Re: [Finale] Hyperscribe Transcription, Quantization, Midi-files

2011-03-23 Thread Bob Morabito

Hi Ben--

Im very familiar with this problem, and so is MakeMusic--I spent a
very long time years ago with a tech there, and then it was upgraded
to a notation specialist to show them, and prove all these problems,
which they finally admitted to, and have done nothing about..and
probably wont.

I was trying to import midi files of a complex nature, and have
Finale notate them. They claimed that the problem seems to be in
Include voice 2 not being sufficient and more voices are needed-- a
feature request was submitted. Finale' s quantization would
truncate durations, and give repeated notes, etc..It was really unusable.

Eventually because of this and other problems, I was offered my money
back, and eventually started using Sibelius.

Thanks Bob Morabito

PS submit this problem to tech support there--maybe someday they'll
address it.

finale 1.0 in the late '80's (for $1,000 no less.) Since then I've
upgraded

several times to Finale 2010, and have struggled to keep up with the
changes. My question involves problems I continue to have with
Hyperscribe
transcription, and wonder if I've missed something through the
decades. In

a nutshell, here's the issue:

I typically write compositions using Finale's speedy entry tool. I
find
that's the most precise way to enter music, certainly quicker than
editing
hyperscribe entries. When the piece is finished I save it as a
standard
midi file to MOTU's Digital Performer, because of its more
sophisticated
play-back and sound editing files. (My experience is that human
playback
doesn't have the requisite precision required for effective
playback of what

I intended.)

Now that Finale has Garritan Instruments - which are much better
and more
manipulatable than my synth sounds -- I would like to save those
DP files

to Finale, and capture everything DP did, including tempo and volume
adjustments, etc. So I save a DP file as a Standard Midi file and
open it

in Finale. Even though this file was originally created in Finale, it
requires quantization.

My files are relatively complex, typically requiring mixed
quantization
settings, with a resolution to the 32nd note and rarely 64ths.
The Finale
transcription and playback are always poor, with all the extra
rests, rhythm

anomalies and the like.

Am I missing something? Is there an editing or quantization step
I'm not

using properly? I have tried the tutorials. Thanks, Ben

I have seen this book, both when it
was being written, and on a recent trip to the UK.
(Faber, who publish this book, are my publishers).

Elaine Gould is a super, super fussy editor, which is
exactly what is required of course from such a
position. This is her labour of love covering about 20
years or so of work, if I remember correctly.

It's a really comprehensive volume. It's not like what I
remember of the Read book so much, i.e. in terms of being
mostly about what symbols etc. to use, but also like the Ted
Ross book.

I thoroughly recommend this book - in fact I have made all
my students buy it and have ordered it myself.

Such volumes don't come around very often.

Perhaps the easiest thing to see is the PDF with sample
pages. I have it on my site at http://www.hindson.com.au/bb/

Faber have a special deal going at the moment whereby you
can save $$/££ before 31 Dec 2010. Details are in
the PDF. For the UK the brochure is at: http://

have you tried the Notes and Rests (Show) Plug-in?

Bob Morabito

What it does

Use the Selection Tool to select a region from which you wish to
hide or show notes from all entries, then choose the Notes and
Rests (Hide) or Notes and Rests (Show) command from the Menu. The
plug-in allows you to hide all notes and rests in the current

This plug-in is equivalent to pressing “O” in Speedy Entry to hide

Hidden entries are not printed and do not play back, but they can
be used to influence the positioning of other musical items. A
typical usage is to hide rests in contrapuntal keyboard music.

Re: [Finale] grey notation

Hi John--

I believe this is it--

http://tinyurl.com/2dhmtk5

Valuable information to the readings of the autograph score of the
Missa can be drawn from the “Dresden parts” of 1733, largely
written by Bach himself. The different readings of the parts are
clearly differentiated from the readings of the autograph score by
the use of passages printed in grey.

Also, clcik on the image.

elements in grey as well: tempo marking, selected voice names, and
figured bass numbers. I know that Finale can allow for grey colored
noteheads, but can it also do stems and beams? Is there a plugin

It looked really nice.

Nice or not, was there any explanation of WHY they greyed out some
parts? Seems rather strange.

Where I'm most in need of advice is with regard to the keyboard

Re: [Finale] O.T. Secco recitatives

2010-05-27 Thread Bob Morabito

Im not so sure this is the case-

in my experience the exposure young people have to advanced music in
films is in drips and drabs, used very sparingly--
it seemingly being used mainly, and almost solely in the capacity of
'sound effects', to alert the audience that someone is
psychologically imbalanced, or drugs are involved, or something
bizarrely scary is about to happen...etc..

or maybe at times to denote frenzied excitement.

It seems its the ONLY way they know atonal music.

And judging by my own kids, and those that I know they STILL have the
same difficulty the older folks have with this non tonal music, in
the concert setting, or listening to entire recordings.

They cant, or wont do it.

This kind of music hasnt become a real part of the vocabulary of film
scores..its more like phrases borrowed from a foreign language thrown
in here and there. sparingly, for said sound effect.

And its sad that its this way.

difficulty with non-tonal music -- they've been hearing it their
whole lives and have a framework of meaning in which to interpret it.

Hi Andrew-

According to this, you have the latest version ot Safari(1.3.2) that

As far as IE for Mac, according to this, Version 5.2.3, June 16,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/
Internet_Explorer_for_Mac#Internet_Explorer_5_Macintosh_Edition

Firefox 2 requires Mac OS X 10.2 or later; 3 requires 10.4 or later.

To download previous versions:

ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/

Previous versions

Previous versions of Firefox have public security problems. You could
be exposed to viruses, phishing, and other attacks by running old
versions.

To find a previous version:
Go to the Mozilla FTP server.
Choose the version you want.
Choose the mac/ folder
Choose your language. en-US is US English.
Choose the file that does not end in .asc. The download will then start.
Once the file is downloaded, install it.
After downgrading, if you intend to stay with that version, you will
need to turn off Software Update. It is highly recommended that you
try new versions of Firefox as they're released to see if they solve
your problem.

[Finale] Problem with Finale's File Info

2009-12-01 Thread Bob Morabito

I recently had a problem with fonts..MM helped with that--

but while I was looking at that file I noticed in a piece with 124
measures, that using the Playback Controls, and the measure Counter.I
couldn't set a measure past measure 11 (lets say Measure 50) and start

playback at that measure...

It wouldn't start playback at any measure past 11.

The solution given to me was to save it and then open as XML..this
worked, but I pressed as to WHY it happened.

MM said I had used an old template--and looking at the File iInfo in
Fin for what I had sent them. its listed as being created in 2006
with a versions of Finale I NEVER owned, or used..2006d.r1. And the
modified date is in 2007..
(The Regular Finders Get Info, however is correct-Nov.16, 2009,
which is when i contacted MM about the fonts.)

They want me to reinstall Fin..before i do that any suggestions I
could try with this?

I guess I'll have to WRESTLE with that thought for MANY years to

I should have included it as Matthew asked for:

(Particularly important works?)

My bad :)

Bob

PS: Yes, that momentous occasion was actually mentioned on the page
in Wikipedia I referenced--

Under References in Popular Culture..

I now include the rest for the sake of completeness, lest I be PINNED
down again for lacking it:):

The melody has also been referenced in popular culture, often being
used in soundtracks to horror films.

A version of Dies Irae was used in WWE/WWF's WrestleMania XIV
during the video package to promote the buildup to The Undertaker
and Kane's historic first match against one another.

The musical Sweeney Todd, the Demon Barber of Fleet Street by
Stephen Sondheim contains several variations of the Dies Irae
throughout its score, most notably in the recurrent Ballad of
Sweeney Todd,[5] and as part of the underscoring in the climactic
Epiphany.

Lacrimosa by singer/songwriter Regina Spektor centers around the
eighteenth stanza of the poem. The song is written from the point
of view of Icarus, the son of Daedalus from Greek mythology, as he
is falling to the earth.

A version of Dies Irae named Requiem Nitachou K.626 is used for
Wolfgang Krauser in the Fatal Fury series by SNK,now SNK Playmore.

In Monty Python and the Holy Grail, the last stanza (Pie Jesu
Domine, dona eis requiem) is chanted by monks hitting themselves
with boards.

A japanese Anime called Death Note features Dies Irae's first two
stanzas as the lyrics of the theme of the Death Note with
orchestral music in the background.

I had always assumed that there was some correspondence between

particular basis for the assumption), and only found out recently
that Finale playback output seems to be monaural, rather than stereo.

Now, I've already figured out how to achieve a work around, to
simulate a stereo recording, but I'm curious to know whether there
is some MIDI (or VST) controller setting which could be assigned to
an expression, which would direct MIDI channel 2 to the left stereo
channel, with a similar expression with different parameters would
assign MIDI channel 1 to the right stereo channel.

Re: [Finale] Vile Midi Export from Finale

2009-01-22 Thread Bob Morabito

Hi Earl--

There's also a problem with using Finale Notepad, as I tried that
also, under the same circumstances:)

You cant quantize smaller than a 32nd, without getting an error
message, and there's no place to enter EDU's.

MM support conforms this problem, and also states:

a version with a fix for this issue may not be available for some
time. I have confirmed that this is not an issue in Finale 2009

I can confirm this defect and have notified our engineers. This is
a problem with the Macintosh version of NotePad, and is also an
issue in the latest version of Finale NotePad (version 2009).

Also, I still am not able to tell,:

1)if you have the CORRECT notation on screen, and it then exports a
Midi file with the truncated durations (any repeated notes?),

or
2) if its IMPORTED wrongly and the truncated durations and repeated
notes DO show up on your screen, and thus are in your exported midi
file..

If its the latter, I can suggest a set of settings that have greatly
reduced (and in some instances totally removed) the truncated
durations/repeated notes problem for me, and have posted them here
before.

Please let me know..

I find it unconscionable that this has been allowed to continue
thru the

eons that Finale has been around

Notation of Midi files sadly isn't high on ANYONES priority list.,
but this truncated durations/repeated notes problem is really a
shame, and a deal breaker.

Thanks Bob

Hi Earl--I went into this in great detail with MM support, and then
their Notation specialist, a long while ago, for many weeks-but this
happened to me with Midi IMPORT.
And with me, the truncated durations resulted in repeated notes.

The problem as they insist, is in include voice two--that had to be
checked,
and I had to submit a feature request for 3 or more voices--

and the way it is now, it ruins a good job Finale can sometimes do in
importing midi files.-
but again, mine was to do with importing midi files, and the repeated
notes, and truncations did show up in FIns onscreen notation and in
the exported midi file..

Coincidentally, Im in contact with them again, about this stuff--

and the ONLY thing the sup'v says thats needed to export a midi file
of FInales on screen notation is to have HP OFF.

NOTHING else-( I had thought those playback options had to be
unchecked, but he claims not_)

Re: [Finale] Help Please: Midi Export from Finale as Notated

2009-01-21 Thread Bob Morabito

Re: [Finale] human playback for swing 16th's?

2009-01-21 Thread Bob Morabito
Hi Mark--I know you asked for easy, hope this helps--this is straight
from the 2008 manual..

Hope this helps--
Bob Morabito
===

Swing Playback

To create swing playback (for the entire piece)

This method is for generating swing feel from an otherwise “straight”
score. (If you’ve used HyperScribe to record a performance, you can
“capture” the swing feel. Make sure Retain Note Durations is checked
in More Quantization Settings and Play Recorded Note Durations is
checked in Playback/Record Options (see Document Menu). When you
playback, you’ll hear the music with your original feel, including
swing, played back.)

Note that you can also apply a Swing feel using the Jazz Human
Playback Style which can be configured in the Playback Controls.

Swing is not available with all Human Playback styles.

   1. From the Window Menu, choose Playback Controls. Playback
Controls appears.
   2. Click the expand arrow. The Playback Settings dialog box
appears Controls expands, offering additional controls.

   3. From the Swing popup menu, choose Standard.
   4. Click on Play.
-

To create swing playback (for sections of the piece)

Use the Apply Human Playback plug-in to apply Human Playback’s swing
interpretation to a region of your score. To define swing manually
with the Selection Tool, do the following:

   1. Choose the Selection Tool image\Selection_Tool.gif.
   2. Select a region of measures.
   3. From the Plug-ins Menu, choose Playback, then Apply Human
Playback. The Apply Human Playback dialog box appears.
   4. From the Apply a Defined Style, choose Jazz (or another style
that incorporates swing).
   5. Choose Apply Specific Elements and click the Select button.
The More Settings dialog box appears.

   6. From the Swing popup menu, select the desired swing percentage.
   7. Click OK and then Apply. Swing playback has been applied to
the selected region. Playback the score to review the results.

To create swing playback (for sections of the piece) Expression Tool
method

Note: In order to apply swing playback with an expression, Human
Playback must be set to None.

   1. Click the Expression Tool image\Expression_Tool.gif. If you
haven’t yet placed the marking in the score, double-click any note or
measure. When the Expression Selection dialog box appears, click the
desired marking, click Edit, and then skip to the instruction marked
by the asterisk (*).
   2. Click the measure or note to which the tempo marking was
attached. Its handle appears.
   3. Option-double-click the handle. The Text Expression Designer
dialog box appears.

   4. Click the Playback/Record Options. The playback options appear.
   5. From the Type popup menu, choose Swing; then enter a number in
the Set to Value box or select a choice from the Swing popup menu.
The number you type into the box indicates a percentage of swing. The
larger the percentage of swing, the more delay before the second note.
   6. Click OK (or press return). Any time Finale encounters the
expression you’ve just defined when it plays back your score, the
playback will change to reflect the expression’s swing definition.

-

To create swing playback (for sections of the piece) MIDI Tool method

Note: In order to apply swing playback with the MIDI Tool, Human
Playback must be set to None.

   1. Click the MIDI Tool image\MIDI_Tool.gif. Select the region
where you want the playback to have a swing feel. You can select one
measure by clicking, additional measures by shift-clicking, a
screenful by drag-enclosing, an entire staff by clicking to the left
of it, or the entire piece by choosing Select All from the Edit Menu.

   2. From the MIDI Tool Menu, choose Note Durations.
   3. From the MIDI Tool Menu, choose Alter Feel. Type 171 into the
Backbeats By” text box. If you enter a number larger than 171, your
swing effect approaches a dotted-eighth/sixteenth feel, which is
useful in slower swing tempos; if you enter a number smaller than
171, the swing effect approaches an even-eighth-note feel, which
might be better at faster tempos.
   4. Click OK (or press return). When you play back the selected
region, you’ll hear genuine swing—Finale is playing the second eighth
note of every eighth-note pair slightly late, just as a jazz player
would.

Note: These instructions assume that the time signature is,2/4, 3/4
or 4/4 ; the “backbeats” that Finale delays are, therefore, every
other eighth note. If the meter is 2/2 , however, the backbeats are
every quarter note, so the swing playback you get may seem erratic if
you were expecting traditional eighth-note swing. To solve the
problem, change the time signature to a quarter-note–based one before
using the MIDI Tool.

Note: Do not use both MIDI Tool Swing and Swing from the Playback
Controls, as these effects are additive.

2009-01-15 Thread Bob Morabito
Can anyone lease tell me specifically what complete steps need to
be taken, and what options on and off to save/export a midi file that

accurately represents Finale's onscreen score ONLY..

Please if u can also tell me roughly where I might find this info in
the manual, I would appreciate it.

So far all I could find is:
1) HP must be off, and
2) the four Playback options have to be off, also (unchecked)(* Play
Recorded Key Velocities • Play Recorded Note Durations • Play
Recorded Continuous Data • Play Recorded Tempo Changes. )

then export the file.

The SHSU servers don't like something minor in the headers of Bob

[Finale] TAN: Brian Ferneyhough--Lemma icon epigram

2008-03-26 Thread Bob Morabito
I happen to really enjoy and admire Brian Ferneyhough's work--and I
happened to find this entire piece online, though I would also have
loved to find some complete movements of his String Quartets.

Brian Ferneyhough--Lemma icon epigram, solo piano

This piece is from 1981--this recording has a REALLY long pause in
the beginning before starting( about 20 seconds!)--and on a Mac I had
to control click and save link as to d/l it.

This is the first page of the score-
http://tinyurl.com/2ejbtk

This is a discussion with the composer--he talks about this piece,
and irrational measure lengths, etc:

http://www.sospeso.com/contents/articles/ferneyhough_p1.html

The so-called 'irrational' measure lengths, i.e. those based on
beats expressed in terms of fractions of full beats in the
prevailing tempo, thus giving rise to such time signatures as 3/10
or 5/24, are useful as local 'dissonances' serving to refocus
attention and instantiate reassessment of the prevailing temporal
perspective. A somewhat distant analogy would be the metric
modulations typical of Elliott Carter's music, where a steady pulse
in one tempo would continue across at exactly the same perceived
rate in a new tempo, albeit notated differently, thus providing the
performers with a constant unit of measurement when undertaking
complex series of tempo modifications. I said earlier that these
pulses are not normally present to the same degree in my own
practice or, at most, are present only fleetingly through two
adjacent measures. I find that such 'irrational' measures serve as
a useful buffer between local changes of event density and actual
changes of base tempo, which latter I interpret as being a more
thorough-going radical intervention. Other composers have taken
this particular technique much further than I in the meantime, with
the result that the Law of Diminishing Returns has begun to apply.

Re: [Finale] Midi Key Velocities (Auto Dynamic Placement Plug in con't) A FOLLOW UP

2008-03-26 Thread Bob Morabito

After very much wasted time and effort, here is what was found:

This plugin does not give you a dynamic, according to a
supervisor at MM support, tho I've seen it in my scores.

What it does do is to take your midi velocities--and based upon the
settings in Expression Selections (I used the defaults), it
arbitrarily increases or decreases their value, and then bases the
dynamics for the score on THOSE new values, NOT your original key
velocities.

This makes NO sense to me.

Two small documented examples:

I have an on key velocity of 74-- presubably we should get a mp
marking..(range 62-74)..
yet this plug in FIRST CHANGES that velocity to 124, and then Finale
places the dynamic..as !!!

Another one -on key vel= 89, which sould be a forte (range 88-100)-
HOWEVER, this time Fin REDUCES it to 74, which again, SHOULD be a
mp, but FIn notates it as mf.

I wanted it --expected it--to base the dynamics on the velocities in
the original midi file, WITHOUT changing them--so in the above
examples I would have gotten an mp for the on vel of 74, and a forte
for the 89.
Some of the changes are 3x larger in numeric value, with other
values, even higher, all over the place, .

As has happened before, I provided documents to prove what I was
saying at which point, they cant argue it, and try to bully me into
believing it works correctly, just doesn't do what I want it to do,
and then basically dismiss me and the support request.

And they'll speak to the developers on my behalf.

I am following up with a letter too MM, as I want things to work as
advertised, and Im tired of proving thinsg are screwy, only to be
ignored...-

it probably wont do ANY good, but at least I;ll know I tried.

Thanks
Bob Morabito

Re: [Finale] O.T. The Internet and the Democratization of Music Publishing

2008-03-08 Thread Bob Morabito

Good points Ray--

I also have been deeply affected by the availability of music on
line, and using the computer for composing..

Many years ago, I decided to try to compose..but had NO idea how to
progress. My idea then--which I STILL follow-- was to, as TOTALLY as
possible, keep myself from listening to ANY older music..so as NOT to
sound dated, in my musical speech, gestures, etc...

I would guess my cut off point was the 1920's. Sounds drastic, but it
has really helped me..

I had many of the CRI, Nonesuch recordings-many which I picked up for
99 cents at record stores-(eg Boulez Structures-)

Now with the Internet (and sites like http://www.dramonline.org/,
which has many ( I believe to eventually be all of the old CRI
catalog recordings) and other sites
eg http://musicmavericks.publicradio.org/, and streaming
performances, from overseas, etc ,I can stay abreast of what's going
on, and totally immerse myself in a way unimaginable to me.

It's as the commercial says.priceless.

I have often felt that many works (the Copland and Carter Piano
Sonatas immediately come to mind) where later in the work, it seems
to just fall apart.--
and being a Monday morning quarterback.composer I wonder what they
were thinking!!

Both composers and their musical material were EXCELLENT, so my
thoughts are that these and many works suffered from the composer NOT
being able to sit back-- SOLELY as a critically listening member of
the audience-- and hear his work played back, as many times as needed
during the composing process.

They would either be involved playing it, or reading from score,
which would divert their attention away...

But SOLELY as a listener to our works--which we can now do with
computer playback, and a good mockup--its so much easer to hear, find
and fix areas of pitch, and gesture fatigue, form problems etc.,

and the flow of the piece from beginning to end can really be judged,

Just some thoughts.
Bob Morabito.

the randomizing aspect of HP. It's not supposed to play each
note exactly the same in a mechanical method, which would account
for the discrepancies in the lengths of the notes

The randomizing of the whole note value only happens with HP on, with
an exported midi file..otherwise, with HP off its says at 1/000-so
this would bear out what you've said.
Thing is I really dont want any discrepancies..just what I put in, I

For the sake of completeness, I include the results with HP OFF, of

[Finale] Midi Key Velocities (Auto Dynamic Placement Plug in con't)

2008-03-02 Thread Bob Morabito

FinMac2008a

Im still working with this Auto Dynamic Placement plugin...

In a sequencer I step entered the following quarter notes, with the
following On key velocities

Note On Key VelocityDefault Dynamic Values in Expression Selection
-
--

C3 10
D3 23 ppp
E3 36 pp
F3 49 p
G3 62 mp
A3 75 mf
B3 88 f
C4 101 ff
D4 114 fff
E4 127

These On Key Velocities correspond exactly to the Default Dynamic
Values found in the Expression Selection of the Expression Tool, and
the Auto Dynamics Placement Plug in (its the same thing).

I also used Note Expression and Text, as my choices.

I then imported this midi file into Finale, and then simply saved it,
and exported it out as a midi file--this was to see if Finale changed
these values at this step..

it didnt, as they remained the same.

However when trying to use this Auto Dynamic Placement plug in to
automatically assign dynamics to these notes, I didnt get the same
expected results, above-

I got the following dynamics, and returned On Key Velocities
(The plugin works in that it seems to have assigned the right
dynamics to the velocities..but somehow these velocities have been
changed from my initial Midi file)

G3 80mf
A3 89f
B3 104 ff
C4115 fff
D4127
E4127

It also messes with the values of a quarter note, which was 480,
changing it from 443-461

The settings Im using with the plugin are:

Min Vel Change between Dynamics: 8
The Default Dynamic values (above)
Place by: Entry
Uncheck Avoid Accents
Placement Layer 4 Voice 2
Use Default positioning

HP has to be on , or the results I get REALLY are bad. so I chose
Standard with its default settings.

Can anyone PLEASE tell me how and why these on velocities changed ?.
I need for them to stay the same as the imported midi file, as then
the plugin would seem to work fine

Thank you for any kind help you may offer.

Bob Morabito

PS_ I also, in Finale entered the above notes and assigned the
dynamics from the default chart to them and then exported that midi
file.
I expected to see the default dynamics in my sequence.but they were
changed also..

[Finale] Auto Dynamic Placement Plug in Settings

2008-02-23 Thread Bob Morabito

What it does

The Auto-Dynamic Placement plug-in allows you to place dynamics in
your score automatically based on the recorded MIDI key velocity.
You can specify the range of key velocities associated with each
dynamic

(From the FInale Help files--and its illustrated incorrectly by what
seems to be some sort of more swing settings?)_

I've searched thru the archives, and cant find hardly anything about
this, except that a user couldn't past amf with this-
(It seems anything other than 0 in Minimum Velocity Change seems to
give only one mf)

Im able to get a long string of only mf and f, although the midi key
velocities range from 7-127,using the following settings:

Minimum Velocity Change Between Dynamics=0
Dynamic Marking/Expression/Minimum Velocity--I copy the defaults from
the Expression selections, back into, the Minimum Velocity box

Place by Entry (i've tried them all)
Placement for Layer 1. Voice 1
Use Default Positioning

Anyone know the correct settings/procdeure to get dynamics that
accurately reflect the ones in the mdi file?

Thanks for any help-

Peace,
Bob Morabito
