwidth
Can the bandwidth that exchange uses be changed. When large attachments are sent the internet suffers too much. Permission Issue?
Windows NT4.0/6a domain running Exchange 5.5/4 single site. User is primary windows NT account for his mailbox. User gets fired, I disable his NT account. If the user was connected through a VPN at 10:00AM and had his Outlook XP client open, then at 11:00AM I disabled his account and he never closed the application or disconnected from his VPN connection, would he still be able to send e-mail? Somehow this user was able to send out an e-mail an hour after his account was disabled. I checked my VPN log and he logged on before he was fired but didn't log off until 3 hours after he was canned (and his account disabled). I was st00pid in assuming that the manager at that location would physically remove him from his PC. If you're saying no, that this is not possible, how else could he have done it? Nope. RE: Exchange Bandwidth
I don't believe that you can limit the bandwidth using ISA. You can only create Bandwidth priorities. As I said, if you want to limit bandwidth, you need to look at some sort of QoS (Quality of Service) hardware device (Sitara, PacketShaper are 2 that come to mind) that allows you to actually specify limits in terms of bandwidth. What ISA will give you is just prioritizing traffic. That may give you what you are looking for. Set SMTP traffic to a low priority (lower number is lower priority) and everything else gets higher priority. I don't know if that will accomplish what you are wanting to do though. RE: Reccomended Black Lists
The best thing to do is what my home ISP does. They use relays.osirusoft.com and add an X-Whatevertheylike header to each email from a listed IP address. Then users can filter possible spams based on that header's presence. So tagging as possible spam, but not blocking, and then using rules to move incoming mails into a possible junk mail folder is a good compromise. And real mail which ends up there on a regular basis can be dealt with by filtering rules which deal with it before the spam rule. RE: Reccomended Black Lists
I have been using the blacklists for about three months now. While it's easier for me to figure out the local ISP's that will be used by our constituents and put them on white lists, I can see where Martin and others are coming from. For a while I was using the FIVETEN Blackhole list combined. Then I discovered they were blocking ALL of Yahoo. I mean wow! Seemed a bit extreme to me. I did stop using that list for obvious reasons. It does seem a little risky to rely on other people's judgment for the lists, although until there is an organization that will take over these types of lists that is more reliable and has a set way to get on and off a list, it's pretty much the only thing we have. We use Spamcop.net's to good overall effect. They're the only one I've found that provides enough information as to why a domain is listed, as well as easy access to have a site removed once the issues are corrected. -- Roger D. Hmmm... And what percentage of those are valid business email? I concur with AB's assessment that they are mostly run by vigilantes. There is a fairly famous exchange on this list about a year or two ago, by Jim Schwartz, Paul Cumming, et al, concerning Dr, Cumming's own RBL. I think its required reading for anyone considering RBL usage. -- Roger D. FW: IMC bouncing any attachment
Hello all, I need a little assistance here. I am running NT4 SP6a Ex 5.5 SP4 in a multi-site hub/spoke arrangement. It appears that the hub server (also the IMC for the entire ORG) is bouncing any external email that has any attachments in it. The filename/size/or sender doesn't seem to matter. The only error I found was that yesterday (when all of this started happening) the C: drive had only had 120MB of free space and the IMC had stopped running. Once I had freed up disk space, I restarted the server and all appeared to be fine. Since then, though, it has bounced any attachment from any sender to anyone inside the Exchange ORG. There are no Exchange related errors in the Event Logs on this server at all. I am totally befuddled by this. Please help, as this is urgent. RE: Reccomended Black Lists
I can see both sides of the argument here... I have several clients running a program called Xwall. Xwall allows you to specify Internet RBL/SPAM lists (We are using SpamCop Osirusoft) It's also got a Bayesian filter. You can specify what to do with the positive spam hits. For example, you can delete it, generate a return message, or FORWARD it to a different address. We generally set it up to forward confirmed spam to a, Exchange public folder. There is an employee who's job it is to filter through this stuff to determine if it is spam or not. One of the sites where we have this installed gets about 2500 messages a day. (Yes it's a smaller site than many of you deal with.) We have determined that about 70% of that is spam. We have found the RBL/SPAM list method only falsely confirms a message as spam about once a month. I know if we started adding more RBL/SPAM lists, that number would go way up. Generally, the consensus with most employees is that they would rather miss an important message once in a while than deal with the hundreds of spam message they get each day. Since management seems to get more of the spam, they were very happy about reducing it. -Kevin _ List posting FAQ: http://www.swinc.com/resource/exch_faq.htm Web Interface: http://intm-dl.sparklist.com/cgi-bin/lyris.pl?enter=exchangetext_mode=lang=english To unsubscribe: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Exchange List admin:[EMAIL PROTECTED]

RE: Permission Issue?
Missy, In an NT 4.0 domain environment? I have the same environment as Scott has. Ex5.5 SP4 on a Win2000 SP2 machine, running in an NT 4.0 domain. The only difference is that they are using VPN...we are not at this time. However, we use one of our Help Desk temps occasionally to break up the boredom. We flip his network account between enabled and disabled every 20 minutes or so, for an hour or two, and depending on where the DC's are in their 15-minute refresh cycle, it can take as little as a minute for him to be locked out of everything. When he is locked out, the system asks him to put in his name and password every time he tries to send an e-mail and then subsequently denies his request. It also locks him out of any network connectivity. It does let him continue to use his workstation though. Scott...the only thing I can think of, is that you have changed the default refresh value for the DC's from 15 minutes to over an hour. -Original Message- From: Missy Koslosky [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, July 29, 2003 8:47 AM To: Exchange Discussions Subject: Re: Permission Issue? RE: IMC bouncing any attachment

Recently, when accessing webmail the server will hang for up to 3-5 minutes after entering NT domain credentials. It eventually gets to the mailbox. I checked the directory security for the website in IIS 5.0 and it is set to anonymous and clear text. Does anyone know of anything that could be causing this? My understanding (which may well be flawed, but hey, this is my very own understanding, ya know?) is that Exchange doesn't really care about this. I have found the culprit. Apparently NAVMSE (AV running on the server) was hung scanning a message and caused the server to bounce any other attachments (still not quite sure why). RE: Reccomended Black Lists
...0%...I am using SpamAssassin along with Besian on a Linux box as well as Trend Emanager. Don't get me wrong, subscribing to a Black List alone could have a major impact on the outcome of SPAM blocks and actual valid mail. We have our messaging system learning the points, addresses, etc as well as the X-SPAM STATUS. I too agree to some extent of other re:'s, and had a few dealing's with them myself, but as the question was just about Recommended Black Lists and not how to make use of you topology to prevent SPAM. -- Roger D. There is no accountability for these lists. They can do as they please and most often do. I'm not going to trust my business email to someone like that. RE: Reccomended Black Lists
Thanks everyone for your valued opinions and recommendations of black lists. I'm going to give black lists a try and use a tag-only option initially. If I get reports of false positives, I'll know that black lists will not work for me. Hmmm... And what percentage of those are valid business email? I concur with AB's assessment that they are mostly run by vigilantes. There is a fairly famous exchange on this list about a year or two ago, by Jim Schwartz, Paul Cumming, et al, concerning Dr, Cumming's own RBL. RE: Secondary Address Book
If you already have the Notes Connector setup you can just add the contacts you want to the Notes Connector (if they are in a seperate directory then the mass population) and then they will just import into a directory that you create on AD. I don't know if you said you were on AD or not. But just giving you another option. _ John Bowles Exchange Engineer OIG/HHS [EMAIL PROTECTED] mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] -Original Message- From: mh exch [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, July 29, 2003 2:22 PM To: Exchange Discussions Subject: RE: Secondary Address Book Once I have created and set permissions on the PF how do I import the csv file into the PF ?? -Original Message- From: Martin Blackstone [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, July 29, 2003 12:11 PM To: Exchange Discussions Subject: RE: Secondary Address Book Sure -Original Message- From: mh exch [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, July 29, 2003 11:12 AM To: Exchange Discussions Subject: RE: Secondary Address Book So I would create a public folder with the name of the address book I want then import them into the public folder ? RE: Secondary Address Book
Actually, your EASIEST option if it was Ex5.5, would be to export them out of Notes to a .csv file, massage the .csv file so that you have them all set as Custom Recipients, then import them all to the GAL of the Exchange Server via the Tools / Directory Import... function. Whether the process is the same in E2k, I can't say. However, due to the fact that the admins for our Ex5.5 org won't let me add 22,000 CR to the GAL, I have to do this for the GAL that is exported as a .csv from our parent company. So far, the only solution I have found to do this is to use File / Import and export... / Import from another program or file and then choose the CSV (windows) option to import them to the contacts folder of the mailbox. Once you've done that, move all the contacts to the PF. It's a PIA, but even after asking this list a couple of times, I haven't found an easier way to do it...Outlook doesn't allow you to import directly to a PF. One thing that does help the process to go faster, is to empty the contacts folder of the mailbox first and then use the option to allow it to create duplicates. Otherwise, it's going to compare every contact it imports against what is already there. As you get more and more contacts in the folder, it's going to go slower. If you tell it not to create duplicates, once it does the comparison, it then has to move the old one to the Deleted Items folder, which further slows down the process. -Original Message- From: Martin Blackstone [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, July 29, 2003 11:23 AM To: Exchange Discussions Subject: RE: Secondary Address Book Probably the easiest way would be to do it via the import/export tool in Outlook. -Original Message- From: mh exch [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, July 29, 2003 11:22 AM To: Exchange Discussions Subject: RE: Secondary Address Book Once I have created and set permissions on the PF how do I import the csv file into the PF ?? -Original Message- From: Martin Blackstone [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, July 29, 2003 12:11 PM To: Exchange Discussions Subject: RE: Secondary Address Book Sure -Original Message- From: mh exch [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, July 29, 2003 11:12 AM To: Exchange Discussions Subject: RE: Secondary Address Book So I would create a public folder with the name of the address book I want then import them into the public folder ? RE: Zombie ACL's
You have to find the mailbox and remove the permissions for Journal for this zombie user. I've had these a few times during our migration. When I see it in the log I first see if I can figure out which department that person used to work for and go and check the permissions of his former co-workers and that usually locates the offending mailbox. Usually takes less then 15 minutes to find. RE: Secondary Address Book
I was able to do the import and move the contacts to the public folder but only the account that created them is able to see them. I have given the permissions for default as reviewer and anonymous as none. So I guess in order to see the folders in the mail drop down list I need add some more permissions or will it take time to replicate to the users ?? MH -Original Message- From: Blunt, James H (Jim) [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, July 29, 2003 12:38 PM To: Exchange Discussions Subject: RE: Secondary Address Book Actually, your EASIEST option if it was Ex5.5, would be to export them out of Notes to a .csv file, massage the .csv file so that you have them all set as Custom Recipients, then import them all to the GAL of the Exchange Server via the Tools / Directory Import... Whether the process is the same in E2k, I can't say. Very high scores (obvious spam) can then be deleted, while medium scores can be flagged, sent to a Possible Spam folder, or whatever. -- Ben Scott [EMAIL PROTECTED] | The opinions expressed in this message are those of the author and do | | not represent the views or policy of any other person or organization. | | All information is provided without warranty of any kind. | _ List posting FAQ: http://www.swinc.com/resource/exch_faq.htm Web Interface: http://intm-dl.sparklist.com/cgi-bin/lyris.pl?enter=exchangetext_mode=lang=english To unsubscribe: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Exchange List admin:[EMAIL PROTECTED]
RE: Reccomended Black Lists
If you are using Sendmail as your message relay you could use greylisting. I have seen it work very well in a number of places...even large shops. http://projects.puremagic.com/greylisting/ -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Aaron Brasslett Sent: Tuesday, July 29, 2003 8:33 AM To: Exchange Discussions Subject: Reccomended Black Lists Hi all, I'm planning to install spam blocking software soon and I was wonder what mailhost black lists you all recommend. Notes vs. Exchange
I'm attempting to convince my management to migrate from Lotus Notes to Exchange. Mail capabilities aside, is there a good source out there for a point by point comparison of the collaborative features of both platforms? _ List posting FAQ: http://www.swinc.com/resource/exch_faq.htm Web Interface: http://intm-dl.sparklist.com/cgi-bin/lyris.pl?enter=exchangetext_mode=lang=english To unsubscribe: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Exchange List admin:[EMAIL PROTECTED]

RE: Notes vs. Exchange
Yes, that is in the plan, but I am seeking info for use in the preliminary conversations. I found some items on the Exchange site that make a good starting point, and would like to get some anecdotal material from those who have migrated from Notes to Exchange - including some of the potential drawbacks. I doubt that I would get that kind of objectivity from a sales person. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, July 29, 2003 10:13 PM To: Exchange Discussions Subject: Re: Notes vs. Exchange On Tue, 29 Jul 2003, at 8:37pm, [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I'm attempting to convince my management to migrate from Lotus Notes to Exchange.
