Re: [Felvtalk] Help- need advice on fleas

I use advantage. FeLV cats are very prone to Hemobartonella, which will cause
severe anemia & comes from fleas. ALL my cats get Advantage every month & I
have never had a problem. Fleas also cause tape worms which will deprive the
cat of nutrients.

Hi all...I suspect Spanky may have fleas. I found some flea dirt looking dust
and a lump under his chin and also have been seeing little red bugs around but
no fleas when I comb him. Some were flying so I thought, they couldn't be
fleas. I also have a dog and it has been unseasonably warm here in WI this
week.

Please let me know how you treat an felv kitty with a weak immune system for
fleas. I am terrified at the prospect of having to spray my home and treat
him. He used to get one of the topicals years ago but vet didn't think that
would be good for him now. We have a vet appt tomorrow for ltci injection and
bloodwork. I am taking some of the sample bugs I collected for
identification.

Thanks for your help, Stacy and Spanky

Re: [Felvtalk] Aggie Introduction Part 2

2010-10-11 Thread nise...@yahoo.com
Andy,

What a great introduction to the wonderful Aggie! Glad that she & Crookshanks
are accepting the baby so well. When my daughter was born, my cat Chaucer gave
her the cold shoulder for months. Didn't go into her room, pretended all the
baby paraphernalia was invisible, a definite "if I don't acknowledge its
presence, it'll just go away" attitude. But during their 12 years together, my
daughter turned out to be the person Chaucer loved best.

I was extremely interested in Aggie's history, especially your experience with
treatments like LTCI and Interferon. Since there are so few clinical trials &
studies to go by, shared first hand experiences are invaluable. Thank you so
much for taking the time to write everything up.

Will look for your posts about your continuing journey with Aggie...

Subject: [Felvtalk] Aggie Introduction Part 2

Our story continues with Aggie introduction, part 2..

At this point, I would have chalked the seizure up to the mirtaziprine if it
wasn't for the fact that the day before we gave her the drug, Aggie was meowing
very loudly and had thrown up a bit of a clear liquid. While my wife didn't
see
it, she wasn't covered in drool and wasn't disoriented like after the two known
seizures. So, we really don't know what happened, but suspect it was a milder
seizure type incident, and the mirtaziprine made everything worse. My vet, nor
the vet I consulted with at UC Davis, thinks the mirtaziprine was the major
cause, though they did admit that it might be what triggered the grand mal, and
the later, smaller seizure. So, to be on the safe side, she has been on
phenobarbitol for about a month now, with no further seizures (my wife is home
with our 3 month old baby, so she would know). The first three weeks on it
were
rough--sluggish, lots of sleeping, and incoordinated with weakness in her hind
legs. (Cat, not the wife, for those of you still reading!) As of now, she is
pretty much back to normal, with just a little residual weakness. Nowhere near
where it was, though.

At present, still getting interferon every day, reloaded her with LTCI weekly
for three weeks, and now moving back to what had become the sweet spot of every
2 weeks (next shot is this Saturday) and hoping for the best. When we next
test
her blood in a few weeks, we might see if we can screen for toxoplasmosis and
cryptococcus (I know I misspelled this!) but didn’t have the cash to do it the
first time around. Another possibility is that she might have been exposed to
insecticide, as we had the outside of our home sprayed for wasps a month or so
ago. The day of the first "incident" it had rained, and she was sitting for
most of the day at the screen door looking out into the yard. She was sitting
over the door jam (but still behind the screen, mere inches from an area that
had been heavily sprayed, as it was a problem area, and the recent rain could
have easily washed some of the toxins through the screen for her to breathe or
even lick.

Could have gotten to her paws, and she could have licked them--I don't know.
Other possibilities are of course, a brain tumor, the FELV crossing the blood
brain barrier, lymphoma of the gut that had metastatized (probably misspelled
this one too) into her brain but avoided the lungs and hasn’t swelled up her
lymph nodes enough that the vet can feel, or the aforementioned poisoning,
crypto, and toxoplasmosis. Our other cat, who has lived with us for five
years
(and is FELV negative but vaccinated) was a cat that settled on the front porch
of the house we had just moved into. So, it is possible he brought it in, but
her immune system was strong enough to deal with it for 5 years.

At this point, Aggie seems happy, weight is alright, appetite is good, and her
zest for life is apparent. She doesn't mind being around the baby at all, and
we are trying to make every day a party for as long as we have her. She is the
protypical cat, in that she is alternatingly spunky, sweet, and antisocial and
loves to chase my wife's hair clips all over the house. She'll ignore almost
every other toy, but not those hair bands.

Our FELV negative boy--Crookshanks, is the sweetest animal known to humanity.
He loves the baby, and (supervised of course) will sit with her and
occasionally
nuzzle her feet. He will sit on the couch above me as I hold the baby, and
groom my head with his tongue. He does the same to my wife, if he isn’t in her
lap. He would love to groom the baby too, but that is a bit much!

So—that is one long introduction! In all likelihood, we are on the downhill
slope of our time together, but who knows—she is a spunky girl and we’ve been
lucky to have her for so long. I’ll keep you posted as we go through the rest
of our journey together. Even though we never met, all of you have

My Chloe died today - she's a gray and white FELV kitty, a lovely and sweet
kitty.  I got her in Sept 2005, from a lady in Oklahoma named Jennifer.
Jennifer had been a vet tech, and had FELV cats, but when her baby developed
serious problems and she needed to pass her specia needs cats on to someone
else, and I took them.

One by one they have passed on.  Chloe was the last - she was 15 or 16, claws
had grown out, and she was having some kidney problems.  Fall is so dry, it
seems to be hard on kidney cats.

Chloe was a sweetie and had a soft and gentle passing.  I kept covering her and
trying to keep her hydrated and warm, but she said no mom, I don't want the
cover on me. Sleep soft sweet Chloe.

get tired of them quickly, and, they are expensive, $20 a pouch.

Bonnie, I don't know what buffers are used with the tablets. I buy the pure
L-lysine powder from www.iHerbs.com. That way I don't have to worry about
reactions to buffering agents. It comes in a 1 lb jar. I use 1/4 tsp (250 mg)
per qt. of water or per one 5.5 oz can of food.

Andy,

What a wonderful story and a very lucky kitty (both of them). Sure wish there
were more folks like y'all in the world.

I have a Feluk positive kitty with a neurological disorder ( feline cerebellar
hyposplasia - he wobbles a bit) that we just rescued and I need to find a home
for him. S, if anyone knows someone in Texas who might want to adopt,
let me know :)

[Felvtalk] Aggie Introduction Part 2

2010-10-11 Thread Andy Domek

Our story continues with Aggie introduction, part 2..

At this point, I would have chalked the seizure up to the mirtaziprine if it
wasn't for the fact that the day before we gave her the drug, Aggie was meowing
very loudly and had thrown up a bit of a clear liquid. While my wife didn't
see it, she wasn't covered in drool and wasn't disoriented like after the two
known seizures. So, we really don't know what happened, but suspect it was a
milder seizure type incident, and the mirtaziprine made everything worse. My
vet, nor the vet I consulted with at UC Davis, thinks the mirtaziprine was the
major cause, though they did admit that it might be what triggered the grand
mal, and the later, smaller seizure. So, to be on the safe side, she has been
on phenobarbitol for about a month now, with no further seizures (my wife is
home with our 3 month old baby, so she would know). The first three weeks on
it were rough--sluggish, lots of sleeping, and incoordinated with weakness in
her hind legs. (Cat, not the wife, for those of you still reading!) As of
now, she is pretty much back to normal, with just a little residual weakness.
Nowhere near where it was, though.

At present, still getting interferon every day, reloaded her with LTCI weekly
for three weeks, and now moving back to what had become the sweet spot of every
2 weeks (next shot is this Saturday) and hoping for the best. When we next
test her blood in a few weeks, we might see if we can screen for toxoplasmosis
and cryptococcus (I know I misspelled this!) but didn’t have the cash to do it
the first time around. Another possibility is that she might have been exposed
to insecticide, as we had the outside of our home sprayed for wasps a month or
so ago.

Our other cat, who has lived with us for five
years (and is FELV negative but vaccinated) was a cat that settled on the front
porch of the house we had just moved into. So, it is possible he brought it
in, but her immune system was strong enough to deal with it for 5 years.

He loves the baby, and (supervised of course) will sit with her and
occasionally nuzzle her feet. He will sit on the couch above me as I hold the
baby, and groom my head with his tongue. He does the same to my wife, if he
isn’t in her lap.

Even though we never met, all of you have given me so
much hope and inspiration. To those of you who have lost cats, my deepest
condolences--and know that I will continue to send good thoughts and purrayers,

[Felvtalk] Aggie Introduction Part 1

2010-10-11 Thread Andy Domek

This is the first of two posts--my wordy self had originally tried to post one
long email, but I was over the limit. So, I thought it was a good idea to
break it up. Without further ado--here is part 1--part 2 is being posted
momentarily.

Hi all,

I've been following for awhile, but never actually joined. So, first and
foremost--thank you for all of your wonderful information and kindness you show
to each other on a daily basis. It is truly inspiring. Prepare thyselves for
a VERY long email

Second, while I am new to the list, I am not new to FELV as I've had a
wonderful FELV + kitty (Aggie) that my wife and I raised from a kitten since
2004. We found her and her siblings, less than a year after we got married,
under the dumpster of the apartment complex where we used to live. We got them
cleaned up, adopted out, and then the one person who adopted two of them called
to let us know that they were going to have one of them put down due to testing
positive for FELV. So, despite not being a "cat" person--as I've always had
dogs and birds, we became a cat family. So, I've been living with the disease,
knowing full well what it could do, for over 6 years now. She's tested
positive throughout the years on Elisa and IFA on multiple occasions.

Aggie Lucky Trouble has given us so much joy since day one. I have loved
every minute of having her in my life—within ten minutes of her being “mine”
she had me wrapped around her little paw and she became the matriarch of a long
line of cats that I’m sure my family will have throughout the years.
For the first 5 years of Aggie's life, she took daily Alpha Interferon from a
dropper (it is still the highlight of her day--she loves the stuff!), went
to the vet twice a year for wellness checkups and she wasn't sick a day in her
life. In the summer of 2009, however, I noticed a bump behind her right ear.
Long story short, it was an adenocarcinoma of the parotid salivary gland. Vets
at UC Davis said it was encapsulated, and they got all the cancer they could
see, with a very small, but clean margin. We opted not to do radiation, as we
didn't want to stress her little system and get the FELV into active mode. We
diligently checked for regrowths, had her lungs x-rayed every few months, and
had bloodwork run a few times a year. No return of the adenocarcinoma that we
know of.

Spring of 2010, she's active and playful as normal, but her bloodwork, and
weight started to decline. Everything looked good other than WBC 3.8,
neutrophils 2000, and platelets (est 50-120)were a bit low. On followup tests,
the WBC and neutrophils were even a bit lower (3.6 and 1800, respectively).
So, we went the LTCI route. After 3 weekly shots, things had declined further
(WBC 2.8 and Neutrophils 1200), but we had read this would happen initially as
the stuff killed off the infected cells.

Went to every other week on the stuff, and things had improved (WBC 4.0,
Neutophils 2800, and Platelets 120-Normal--not as worried about platelets as
she is VERY difficult to get a sample from--it usually takes everyone in the
office and she gives everybody heck). Subsequent tests (still at every two
weeks) and WBC had risen to 4.8, Neutrophils to 3800, and same platelets).

All was good until a month or so ago, when I noticed her weight was down a bit,
so I gave her a quarter pill of an appetite stimulant--mirazapine--and a half
hour later she was seizing (lasted 30 seconds, but it seemed like hours). This
was also the time when we tried to stretch her LTCI to every three weeks.
Rushed her to the e-vet, where she was her normal, wild self--leaping on the
vet's keyboard and getting in the way. Didn't run any tests, as the e-vet
thought it would be less expensive at our regular vet's office. Two days
later, she had another, milder seizure--still standing, responsive to her name,
but drooling and twitching, and contorted. Lots of loud meows and a bit spacey
afterword for a few minutes, but back to normal after that. Told that the
mirtaziprine will be in the system for at least 72 hours, so it is possible
that it lowered the threshold for her body to have a seizure. This would make
sense, as her last seizure was about 68 hours after her first seizure. She has
had no seizures since.

Our regular vet wanted to refer us out to UC Davis, but overall costs for
diagnostic tests were going to be almost $5000, which we couldn't afford. So,
we did a compromise, and our regular vet did a chest x-ray to see if there was
some sort of systemic cancer, and we ran blood to see if there was something
there that might indicate a seizure. The only weird thing was that her
bloodwork looked great (for her anyway--still 4.8 WBC, and good neutrophils and
everything else). Nothing in the lungs either.

Have been reading lately on here about L-Lysine for the cat...I crushed a
tablet very well (I have a mortar and pestle from when my mom was here and
we had to crush her meds) and added it to Lucky's food. Poor guy vomited it
right up -- I mean, back into the feed dishes!
So now I don't know exactly what to do...maybe decrease to half a tab (about
250 mg)?
Anyone else had a cat with a bad reaction to L-Lysine? Ideas?
Thanks!

[Felvtalk] Treatments for (possibly) recently infected cat?

2010-10-11 Thread Rachel
Hi-

A couple weeks ago I posted about a foster cat (Oscar) I took in that tested
positive on the SNAP test and negative on the IFA test for FeLV. Prior to the
SNAP test, I had kept him mostly confined but occasionally let him out
supervised. The last time I let him out, he suddenly attacked a nursing foster
cat I have named Simone. The fight lasted only about 30 seconds before I broke
it up, but I was bit in the process by Oscar, so I know he was trying to bite
Simone. I examined her then and after Oscar tested positive (about five days
later) and did not detect any bite marks or puncture wounds. She tested
negative, but I've had her confined ever since pending a re-test. That was
about three weeks ago and she was tested on Sept. 28, so she was not scheduled
to be retested for at least a couple more weeks.

I read that FeLV is not usually infectious until about stage five. Oscar
tested
negative on the IFA so I had hoped that even if he did bite Simone, he was not
shedding the virus. Well, Simone has now developed persistent diarrhea the
past
week and a half, which I read can be a symptom of the acute phase of infection.

I had her stool tested a week ago for coccidia (which Oscar also had) and they
did NOT detect coccidia. I've been feeding her a diet of boiled chicken and
brown rice/pasta with lots of lysine and vitamins mixed in to boost her immune
system, but the diarrhea persists. I have a vet appt. for her this morning to
have her examined.

My question is if there is anything that can be done for a recently infected
cat
to help them fight off the virus? Also, if Simone is infected with FeLV, the
chances are likely her kittens will have it as well, no? She has four 5-week
old kittens and is surrogate nursing one 3-week old kitten. None show any
symptoms and appear to be healthy and robust kitties, however, I read that cats
infected as kittens are most likely to be viremic and go on to develop the
disease FeLV. In that case, my vet recommends euthanization. There is a
rescue
with a shelter local to me that has a room for FeLV+ cats, but they have a
waiting list four cats deep right now and I don't know how long it would be to
get in five kittens! Also, I am told that viremic cats rarely live past 2-3
years of age. I'm trying to think positive thoughts, but all the worrying,
guilt and "what-ifs" is just agonizing. Your thoughts?

Rachel

Subject: [Felvtalk] Another Murphy relapse-now URI

Another Murphy relapse...poor boy is all congested and sneezy with a URI, he
began with light sneezing earlier this week, I gave him a PennG shot Friday
night because he had sneezed so much that he was getting bloody droplets. Now
he's really getting plugged up. I called the vet to see about reducing his
prednisolone dose because steroids suppress the immune system. He's been on
Lasix and Pred for 3 weeks since his diagnosis of Lymphoma. We are cutting him
down to 1/2 from 5mg 2x a day to once a day. I have put some L-Lysine powder
into gel caps because he will not eat it in his food nor eat the very expensive
Lysine treats we tried in the past. Seems the Lysine is supposed to help keep
the herpes virus (viruses in general) from replicating. This flares up every
time his immune system is low and he ends up with upper respiratory problems. I
know he's not feeling well because I've waken up with him snuggled with me on
the bed for the last 2 mornings. He normally doesn't get on the bed, he likes
to
sleep by the open slider screen door. I am still optimistic because his
breathing is still better, hopefully the fluid is still gone from his chest
area, he was in for his check up a week ago and the vet was impressed with how
clear his lungs sounded. Maybe he picked up a bug from the exam room-he was
wandering on the floor, my fault for letting him move around. He's such a
people
person, he likes all the people at the vet clinic and wants to see what they
are
doing. I hope the Lysine helps soon. They said if he's still congested, we can
try a mild Afrin nasal decongestant. He's not that bad yet, I don't think, just
somewhat depressed. Not eating as much, but still eating the AD and all the
gravy from the fancy feast plus some dry food. I know some may be tired of
hearing about Murphy, but I think it may help to keep hope alive, he keeps
bouncing back since the end of July when he became so anemic that by the first
of August I had to syringe feed him for a few days. He is on Procrit now just
once a week instead of 3x a week. Please, purrayers help!! Alice
