Most pet psychics call themselves animal communicators and most do not need
to be near the animal when they are talking with him/her. Check out the
internet/ Penelope Smith's list/ Kate Bast's list/ Carol Gurney's list.
There are a tremendous number when you start looking. You might check the
Louisville KY area too. I know one in Simpsonville (just outside

I'm in a Milwaukee, WI suburb & one of the vets we go to charges
115 for a senior wellness profile, 24 for the exam, 14 for a fecal, 50 for
an X-ray, 32 for a snap test, 10 for ear cleaning, 14 for distemper vac.
The cat-only clinic we go to is comparable in its rates, higher on some items,
lower on others.  I don't know what they currently charge for spay/neuter,
b/c it's been 5 years since I've had to have that done.  If I remember
correctly, dentals at the cat only clinic are usually b/t 100-200, depending on
if extractions were needed, etc.

RE: Tsunade has leukemia and I have questions

2006-10-10 Thread Diane Rosenfeldt
Hi, Chelsea --

Sorry Tsunade tested positive. FeLV is transmittable to other felines, but
is not as contagious as once thought. I'm fairly new on this list myself,
but many here have mixed their negative and positive cats for years with no
transmission of the disease. You won't pass this on to the other animals
you wish to handle. Basically, Tsunade would have to bite each and every
one, and as far as I know, FeLV is limited to cats -- and I'm not even sure
about the exotics. As a precaution, you would avoid feeding them out of her
food dishes and not let them hang out in her litter box, but then those
things aren't likely to happen in any case. Your boyfriend's cat should be
okay as long as it is vaccinated for FeLV. Feed Tsunade good quality
food -- others on the list will tell you which ones -- try to keep her
stress levels down and be really vigilant about sniffles, sneezes, any sign
of illness, and get her to a vet for it. FeLV cats are really susceptible
to upper respiratory disease and eye things. Oh, and don't let a vet
suggest you put her to sleep just because she's FeLV. She probably won't
live as long as if she were well, but she can live many, many years. Good
luck!

I envy your work (and future work) with all those exciting animals!

Tsunade has leukemia and I have questions

2006-10-10 Thread Chelsea Bennett

Hi, My name is Chelsea. In late July a kitten (seemed to be) wandered
into my yard. After thinking she may go home, putting up posts of found
cat, and checking newspapers for lost cat notices, I found she had been
seen at the nearby church and figured she was dumped there. After trying
to find a home fer her, I soon fell in love with this sweet kitty and was
wanting a cat since my oldest cat Oliver had passed in Feb due to kidney
problems (he was about 15). So today Tsunade went to the vet to get her
shots, tests, and get fixed. I was correct she was a girl and in heat,
she had no microchip, was about 8 months - 1.5 years old, and the test
was a strong possitive for felkine leukemia. I decided to keep her as
long as I can. I plan to move in with my boyfriend next year, and he has
a cat of 15 years with kidney problems. Both these cats would be inside
only cats. If his cat gets vaccinated against leukemia, he will probably
be safe from the dieases, correct??? also Tsunade had diahrrea as of
last night (not seen previoulsy) and she has always vomitted more than
normal. The vomit is usually spit, hairs, maybe some grass (she is
inside cat as of now-but will go outside on leash walks) but sometimes
it is a bunch of undigested food chunks. So I plan to get lacatone
furball medicine and digest a meal ASAP, but are there other medicines
she should be on??? Does anyone know a good cheap source for buying this
digest a meal by infinity? Tsunade's gums look very pale pink to me, is
there a link to pics of gums of anemic cats? I won't get anymore cats
(besides possibly boyfriends kitty) as long as she is around. But I plan
to work with animals as a career so I am wondering if feline leukemia is
transmissible to other mammals??? Tsunade is the only mammal have right
now but that could change as I plan to do rescue/rehab work, breeding
animals, and/or other animal work. Would it be potentially harmful to
other carnivours (the order- not just food lifestyle) such as genets,
civets, skunks, etc? How about other felines such as servels, ocelots,
lions, and tigers?? My dream career is to someday have my own animal
show and documentaries (such as the late and great Steve Irwin did)? I
have rescued and relocated snakes and cats many times in the past, a few
weeks ago I helped babysit 2 lion cubs for a zoo fundraiser (they did not
have contact with Tsunade or her body fluids), and I studied and worked
with exotics and not-so-exotic's all my life. I currently have a small
amount of pets, beta fish aquata and mist, trunks the uromastyx lizard,
treeko the golden gecko, and some colonies of fiddler crabs, hermit
crabs, and crayfish.

thanks, from a dissapointed yet optimistic for 5 + years

I know we're just about out of time, where there's still life, and therefore still hope, but hope is dwindling rapidly. As I told you, I had the housecall vet on the phone this morning. He even had a cancellation and could have come this afternoon. I hung up without making an appointment. Something is holding me back from making that final decision. I tend to think, when I feel this way, that perhaps there's a miracle just waiting, if only I could figure out what to do to nudge it along. Before I began this post, I was thinking maybe I could call the housecall vet back and have him come draw blood for more tests. Unfortunately, Spencer's so emaciated at this point, I doubt his veins would support a blood draw. I have a call into my AC... I'm wondering if perhaps my hesitation to relieve Spencer of his practically useless body has more to do with allowing death to take it's natural course. Maybe the light in his eyes has
more to do with him being glad for the opportunity to pass on his own then what I was hopefully interpreting yesterday as an indication of possible recovery. I know everyone on the list knows, (and of course Hideyo has just gone through it with her little Tsubomi), just how hard it is to watch and wait and comfort and cry through that process. I've always believed that euthanasia is a gift of love, that if it is done for the animal and not for our own convenience, or even to ease our own suffering, then it is the right thing to do. In Spencer's case, I'm not getting any of the signals that normally tell me this is what he wants... I am so sorry about little Tsubomi. How long did you
have Tsubomi? I couldn't remember if she had
originally come with you to the U.S. or if that was

2006-10-10 Thread TenHouseCats

as we all here know, this is the very hardest place we as catparents
ever find ourselves.

for me, it's remembering that sometimes i'm the position to give them
that final gift, of peace, in gratitude for all the love they've
offered me. learning to separate out my own needs from theirs is the
hard part...

i do want to say, tho, that one of the most profound things anyone
ever told me was that, "it is better to send them home one day too
early, than 5 minutes too late." protecting them from suffering is,
for me, the biggest thing...

You would not want to be rushed on yours. If you know in your heart that
you would want to be helped along if your were in their paws consider it.
Or if they flat tell you it is time and they need or want help.

The awful thing is you have to be so much stronger to do this. With Kitty I
have no doubt that I did right letting her leave on her own.

Something is holding me back from making that final decision. I tend to
think, when I feel this way, that perhaps there's a miracle just waiting,
if only I could figure out what to do to nudge it along. Before I began
this post, I was thinking maybe I could call the housecall vet back and
have him come draw blood for more tests. Unfortunately, Spencer's so
emaciated at this point, I doubt his veins would support a blood draw. I
have a call into my AC... I'm wondering if perhaps my hesitation to
relieve Spencer of his practically useless body has more to do with
allowing death to take it's natural course. Maybe the light in his eyes
has more to do with him being glad for the opportunity to pass on his own
then what I was hopefully interpreting yesterday as an indication of
possible recovery. I know everyone on the list knows, (and of course

Too much pepcid also causes stomach upset and can be hard on the
kidney's (learned this from the CRF group I'm on). Fred who does have
stomach upset and was vomiting foamy stuff, gets a 1/4 tablet a day and
most CRF kitties start out on 1/4 EOD, the least amount you need to use
to solve the problem the better.

personally would take him to the vet. His symptoms of not wanting to
eat are exactly what Bailey was going thorough and I will always wonder
if his undiagnosed and untreated pancreatitis turned into cancer.

Sounds very much like pancreatitis, this is exactly how Bailey

Re: Sharing price information

2006-10-10 Thread wendy
Hi Kelly,

I would be happy to compile the info. that everyone
posts. I just need a little patience from anyone
waiting for it, as it might take some time to get
everything together. I think it's a fantastic idea.
I would have to think about how to do the layout, but
I would do it in Excel, which hopefully everyone has
on their computer. If not, I know there is probably
be someone out there on this list who would be willing
to scan the document into a PDF file so the remaining
people who can't download in Excel can download in
Adobe. I don't have a scanner. Everyone, send me
your prices and location (and whether that price comes
from a low-cost clinic, or a regular city, suburban,
or rural vet)!!!

Yes, the shock of it will come soon.

Re: dental work

2006-10-10 Thread cindy reasoner
I only had a problem once with any of my babies after
a dental. It was with Madison and it took her a few
days to get over the anesthesia. They use something
different now but I can't remember the name of it. It
is on her chart at the vet's office. The vet I use
will send them home with antibiotics and pain medicine
if they had any extractions. Also, the vet will have
me feed them soft food for about 5 days. They do blood
work before they sedate them to be sure nothing is
going on they don't know about. I am taking my dog
(Mollie) tomorrow to get a dental. I hope this helps.

Cats teeth are designed for tearing meat off the bone.. Not so much for
grinding food up
as with humans... Cats have stronger stomach acid and can swallow and
digest larger
chunks of food... Thus they can do without teeth and eat most
commercial cat food...
My cats have never had a problem and have been eating normally within a
few hours
after an extraction... Often eating better than before when they had
pain in their mouth..
Actually tooth problems is a major cause of not eating... And gum
problems are big
with FeLV+ cats...

On the other hand if an infection gets in the jaw, which does happen,
it can be very hard
to get rid of and can end up killing the cat...

My personal opinion... If a tooth is giving problem, just pull it
out... And if that means
pulling them all out.. so be it...

If all they need is cleaning then that is great !!!

  Hi guys
I was just reading the sharing price archive and it made me
think!! In a month or so Crackers will be going for a dental check up.
His first. What exactly happens and can anyone share experiences such
as how their babies felt and acted afterwards, what things are usually
done? All the vet told me was that in the future we will do dental
work. Nothing to worry about now. I read once where an owner got gold
caps on the kitties teeth. LOL! i dont think cracker is the kinda bling
bling cat!! Hope all is well
  much love

Ps he has had his teeth and gums checked at each visit.

Hi Kayte!

I do alot of the teeth cleanings at my clinic, so I can tell you how
we do them and what to ask your vet if that will help!

A regular dental does involve your pet being sedated and
intubated...ask your vet what type of anesthetic will be used (we use
isofluorane--an inhalant anesthetic that is considered very safe as it
is not metabolized by the body and allows a fast recovery). As for
the dental itself, depending on the condition of the teeth (amount of
tartar, etc.), the length of time it takes for a full cleaning is
about 1/2 hour...We use an ultrasonic "water pick" similar to what
human dentists use to scale the teeth, then polish (again, like human
dentists do) and apply fluoride! Depending on your clinic, there may
be a dental technician who does the cleaning with the vet standing by
to perform any extractions, or the vet may do the cleaning herself!

As for other questions you may want to ask...I'm not sure how old
Crackers is, but if he is older, be sure to ask whether or not the
clinic has a heating device to keep his body temp regulated while
sedated. Body temps drop when sedated which can drop blood pressure
and make the recovery process much longer...especially in older pets!
You may also want to ask about fluid therapy while sedated and even
during the recovery process (I.V. drip)...it's not a necessary thing,
but can aid in a smooth recovery process!

Overall, a dental is a safe procedure! Just get all the assurances on
the sedation process (we typically pre-med with atropine and some type
of pain management med...as a sidenote for DOG owners, beware of the
use of ketoprofen as a pain med for DOGS!! It's rare, but severe
ulcering of the GI tract can occur)!

Hope this helps!

Re: What do i do?

2006-10-10 Thread Tad Burnett

No... You can't tell for sure without tests... I think this is called
an educated guess...
And probably a good likely hood of being right...

The treatment for an FeLV+ cat is basically the same as it should be
for a neg. cat...
Good food.. Good care... low stress... Not running outside where it is
exposed to
other diseases and weather extremes... A trip to the vet at the first
sign of a bug...
Interferon... but actually this too has worked in neg.  cats for hard
URI cases

Some vets will push expensive testing at every chance and others will
make you ask
for it... Same with treatment... There are many cats that are FeLV+
that are living
good lives although probably short and no one will ever know they were
pos...
And there are many healthy cats that are tested pos. and put to sleep
without
anyone being asked if they want to keep the cat for the rest of its
healthy life...

The trick is to find a vet that will treat in accordance with your
wants... Most vets
are flexible but you may have to make yourself known as to what you
want...

another opinion though. It doesn't sound right that a vet can look at a
kitty and say he has FELV Pos. and the other kitty looks like he is
getting it?? I only have 1 cat 5yrs old and the only way I found out he
was POS was a blood test. Looking at him 20 lbs and thick coat he looks
like a healthy LOVE bug:) I know animals have there own "issues" but
isnt that kinda like you and hubby/ significant other going to Drs and

looking at the cat?

Nina, I am so sorry to hear about Spencer. I am
praying that he will start eating again. I know when
some of my babies won't eat I will get a rotisserie
chicken from the grocery store and sometimes they will
eat that. I know it may not help with Spencer. Both
of you are in my prayers.

I just read the entire group listing! I am sooo sorry about Spencer and I
dont have any experience with the sickness part. Pokemon died from lyphomia but
I didn't even know she had it!! She got sick and in a short time was gone. Then
again I thought she was a kitten and she was 6-7 yrs old. She was a stray i
foundAnyways..I am holding you and Spencer in my heart and prayers. My God
its so hard to read about Spencer. Poor little thing. But Nina Spencer loves
you! That's why he came back to you his mommy and that's why he is still here.
Our cats have there special connection with us! I dont know what I would do if
Crackers was in Spencers situation. I would follow my heart! Good luck in the
battle and Bless you guys.

Hi Nina & Spencer,

I agree w/ Michelle about trying some Reglan or Pepcid & maybe some
fluids.  That might be enough to make the difference.  Are you on the
Feline Assisted Feeding group @ yahoogroups?  They may have some
suggestions, too.  I'm pulling for Spencer & will be keeping you both
in my prayers.
