I can understand that. Ludington (MI) is a small town of 12000 and where I

to run into someone that works there no matter where you are.

And, by the way, yes, Ludington does have all the modern amenities, too!

When you use OWA, the user will be prompted for the password change. With
POP3, you probably will need to write your own code. I think this was
covered in the list a few months ago. There was someone who was trying to
do this for POP3 users, although I don't remember who posted it.

If I have users who use our systems strictly for Outlook Web Mail, or POP

have them notified that they should do so? Is there any way to send out an
email to them, leting them know their password will expire? Obviously these
users do not log onto the network directly, and would not see the 2000/NT

To all the Genii out there.your assistance would be truly appreciated.

I have a problem, experienced by a couple of users, that has so far defied
all attempts at resolution.

Running Exchange Server 5.5 SP4, incl. all hotfixes on Windows NT4 SP6a.
Antivirus:Trend Micro Scanmail for Exchange.

The problem is as follows: A couple of users are able to access mailbox and
work normally in all folders, except for Calendar and Outlook Today.

As soon as the user selects one of these options, utilization reaches 100%
and remains at this level. Even after 15-20 minutes, machine remains frozen
until Outlook is cancelled.

The following actions have so far been taken:

1. Attempted to load Outlook using a variety of startup parameters; however
problem remains.

2. Created new mailbox and exported contents of old mailbox to PST. Then
imported PST to new mailbox, first with contents of calendar and then
without the calendar. However each time calendar is accessed the same
problem occurs.

3. Have attempted to access the mailbox from other PCs and loaded different
versions of Outlook (97,98, 2000 and XP) however the problem remains.

This problem does not affect any other users or any newly created mailboxes.

As a temporary solution, both users are able to use Calendar under OWA.

Any suggestions, recommendationsplease.

Regards
Jonathan

Also related:

If you signed up for Hotmail - or anything else that uses Passport more
than a couple of months ago, you may be in for a big surprise. It seems that
Microsoft changed the rules while you weren't looking. Unilaterally,
Microsoft may have granted itself permission to pass along your personal
information to other companies that use
Passport on their Web sites.
The personal information includes your email address, your birthday, your
country and zip code, your gender and occupation.
Has Microsoft taken liberties with your data? There's an easy way to check.

Go into Hotmail and log into your account.
Click Options (to the right of the tab that says "Address Book").
Click Personal Profile (in the upper left corner). Scroll down to the bottom
of the screen and see whether the boxes marked "Share my e-mail address" and
"Share my other registration information" have been checked.
UNCHECK THESE!!

Those boxes didn't exist when most people currently signed up for Hotmail,
and chances are
pretty good they didn't exist when you signed up for it, either. I certainly
never gave Microsoft permission to hand out my email address - or my
birthday, gender or occupation. Yet both of those boxes on my personal
profile were
checked. I bet they're checked on your personal profile, too. Worth
checking!

All,
Our company is buying a new Exchange server. At the start running 5.5
hopefully migrating to E2K sooner rather than later. I was hoping that
someone may be able to help me decide whether or not to invest in 1MB or 2MB
L2 processor cache rather than buying the 512K L2 cache. This server over
the next 5 years may be supporting up to 1,000 users and if someone could
give me their opinions on whether 1MB or 2MB of cache will be needed or if
the performance gain will even be seen with a server supporting 1,000 users
I'd greatly appreciate it. I've been looking to buy a server with dual 1.8
Ghz/512K processors. I have priced other servers that are far more expensive
with 1MB or 2MB cache. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in

Hi, I'm trying to create a simple footnote to be added to each outgoing

like:

CONFIDENTIAL: This communication is intended for the use of the individual

How can I create such a form(template)? Also, how can I make so that "YOUR

RE: stupid disclaimers

2002-06-06 Thread Soysal, Serdar

This is BS. If you are dealing with confidential information, you treat it
as such. Unless encrypted, e-mail is transmitted over the Internet in clear
text. You don't mail confidential documents in transparent envelopes, do
you? If you can't risk the viewing of the information by unintended
recipients, you don't use simple e-mail to send it. There are specialized
products out there (like Tumbleweed's Redirector) that are designed to do
this sort of communication.

If you goof up, the disclaimer can't save you. If you send confidential
company information to a competitor by accident see how fast your company
fires you, even if you had a disclaimer.

http://www.emaildisclaimers.com/

"There are several reasons why you might decide to add disclaimers to your
e-mails. The reasons can be categorized into two groups: legal and marketing
reasons.

1. Legal reasons

If you were to be so unlucky to be sued for the contents of an e-mail, it is
not certain whether an email disclaimer will protect you from liability in a
court of law. However, it will certainly help your case and in some
situations might exempt you from liability. More importantly, it may well
prevent the actual occurrence of lawsuits against your company since the
mere presence of the statement might deter most persons from seeking legal
compensation from your company. Therefore the use of disclaimers is always
recommended. There are 6 legal threats that disclaimers can help protect
against:

Breach of confidentiality: By including a disclaimer that warns that the
content of the e-mail is confidential, you can protect your company against
the exposure of confidential information. If the receiver breaches this
confidentiality, they could be liable.

Accidental breach of confidentiality: If an employee were to receive a
confidential mail from someone and by accident forward it to the wrong
person, the employee, and therefore the company, could be liable. This can
easily happen. For instance a wrongly addressed e-mail can be forwarded to a
postmaster, who might not be authorized to read the mail. Furthermore,
e-mail can easily be intercepted. If you include a statement at the end of
your mail that the message is only intended for the addressee, and that if
anyone receives the e-mail by mistake they are bound to confidentiality,
this could protect you. etc. etc."

RE: Offline Defrag

2002-06-06 Thread Soysal, Serdar

An offline defrag is the last thing you want to do if you suspect your
database has corruption in it. If you suspect corruption, build another
server, move your data to that and then figure out what caused the
corruption in the first place. When you run a database utility against a db
that is potentially corrupted, the risk of not being able to mount your
stores is greatly increased.

RE: lesser of the evils - ssl or smtp

2002-06-06 Thread Soysal, Serdar

I think the options for mailbox access:

1.VPN (most secure)
2.SSL to internal OWA
3.SSL to OWA in DMZ (secure enough, but forces you to allow directory
authentication traffic through your firewall)
4.OWA in DMZ over port 80 (what are you, nuts?)
5.MAPI over Internet (suicidal)

For SMTP traffic, what I would recommend is to deploy a relay host in your
DMZ that also does SMTP virus scanning, preferrably from a different AV
vendor than the one running internally on Exchange so you have two different
engines scanning all incoming messages. Also configure your firewall so
that the Internet can only do port 25 to your DMZ relay host and only that
host can do port 25 to your internal host. Also add additional restrictions
to the firewall that nobody but your relay host can make a port 25 to the
Internet. Last thing you need is an internal bozo to stick an SMTP host in
your DMZ and start spamming the Internet without your knowledge.

First rule: Don't ever let internet traffic talk directly to the heart of
your network. Stick something in the DMZ, be it an SMTP relay or an OWA
box, but never let 'em talk directly to your Exchange box. The real
question behind determinig SMTP or OWA is (in my opinion) a question of
functionality -- they both do two toally different things. If you want
users to both send AND receive their email, you'll have to open POP3 in
addition to SMTP ... also allowing account passwords to transmit in plain
text. If you'd rather keep all the data sitting on the Exchange box, give
the users the additional calendaring, etc. functionality, and encrypt
authentication data -- but at the cost of not allowing users to work offline
-- then OWA is the way to go.
I recommend defining the needs, then making the decision based on that.

RE: Outlook appointments on Exchange

2002-06-05 Thread Soysal, Serdar

The reasons why I don't do it are:

1. It's unnecessary.
2. I have a life.
3. Unnecessary downtime is frowned upon in a 24x7 shop.
4. I don't need to justify my existence by doing useless administrative
work.

It's like disassembling your car's axles and clean your shocks every weekend

We're having a severe problem with a few mailboxes on our Exchange 5.5
server, even though we maintain a rigorous maintenance schedule on our
stores. A few users (all running Outlook 2000 SR-1) can no longer respond
to any appointment invitations -- doing so causes outlook.exe to fail with a
Dr. Watson access violation error. Running /cleanfreebusy does not cause
Outlook to hang (as happens when some calendar corruption occurs), but it
doesn't solve the problem, either. This problem follows the user to other
workstations as well -- it's definitely tied to the mailbox, not the client.
Exmerge can successfully pull down the contents of the mailbox, but I'd
rather not use that to recreate the mailbox because it will break all the
existing appointment links. TechNet and newsgroup scans have provided zero
solutions ... any ideas, anyone?

Thanks,
Jon

Makes for faster access times than a raid 5 array + hot spare as the data is

What was the user doing prior to this problem?

It is possible that the Office keys in the registry is whacked on that PC.
Suggest a reburn. If you don't want to reburn, you may try uninstalling

Hello,

One of our users is experiencing a problem with his appointments in Outlook.
When he creates a new appointment, or opens an existing one (already passed
or still to come) no fields are displayed to enter or choose a location or
to select an online meeting service, they are disappeared.

It seems to be machine dependend because the problem doesn't occur if the
user uses another machine, and the problem still occur if other users use
his computer. Office 2000 has been re-installed but didn' solve the problem.

I searched Technet and related sources on the internet but am still unable
to find a solution. (I posted this problem with a screenshot but the message
was rejected).

Did someone see (or just didn't) this before ?

Environment: Windows NT4 SP6 / Outlook 2000 (CW) / Exchange Server 5.5.

RE: Trying to keep Exchange (et al) in our org

2002-05-31 Thread Soysal, Serdar

If the money that they'll be saving in licensing costs is more than the sum
of the costs of:

1. Purchasing/licensing new software
2. Purchasing support for the new software
3. Purchasing/upgrading/changing hardware (if necessary)
4. Training/Replacing the entire IT staff
5. Training all of the users
6. Lost productivity during the period the users go through the learning
curve

Then it is a sound business decision. It is quite possible that this new IT
director has NOT considered all of the above. You need to do the following:

1. Cancel this IT Director's subscription to PC Magazine
2. Try to beat some sense into him
3. Try to keep him away from Vodka (which can be challenging in the good old
Suomi)

The only alternative is to do what Missy has so wisely suggested.

several years now). We have 13 plants located in various countries around
the world. Our corporate HQ (located in Finland) has hired a new IS
director who has given us a directive that, in lieu of the anticipated
AD/Win2K/E2K rollout, we will be changing our backend infrastructure to
novell e-directory/lotus notes/linux servers!

Now, I am as open-minded as the next guy about the prospect of padding my
resume with all sorts of new applications, but that seems a bit drastic.
Apparently, it all comes down to money.

Besides, I love my E55sp4 server; it NEVER gives me any problems.

Has anyone else experienced this? Which would be more painful short-term?
long-term?: the AD/Win2K/E2K or Novell/Lotus/Linux? I get the impression
that this is a knee-jerk reaction to Microsoft licensing costs.

Any thoughts, experiences, or warnings concerning this migration would be
appreciated.

Sincerely,
Joseph Smith

Windows 2000 Server
Exchange 5.5 Sp3

Our headquaters recently performed a swing upgrade to Windows 2000 with
Active Directory. Everything appeared to be running Ok until this morning
when the Exchange server rebooted due to a power outage. Now the IMC will
not start and logs the following error.

Event Type: Error
Event Source: MSExchangeIMC
Event Category: Initialization/Termination
Event ID: 4057
Date: 5/31/2002
Time: 12:10:21 PM
User: N/A
Computer: ATREXCHNG
Description:
Unable to resolve the delivery route atrdom;atrcorp;1. Since errors in
delivery routing parameters can result in misrouted mail, the Internet Mail

Service will not start until this error is corrected. Confirm that DNS is
properly configured. If you are using a HOSTS file, confirm that it is
properly configured.

Transfer Mode: Inbound & Outbound
Message Delivery: Forward all messages to host
Routing: Set to reroute inbound SMTP. Has an entry to route the local
domain inbound.

Has anyone dealt with this problem before? Anything you've got that can
help me point him in the right direction would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Nope, that's not it. It would go without the brackets as well. His problem
is he needs to change the relay settings in IMS to allow relaying.

Ed, be careful not to make yourself an open relay if this host is
communicating directly to the Internet.

I am using Exchange Server 5.5
I am using an application that establishes an SMTP connection to my SMTP
server and sends an SMTP message to the outside world. The problem is the
message will not be delivered. It appears that the SMTP server will not see
the recipient in its local site and then bounce the message back
undeliverable. Of course the recipient isn't in the local site because it is
an outside email address.

Example of what I am doing.

Telnet mail.stainsafe.com 25

Mail from:<[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

Rcpt to:[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Data

Subject: test message

This comes back undeliverable almost immediately. It appears to me that the
SMTP server is not trying to send the message out, it is looking for the
recipient locally and then rejecting it because the recipient doesn't exist.
How can I have the SMTP server send the message to the MX server of
notmydomain.com? If I am confusing you all I apologize. Thanks for the help.

Subject: kinda OT - RAID on the exchange server

I apologise for the OT question...

Has anyone experienced issues with bad striping on a RAID5e disk array?
(hardware RAID)

I have had this twice in the last 6 months. When a disk dies in the array it
is replaced ASAP. RAID5e should be able to handle this without error right?

When the RAID5e striping has errors, it registers sectors on the logical
disk as bad and causes disk I/O errors - which screws (eventually corrupts)
the exchange information store(s) on the logical drive and prevents backups
from completing.

hhhmmm ... perhaps someone can enlighten me as to why RAID5e couldn't handle
the occassional defunct drive without screwing the rest of the array in the
process of rebuilding itself...

The hardware vendor has recommended re-creating the RAID array from scratch
and restoring from backup

Any thoughts?

sorry again for the OT question - but I'll even throw in a Friday afternoon
Haiku for good measure:

Friday afternoon

Thanks,

RE: Exchange 2000 Fax connectors/solutions comparison

We evaluated Omtool, Rightfax and a bunch of others. Rightfax seemed to be
the winner at the time. However, for reasons that I do not wish to (or need
to) disclose the budget was cut and we're stuck with FACSys. The bottom
line is pretty much anything you get will be better than FACSys.

If you go to the website for each fax solution. Their comparison always
comes out on top. Gee wonder why. Better to find out which best fits your
goals and needs. I have used both Rightfax and Omtool. Both performed well.
But after all your research you do, your boss will go with the cheapest and
rely on you to make it stable.

browser either, I've had them try to use IE when logged in. I just wanted
to ask prior to setting up a test AOL box, oh the horror. Is there anything
that can be done to make OWA more friendly to AOL users, or does anyone know
of an AOL config change that has to be done? Thank you in advance, Jer

Does anyone know of a 3rd party utility that can calculate the mailboxes
that are not currently being used. Since we are using Trend Micro's
Scanmail, we cannot depend on using the last time a user logs onto his/her
mailbox, since Scanmail does so on a regular basis. Any help would be
appreciated.

The hardware can be different. You just need the same O/S and Exchange
level (version, sp etc). The only thing that might go wrong in your case is
that the previous system had a multiprocessor HAL, and the new one will be
single proc HAL.

Obviously, you'll need the same server name, site name etc. etc.

to get complicated. Can anyone tell me if there is a difference between
deactivating the original server, adding the new one to the proper security
group memberships to do a setup.exe /disasterrecovery and then restoring the
DBs, rather than doing a system state restore on the new machine off the
network, dropping the old machine, bringing the new one up on the network
and doing the setup /disasterrecovery? An ms whitepaper recomended the
latter, while an ms tech recommended the former. It seems to me it'd be
easier to leave the computer accounts and group membership the same...

RE: Virus/Spam filtering

2002-05-21 Thread Soysal, Serdar

The original question (that was violently snipped) asked about both content
and virus scanning (hence the subject line "Virus/Spam filtering"). It is
true that TrendMicro is very good on the virus scanning side, its eManager
plug-in is just a mediocre content filter. For virus scanning, Sybari's
Antigen is just as good. You can't go wrong with either product. I believe
Antigen has content filtering now as well, but I haven't tested it yet.

For content filtering all of the three below are decent:
- MIMESweeper: they are the leader in this field. Very strong product.
- Praetor: good/cheaper alternative to MIMESweeper. The next version will
be based on Transport Event Sinks which they claim gives them a big
performance boost. The downside is it will require Win2K
- MMS from Tumbleweed Communications: they are MIMESweeper's top competitor
and this is the only product that has a comparable feature set AFAIK.
However, their support is pretty much non-existent

Just curious, anyone know of any whitepapers/documents/articles/etc
recommending message size limits? We're running with 5M across the board
(IMS/MTA/mailbox) on our 5.5 system until we make the move to E2K (God, I
hope soon!) and have the advantage of more management of large messages
(scheduling, etc). Been there, done that with the Notes from the Field
books and all - apparently MS "recommendations" or offered guidance isn't
good enough for TPTB. ;-)

Thanks all, time to go see Ep II for me :)

Good morning to you all:

I've recently had a rash of IMC failures on two different boxes.
Both are Exchange 5.5 SP4, on NT 4.0 boxes running SP6a. One server is
running Nemex, and the other is an internal IMC so it has no virus scanning
capability.

The lock ups happen at different times and seem to effect only the
Internet Mail Connector. When we try to shut down the service, NT pops up a
message saying that the service can't be controlled in it's present state;
however, the box will shut down normally and reboot.

Any advice will be appreciated.

All,

I have a few admin assistants that are using a public folder calendar to
book conference rooms. We are having problems with recurring meetings
dropping off the calendar. All the admins have "Author" rights. So
obviously they can only delete their own items. None of them are saying
that they are deleted any of these meetings. I'm sure all Network admins
have heard that before. But if they are right. How can I resolve this

Try UUENCODE. You can set that in Message Options. If that works you can
set the same thing on the server for that domain.

Using exchange server 5.5 and outlook 2000 at work. Need to start using my
mobil messaging on my US Cellular phone. When I send anything from work I
can see who it is from but when I try to read it I am told that the message
is in MIME format and cannot be read. In my outlook settings I have it set
to send in all 3 options (plain text, MS outlook rich text,
HTML) and this fixes nothing. I can get messages is I send them from my
mediacom account as well as from hotmail. What am I missing on the exchange
server? Please let me know if you have any ideas at all. Thanks.

This product doesn't make much sense to me. It trades management and backup
of one database (Exchange) to management and backup of 3 databases
(Exchange, the SQL "file pointer" database, and the Max Attach filesystem).
More points of failure without much more capability.

If you have problems with exchange DBs getting too big, I think there are
better, cheaper, more manageable solutions (Mailbox manager, adding more
servers or storage, even ExMerge) available.

Chris you cannto rename the BDC.. the best way I would suggest is to disable
the network and have everything as the production environment and to connect
to the network with the same name and all that in case of a failure.

Any ideas about what can be the problem?

In our Exchange 5.5 setup, we occassionaly get NDR's when users try to send
emails to users with in the office. This mostly happens when they try to
send it to Distribution lists. The users get a NDR mail similar to this

"Unable to deliver the message due to a communication failure The MTS-ID of
the original message is "

Sometimes they get like this

"The message was undelivered because the specified recipient postal address
was incorrect. MSEXCH:MSExchnageIS ..."

Any advise is highly appreciated

similar to roigin in config but not Spec, ie different manufacturers.
Installed NT 4 sp6 and made it BDC. Connected the BDC to live network to

RE: Conference Board Calendar

You probably have a corrupt calendar entry in there. Set up a profile for
this conference room, open the PST, switch to By Category or By Recurrence
view and copy only the NON-RECURRING meetings back into the original
calendar. Then you can start looking for the culprit recurring meeting [1].
Look for meetings with lots of exceptions or blank subject lines or that
have a conflict icon next to it.

Hello everyone,
We are currently running exchange 5.5 SP4. Recently all of
our users including the exchange admin account are unable to open the
conference room's calendar to view who has booked the room. Everyone can
request the conference room and only the receptionist is able to view the
conference room's calendar to accept and reject the requests. Even she can
only do it for one day that is just for today. If she tries to look it up
for tomorrow or next week, then it just hangs, and I see that it tries to
Synchronize for hours. This issue just started recently as far as I know.
What can I do to resolve this issue? Please help. I even tried to recreate
the mail box and it doesn't work. Meaning, even after I created a .pst file
and put the data back into the new mail box that I created, it still does
the same thing..it just freezes up if you try to look up the information for
more than one day. Any way to clean this up or resolve this issue.
Thanks everyone.

What happened prior to this problem starting? Any service pack upgrades
etc? Take a look at Q185573 to see if it rings a bell.

Either you have a corrupt db and it was backed up that way, or there is
something messed up with the machine you're restoring to. Either way, you
may want to call PSS now.

Subject: URGENT DISASTER RECOVERY

We recently had an issue where we had to rebuild exchange 5.5 and restore
mailbox's etc back into it. We suffered considerable downtime which has now
possed the question of disaster recovery.

We have a domain with a pdc and bdc (NT4 server) and have created a bdc off
site which is part of the domain and is synchronising remotely. I need to
come up with a good disaster recover for the exchange server.

We are using veritas backup which is backing up private store, public store
and one other folder. Could someone suggest the best way of handling this.
The exchange server cannot be taken offline. I have looked at exmerge but am
not sure if this would copy permissions etc if the edb's are in use.

Is there a way of creating a second exchange 5.5 remotely and mirroring the
accounts of the original exchange. (Exact copy - but the backup exchange
server does not function unless the other one goes down.)

Please help - I am in grave danger.
Thanks
Mike

Thanks
Mike

I'm looking for a way to prevent users from creating new folders under their
Exchange 2000 mailbox on my server. We'll be providing training that
'directs' them not to, but I want to keep them from doing it anyway. Which,
of course, they will try to do. Is there a way to prevent the creation of
new folders in addition to the default mailbox folders in Exchange 2000?

RE: Telnet troubleshooting

2002-05-13 Thread Soysal, Serdar

When your server makes a connection, it sends the entire command and
carriage return (that is HELO) in a single packet. When you make a
connection via Telnet and start keying in the command, the other server
receives each keystroke in a different packet.

It seems like the receiving server assumes that all commands must be
contained within a single packet. I don't know if that's how Merak server
is supposed to work or if they put some kind of restriction in there for a
false sense of security.

original issue I was checking was that geostarcorp is claiming
privateconsulting.com's mail server was rejecting some of their messages.

I do not want to do this on a per person basis..it took a long time to

RE: Spam Filter Suggestions

2002-05-13 Thread Soysal, Serdar

If you're thinking about deploying content filtering software you must have
one of the following:

1. 1-2 hours a day of free time
2. Enough budget to hire a part-time employee

The content filtering product is only as good as how much time you spend
refining your rules. Very boring and shtty job. If you do end up deploying
it, delegate the maintenance of filters to someone you don't like.

RE: Forests prep domain prep

2002-05-09 Thread Soysal, Serdar

If you don't run them prior to the Exchange setup, they do run automatically
in the background. That's probably why your Exchange install took such a
long time. In larger forests where you have multiple domains/trees, it is a
better idea to run forestprep and wait a while until schema changes are
replicated to all DCs and then run domainprep and Exchange server setup.

This is a silly thing, a user would like their reminders in the form of a
email rather then a reminder popup on a paticular appointment. The
appointment contains other people and also some people need to attend that
don't have calendar(pop clients).

Is it possible to automate a reminder email for an appointment and specify
who that goes out too beyond the people who have it scheduled?

other capabilities of the hardware/software. They are nearly as bad as the
paper MSCE because the scope of their knowledge is so very limited and
because of their experience think the only way to run a network is the way
they did it at their last job. At least the Paper boyz know they are
limited, are willing to learn, cost half as much and don't cause half the
drama the "experience" guy does. They piss me off so much more, that and
they usually have no idea as to WHY their last network was set up that way
but that it is just the best way. Experience is NOT always the best
qualifier either

RE: Cerification question

2002-05-01 Thread Soysal, Serdar

Certs are not a sign of competency. They just mean that the person is
capable of memorizing braindumps. I interviewed MCSEs that answered the
question "Explain your NT domain structure in your previous job" with an
answer like "We had ATM coming to the back of our PCs". You've got to be
careful with MCSEs that come with huge resumes. There are some ways you can
tell if they're good or not though. For example if the candidate writes
MCSE with a larger font than his own name, you probably have a clueless
wall-licker in your hands.

If a person doesn't have certification, it means that he/she has not sat
through the tests. That person can be the most knowledgeable guy out there.

That guy is a knucklehead. The "Best Cert" is the one you need or help you
do your job better. That is the best cert. I have a CCNP and CCDP and I
really do not work in that industry. I really am an admin working with M$,
Cisco, Citrix, Unix etc I studied the Cisco stuff because we were
converting from x.25 to frame relay and I wanted to do it so I asked the
company to give me a shot. I used the knowledge again when we switched to
NVPN. My only point is that the Certs were about what I needed to improve my
skill set.

I had to hire a guy recently (echoing Lori and Ray) and I hired the guy that
had very little Practical experience but he did have an MCSE. I thought that
at least showed that he wanted to learn. I interviewed a few others that had
more experience and never took the time to educate themselves in their
chosen craft.

Read what you wrote carefully. You are talking about impacting all of YOUR
users to eliminate the effects of another company being infected with a
virus. What will happen when the next KLEZ-like virus comes out and starts
spoofing the new email ids?

The only thing you can do is to inform your users about the effects of this
KLEZ virus so they won't be surprised when they receive an email like "Why
you send me virus?". In addition to that, you can contact your company's
business partners who have your users in their address books and suggest
that they stop hiring unskilled monkeys to run their IT department.

RE: NT Account Lockout using OWA for Exchange 5.5

2002-04-29 Thread Soysal, Serdar

When you login to OWA, you essentially log on to the domain you supplied and
the logon occurs on the OWA server. The same domain policies apply, you do
lock your password after unsuccessful attempts. In your environment maybe
the logon does not occur at all. Something may be failing before a logon to
the domain actually takes place. Can the user account you tested with
actually logon properly with the correct password?

Subject: NT Account Lockout using OWA for Exchange 5.5

Good afternoon all:

My boss as posed a good question to me and I have not been able to
find the answer.

The situation is this:

We have OWA up for our users under Exchange 5.5. Using IE,
the OWA browser interface will kick you out after three failed attempts to
provide a proper userid/password combination. When kicked out multiple times
using the same userid, the id is not locked in the domain. A security policy
states that failed login attempts in excess of x attempts in y minutes will
lock the account, but through OWA this does not seem to be happening.

The question is this, given enough time, will a cracker be
able to bruteforce the login through OWA without locking out the NT account
in the domain.

Thanks for any help in this.

RE: scheduling automatic rebooting of server

2002-04-25 Thread Soysal, Serdar

In this organization every network problem is first reported as an "Exchange
Issue". It's probably due to the fact that Outlook is the only network
application that EVERY client uses and it is usually the very first network
application that they open. That's probably the reason why the network
problems are reported as exchange issues. Well, that and an untrainable
mass of helpdeskians.

"Awaiting Directory Lookup" this would indicate that you have dsaccess
problems, which would also start to explain the OWA logon issues.

So, IMHO, I think you should look at the communication between your exchange
servers and your DC\GC servers.

As far as I can see, nothing is wrong. The server ran fine for months
without any restarts or reboots before SP2.

We went with SP2 because of better OWA features and better SMTP queue
management. Before SP2 we used to get messages stuck in the "Awaiting
Directory Lookup" queue and there was no way to get rid of them. Those pesky
messages eventually ate all the memory. We had to stop the SMTP virtual
server and create a new SMTP virtual server. After SP2, we can simply remove
those messages from this queue.

But a few days after installing SP2, we ran into the OWA problem: When OWA
gives up, there are no warnings or errors in the event log, CPU or memory
utilization do not change. Everything looks the same, but OWA does not like
people's passwords anymore. Although this could have something to do with
Kerberos tickets expiring (or not expiring) on time...
