[Felvtalk] New FeLV Kitten

Hello,

There is a cat who comes by my house and I have been feeding her for over three 
years. I have tried to trap her previously but she stops eating as soon as the 
trap appears so I gave up assuming she had been checked and spayed. Last week, 
she came with a small kitten and I worked hard on trying to secure a trap to 
catch the mom or kitten. I have been unable to get a trap to catch the mom yet. 
Last Thursday morning, I caught the kitten and took her to the vet, and she 
tested positive for feline leukemia. 
I was so devastated because I guess we all agreed we would take this new little 
gift on as she literally had landed in front of our door. She is so lively and 
playful so we are hopeful. Our vet is really kind and good. He did note that 
she might not live very long because she tested positive and has enlarged 
glands but we are hopeful.  I am now emailing many groups who work with feral 
cats about getting a trap to catch the mom and have her fixed.

Regarding kitten, we are keeping her, we are very sad but we will take care of 
her because she is so lovely and we want to offer her the best possible life 
until she is sick. If she is sick, we have read many reports which note that 
testing kitten for feline leukemia before 6months can usually show them as 
positive but it's only because of the mothers milk, etc...in them. 

We are also contacting groups to see if there is a person or a family with a 
cat or cats with feline leukemia who would want this new little bundle of joy 
just so she would have playmates. We feel awful because we have her in a 
bedroom, she cannot come to contact with our two other cats who are not FeLV 
positive. We have prepared the room for the kitten and have made a beautiful 
place for her. Lots of toys, kitty condo, obstacle courses so she can play 
around. 

My friend just told me about this group, so I am joining to find out more about 
our options, what to do next regarding our other cats, and best ways to take 
care of her.

Thank you for your encouraging words, we are very happy with kitten and she is 
happy with us. We will retest her in a few weeks when she reaches a few months 
old.

Hello,

I'm sorry for that first email.
I wanted to find out if anyone had some
advice and suggestions on nutrition for the little kitten I have rescue who is 
FeLV positive. She has tested positive and is the kitten of a feral cat, her 
glands are big but I'm hoping because she is now indoor and being cared for 
well she will test negative so I can keep her with my other two adult cats.
I have been feeding her canned good with very high protein contents and no 
seafood, I read that was the recommended diet but any other suggestions, hints, 
are very welcome!

Hello,
Thanks, she is already taking l-lysine twice a day. We have done stool sample, 
bloodwork and urine test and there is no infection, which is why my vet believe 
she will test positive again when retested in 3 months.

Thank for this advice. Kitty, the little feral, I rescued us living in her 
bedroom with all her toys and things. She is due for her vaccinations and very 
soon to be spayed. I'm holding off on the vaccinations but she will get spayed 
soon. Keeping fingers crossed that when I retest her she is negative so she can 
play with my other two cats.

[Felvtalk] Breathing issues

[Maryam Ulomi]

Hello,
Kitty, the kitten I rescued from a feral mother 6 weeks ago, is making some 
chirping like sounds now. She also does some meowing and those chirping sounds 
when she jumps around or plays. Is that anything to be concerned about?
Yesterday she did this not panting thing once and then again this am; I have an 
appointment to see the vet . But does anyone about such behavior?

[Felvtalk] Eye problems with FeLv kitte

Hello everyone,
We are all very happy with our little Kitty in our lives, but for the last 
three weeks she has had this eye residues in her eyes. We got an ointment from 
our vet and used it for 10 days on both eyes and yesterday was the last day. 
Her eyes were good and the residues in her eyes had lessen during that time. 
Today was her first day without any medication and the gook is back. I'm 
calling the vet tomorrow morning but do anyone one of you have any experience  
with something like that?

[Felvtalk] Spaying advice

Hello everyone,

We are looking at possibly spaying Kitty, our 5 months old FeLV rescued feral 
baby. She is currently on the lysine and living large in her own room, isolated 
from our other two cats, since she posted positive but we are retesting her at 
6months, which should be in December.
Should we retest first and then spay?
Is there anything we should know/do to prepare ?

Any suggestions are welcome

I feed her paw linking chicken by weruva and she loves it. Do you think the 
food could be causing her to be gassy? Her stomach just makes lots of noise, 
there are no loose stools or anything other symptoms.

I gave her instinct this morning and will see if eating that for a few days 
will make a difference.

Hi Mike, 

We rescued feral kitten in August and we have two other cats who are older. We 
keep our two older neg FeLV cats separated from Kitty, our FeLV positive cat. 
There is a lot of different opinions regarding mixing and not mixing. However 
based on the age of our other two cats we decided not to mix them. 
I would reiterate what others have said and recommend reading posts about 
mixing and talking to your vet as well.

Hi Carrie,
I am so sorry to hear about your kitties. And I am praying they get better very 
soon.
I had put a post up asking the group about raw food for FeLV cats but no one 
responded or commented about using that for their cats.
I have read that for FeLV cats it might be a hazard because their systems 
cannot withstand any challenges from parasites.
Also I have read that seafood is not recommended for FeLV cats so I do not feed 
any seafood to mine.
I am trying to find a holistic vet to start my FeLV cat on a special diet but 
it's always best to be in contact with a vet when starting the home cook diet 
or a raw diet.
If the cats are sick l would take them to vet so they can be treated right 
away, with FeLV early prevention is the best policy.

[Felvtalk] Diarrhea

Hello everyone,

I'm sorry to bother you all, last night, a few minutes past midnight, Kitty had 
diarrhea. She had it again at 4 this morning and again about 15min ago now. 
Her feeding schedule has been, she ate her regular canned food with mixed water 
at 9pm last night and again this morning at 5am, when fed her this morning, I 
made sure to make to mix more water than usual with her food.
There has been no changes to her diet in the past few days but she did go to 
the vet on Wednesday and all her bloodwork came back without issues.
At this time should I start her on a broth diet? Any specific items to include? 
Vitamins? How long? should we take her to the vet?
According to dr. Pitcairns book yogurt is also good after two days of broth, is 
that a good idea?
How about using slippery elm?

ill add a little white rice, pumpkin and feed her that broth.

Thank you for your good wishes and suggestions. Kitty has not had diarrhea 
since 9am, I did not feed her until 4:30 and then only homemade chicken broth , 
with a little white rice and pumpkin.
She has had that three times and since she has peed twice but no bowel 
movement. I'm hoping I can reintroduce solid food tomorrow at some point.

[Felvtalk] Lethargic

Hi everyone,
Need some advice and help.
Kitty, our 10 months old FeLV positive cat is wonderful, very active and 
playful.
Since last night, she has been laying out more than usual and today she spent 
most of the day just laying on the bed and not being very active.
Are these signs I really need to be concerned about or just a little tiredness?
It's Friday and I would hate for her to deteriorate over the weekend,

Her gums are ok.
Thank you everyone for your suggestions and concerns.
Kitty was back to normal by late Friday and by Saturday she was her old self.
I always manage to overreact with Kitty as I'm afraid to allow any symptoms to 
linger. 
We have a feline holistic vet coming to the house on Thursday to look at Kitty 
and look at integrating more supplements and raw/homemade food to her diet.

I made Dr. Pitcairn's brownies for dogs and cats, took less than one hour and 
Kitty loves it. My other cat, FeLV neg cat wouldn't even lick it once.

[Felvtalk] Homemade food for FeLV cats

Hello,

Do you use dr. Lisa Pearson or Dr. Pitcarns recipes for homemade food for cats?
I'm planning on starting to feed homemade food to Kitty, 11month FeLV positive 
girl
I rescued . Any suggestions?
I have their recipes but any other suggestions are welcome,

[Felvtalk] Sense of smell and food

Hi everyone,
I have two questions regarding Kitty, our one year old FeLV+.
Since she turned one year old, she has become less responsive to food or is 
less food oriented. Up to two months ago, she would drop everything to eat and 
get very excited about food, she would gulp her food down but now she eats a 
little and then walks away and then returns. Sometimes she eats more and 
sometimes she eats less and she has off days for eating. Is that normal? I know 
her weight is stable as I have a baby scale and I weight her monthly.
My second question is regarding her sense of smell, which seems to be slightly 
off.  A few times I have left her food or a few treats and she seems to not to 
see it or find it. Do cats with FeLV have that?

Hi,
I totally agree, if it last more than 24hr you should take her to the vet to 
get blood work and look at the stool as well.

[Felvtalk] Too little appetite

Hello everyone,

Kitty, our little 19 months old FeLV positive cat, has for the past three days 
been eating less than usual. I have tried all sort of new canned foods but she 
eats a little bit and then walks away. She will eat maybe 1/3 of what she would 
normally eat in one meal then walk away sometimes she comes back to it but 
mostly she will want something else. If I give it to her in a new bowl she 
might it or not.
She has not stopped eating all together but I'm concerned that she is not 
eating as much as previously. 
She plays, poops and pees, does not hide, is otherwise her usual adorable self.
Has anyone seen these signs before?
I don't know if i should take her to the vet or wait.

She is eating dry food, which I never give her but as a treat when I brush her 
teeth.
