I think you're right.  What's unusual about the Prius (and this may
be the case for all hybrids) is that the city/highway rating is
better for the city driving than highway driving...it is pretty much
without exception the other way around for all non-hybrids...

Far fewer of those at the moment, but Democrats aren't in right now

I got the URL for the second one wrong. It's:

http://tpmmuckraker.com/

Marshall raised a bunch of money from donations and hired some
journalists to do independent investigative reporting which they then
publish on the muckraker site. Also check out the names and quality
of folk who write commentary and columns for the TPM Cafe website.
It's a who's who list as impressive as anyone writing opnions for the
WSJ editorial page.

http://www.tpmcafe.com/

BTW, other news organizations have been documented to use
http://tpmmuckraker.com/ without attribution. CNN was running a
TV/web news story for a while that used a photo with the muckraker
watermark logo still on it. They had a big laugh about that.

He owns a restaurant and collects oil from one other. He makes soap
from what's left over after making the biodiesel. Its pure soap with
no addatives. He reuses fryer vegatable oil, it burns cleaner than
regular diesel - exhaust smells litely of donuts :-)

Let me add my recommendation to Lawson's.  It's one
of the very best of the political blogs, impeccably

go.  The Daily Muck is also very good (news of political

I currently share a Toyota Celica with a friend of
mine named Sophie. I helped her buy the car last
year, and now that I'm in the same neighborhood,
we share the car so that I don't have to buy one
of my own until I really, really need it.

The thing is, this ridesharing experiment has shown
me that I may not *ever* really, really need my own
car. I get to use this one whenever I want, and
share the expenses with someone else. The Toyota
itself was what we call in France a Screamin' Deal,
the quintessenital Comfortable Reliable Car selling
for around 1500 Euros.

I ask you: why would anyone *ever* pay more than
that for an automobile?

:-)

According to a piece I read recently, the Prius makes
economic sense for the individual only if most of
his/her driving is done in city traffic.  On the freeway,
as you say, it's not that much better than a standard
car.

I don't have a Prius...I think you forgot the details of the
discussion I one had about the Prius: I wanted to buy one but the
salesman talked me out of it and I ended up with a Corolla, which I
am very happy with (I subsequently went out and traded it in for a
new Corolla once I had 40,000 miles on the first one).

Co-incidentally, I just went to the dealership last week for an
unrelated matter and was shocked to discover the sticker price of
the one Prius they had on the lot to be $28,000  Well, even
assuming that the gas mileage is as-rated (and there is some doubt
to that!) the economics of going from an comparable sized non-hybrid
to the Prius simply doesn't justify the added cost to the sticker
price...and I noticed that despite having dozens of Corollas on the
lot, there was only the one Prius.  Certainly, that may be a
function of large demand but, hey, I don't think that Toyota is
pushing 'em out.

As for the gas mileage, I've talked to two people I know who have
Prius' and they both say that they get about 40 miles to the gallon
and not the the much higher-rated mileages.  I get, consistently, 31
miles to the gallon with my Corolla.  So although I love the concept
of the Prius there is no way I'd pay an extra $5,000 for a Prius if
all I'm going to get is 30% more better gas mileage: I'm spending
about $1,000 a year on gas and I would save only about $220.00 if I
had a Prius...so how does spending an extra $5,000 to save $220.00
make sense?  I'd have to have the Prius for about 20 years to break
even...

Republicans complained about this for years through out the

conservatives because it was so common to see through out the media any

It's even worse than that.  From a Time magazine piece
on the Ryan *conviction* (not just charge!), the very
first sentence:

"On Monday, former Governor George Ryan, 72, became the third of the
state's last six governors to be convicted of political misdeeds, and
the current administration of DEMOCRAT Rod Blagojevich is also being
investigated." [emphasis added]

Nowhere in the piece does it mention Ryan's affiliation.

Josh Marshall of blog Talking Points Memo says this
wins Time the "Ryan-Republican 'party affiliation that
dare not speak its name' award."

I noticed something curious recently though, that I was evaluating
regarding the favoritism of the press towards the party in power. It
was widely reported recently that the former Gov of Illinois, Ryan,
has been charged with blatant corruption, but I couldn't find his
party affiliation listed in any of the articles. Sure enough when I
looked it up, he is a Republican. I am reasonably sure that had he
been a Democrat, that fact would've been noted in the news.

But it's going to happen, MDixon. Your Bush better be very careful, or he'll end
up like Mussolini. The truth is coming out about him now, and it can't be
stopped. Even you will have to take notice of it soon.

Actually, the mainstream media have mostly supported
Bush until recently when his polls began dropping.  Now
at least some of them are jumping on that bandwagon to
be in line with the majority of their readers.

With Bush, we don't need to look for such a legacy; we
don't have to plot extensively to maneuver him into an
entrapment situation where he'll lie under oath to
protect his family.

It's not a matter of *finding* a disagraceful legacy
for Bush.  It's right out there in the open for all to
see.  The really difficult thing is to ignore it.

Yes , and since Clinton got his label of being only the second
President impeached in history you know the opposition is hell bent of finding

2006-04-18 Thread shempmcgurk
I'm 51 years old.

Ever since I've been reading newspapers and following current events
(perhaps from about age 16?) there has been someone who has said
that about whomever was the current president.

So now they're saying it about Bush. I mean, hey, how many times
did I see that written about Clinton? Or Reagan? Or -- even
today! -- about Jimmy Carter?

Yawn.
