Ooops. Looks like I pushed a few more of Barry's buttons.
It makes him absolutely crazy that I'm actually a fairly nice-looking dame

Here's a followup, for Curtis and Willytex, of Bo playing later in life. I
looked up his age, and it turns out that he was probably in his 70s when I saw
him perform in New Mexico, although he claimed onstage to be in his 80s. Still,
he never stopped rockin'...

When I lived in Santa Fe,  I used to see Bo Diddley all the time. He lived in a
suburb of nearby Albuquerque, where he had once actually been Honorary Sheriff
(Bo Diddley's A Gunslinger) and would play gigs at local clubs and casinos from
time to time. He was in his 80s, and still put on one of the best stage shows
I've ever seen. He was a FIERCE guitarist, still able to play up a storm, and
in pretty much any style you can imagine.

One of the best things about watching Bo perform was him interacting with each
new
band. That's right...he didn't have a band. What he'd do when someone hired
him for a gig is call around that town and find out the name of the best young
garage band in town. Then he'd call them up and say, "Hey, it's Bo Diddley. No,
really. I've got a gig in your town on Saturday. Want to be my backup band?"

He'd meet with them before the gig, expecting them to have learned his songs,
and they'd jam for an hour or two just to make sure it was a good fit, and then
they'd go onstage together. It was magic. You could tell that these kids were
having the time of their lives playing behind one of the true legends of rock
'n roll, and you could tell that Bo was having fun, too.

Onstage he was funny, he was charming, and for an 80+ year-old-man he was
damned sexy, too. A true legend, and to the end.

Excellent post.

I just started studying him seriously this year when I was getting into
Afro-carribian rhythms. I got his Chess recordings box set and dug in. Rhythm
king.

Now I include one of his songs in my sets and just lean on the rhythm using the
guitar as a percussion instrument. Every verse is more hypnotic it is so much
fun to sing.

Who Do You Love

I walk 47 miles of barbed wire,
I use a cobra-snake for a necktie,
I got a brand new house on the roadside,
Made from rattlesnake hide,
I got a brand new chimney made
 on top,
Made out of a human skull,
Now come on take a walk with me, arlene,
And tell me, who do you love?

Who do you love?
Who do you love?
Who do you love?
Who do you love?

Tombstone hand and a graveyard mine,
Just 22 and I don't mind dying.

Who do you love?
Who do you love?
Who do you love?
Who do you love?

I rode around the town, use a
 rattlesnake whip,
Take it easy arlene, don't give me no lip,

Who do you love?
Who do you love?
Who do you love?
Who do you love?

Night was dark, but the sky was blue,
Down the alley, the ice-wagon flew,
Heard a bump, and somebody screamed,
You should have heard just what I seen.

Who do you love?
Who do you love?
Who do you love?
Who do you love?

Arlene took me by my hand,
And she said oh bo, you know I understand.

 Yea, and
Kraft caramels for dessert - the chocolate and the regular
version. Never did like cheese though. I remember having a
Velveeta poster next to my bed when we lived in Germany -
must've been grade 4. And those mini Kraft marshmallows
too. In Canada the mac and cheese is so popular any generic
macaroni and cheese is referred to as "Kraft
Dinner". That cracks me up every time I hear it.
Fortunately, my mother was an amazing cook so no Kraft
Dinner for us. I did eat those caramels once in a while
 though.

Yea, and Kraft caramels for dessert - the chocolate and the regular version.
Never did like cheese though. I remember having a Velveeta poster next to my
bed when we lived in Germany - must've been grade 4. And those mini Kraft
marshmallows too. In Canada the mac and cheese is so popular any generic
macaroni and cheese is referred to as "Kraft Dinner". That cracks me up every
time I hear it. Fortunately, my mother was an amazing cook so no Kraft Dinner
for us. I did eat those caramels once in a while though.

2014-04-24 Thread Michael Jackson
You are still an idiot with a obivously TM Nazi mentality. Geoff Gilpin wrote a
book about the TM Movement a long time ago called the Maharishi Effect. I've
never read it. The OTHER man, Joseph Weber wrote the new book and interviewed
me - thus far I have not seen my name in it. He interviewed me late in the
process of his writing the book, but Buck in the Dome is mentioned prominently.
Since you and he are so chummy about the faker Marshy and that crop circle
baloney I would think you would like to see what Mr. Weber wrote about Bucky.
But you juust can't take a chance that an objective observer who has no axe
to grind against the TMO might find some things about them that are unsavory. I
know that mentality - "if you ain't for us, yore agin us" - another goose
stepping mental aberration of TM fanatics.

The Grateful Dead produced twenty-two vinyl albums from 1965 - 1995 with
maybe a hundred tape recordings. They had one hit record played on MTV in
1987, the only song to reach the Top 40: "Touch of Grey" (Garcia, Hunter) –
5:47 min.

And, some of that research is being verified by research in Buddhist
meditation. According to B. Alan Wallace, Samatha is "calm abiding," a
type of meditation designed to enhance sustained voluntary attention; a
subset of the broader family of samadhi meditation practices.

Reginald Ray at the Shambhala Mountain Cente says Samatha is
single-pointed focus of mind; a "limb" of Raja yoga - dharana. So, it's
just like TM in a way: meditation on objects.

Elizabeth Blackburn, a participant in the Shamatha Project meditation
research, the most detailed look into deep meditation ever conducted has
received the Nobel prize for medicine, along with two other colleagues
for her research on telomeres.

Bob Weir lives in this town. From what I've heard up on the bluff
overlooking the Strait. And according to a contractor who built some of
the houses around here I have a rock star living in one of the big
houses behind me in this block. It may be the one I keep running into
at the nearby supermarket.

Jerry Garcia grew up about 50 miles from where I did. Too bad I didn't
know that back in the 1960s when he came over to our band house once.
He undoubtedly knew the small town that I was from which would have
really weirded people out. ;-)

Yes, that is interesting. That result isn't unexpected to me though!

I wonder if the TMO had come up with the main excuse for problems in
long-termer's by then or if they were just keeping quiet about it?

And that is: You are still unstressing because you are acting as a washing
machine for the environment and clearing stress out of society.

Or even: You are releasing stress from a previous life! I heard that a few
times.

Shame the researchers hadn't heard of those, might have raised an eyebrow or
two.

I can answer why people stick at it when it's unpleasant though. It's the
promise of the goal of enlightenment. That outweighs a lot of misery. Maybe
coupled with group support and thus reinforcement of beliefs - confirmation
that you are doing well. Even seeing heavy unstressing as a badge of pride. I
did. Something good is happening!

I wonder if there has ever been an independent study of people who quit and
found out why. Any ideas Lawson?

My new social networking site is up and running. You've heard of My

of your face and subscribers can post comments about your face. I will
probably be a millionaire in a few years.

Well, the people who complained obviously thought it was critical, while you,

assumption to assume that it was critical in the eyes of the people who were

Thanks Geoff, a lot of interesting stuff there. Shall have a good read at my

 I like this;

The saddest stories come from people who gave their young lives to Maharishi
but were forced to leave the fold. Some disagreed with TM movement policy and
dared to speak out in public. Others were excommunicated for showing interest
in other forms of spirituality. Is this really how enlightenment works?

No. Nobody ever got enlightened by being a yes-man too terrified to have an
opinion. It's how cults work though.

I have heard the same complaint and in fact in the beginning of the book, Mr.
Weber says he was taken to task by the meditators for not doing TM as he did
his research - but for my money, he did the right thing to remain objective - I
haven't finished reading it, but so far its excellent.

In Chicago, all the criminals carry concealed weapons. If they saw an
armed citizen, would that be a deterrent to a possible crime? If I were
a criminal intent on robbing a bank and I saw a row of armed men and
women in the teller line, I'd certainly think twice before shooting the

(Note that he's so freaked out that he says the same things twice...)

I've gotten more mileage from Barry out of that "Barry's Fantasy Image of

It's haunted his dreams ever since.
