Re: [Framers] Can variables be defined to include characteristics (e.g., BOLD, OVERLINE, ITALIC)?

2024-03-07 Thread rick
Yes, as long as you define the desired formatting as FrameMaker Character
Formats. Then you can refer to them in your variable definitions inside of
angled brackets; for example:

Widget

The is a shortcut for Default Paragraph Font.

[Framers] RE XML Structure - line breaks, tabs, and variables [No Classification]

2023-02-09 Thread Mitchell, Richard (NNPPI)
This message has been marked as No Classification by Mitchell, Richard (NNPPI)

The whole idea of XML and its predecessor SGML is that it is a formatless
language. Any format is introduced by the associated style sheet when the file
is published.

Bulleted lists should be generated using the Random List element or if you want
it numbered a Sequential List

[Framers] XML Structure - line breaks, tabs, and variables

2023-02-06 Thread cuc tu
Hi there,

Our engineering team continues to move forward with supplying XML content for
us to parse. Previously, we had worked out how to transform all of the
attribute values into separate elements. One of these elements is a description
and they want to format this content using \n, \t, and \b (new lines, tabs, and
bullets). For example:

This is a description of a command. The command does the following:\n
\t\bDoes something\n
\t\bDoes something else\n
\t\bDoes another thing\n\n
That's the end.

They are aslo wanting to use variables, which are contained in another XML
file. They are referenced thusly:

Parameter{$[MinValue]:$[MaxValue]}

And this should resolve as: Parameter{0:4096}

I have not yet seen what the variables XML file looks like.

Are these things possible and if they are, any guidance on how to accomplish
this?

Thank you,
C2

Alison,

You can use Peter's approach. To apply a character format in the
definition of a variable, put the character tag in angle brackets before the
text; to go back to the previous character format use or . The Add/Edit Variable dialog includes a list of

backet-enclosed character formats and so you don't have to
type them.

If you don't want to bother defining a new color, you can maintain two
files, each with a single entry in the character catalog, called something
like VariableFormat. In one define VariableFormat to have the properties you
want, in the other define VariableFormat to be AsIs for all properties; in
the other define VariableFormat to have the properties you want while
editing. Include in the definition of every variable. To
switch between the two views, import formats, selecting only character
formats, from the appropriate file. By the way, to define a character format
that doesn't change any properties, in the Character Designer, type
Shift-F8.

You could also use conditional text and apply a Variable condition to all
variables with a global Find/Change. As needed, you can either change the
condition indicator for the Variable condition, or show or hide condition
indicators.

The special color is the only one of these methods that doesn't require
you to make an appropriate setting before printing.

You're welcome, Alison.

Thanks, Lynne, for confirming after all these years away from actual

Alison, Adobe listens to requests, just not here. I'm sure someone on the

OTOH, perhaps someone could provide a script for this task. Hint. :)

Does Frame have anything similar for variables?

It would be great if I could look at a page of Frame text and immediately
see which items were inserted as variables.

I can't remember if variables can be defined with a character format. If
so, define a format with a color that you define as a non-printing color in
a color-definition set. If not, use Find to apply a format with a

Hi Carla,

itl developped a FrameScript for this:

Is anyone aware of a script for adding/creating variables from a list/table?

Ideally, you'd have the variable on one column, and the values on the other.

I use separate templates for chapters and appendices. Keeps things

[Framers] Best Practice for Master Page Variables for Appendices?

2018-09-17 Thread Caroline Tabach
Hi,

I am trying to work out the best way to do this

I have a book with chapter files and appendix files.

The header uses the following format

Chapter 9: Running H/F 1 - when Chapter is a variable with
Chapter<$chapnum> Running H/F1 is a variable variable
with<$paratext[Heading1]>

For the appendix chapters instead of the tag Heading1 I can use a tag
called AppHeading1

This works very well for me in the Table of Contents (I want the word
Appendix/Chapter to appear as relevant) and is controlled with the
reference page.

However, in this case I need to use different variables for the headers.
So that it will say Appendix A: Writing a book etc (using AppHeading1
instead of Heading1) and the correct variable so it will say Appendix
<$chapnum>

What is the best practice for all this, and for setting up Master pages.?

If I use different variables, either I paste in the different set of
variables manually on my regular "Right" master page, or make a special
master page called Appendix which must be applied as a custom master page

What is the best practice to make everything work well, if you are have a
book with appendices and regular chapters

Thanks

2017-09-05 Thread Mary Sheahan
Sorry for the delay thanking you -- I was back to InDesign for a week.
I'm actually already doing that -- or close enough to make no nevermind.  I
have it on a reference page. It's  entirely possible I got it from you way back
then.

I remember in my first version of Frame we could edit each variable after the
other in the list; now we have to jump back to the document.  It's a shame,
because this template was set up when we had that feature -- we have so very
many variables in use!

I'm almost tempted to open a file with text editor to see if it can be done
that way...

One trick I've used (in Olden Days) is to make a "Variables Management" FM
'template file' that has all of my variables defined and shown on a table in
the first body page. (Nothing else about the template matters.) Then, IIRC, one
can use keyboard combos (Esc s v; then Alt+E, maybe?) that let you changes its
definition when you have it highlighted. Worth trying, I reckon. Worst case
scenario, you're double-clicking in body pages rather than multiply clicking in
a pod, and you've got a one-stop shop for checking variable definitions at a
glance (and/or for having multiple variable sets that you can apply to a
reusable document set: make more than one Variable Management template file).

I've just come back to FM after a long time working in InDesign, and beyond
that it's my first experience in FM17.  There are LOTS of variables in this
document, and my wrists would love less mouse-work.
I know the keystrokes to bring up the variables pod. Once that's up, is there
a keystroke combo for editing the selected custom variable?  At the moment, I'm
either using the mouse or tabbing through the pod's icons.
As far as I can find, the FM17 help file instructions for editing user
variables only references the mouse interface.  And its keyboard shortcuts
chart gives a shortcut for inserting a variable but not for editing one.

Re: [Framers] Tool for importing selected variables

2017-06-30 Thread David Artman
RE user variable subsetting: Yep, works like a charm. One might even
make an argument for single-variable 'template' files for each variable
in your library, but that's often overkill. But I've definitely broken
them down into product-specific subsets of variables and conditions,
with further OS- or even customer-specific other subset files of
variables and conditions. One's entire taxomony can be represented just
by the variables/conditions files; and just put a table of them (the
variables) on the first page for easy editing.

RE system variables: One of the 1.9 million reasons not to have
different use cases for system variables! Running H/F and
table-continuation really need to be standardized across the
enterprise. Even if you want a few different Running H/F formats, take
advantage of the 10 (12? it's been a while...) that FrameMaker
provides; and do not just repurpose 1, 2, and 3 over and over again. As
a rule of thumb, I generally say "if it's on a Master Page, it should
be sacrosanct, not doc-specific". Kinda the point of them, I feel. :)

Hi Tammy

I don't remember a specific tool, but there is a technique that may be
helpful. It always worked for me, anyway:

Copy the file that contains the variable you want to import across multiple
files, then open the copy and delete every variable *other than* the

ImportFormatsSpecialES allows you to just import system variables and/or

import one category or the other (or both). It also breaks down document

Happy Wednesday all.

In the distant reaches of my mind, I seem to recall a tool that would allow
you to import only selected variables from one doc to another - such as only
system variables or only user-defines variables. Am I remembering correctly
and if so, what is the name/where can I get this tool?

If the tool never existed or is no longer available, then maybe this sounds
like a job for our super-scripter Rick Quatro?

Re: [Framers] using variables

2017-03-20 Thread Peter Gold
I'm just working from personal memory, so this could just be wishful
thinking.

It might be possible to create the behavior by using a dedicated run-in
autonumbered paragraph format, in combination with a cross-reference, in
the table title or in a heading or footing row to emulate the current table
sheet number, and the last table sheet number.

I'm thinking that this somewhat like the technique of capturing the last
page number of the last page in a book of separate files, by using a
cross-reference to overcome the limitation of the $lastpagenum variable
only working within the current document.

I seem to recall, but I could be wrong, that table headers/footers may have
a property to not appear on the first page of the table. If so, this could
be useful.

I'm not sure if an autonumbered paragraph in a table header/footer
increments on pages after the first page.

If the entire document consists only of pages that display the table, other
auto-numbering and cross-reference strategies, and dedicated master-page
designs, may be possible.

Re: [Framers] using variables

2017-03-20 Thread Scott Prentice
Yes .. by definition, a single variable in a single file cannot have
more than one value based on its location in the document (unless it's a
special variable like $curpagenum). However, you could create a script
or plugin that could process a file to create different variables or
strings from one variable that would have differing values in different
areas of that document.

[Framers] using variables

Re: [Framers] Where are the Running HF system Variables in FM11?

2016-11-04 Thread Studio Smalbro
Aaah... First things that goes blind are truely the eyes! Thanks a lot
for the fast help!

When I create a blank document in FrameMaker 11, I would expect to see

predefined Running HF system variables in the Variables Pod, but they
are not there. Do I really have to build them myself or are they merely
hidden or do I not look in the right place?

Try viewing the master page (instead of the body page). In FrameMaker
2015 (and I believe earlier), the Running H/F variables appear in the
Variables pod only when viewing the master page.

[Framers] extra space - with adjacent formats in variables

2016-11-02 Thread Monique Semp
Hello, Framers,

Unstructured FrameMaker, 2015 (on Windows).

I’ve found that FrameMaker adds an unwanted space between adjacent format
specifiers in variable definitions. It’s not only visible in appearance, but an
actual space that shows up in PDF output.

My goal is to create a variable where the value is in “filepath” character
format and has an embedded portion that’s in “varname” format. (Recognize those
DITA tag names?!). The point is to have most of the package filename in the
“filepath” font, but parts of the filename are the date in MMDD format and
a version, so I want to put those in the “varname” format.

I tried “Win7_ICS_--_MMDD.zip”, which should do the trick. But although
all the chars are in the expected format (“filepath” or “varname”), there’s a
very large looking space between the “YYMMDD” and “.zip” parts.

When I click the instance of the variable in the open file’s window, the
variable highlights as usual, EXCEPT for the space, which doesn’t highlight at
all.

I was hoping that this was just a viewing-in-FrameMaker problem that wouldn’t
manifest itself in the PDF, but no such luck. Not only is the spacing visible,
there must be an actual space because if I try Ctrl-F to find “DD.zip”, nothing
is found. But if I search for “ .zip”, it’s found.

The problem is not with the specific formats, but anytime there are two
adjacent formats in the variable definition. I experimented with several combos
in the hope that maybe the problem was with the space in the “”
format name, but it didn’t matter which formats I used.

Any workarounds?

Interesting thing on the fonts, Klaus.
Both solutions work, but I opted for Tino's because my font isn't Unicode.

[Framers] Subject: Special Characters in Variables

2016-02-07 Thread Wim Hooghwinkel - idtp
Hello Art,

just typing a dash works for me. Or are you looking for other special
characters?

The contents of a variable should be unicode. Best approach for special
characters (in any language) would be to type the text in a Unicode text
editor, then copy and past it into the variable definition box.

Vriendelijke groet / Kind regards,

Wim Hooghwinkel

[Framers] Special Characters in Variables

2016-02-07 Thread Art Campbell
On FM 15, I'm working with a product name that I want in a variable that
contains dashes/hyphens (like Jack-In-The-Box).

The Frame text key sequence of Esc - h doesn't work, and the ASCII sequence
of Alt 2011 doesn't work.

Any ideas?

TIA,
Art

Hi Art,

you are looking for "special characters in dialog boxes".

You may look here:

This is for FM 9, but it seems to work in FM 2015 as well.

The code for non-breaking hyphen is: \+

Print a list of variables?

2015-03-12 Thread Christenson, Pat
I have book with 30+ files. I need a list of the variables throughout the book.

It doesn't appear that you can generate a list of variables so does anyone know
of a way to print the variable pod? (Other than screencapping it. There are a
few hundred variables so that would be a lot of screencaps.)

This is a one-time thing so a script would be overkill. Thanks.

Actually, I think a script is probably the easiest way.

Or .. you could download and install the trial of my FM2DITA plugin. One of the
commands is Catalog Report which will generate a list of most styles,
formats, and named objects (of which variable definitions are one) in the
current document.

http://leximation.com/tools/info/fm2dita.php

Most of the commands in this plugin will limit the amount of processing you can
do with the trial, but I'm pretty sure that this command has no such
limitations. It'll give you 30 days to do what you want .. so it might be worth
the effort to install. Just run the installer and get a trial auth code ..
don't bother with any of the other install instructions (unless of course you
want to try a DITA conversion).

Cheers,

Deleting Variables at the Book Level

2014-12-19 Thread Carol J. Elkins
Have you tried View-Pods-Variables at the book level with all files
open in the book? In the pod, select All Open Docs. Granted you can
delete only one variable at a time, but I find it really helpful to
see all of the variables for all of the files lined up alphabetically
and work through them that way.

Deleting Variables at the Book Level

2014-12-18 Thread Tony Marek (PDF)
Hello all – Second question in one week:

Is there any easy way to delete obsolete variables from the variables
library at the book level (Frame 12)?

I’m trying to create a consistent list of variables across all chapters in
a book and I can’t find a way to do the deletions except
chapter-by-chapter. Importing variables from one up-to-date chapter to
others does not perform any deletions of variables not on the source/master
file.

Thanks,

~Tony

I’m trying to create a consistent list of variables across all chapters in
a book and I can’t find a way to do the deletions except
chapter-by-chapter. Importing variables from one up-to-date chapter to
others does not perform any deletions of variables not on the source/master
 file.

 Thanks,
 ~Tony

RE: variables interface

2013-11-13 Thread Reng, Dr. Winfried
Hi Craig,

If you leave the Add/Edit Variable window open, you just need
to double-click on a variable. Then you can change its definition
immediately without clicking on Edit first.

However, if the Add/Edit Variable window is not on top of its
tab group, it is not shown automatically (like e.g. the Cross-Reference
window). Then you must click on the Add/Edit Variable tab to bring
it to front. This would be a very good enhancement!
Ask for this on the Adobe Feature Request form:

Best regards

Subject: variables interface

I have a template with a series of built in variables that have generic content
until used in a specific document.

Double-clicking on a variable brings up the variables pod where I then have to
click Edit to bring up the window wherein I can actually change the content of
the variable.

Does anybody know a way to do this in one step? (My current process is clearly
a more complicated way to have to change variable content than the old
interface provided.)

If a one-step edit is not possible, can Adobe please add a modifier key that
can be pressed when doubled clicking on a variable so that the Edit window is
immediately available?

Apologies if I'm doing things the hard way and an obvious solution is
available. Please clue me in if that is the case.

Thanks, framers!

RE: variables interface

2013-11-13 Thread Harvey, Peggy
Hi Craig,

I highly recommend the BookVars plugin from Leximation. I use it to do exactly
what you describe in one step. I have several variables that have the same name
in all books but different definitions in each book. I maintain a single,
master variable file for all of my books, then simply import the set of
definitions for that particular book. The BookVars plugin bypasses the
Variables pod so you don't have to edit each variable with multiple clicks.

Hi Linda

What formatting do you have applied to your variables? There's a bug that has
this effect for xref formats, that makes them unconditional in some
circumstances. I'm wondering if you're seeing something similar.

Conditional text on variables works fine for us in FM10, so it's not a
universal bug.

When I set a paragraph with variables to be conditional, then hide it, the

it doesn't take.

Has anyone else seen this and found a workaround? Is this a defect in FM10?

FM 10 on Win7.

When I set a paragraph with variables to be conditional, then hide it, the
variable don't hide. Even when I select a variable and apply a conditional
tag, it doesn't take.

Has anyone else seen this and found a workaround? Is this a defect in FM10?

Thanks.

Re: Initial size of Variables Pod in FM10

I've got all my pods collapsed into a "menu" on the side. This means I only expand pods when I need them. The variables pod acts like all the others from that point of view. When they're expanded, there seems to be a minimum width for a number of pods, including the variables. Really annoying!

To do them all at once, just say Replace All. This will replace all
throughout a book with the right settings chosen. Also, if you don't have a
book, you can build a temporary one that includes all your files. You
probably one to test with will a one-by-one replace to make sure you are
getting what you want. Remember that case differences might cause a problem.

I doubt that FrameScript could do it better and coding this would certainly

You can do it from within FrameMaker, but not all in one step. Simply create
your variable and then copy your variable to the clipboard. Then use
Find/Change. Enter the text you want to replace in the Find section and
choose By Pasting in the Change section. The paste function will create
the variable and substitute it for the text in any other documents that you
paste into. So you only have to create and copy the variable once.

If you have a lot of terms to convert, this could take a while. So you might
want to use FrameScript or ExtendScript to create a script to do it for you.

Bookmark Setup and Section Variables

2013-07-02 Thread Oran Petersen

I followed a couple of recent threads: Bookmarks and Section variables, and
offer the following information based on painful experience on these topics.

Bookmarks in Books:
You can choose Paragraphs (or Elements if you have structured files)
As mentioned in the thread, settings chosen during Save As PDF do not stick.
The ?Magic? is in the first file in the book and in the book itself. Other
files can have different tags, but ALL desired bookmark tags must be in the
first file.
Import Paragraphs from the first file into the book to be sure that they are
available in both.
Select all files in the book, including the top level book entry.
Then, from the menu: Format > Document > PDF Setup... make your selections and
click Set.
Be sure and save the book.
You have now permanently saved your settings in this book and in all the files
in this book.

In a related thread, a user was having trouble NOT selecting a undesired
paragraph as a bookmark. This happens for paragraphs that are used somewhere in
the body pages, but are NOT in the paragraph catalog. We had this trouble when
adding a text column with a paragraph tag during publishing operations. Even
though we were using elements, this stray tag destroyed the PDF bookmarks. The
twisted logic is simple. If the paragraph is not in the catalog, you can?t
deselect it. But by default, Frame selects it for you. To fix, add the errant
tags to the paragraph catalog and set up your book as discussed above.
De-select the new entries during setup and you are good to go.
Note: If you are using elements, you must still choose paragraphs and follow
the full procedure above, including the save, for the setting to take. You
cannot just choose and switch back to elements. After the save you can reselect
elements and save again.

Elements used for bookmarks follow similar specifications. ALL elements desired
for bookmarks must be in the first book file and in the book EDD. In addition,
the bookmark hierarchy directly mirrors the element hierarchy. You cannot
choose the hierarchical relationship during setup as you can for paragraphs.
Setup is otherwise the same as for paragraphs.

Section and Sub-section variables
These were a much welcomed addition for us, but the Frame folks decided to hook
them to the new book hierarchy, rendering them mostly worthless for our
purposes. From the thread I sense that others are confused and frustrated as
well.
>From the book, open the numbering dialog and you see that Section and
>Sub-section are grayed out. Create a folder (not group), add a file to the
>folder, open numbering, and you see Section available, but Chapter and
>Sub-section are grayed out. Add a folder at this 2nd level, add a file and
>Sub-section becomes available, but Chapter and Section are not. We cannot use
>hierarchical books due to processing operations, so we are not happy.
Adobe: Can you hear us now? Disconnect the variables from the books please.

RE: Convert text to variables

2013-07-01 Thread Christenson, Pat
Hi Craig -

I guess I haven't been clear about the process I'm trying to automate.

It's not a case of replacing text with variables.

We have books that have many, many variables in them. Each time the book is
updated, the variables must be redefined. We get the new definitions as a plain
text list. Our task is to redefine the appropriate variables with the new
definitions. Right now, it's a slow and tedious to redefine each variable but
once that's done, it's a simple matter to import the Variable Definitions
throughout the book.

I was hoping to find an inexpensive plug-in that could quickly convert (or map)
the text list to variable definitions.

Thanks for offering a solution, though. :)

Thanks to all who responded.

Attaching the variables pod to the dock seems to make the pod behave
(within the dock). In my case, this means that FM is difficult to use

So I think Adobe should look at this as a minor bug.

every time taking up 20-25% of my document page. Is there a way to change
this behaviour and have it open like most other pods?

Initial size of Variables Pod in FM10

2013-07-01 Thread Christenson, Pat
Here's what I've done with all the pods.

Open the pod.
Drag it away from its current location so it becomes a free-floating pod.
Resize it.
Drag it into my dock.

Now when I access it, it opens from the dock at the size I set.

After I did this with all the pods, I saved my workspace so they default to
being part of my dock.

Convert text to variables

To do them all at once, just say "Replace All". This will replace all
throughout a book with the right settings chosen. Also, if you don't have a
book, you can build a temporary one that includes all your files. You probably
one to test with will a one-by-one replace to make sure you are getting what
you want. Remember that case differences might cause a problem.

I doubt that FrameScript could do it better and coding this would certainly be
slower.

You can do it from within FrameMaker, but not all in one step. Simply create
your variable and then copy your variable to the clipboard. Then use
Find/Change. Enter the text you want to replace in the Find section and
choose "By Pasting" in the Change section. The paste function will create the
variable and substitute it for the text in any other documents that you paste
into. So you only have to create and copy the variable once.

If you have a lot of terms to convert, this could take a while. So you might
want to use FrameScript or ExtendScript to create a script to do it for you.

We have a long list of terms that correspond to existing variables in numerous

each one), it would really speed things up.

Ah! In that case, you absolutely need the BookVars plugin from Leximation.
Given what I now understand as your need, this will do exactly what you want.

BookVars is my most-oft-used plugin in FrameMaker! I maintain all my variables
text in external text files using this - it works at the book level, by the way.

Initial size of Variables Pod in FM10

2013-07-01 Thread Böðvar Björgvinsson
Thanks to all who responded.

Attaching the variables pod to the dock seems to make the pod behave
(within the dock). In my case, this means that FM is difficult to use
without a second monitor which again affects some FM shortcuts.

So I think Adobe should look at this as a minor bug.

Bodvar

Initial size of Variables Pod in FM10

2013-07-01 Thread rebecca officer
I've got all my pods collapsed into a "menu" on the side. This means I only
expand pods when I need them. The variables pod acts like all the others from
that point of view. When they're expanded, there seems to be a minimum width
for a number of pods, including the variables. Really annoying!

Cheers
