Amanda,
I'm so sorry to hear about Tora.
I've have read your postings about him even though at the time I wasn't able to respond to due computer problems. Now I'm able too.
Yes, he was blessed to be in a loving home and died without you beingpresent.
My experience is cats will do this.

My Smokey did this to me a few years ago when he died. I stayed close to him for his last 3 days as I was exhausted from no sleep and worried about him. Then when I drifted off to a nap close to him something tugged at me to wake up and I did. I seen he passed. I didn't want him to be alone and wanted to be with him when he left.
Guess he didn't want me to make such a big deal so he did this and caught me off guard.
He was 19 years old died to kidney failure and his old body couldn't take it anymore. He was Felv negative.
I had him since he was 5-6 weeks old and he traveled with me where ever I went. He was my shadow. I know a few of you remember me posting about him.
If you go to my site you can read about my Tazzy. He was Felv positive. He left me at 2 years old. I didn't get to say good bye to him either. He was around and grew up with Smokey my other cats. Smokey and the other cats never got Felv from Tazzy. They all slept, ate, played, and used the same litter boxes.

So often it is true that cats do perk up and eat in their final days for whatever reasons.
I've had this happen too and I know I'm going to loose them.

Just remember Tora loved you!
The day will come when we all will be with our cats that have passed again.
Meanwhile they will send other angels to us to help. When we least expect it.

You are in my thoughts and prayers!

He was put on steriods 3 months ago to help him be able to eat because of the big lymphoma in his chest,, he did well for 2 months.. but last month the lymphoma wouldn't respond to it anymore and we tried elspar injection but it didn't help either.. and luckily didn't effect Tora in a bad way too.. the only thing that helped Tora live the last 3 weeks as comfortabley as he could was himself knowong that he couldn't eat normal amounts of food anymore.. the first few days he was still determined to eat and would vomit it right back again :( so he learned that he couldn't eat like that anymore and accepted to eat in small ammounts and always minced raw chicken and some liver.. he would stil go out and sometimes bat at an insect but mostly he just sat arround and watched our other cats..the last week he had gone off the chicken and only eat egg yolks or chicken intestines...which Japanese often give their pets..The last 3 weeks is was on no meds and had no vet visits and no sub fluids and I can honestly say that his last days were quite comfortable compared to mt other cats who had been pumped up with fluids and drugs :( so I am pleased with that and pleased that he didn't have to get stressed out at the vets...The day before yesterday he seemed a little better (he was only on fermented turmeric the last 3 weeks too)he scratched at the cat board and begged more food and jsut seemed happy.. but I kind of know taht the end was near as he was so skinny... i wonder if anyone knows why cats and humans sometimes look and feel better a couple of days before they die??Yesterday Tora didn't want his breakfast, at about 10a.m he licked some egg yolk only... and after that wouldn't accept anything.. so I knew then too that the end was near and didn't force anything on him. last night he tried to climb the stairs which he did everynight but could only make it half way, and laid down in his side on the widest stair... I went to sleep at 11 and tickled his chin.. but this time he didn't want to be touched... so I stroked him and told him that I loved him and went to bed, this morning I found him on the same stair , he had died dueing the night.. he never cried out and he looked very peaceful... I am glad that I resisted and didn't take him to the vets those last weeks.. as I have gobe through this 3 times now.. I know in the last stage nothing can help. my other cats suffered terribley the last days but Tora showed no sign of big pain.. only last day he seemed more tired. We will miss him so much though and it is really sad that he ahd to get FeLV :(Also last week his father died, the neighbours black cat yes I was so surprised he suddenly got some form of skin disease and had fleas and

[Felvtalk] Casper and other losses!

2010-04-08 Thread terrie
Hello,
So sorry I haven't posted in a while but do read the postings when I can.

I'm so sorry for your loss of Casper!
Thank you for sharing your loss of him with us.
It is never easy to lose a kitty whether they have FELV or not.
They all have their little quirks and we love them for it.
Theydo have a special place in our hearts.
Yes, they do take a piece of our heart when they do leave.
I totally agree on this!

Would like to send my condolences to all that have lost their kitties to this horrible disease or other causes.
I know all too well what your going through.
I haven't had a FELV kitty in awhile.

About 3 months ago I lost 4 senior rescues all in a two week span. This was to old age or liver/kidney failure. The youngest was 14 and the oldest was 18 years old. I had them in rescue for several years. They were throw away kitties. Owners felt they were in the way or just didn't have the time for them.

Myself, recently lost my 22 year personal kitty that I had since she was 5-6 weeks old a few weeks ago.
So it was very hard for me emotionally.
I promised my kitty that she would not die at the Vet's office that she would die at home with those she loved.
I will never allow this to happen again. I swear she suffered when she did finally passed but some say it was part of the process.
It was a nightmare for me.
I've had kitties die before but nothing prepared me for what I saw with her.
Of course this happened when I could not find a Vet to come out to my house because of my location at the time.
It took me some time for me to come around on losing her.
I'm so very thankful for having her in my life all these years.
Her name was "Little Girl" aka "Mischief"
She was buried onmy property with living flowers and 2 rose bushes that I boughtin memory of her.
Yesterday, for the first time in awhile I was rooting around in thrift shops and found a huge knickknack that looked just like her. I bought it and placed it on her grave.
It is still hard for me to go out to talk to her without shedding tears.
As she was my sidekick/shadow for so many years.
She raised numerous rescue kittens over the years when she never had any herself. She was spayed at 4 months old.
She was considered the "Wise Gma" to all those around here!

Original Message Subject: [Felvtalk] Goodbye sweet CasperFrom: "Frank Sue Koren" fs...@roadrunner.comDate: Wed, April 07, 2010 5:28 pmTo: "FeLV talk" felvtalk@felineleukemia.orgI am heartbroken to say that this afternoon my sweet Casper lost his battle. He was one of the most sweet tempered cats I have ever known. He never ever bit or clawed anyone in anger, not for any reason. He used to come to bed and make bread in the middle of the night right into my stomach until I got in the habit of sleeping while holding his paws gently in my hands. He loved nothing more then to be brushed with an old blue hairbrush. In the middle of the night last night I was spending what I was pretty sure was my last few hours with him brushing him with it. He was still pushing against it with the sides of his face and purring. This morning when I left for work I told him goodbye and thanked him for coming to live with me and being such a special kitty. My mother in law sat with him today and he passed around 2:30. She told me the rest of the cats in the house came and sat in a circle around him, almost like a vigil. Orlando has slept near him for the last several days and through the night. I hope now Casper is in a place where there is no more feline leukemia and he can run free and watch the birds and chipmunks all he wants. Whenever I lose one of these sweet kitties they take a piece of my heart.___Felvtalk mailing listFelvtalk@felineleukemia.orghttp://felineleukemia.org/mailman/listinfo/felvtalk_felineleukemia.org

As you can tell I have forwarded this to my other contacts.

Was this kitty re-tested for FELV since she was returned?
If so, which test was given?
Was the one that that takes only 15 minutes or the one that is sent out?
I know Siamese when stressed out canthrow multiple postives on their test.
When the adopter returned this kitty did they show the results of the bloodwork done.
I was noticing that it was stated she was okay for adoption in the lobby?
Was this before the adoption?
I will try to help in placement of this kitty if I can.
Poor thing has gone through so much!

The kitty is female, gorgeous, spayed and vaccinated. Traci can tell you how long she’s been at the shelter – she had been adopted when the FeLV was detected – and was returned yesterday. I hope that Traci can also provide you with a photo. She’s a beautiful cat.

You may have better luck giving Traci at 253. 284.5871.

Hello,

I will see what I can do but no guarantees though.

Any photos of this kitty?

How long have you had this kitty in your care?

Male/Female?

Current on other vaccines?

Is this kitty altered?

Sorry for the questions but they are critical.

For me to get the plea out to save this kitty today I need info to send on to my other associates.

Not enough time if today is the deadline.

Re: [Felvtalk] Mixing

2010-10-14 Thread terrie
Melinda,
Well, this is my opinion and experience with having FELV kitties in the past but don'tany now.
My first personal experience was back in mid part of1999 I got a kitten that I named Taz was FELV and he died in January 2002. He had it in his bone marrow. He diedfrom secondary illnesses.
Spent a lot of money on him to try andsave him money was not a factor. My husband and I didn't care did whatever it took.
Anyway, I had other personal kitties both young and older adults that lived with this kitten up to his passing. They played, ate, shared litter boxes, bathe, and slept together during this time. My other kitties were vaccinated every year and some were not this was due to the age since I had a few seniors at the time when they passed they did not die of FELV. I have to say no one tested positive during and after he died. I lost my eldest cat back in March of 2010 that personally took care of Taz when he was alive. She did not die of FELV. She was 21 years old and went into kidney failure. I was with her when she died.
My conclusion is that no one came down with FELV.

So I guess my point is it is you that can make the decision of whether you want to mix or not.
There are some of us on this group that do mix and some that do not.
I do not have the fear of having a FELV kitty and mixing with my personal cats.

In rescue I donot mix this is for safety reasons.

Original Message Subject: [Felvtalk] MixingFrom: Melinda Kerr msk...@me.comDate: Wed, October 13, 2010 2:14 amTo: felvtalk@felineleukemia.orgOK, I know I am going to get some really strong opinions on this one. What I really want is positive feedback from people who have mixed positives and negatives. My Fuji contacted her FeLV from her mom and it didn't show up on her initial test. We did not know she was positive until a mediastinal mass developed when she was almost a year old. She now receives chemo and is doing really well. Since her first treatment in July, she has never shown any signs of being sick. Today, I "rescued" a stray that I thought for certain would be positive. However, the initial test was negative. I have the cats separated and intend to vaccinate as soon as one of my vets gets the vaccine in. They have been introduced to each other and seem as though they will get along quite well. Fuji is not a fighter and I cannot see her biting him. Neither of my vets seem to think that mixing them will be a problem. I read the old threads and saw that many of you have mixed with great results. I did not see any stories of mixing where a vaccinated negative became positive. I'm looking for stories of success or failure. Please share your stories! Thanks,Melinda, Fuji and Shadow___Felvtalk mailing listFelvtalk@felineleukemia.orghttp://felineleukemia.org/mailman/listinfo/felvtalk_felineleukemia.org

Original KFC chicken
Cypro
Rescue Remedy in the water
Feliway plugins
I use and do all of this when kitties are not feeling good, not eating or just in a bad mood if they can't get their own way. My rescue and personalcats do not go outdoors.
Anyway, just my thoughtsgood luck!

BTW, if you get Rescue Remedy, you don't necessarily have toget it into his mouth - you can place a few drops on the skin on hisforehead or closer to the ear where the fur isn't so dense. Cypro is also used to enchance their appetite.
Cypro has many uses.

When I use Cypro I use pill pockets if I can't get them to take it by inserting it with my fingers.

Most will take it this way or you can mixed it in a little food and put it in his mouth.

I agree crating the kitty would be a good idea so he does appreciate being out.
I have feral and semi cats on my property when needed I will trap them and thengo into huge dog crates or wire cages until they are better. This certainly makes the process easier and better all around.
(They are all spayed/neutered of course)

When we first get feral cats, they either eat like there's no tomorrow, or they don't eat at all. By day two, I start fussing with different foods.they never go beyond that time. Might it help to keep him in a large dog crate? All he wants is to go outside, he perks up at the smell of air. this is against my better judgement, but he's so depressed and will die unless I get food down him. Every time I 'try' something, ie, pills, etc, he looks at me like I'm trying to kill him. I have all my kittens spayed/neutered when they are 2-3 pounds feral or not.
Normally they are about 10-12 weeks old at this time.
In male kittens if the testicles are showing this is great they can be done!
So this would be a good time to do it.

I totally agree it is the law here as well.
Being a rescue and non-profit we do all kittens after they reach the desired weight before they are adopted out. Matter of fact I do not list any kittens until they have been done. I have 3 litters going next week with their moms to be altered.
Yes, they do bounced back after have this done. It is harder the older the kitty.
My Vets tooare very experience doing these spay/neuters at young ages.
I have seen females come into heat at 41/1-5 months old then be pregnant at 6 months popping out kittens.
I've taken in several young moms in the last year more so than in the past years because of being too young to have kittens. People play off being stupid like they didn't know they could get pregnant at that age.
Male kittens and adultsdo try to go after them.
It's nature!

Even with a contract and a spay/neuter deposit it does not happen. Or it doesn't happen until after that little surprise litter from a 7 month old cat. Early age spay/neuter goes a long way towards reducing pet overpopulation. The areas that do very young spay/neuter amd have active feral cat programs have fewer kittens in shelters and higher adult cat adoptions. This is the same way it is done at the clinic I use for all my spays/neuters.
I volunteerwhen I can as I dowork closely with them.
All are treated equally if any problems arise it is taken care of ASAP by the staff. Everyone is monitored the whole time there. Thereis plenty on staff to make sure the kitties are doing okay at all times. Like what Susan stated they are continuously checking their respiration making sure they are cared for.
I agree they do more for them then the private Vets.
I know as I was a Vet Tech for many years and my adult daughter is one as wellshe states the same thing the clinic does wonderful things cats are given more care then those in private practice.
The kitties are also given some wet food when put back in their carriers, crates, or traps.
I commend them all for their jobs well done.

I have been to the "Chop Shops" this is not one.

I'm very pleased in what they do.
They have a mission that is to save any unwanted kittens born in this world.
By doing so they alter all cats and kittens for free or low cost.
If your a rescue this pertains to you as well.
If you do not have the funds they will do it for free. Providing you can show proof your getting some type of revenue from the state/federal.
In my case I pay for all my spays/neuters at a low cost.
All Feral kitties are done free in which I have done as well.
Kitties are given FVRCP vaccines along with the Rabies during this time.
Their fees are very reasonable. Have specials during different times of the year.
Many rescues from all over WA. take their kitties to them for spays/neuters.
They are open 7 days a week.
Even after the kitty leaves if any problems arise they request you contact them immediately so the proper care can be given.

Of course I have regular and specialized Vets that I'm grateful to have for other illnesses and diseases for the rescues and my own personal cats. They too have made comments stating that the clinic does wonderful things for the cats and kittens.
Would like to add they have received many awards locally and nationally for what they do.

I have included their web site for you all to view.

My station is right next to where the neuters are done. The aftercare is amazing. We have so many volunteers just checking respiration all the way through the clinic. Compared with other local clinics, I think we do batter "aftercare" for cats in recovery than any of the others and that's so important. Can't just put them in a cage or carrier after surgery, and leave them. I saw a wondrous image then of a place that's trouble-free Where all of us can meet again to spend eternity. I saw the most beautiful Rainbow, and on the other side Were meadows rich and beautiful -- lush and green and wide! And running through the meadows as far as the eye could see Were animals of every sort as healthy as could be! My own tired, failing body was fresh and healed and new And I wanted to go run with them, but I had something left to do. I needed to reach out to you, to tell you I'm alright That this place is truly wonderful, then a bright Glow pierced the night. 'Twas the Glow of many Candles shining bright and strong and bold And I knew then that it held your love in its brilliant shades of gold. He hadan aggressive lymphoma so there was no hope that he would get better or thathe could even be made more comfortable. He crashed at the beginning of thisweek and was having spasms that were making it very difficult for him toeat, drink or even to stand. He has been very unhappy and scared all weeklong. When I took Tweezer in he was extremely malnourished and had worms, earmites, goopy eyes and an upper respiratory infection. As his healthimproved he became such a happy cat! He was so happy to be alive, he alwayswanted to play and be loved. This is a you-tube link to a video I took ofhim a few months ago. Re: [Felvtalk] OT: HELP Mr.Whiskers

2011-02-10 Thread terrie
Hi all,
We were able to gather all the funds up for the visit to the Cardiologist.
Well, we are back home. I'm exhausted and such a rush of relief as well.
Mr. Whiskers is in pretty good health according to the Cardiologist.
They did Ultrasound, EKG, EEG, Echocardiogram, and check his blood again. When he was first seen he was anemic as this was due to fleas. Cardiologist stated that because Iwas quick intreating himright awayit had a lot to do with him getting better. Hehas recovered nicely as I gave him supplements for his anemic problem and picked out the fleas also put on flea meds. He had hot spots when rescued as this was treated as well.

So in the short time in rescue he has a came a long ways health wise.
(I hope this makes sense to you).

Here is the findings/special instructions:
Mr. Whiskers does not have underlying heart disease as the cause of the murmur (which comes and goes with excitement and a high heart rate), The murmur appears to be benign. Mr. Whiskers has a very small leak of the tricuspid valve - this may be normal for him or may be due to a mild abnormality that shouldn't worsen. In rare cases, this is an indication of severe heart disease that will develop (this cannot be predicted). If an abnormal rhythm is heard in the future, then Mr. Whiskers should be re-evaluated, otherwise at this time, he does not have evidence of heart disease.
I'm so relieved about this.

While he was there all the staff fell in love with him and his big blue eyes.Everyone therestated he was a peoples'cat. They wanted to take him home but they knew better.

I'm very impressed with this clinic/hospital. Very nice atmosphere and cleannot dinghy looking. I know some places you go to the rooms are puny not there it's not. They have refreshments on hand available to their clients. Very caring bunch of people on staff.
They have many Vets on hand for many types of diseases and specialties. They treat fromrodents all the way up to livestock and marine life. They even have an ambulance on hand if needed.
(Yes, nice andI saw it).
Also,24 hour emergency services. If I need to take a rescue or personal I will gothrough theiremergency care.
They work with rescues and give discounts. I told them I would help advertise getting them out there. Their office has only been there for 3 years. So it is still somewhat new.
Since I told them I had not heard of them they explained this to me. I told them I get tired running all over the place to different Vets that do different things. Thankful they are closer to me than the others. The costs are the same too.

I certainly recommend them toeveryone regardless of where you live in WA. It's worth the drive!

Re: [Felvtalk] Thank Goodness For This Group!

2011-02-27 Thread terrie
Morning everyone,
I totally agree with what you have posted. This indeed is a special group of people. I've been on this group since 2000 or maybe earlier can't remember.
There has always been support whether it was about our felv kitties or off the topic.

I have had not had any positive kitties in a few years. The last of my old herd of kitties passed away from old age of 22 years back in March of last year. She lived with my Taz before he died. When I mean the herd they all lived with Taz and none ever contracted felv. (8 kitties) They all slept, played, ate out of the same dishes, and bathe each other.

I have to say I've known about FELV since the late 60's. This was because my parents were reputable breeders and showed their kitties.
I lost my very first felv kitty in 1974 to FELV. He was only 3 years old.
He too was a Siamese/Ragdoll. I remember all too well of what he had gone through.
My parents went to the dog pound (this was they were called back then) and seen a litter of mixedSiamese kittens that were only about 5 weeks old. They end up bringing them all home. Even though they went looking for a dog to add to the family.
When the kittenswere old enough my parents had them tested and vaccinated but unfortunately the one I love had FELV the others remained negative all their lives. Yes, my parents kept these kittens all the way up to their passing. They lived for many years.
Back then there wasn't any type of protocol. You just did the best you could do for felv kitties by giving them the best food and love. There was not the assortment of food back then like it is now.
The Vets back then were really naive and many put down kitties that had felv.
Because people like us that are persisted in finding more ways to help our kitties is the reason why there is more information than ever.
I'm just like many of you I hate this damn disease as well. It is so unfair. :(
I do hope and pray the cure will be found soon.
You are all in my thoughts and prayers each day!
I'm so sorry for those of you with your recentlosses. It's not easy to lose our precious furkids but in time it becomes a memory. As we cherish the time they had with us and try to remember the good.
Ido hope when the cure is found I'm still alive so I can celebrate and say they didn't die in vain. I've always been told there is a purpose for everything even though we may not understand it. Whether it may be good, bad, like or disike it.
Bless you all!

Trying different treatments or none-we are all the same. Getting comfort or condolences...it's a hard journey. I can say that I have tried different things with my 6-Spent a huge fortune-so far lost 5 in 2 yrs and now having to watch Rosie in a downward spiral. Nothing has worked to save mine, maybe prolonged their lives by what...minutes, days, months-I don't know. Two and a half years ago, I had never heard of this damn disease-maybe because I hadn't had a cat in over a decade, just Aussies and horses. God bless the really special people who take in positive kitties knowing there is heartache up the road, but have saved them from being euthanized because of a positive test-they're not all accurate. I am rambling, I am sad-but so grateful for all the shoulders to cry on. Every time I log on, more babies have gone to the bridge, finally free to play together and wait for us. [Felvtalk] Time to step down from rescuing for a time being.

2011-03-28 Thread terrie

Hi all,
I'm taking some time off from rescue due to my husband's illness. He has liver failure and is not a candidate for a transplant. He has been hospitalized2 times this monthand once last month he was placed into a skill nursing facility since the 18th of February after the first trip to the hospital.
He is in the end final stage of his disease his liver has stopped working.
Can die at any given time. He is being given all the pain meds he wants for comfort so he will most likely fall asleep an never wake up again.
I want to make myself available at all times for him.
He is only 64 years old... I know to some of you that may sound old but it isn't really.
Hospice has been part of this as well to help me cope with all of this.Hospice isavailable to me 24 hours a day.

Sincerely,
Terrie

Hi everyone,
I want to thank you all for your words of encouragements, cards, and donations.
It meant a lot to me during this time of my loss of my husband. It has been hard on me because I missed him so much. I'm still grieving but it will get better in time.
Thankfully, I have some money set aside for the regular household finances as his Teamster benefits won't kick in for another 3 weels or so.
Your "Donations" will use for cat food, litter, antibiotics, spays/neuters, and treats for the kitties in rescue. Regardless of how much you sent whether it was $1.00-$100.00to Tazzy's itis very much appreciated.
Thank you again!

With Love,

Original Message Subject: Re: [Felvtalk] DexterFrom: Ben Williams drsiebl...@gmail.comDate: Wed, July 06, 2011 7:46 amTo: felvtalk@felineleukemia.orgI'd like to start off this message by thanking all of you for your kindwords regarding Dexter over the past few days - - my wife and I have sharedand appreciated every one of the emails - it's meant a lot to us.Unfortunately, this morning has proven to be heartbreaking to us both - wereceived a call first thing this morning from East Dallas Animal Clinic'sDr. Ken Cantrell that Dexter's condition had worsened over the course of thenight. After picking Dex up from the Emergency clinic yesterday morning, weimmediately took him to Dr. Wright at Lakewood Vet Center. Dr. Wright hasbeen on vacation since last week and we were told that he would be backyesterday morning - but he hadn't yet returned. I took Dexter to see him onthree occasions last week for his lymphocyte T-Cell Immunomodulatorinjections, but was only able to see him that Monday. When we took Dex inon Friday when the swelling of his feet and face had begun, we were given noadvice by his staff who were unable to do anything other than give Dex hisshot and usher us out the door. They are all very caring people and I don'tblame them for anything, but I feel that any vet who runs a practice wherehe is the only doctor on staff, should do a bit more to keep his patientsinformed about his availability - that way precious minutes or hours or daysaren't wasted waiting for him to return. Fortunately, several weeks ago, when trying to convince Dr. Wright to order the LTCI treatment (which tookhim over a week to do) I was referred to the East Dallas Animal Clinic bythe LTCI folks - they had used the medication before. East Dallas AnimalClinic is a wonderful place. We've worked with Dr. Ellsworth and Dr.Cantrell there - - they are both compassionate and make a point of takingcalls from concerned pet owners. They have both been wonderful to work withand have been open to taking every conceivable avenue with Dex's treatment.I only wish we had been seeing them from the start. We rushed Dex to themyesterday morning as soon as it became clear that Dr. Wright wouldn't bereturning. Again, I don't blame Dr. Wright, but when we took Dexter in forhis checkup three weeks ago and Dr. Wright informed us that anemia had setin, his advice was to "take him home and make him comfortable." A weekpassed as I researched and tried to communicate with him about alternatetreatments and off-label meds. When you factor in that week and the week hetook to order the LTCI meds, that's two out of the last three weeks whereDex had little treatment. Again, why the difficulty in getting anythingdone for Dex? East Dallas, however, fit Dex in on the first day we spokewith him and started him on Acemannan injections. They had two remainingdoses remaining of that drug; a drug that was very beneficial to Dex lastyear when he was first diagnosed. they sacrificed those 2 doses for Dexwithout question - had I gone to them earlier, perhaps it would have hadmore effect on him. Regardless, Dex seemed to make improvements while onImmunoregulin, LCTI and the acemannan. FeLV and FIV are horrible diseases, though, and I felt like there was something always sneaking up on Dex whilewe treated him. We seemed to reverse the anemia, but his Lymph nodes wereswelling. Some days they would go down, other days, they would blow up.When the mystery feet and face swelling started last week, he even respondedwell with benadryl. That thing sneaking up on Dexter? Full blown cancer -it wasn't just in his lymph nodes, it was in his liver and spleen - it hadprobably made his heart swell. His breathing was becoming more and morelabored and we struggled with the decision of when Dexter was in too muchpain to continue. Yesterday, Dr. Cantrell started chemotherapy on Dex, aswell as steroids. He seemed to tolerate the meds well, but over the courseof the night, he became more jaundiced and vomited, while his bodytemperature dropped to 94

[Felvtalk] Great Topic: Husbands and cats

2011-07-10 Thread terrie
LOLI had to respond to this as well.
In the early years my late husband was a dog man and tolerated cats. Within 2 years I converted him into a cat man. Don't get me wrong he still loved dogs but like cats better because they were more personable. We are dog owners too. Over the course of years he had a few personal kitties. One is still with me. He is a 14 year old Balinese named Vinnie.
When my husband became ill I took Vinnie to the skilled nursing facility to visit my late husband before he died. Vinnie also knew when he died too. Which spooked me sort of. Vinnie was sleeping then all the sudden woke up, started meowing, paced the floor a bit then went back to sleep. Within minutes the facility called me and told me my husband had passed away at 4:30 am (03/31/2011).
So I know animals havesome sort ofconnection with us humans when they are close like these two. When I got to the facility and told my daughter this she said she isn't surprised by this. Vinnie and my late husband were very close like 2 peas in a pod. My husband always called him his buddy and partner.
He had also said over the course of the years he wanted to come back as one of my cats because they were spoiled and taken care of if it is possible. Whether they were rescues or personal kitties. I do know he said he couldn't wait to see the original "Taz" that had passed back in 2002.
Very few men would tolerate or care for the animals I had in rescue over the years. He would care for cats and kittenslike feeding, doing litter boxes, medicate if needed, would clean up hair balls. The one thing that would cracked me up is if a cat/kitten puked he would let me know and ask me to look at it or inspect to make sure it was okay. This was to make sure it was normal looking. The one thing he couldn't deal with was blood from animals. Humans he didn't care except for his loved ones.
He had a great love for animals especially for those that couldn't fend for themselves.
My husband was a one of a kind man and missed greatly by us.

Thanks for reading felt I needed to let others know from my end.

Also would like to add he did kiss, pacifythe cats/kittens, give special kitty treats, and baby talk to them. When it was bedtime for him he would ask me to move the cats from his side of the bed or he would sleep on my side so he wouldn't disturb the kitties. It was like this on the living room furniture as well. Husband would sit elsewhere wouldn't move them. If he had something on his dinner plate he would share it with the kitties too.
I used to tease him about this. Where as myself I would move the kitties so I could sit or lay in bed. I knew they would come back because in the mornings I feel like a pretzel when I woke up.

When I start weaning my kittens from the moms if they haven't already done so this is their first food. I give them both wet and dry food as much as they want at all times.
I highly recommend this this food as they have different stages for kittens, breeds, and differenthealth issuesfor kitties.

She didn't say anything about the soreon her tongue, but the sniffles and sneezes have gotten so much better intwo days also. She's on antibiotics to help clear that all up and she takesit like a trooper. She is such a different, happier little girl! We did theIFA test, should get the results in a few days. I know, might be a bit tooearly for it, but I wanted to really check. As for her food, she's eating Royal Canin Baby Cat Instinctive. I'm alreadygoing to have to go get her more. And we also feed her this gel twice a day.I can't remember what it's called right now, got it from the vet, issupposed to help her immune system. Oh! She's gained 3 oz in two days also! She's a pig. Haha.I'm glad I took her into a second vet. Having that second opinion helps, andthey didn't completely sugar coat everything. I know I'm going to getattached to her, already am. Re: [Felvtalk] No Good Rotten People!

2011-08-05 Thread terrie
Hi all,
Sorry if this is long.

I've been on this group/listfor a very long time.
Seen many members come and go over the course of time byexpressing their opinions that others didn't approve. I continue to stay on for support and to help others if I can off the group/list.
However, I do agree with Kelley. There are some nasty rescues out there. They are all over.

I've been in rescue for over 30 years.
So this pretty much explains what I've seen, heard, and been involved withover time.

My first real personal kitty had FELV as he died in 1975 to secondary complications.
This goes back into time 1972.Even though growing up we had other animals and my parents were reputable breeders of cats/dogs/horses/cattle.
I wanted to help a kitten that was doom to die. I remember, calling my Dad and crying they couldn't do this to the baby. He came by and got the kitten for me.
Anyway, the kitty was a 5 week old Siamese mix kitten that was dumped at the "Dog Pound" thisis what they were called back then.Theyhad revolving doors anyone was able to walk in.
Attitudes were bad back then by the staff.
What I saw was a status ego or it was just a jobeither they were burned out, or didn't care it was a paycheck.
After what I saw growing up I decided to try and save as many as I could.
It is unfortunate many sheltersare still like this!

Then another special Siamese kitten came along and stoled my heart.
He too was FELV.
He is the reasonhow my rescuefinally got a name. "Tazzy" so he did not die in vain. His memory is kept alive by rescuing, TNR,and helping others most importantly the kittiesgo to good homes.
I still rescue both negative and positive FELV Siamese kitties. Even though I am getting older...lol
Also, been doing hoarding situations a bit in the last few years. Because reality is if I or my connections don't do something most will be euthanized by the city/county shelters.
They want to make money not to lose it.

It's okay to voice your opinions and air your beef when needed.
Most of us understand and it shouldn't be taken seriously.
If we didn't care we wouldn't react like this!

I hope what I'm saying makes sense.

There'salways someone ready to kick you when you're down, say you are not doingsomething right because you aren't doing what they would do, etc etc etc.I've seen rescue groups purposely try to run other rescue groups out ofrescue. (This is not directed towards anyone here, just what I thinkwhenever I see an "I hate people" thread.) In contrast, MOST of my adoptershave been lovely people. We did have a couple who moved to NYC and had ababy who was allergic to the cats (and you can ask all the questions on aform you want, when it comes down to it you don't know what people will do)and they bothered to contact us instead of sending the cats off to thepound. We made arrangements for them to be picked up (they paid half) anddelivered back to us safely.Felvtalk mailing listFelvtalk@felineleukemia.orghttp://felineleukemia.org/mailman/listinfo/felvtalk_felineleukemia.org

A Trip to Costco Yesterday I was at my local COSTCO buying a large bag of Purina dog chow for my loyal pet, Jake, the Wonder Dog and was in the check-out line when a woman behind me asked if I had a dog. What did she think I had, an elephant? So since I'm retired and have little to do, on impulse I told her that no, I didn't have a dog, I was starting the Purina Diet again. I added that I probably shouldn't, because I ended up in the hospital last time, but that I'd lost 50 pounds before I awakened in an intensive care ward with tubes coming out of most of my orifices and IVs in both arms. I told her that it was essentially a Perfect Diet and that the way that it works is, to load your pants pockets with Purina Nuggets and simply eat one or two every time you feel hungry. The food is nutritionally complete so it works well and I was going to try it again. (I have to mention here that practically everyone in line was now enthralled with my story.) Horrified, she asked if I ended up in intensive care, because the dog food poisoned me. I told her no, I stepped off a curb to sniff a poodle's ass and a car hit me. I thought the guy behind her was going to have a heart attack he was laughing so hard. Costco won't let me shop there anymore.

Re: [Felvtalk] FeLV+ and Cigarette Smoke

2011-09-21 Thread terrie
Hi all,
Well here is my 2 cents worth!
I'm a smoker have been for 40 years. I do not smoke directly in front of my cats/kittens. My personal kitties have never gotten sick or develop cancers from smoke this includes my FELV kitties.
I've been adopting cats/kittens for over 30 years to both non-smokers and smokers. I have to say my smokers take better care of their kitties than non-smokers that have small children. As I've been to their homes and seen how clean they were. I've have repeat adopters as their kitties didn't die to cancers.
Actually, lived fairly long lives. The kitties had the best in medical as well.
So I do not discriminate adopters that smoke.

I agree with Susan Hoffman on her posting.

My suggestion is if you don't want to adopt to people that smoke. Be up front with them about it.
Also, if your a rescue/shelter put it in your rules and guidelines on your applications that you don't adopt your kitties to smokers.
This way the adopter doesn't feel bad or have their heart set on the kitty.
Regardless whether the kitty is Negative, FELV, FIV, or both.

Hi,

We have someone interested in adopting our FeLV+ boy and it sounds like a great home, but the gentleman smokes. Does anyone know if this would be a considerable risk for a FeLV cat? I know smoke isn't good for humans or cats, but I'm wondering if the FeLV would complicate matters. Other than that, it sounds like a great home. He'd be a companion to a homebound gentleman who's looking for company.

Thanks for your time and input.

Please DO NOT WORRY – if she or “husband” are FIV+, the kittens will be just fine!
Your vet knows NOTHING about FIV! It’s a lot different than FeLV
I can guarantee that they will be fine.
DO NOT ABORT THIS LATE – each baby has to be taken out and killed!
I don’t have time to write now, but I can e-mail you personally later, if that’s OK!
I have had dozens of FIV mothers whose babies were ALL fine!

2012-04-28 Thread terrie
Maureen,
She could be a CH Kitty..."Cerebellar Hypoplasia" this can happen in both cats and dogs at a young age. Some are born with it. It is a Brain Neuro issue. It can affect anykitty whether they are FELV or not.
I have 2 kitties that have this as they are Siamese. One is about 6-7 months old and the other is a senior.
You can also go to facebook and look this up under this. (Cerebellar Hypoplasia Kitties) I'm on the group as well. It will give you more details. There is help and a great deal of knowledge.
You can google this as well.
My suggestion is to take the kitty to the Vet for blood-work. If the blood-work comes back clean ask your Vet about this. A good Vet will make it more understanding for you.
Some animal shelters will euthanized both kittens/cats/puppies/dogs that have this. They don't want to deal with a special needs animal.
My kitties came from out of state shelters.
These animals can live very full lives. They just aren't normal they can eat, play, sleep, and use the potty like others but slower with handicaps.

Original Message Subject: [Felvtalk] What_could_it_be?From: molvey...@hotmail.com molvey...@hotmail.comDate: Sat, April 28, 2012 4:51 amTo: felvtalk@felineleukemia.orgI have a FeLV kitten that I'm fostering. She's six or seven months old. She's the one I emailed about a couple months ago with uveitis. The uveitis never has completely cleared up. But now I'm not sure what's going on. Her back legs are kind of wobbly. It's not bad enough that my husband has noticed yet, but I can see it. It's like she's slightly drunk. She's walking okay with the front legs but her back legs give way a little or something when she's walking. She's eating and going to the bathroom. She doesn't run around and play as much as the other cats do, but never really has. She's just a real mellow and loving kitten and I just thought that must be why she's not as playful. I'm not sure though. She's not growing a lot too. The other kitten her age, not related, has grown much faster than she has.So any ideas? Why do you guys think she's started getting wobbly in the back legs. She can still jump on things but not as sure-footed as the others. I don't know if her muscles are getting weak or if she's anemic or what. A couple months ago her bloodwork at the vet's office was okay. I assume this is FeLV related but before I go to the vet I'd like to be prepared and have some ideas of what's going on.MaureenSent from my HTC Inspire™ 4G on ATT

It is NOT a politics, hunting, personal soapbox, etc. list. We have a well-defined mission here to discuss FeLV. All of these other topics need to be taken to forums where such topics are discussed. I would hate to have to suspend this list because some want to ignore or bring their own interpretations into my gentle reminder about OT posting here. But, if suspending this list for a short time is the only way to stop the continuation of the off-topic chatter, I will have to do so. Re: [Felvtalk] Nitnoy and felv

2012-10-15 Thread terrie
Oh my heart is aching for your loss of precious Nitnoy!
Have to admit I had tears in my eyes when I read this.
I've been on this group/list for many years as I'm a old timer. Seen many come and go but there are some stories of a kitty's life that grips my heart..and this is one of them!

You sound like me there was nolimit on costs. I spent thousands of dollars to try to help and make my late Taz comfortable.
You had the comfort of your furbaby pass in your arms at home! She knew you loved her and bless you for giving her the chance at life even though it was short.
I know you are hurting and it is never easy to lose a precious life that is close to our heart. There is never enough words to express my thoughtsbut let it be known you are in myprayers.

I didn't have the choice as Taz just had surgery made it through the worst part with a tumor removal.
(pretty extensiveprocedure to remove a tumor above his eye that was attached to his skull)
but wouldn't wake up.
So I had to let him go 6 hours after surgery :(
Still to this day it still hurts but I'm in control of my loss of him. I lost him January 2002
I almost left animal rescue because he was my life and in my heart. My late husband said to take the negative and turn it into positive. At first I was like what the hell...but then it started to fall in place for me after one year.
So today my rescue is ran solely on his legacy.Taz had a great impact on my life and many rescue kitties.
He gave a new meaning if this makes sense. I've been in animal rescue for 35 years.
His story is told at the website below.

Original Message Subject: [Felvtalk] Nitnoy and felvFrom: dlg...@windstream.netDate: Mon, October 15, 2012 3:07 pmTo: felvtalk@felineleukemia.orgMy Nitnoy crossed over today at 12:45. She had been with me since 2008, survived a raccoon biting of her tail and being FELV +. There was nothing to idicate whaat was going on. During the holidays, she was not doing well so took her to ER. They did x-rays and complete bloodwork. I had told them she was FELV+ but they did not seem upset that she was just 1 point low on red and white cells. After the holiday, I took her to my vet as she was not improving, had not passed urine or stool. First thing he did was look at her anal glands. They were impacted and infected. He cleaned them out and gave her Covina and we brought home Orbax to be given once daily. Everything was much better, she was back to her self. Then Friday, she began hiding, not eating or drinking so took her to vet on Saturday. ONE THING SHE DID THAT STRUCK ME ODD - SHE TRIED TO EAT THE FIRBARK THAT MY ORCHIDS ARE PLANTED IN. Sat when we got to vet, my dr was not there, but his wife (also a vet) was. She said her lymph glands were slightly enlarged and gums very pale. We did another blood panel. Her white cells were .98 and her red blood cells were 3.2. Kidney and liver functions were normal as were creatine and bun. We thought about going to ER for transfusion, but she would have to stay over the weekend in a cage and we decided the stress would outweigh any good it might do plus her body might just kill the new blood and we would be right back where we started plus stress. Again, gave Covina shot and started again on Orbax. I wanted to try a tonic that has worked wonders on cancers, etc. Vet said ok but keep a record of what I did in case it worked. She actually seemed to improve. I was feeding with an eye dropper aruond 50 ml every hour (i can ad mixed with 3 cans hot water so she could swallow and also to egt fluids into her. She got around 50ml of tonic also. She took a turn for the worse this am at 3:30, but then seemed to get better. She was breathing easier, heart was strong and she responded to my voice and touch. By 12:45, she had gone completely the opposite direction. I was holding her aganst me as she seemed to like the body warmth when she gasped 3 or 4 times and the light in her eyes went out. I knew she was going and I told her it was all right. Little _Miya Chan_ died unexpectedly Friday morning. Apparently she was in kidney failure, according to the Vet. Didn’t expect her to go so soon. Lovely brushed coat calico, rehabilitated feral who loved sleeping on the foot of my bed and would raise up her head and close her eyes when I bent to kiss the top of her head. May she rest peacefully and pain free, and may we meet again.
Your good thoughts, positive energy and prayers for Miya are appreciated.
