It is my experience that writing obliges one to structure one's thought and 
make clear concepts that otherwise, expressed orally, are presented more 
vaguely.

This is certainly a benefit, as is good, solid procedural documentation.

There is the general question as to whether tech writers or engineers should be 
doing the work of documentation creation.

To answer your question, it is seen as more work at this initial stage.

Engineers as authors

Hi,

A few mechanical engineers have been asked, as part of their varied workload,
to author certain documents in English (How To, Webinars, software essentials)
in the near future.

Working with authors who are not formally trained is a new experience for me. I
am wondering how to best define their tasks and the tasks of my technical
writing group who will work together to ensure quality documents. For example:

? I could provide the engineers with templates in FrameMaker and an
introduction to the basics of technical writing and English grammar and bring
them to write good documents over time. Some formal training in technical
writing could be offered. The technical writers would then review the final
documents (container and content) to ensure the overall quality of the
documents.

? Or, maybe the role of the engineers should be to write rough content
within guidelines (get the ideas and workflows on paper), and my team of
technical writers could be responsible for formatting the content and
expressing their ideas/workflows correctly in English. This would take much
less time for the engineer (less of a learning curve).

Do you have some experience in this matter? Any hints for what may work best?

realize that the translation firm was charging a 12$/page fee for doing the DTP 
in Frame (resizing text frames, etc.) above the translation costs.

In addition, from your responses, I now better understand the translation 
process in general.

Translating FM files into Japonese

Hi,

We have located a translator in Japan to translate a 300-page training booklet
written in English. The document is very largely table based with typically an
image in row 1 and the caption underneath in row 2 with straddled narrow
columns containing arrows to show a sequence of actions.

The translator is charging reasonable translation costs and then there is an
additional 12$/page cost because the files are from FrameMaker. When we
questioned that cost, he asked if we could provide files in Trados format.
Maybe he is not familiar with FrameMaker files.

Anyway, I find this strange as in the past I have always provided FM files and
the company doing the translation took care of everything else on their side. I
received my Fm files translated into the target language from which I made PDFs.

Can anyone familiar with translating FM files explain why the individual is
requesting files in Trados format? Can that be done - just pay a company to
generate Trados files from FM files?

FM 9 - Logical Network Drive

Hi,

I wrote a few months ago about images, imported by reference, blinking on 
screen. The FM files and images are on a network server.

The problem seems to be that the new tech writer used SnagIt to save new screen 
captures using the network logical drive specification 
(\\Oseille = X:).

By scripting I did a search and replace. All seems well now. Quite a relief.

Anyone else save images to a network drive using a logical drive specification? 
Any problems.

Hi,

FM 9 Blinking linked images

Hi,

We have been working like this with documents on a server for years with almost 
no problems.

I see what you mean by copying the documents and images locally, but in our 
case we have documents with many text insets containing images...I cannot see 
how to copy the document, its images, and its text insets and their images in a 
simple manner. I have no checkout software and count on the network file 
locking for some protection from document access by multiple users.

If I must proceed as you mention, it would require some effort and file 
reorganization.

Frame has never, ever, worked right with network drives.  This really should be 
in the KB, but I guess they don't want such features known, at least before 
purchase.  :-(

Alter your workflow to copy the docs and graphics to a local drive, and work on 
them there.  Same problem with RH, and possibly other TCS components.

Some may say it works for them, but they are a small minority...

We are several tech writers using books/documents on a server, containing 
images imported by reference (also on the server). Network file locking is 
activated. The network is relatively fast.

Every day on the same workstation (FM9.0p.255, Windows 7 SP1), even in small 
documents (2 pages, 1 image), the image starts to blink. FM seems to freeze at 
this point (cannot scroll in the document or access menus). Must wait. Can last 
for minutes. A reboot re-establishes some order for a while (hours).

The writer often has used Snag-It to get a screen shot just previous to this 
behavior. We all use Snag-It for screen captures.

Any ideas? Our IT people are not familiar with FM and have not seen this 
problem before. I have searched the knowledge base without success.

Demo version of FM10

Hi,

I have a translator friend who translated some FM files using s demo version of 
FM 10 within the 30-day trial period. Some work has to be redone so he 
redownloaded a trial version of FM 10 (I am in no way condoning this practice) 
and has problems opening FM files, also messages about file locking...

I just would like to know if this is due to using a second trial version on the 
same PC. If so, I will encourage him to buy the product.

Opening a PDF file from FM 9 to a named destination

With your information that the named destination 
has a prefix (M8.newlink.) the command worked 
perfectly in the Internet browser:

I am using FM 9, latest patch, under Windows 7 (32-bit).

I have a simple FM file (3 pages) with a named 
destination created via a hypertext command 
(Specify Named Destination) on page 2 and a 
hyperlink (Jump To Named Destination) to it on 
page 3. I create the PDF file using the Adobe 
Printer. In the PDF Setup I have specified Create links and Tags as well.

I need to be able to open the file using a URL 
command as below, in a navigator like Internet 
Explorer. It should open to the correct location on page 2 using this command.

The PDF opens to page 1, not page 2 where the

Adobe Pro 7 and Windows 7

Hi,

I recently upgraded from XP to Windows 7.

Do you know if Adobe Professional 7 works under Windows 7?

A msg is popping up when I use Adobe Professional 
7 saying that something has changed, and pops up 
a Register dialog box. I click to register and a 
msg displays error creating file, and this all starts again.

Any ideas or similar experiences?

FM9: Cannot save - File with odd suffix (.7DE)

Hi Framers,

I jus changed computers - from XP to Windows 7. I am using FM9 p255.

I have a file that I can open and edit but not 
save! FM says its temporary file cannot be 
renamed because it has an odd suffix, like "file.7DE".

I deleted that file with the odd suffix and tried to save, same problem

I saved to a different file, and when editing it same problem - odd suffix.

But I have no problem working with our FM files 
on the network server (most of our files are there).

Any ideas?

Space at beginning of title

Exatly!! It works!! I search \Px (where x is a 
space) and replace with nothing...great.

Note that this also helped me find other spaces 
at beginning of regular paragraphs (not just titles) that should not be there.

Thx to everyone who helped me solve this problem, 
and to Rick Quattro who called me at work to offer this same advice.

What seemed like a lot of lost time now is a 
peice of cake - this group should get the Nobel Peace Prize!;)

Space at beginning of title

Hi,

We have redefined our title paragraph formats and 
the space that was entered manually is now included in the numbering scheme.

Result, additional space at the beginning of all 
titles (hundreds of them, of course).

Cannot find successful search & replace scheme that works.

FM 9 - Odd behavior on opening a document

Hi,

Usually an opened document appears as a tab(?) on 
the bar above the area where open documents 
appear. If multiple documents are opened, the 
names all appear on the same line (which is what I want).

Since I have run IXGen (indexing tool), this 
behavior has changed. On generating a list of 
index entries with IXGen, each document opened 
was relocated to the bottom of the screen as an 
icon(?)...on clicking the icon the document 
appeared in the viewing area but with its own 
title bar, that I then dragged onto the general 
title bar where all of the names of opened documents appeared before.

Now, each document I open has that same behavior. 
I have to click the icon, and then drag the 
document onto the title bar to put it where I 
want all my document names to appear.

Is this clear? Has anyone else seen this? I 
cannot find how to return FM to the behavior I want.

Diagonal line in a header cell

Hi,

I have a table with titles in the header area and 
also in the left column (let's say the headers 
are stats and the lines are cities), and would 
like the header cell in the upper left corner to 
have a diagonal line from top left to bottom 
right where I could type Stats above the diagonal 
and Cities below as titles for the 2 sets of headers.

This seems a common presentation style to me. I 
can't figure out how to make a good clean 
diagonal that really goes from cell corner to 
cell corner simply - or do I have to insert an anchored frame, etc.

Any ideas are appreciated.

Book problems - Fm 8 p277 - XP

The files are on the network. But they are 
relatively small (66 pages) compared to other 
books (1200 pages) that work fine.

I will wash and see what happens.

Can I get any info on network timeout and using 
FM files - any documentation out there?

Book problems - Fm 8 p277 - XP

Hi,

I have a series of 6 books of 6 documents each that use common documents (2).

Each book has a generated TOC.

These books crash FM and I don't know why.

For example, I create the book, do the numbering, 
update it, can print it, save after each 
operation, and close it. And then I just open and 
close the book 3 times in a row. The third time, 
FM crashes, the book is corrupt, and I have to 
recreate another book. And the problem will 
repeat itself. The backup book file may be corrupt too.

Are there some basic rules to follow to avoid 
this. Does the first document in a book (often 
the title page) have special importance. Does it 
have to be configured in a special way? For 
example, can it use variables, conditional formats, conditional text, etc.

I always use the same printer driver.

I have fifteen other books that work just fine. Very stable.

Any ideas...

The files are on the network. But they are 
relatively small (66 pages) compared to other 
books (1200 pages) that work fine.

I will wash and see what happens.

Can I get any info on network timeout and using 
FM files - any documentation out there?

FrameScript - assign value to a FM variable

Hi,

I have 2 variables in FM 8 that I want to assign values to:

(1) Product: assign CAR in default font
(2) ProductBold: assign DOLL with char format BoldOnly

I use the Get command to get the varfmt I want and give the Set commands:

Set vMyVariable1.fmt = 'DOLL';

Set vMyVariable2.fmt = 'CAR';

The first command works, the second does 
not...there is a weird character between the 
words Default and Font and I do not kow how to get that in the command...

I have tried:

FrameScript - assign value to a FM variable

Hi,

Fm 8 - Track Changes - problems!

The Track Changes feature uses, I assume, 
conditional formats to color text and manage changes (refuse, accept).

Problem: This feature seems to result in an 
unknown (un-named) conditional format affecting 
neighboring anchor symbols. So when I specify 
that only conditional format CF1 be shown, the 
polluted anchored frames that are supposed to 
have NO conditional format do not show, giving 
unresolved x-refs (see Fig. 3.1 but no anchored frame!!).

I have found such situations in my current 
documents. Now if I try and use the normal dialog 
box to unconditionalize a selection of text 
containing the anchored frame symbol...nothing happens.

Solution: I have to (1) move the anchored frame 
symbol elsewhere to a paragraph without any track 
changes, and (2) delete the still conditionalized 
text manually and re-enter that text and recreate any affected x-refs.

Took time to find/understand (?)/solve! And I 
don't have all that much hair left (will soon move to fingernails)!!

Any one else have this problem? Any better solutions or tips?

Help: Hypertext command "popup menu"

Each submenu item (ex. Apple) is on a separate 
line on a reference page (whose workflow name is used by the popup command).

I make sure the proper paragraph format is applied.

I use the same approach fo the second submenu as for the first.

Have you tried and gotten two submenus to work (their commands that is)?

Help: Hypertext command "popup menu"

Hi,

I use hypertext commands in the header area of a 
FM 8 document (latest patch) to display a menu 
(ex. Snacks) with two submenus (ex. Fruits and Vegetables). See example below:

Snacks
[Fruits]...Apple
 Orange
 Banana
[Vegetables]...Carrot
Potato

The commands on each submenu (a name with a link 
to a URL) show when I click a submenu name, but 
only the items in the first submenu, when 
clicked, actually work (open the URL). So, 
clicking Apple works, but not Carrot or Potato (and veggies are important!).

Any ideas? I really need a second and a third submenu!!

See, I am conceiving a header area of a FM 
document (it automatically loads on starting FM) 
that would provide access via menus/submenus to 
all Documentation ressources (books, documents, 
Excel files, Web sites, etc.). Makes it easy to 
add new ressources and explain them to new tech 
writers without having to browse subdirectory 
structures, create Windows shortcuts, etc.

Each submenu item (ex. Apple) is on a separate 
line on a reference page (whose workflow name is used by the popup command).

I make sure the proper paragraph format is applied.

I use the same approach fo the second submenu as for the first.

Have you tried and gotten two submenus to work (their commands that is)?
