Freebsd 9.1 kernel compile with Physical Address Extension

2013-03-12 Thread Justin Crawford

Hi,

I have been trying to compile the 9.1 kernel for an older system which
has PAE support, unfortunately because -Werror is enabled, I cannot
complete the compile (see warnings below). I am running a fresh install
of FreeBSD 9.1-RELEASE. I can successfully compile the kernel without PAE.

Kernel config: http://pastebin.com/5mzQagKM

cc1: warnings being treated as errors
/usr/src/sys/cam/ctl/ctl_frontend_cam_sim.c: In function 'cfcs_datamove':

pointer from integer of different size [-Wint-to-pointer-cast]

I am new to the mailing lists (and mailing lists in general) so let me
know if you need any more information.

Seems to be the same issue I just had. See the mailing
list archives of the last few days.

In short: method (a)
# true /dev/da0
# true /dev/da1
# true /dev/da2
# true /dev/da3
or method (b)
# mount /dev/da0 /mnt
# mount /dev/da1 /mnt
# mount /dev/da2 /mnt
# mount /dev/da3 /mnt
will cause the proper device nodes (e. g. /dev/da0s1, /dev/da1s1,
/dev/da2s1 and /dev/da3s1) corresponding to inserted media to
appear. Those can then be mounted in the usual way.

When I plug it to the USB port and activate the Storage option, this

It's a wild guess but if you have Gnome installed, try disabling HAL

No luck :S

I rebooted with HAL disabled without bringing Gnome up and I still get

This may force AP to drop the packet, the ap may de authenticate

interval and force client to drop existing sessions like ftp.

Please try changing the channel. If the client and AP are both A
capable please try using the A band as there are more non overlapping
channels and u may be able to find a channel with low interference.

Hi Mubeesh,

It seems to be a random drop.. FTP will be humming along and then wlan0
will go down..

I have the router set for channel 11...

i do not have these types of drops with other wifi capable devices..

ex. WIN laptop, Playstaion 3... etc...

Also yesterday, I lost complete connectivity to the router while my WIN PC
was connected and browsing just fine..

I had to bounce the interface and reset the default gateway and my
connection restored.

I did:

/etc/rc.d/netif restart /etc/rc.d/routing restart

wlandebug or tcpdump ??

Hi Mubeesh,

It seems to be a random drop.. FTP will be humming along and then wlan0 will
go down..

I have the router set for channel 11...

i do not have these types of drops with other wifi capable devices..

ex.  WIN laptop, Playstaion 3... etc...

Also yesterday, I lost complete connectivity to the router while my WIN PC

I had to bounce the interface and reset the default gateway and my

I did:

interesting.. do you know of a better adapter to use??

ive done a search on wlan0 and bmiss.. alot of threads regarding that

FYI, you can change bmiss value with ifconfig(8).

i am going to reconfig the bmiss to 200 and see how the int handles

This may force AP to drop the packet, the ap may de authenticate
client if it sees continuous stream of such packets in a short
interval and force client to drop existing sessions like ftp.

Please try changing the channel. If the client and AP are both A
capable please try using the A band as there are more non overlapping
channels and u may be able to find a channel with low interference.

What version FreeBSD are you using? The only workaround I know is kill
wpa_supplicant and run again- been happening to me for ages. But 8.1 it

I am thinking of doing a fresh install to see if my issue clears.. I am
beyond frustrated.. A WAN IP and router change and now I have some odd
tick/hangup on the system???!!! that makes no sense.. if i put the old
router in place it works fine.. I really dont want to use the old router
either,, it requires a reboot daily.. it flakey...

I checked the router for ACLs and anything that might cause conflict but I
am not seeing anything.. I really cant see how its the new router.. my
WIN LAPTOP when connecting to the router works flawlessly... The only odd
thing I do see in regards to the router and FreeBSD box is the WEP
attributes:

ifconfig shows:

wepkey 1:40-bit // Router shows: WEP Encryption: 64 bits 10 hex digits..
is that an issue??

Router is a Linksys WRT54G2... My router logs show in and out traffic
from the FreeBSD box.. so this is why Im thinking its the FreeBSD box...

Can i do a system wide grep on all files to see if i find the OLD WAN IP
hardcoded somewhere???

I have completely disable ipfw as well:

yeaguy# ipfw -q flush
yeaguy# ipfw show
65535 4145 3401628 allow ip from any to any

If anyone can assist Id be very greatful..

Thanks

Justin V.

My FreeBSD system connects to my WIFI router just fine as well..  I am
seeing troubles browsing the inet with my FreeBSD machine (Xorg and opera)
Pulling up Google.com can take up to 30s..

My Other windows machine is using the FreeBSD as its gateway, I am running
ipnat. This pc suffers from the same issues as the FreeBSD box..

I configured the new router with the same ssid and wepkey.. so minimal
adjustments would have to be made for other WIFI users in the house..
Everyone is fine except me...

My server is fine as far as my Website is concerned.. I changed my DNS with
my host to point to my new WAN IP.. I can pull my page fine.. I can ssh to
my server fine from my phone, phones ip is from my Phones netowrk.. this is
not being done via WIFI on my phone..

So my Nat'd WIN PC and my FreeBSD Xorg cannot browse the internet like it
used to.. 30s to 40s to pull up google is just unacceptable, when I have my
laptop sitting here using the same WIFI router pulling it up in about 3ms...

Another odd symptom I am seeing is that when i issue the command 'alpine' to
check my email, it hangs for a good 30s  So in my mind, Im thinking,
what changed?? My router and my Public IP.. thats it.. its almost like I
have my OLD WAN ip hardcoded somewhere causing a conflict.. I cannot find it

Hi,

I am having a very difficult time understanding what is going on with this
FreeBSD machine..

I was having inet trouble so i put in a new router on my network (home
network)..

I have a FreeBSD machine on my network:

FreeBSD yeaguy.com 8.1-RELEASE FreeBSD 8.1-RELEASE #3: Thu Nov 4 20:43:41

Without reading any further, this simply =reeks= of being a DNS problem.
(99.98792+% of all 30+ seconds to something over the net problems
are timeout issue. :)

I suspect:
  a) the new router is not using the same 'local network' adddress as the
old one was, This is not a total show stopper, because everyting
'local' is using DHCP to get both the local machine address _and_
 the router address.
  b) you have a DNS server address hard-coded in the /etc/resolv.conf file.
(the old router and new router are providing DNS proxy services on
*different* addresses, and wyat you have hard-coded is the -old-
  address)
  c) your FBSD machine is trying to query the hard-coded DNS server
address _first_, and when it gets no response, it *eventually*
(ie. after 30 seconds) tries the 'second' DNS server address it has,
which is the one learned by DHCP -- that works, the name resolves,
 and the page loads.

On a WORKING windows box click Start-Run, and type 'ipconfig/all' in the
box, to see what it is using for a DNS server.

Check '/etc/resolv.conf' on your FreeBSD box, and see if it lists a
*different* address on a 'namemserver' line.

Heres what my resolv.conf is, ive changed it to use the router and itself,
no change in status:

[...@yeaguy ~]$ cat /etc/resolv.conf
#domain yeaguy.com
#nameserver 10.1.1.1
nameserver 192.168.1.1
[...@yeaguy ~]$

Im currently set to use the router..

The WIN pc is using:

209.18.47.61 and 209.18.47.62.. hmm.. i will try those..

Still hangs and times out.. but able to resolve and ping google.com just
fine g...

PDT 2010 v...@yeaguy.com:/usr/obj/usr/src/sys/HBCA i386

I have windows machines on my network..

One of my windows machines is my laptop and I connect directly to the
router via WIFI without any trouble at all... I can browse any website
without complaint.

My FreeBSD system connects to my WIFI router just fine as well.. I am
seeing troubles browsing the inet with my FreeBSD machine (Xorg and
opera) Pulling up Google.com can take up to 30s..

Heres what my resolv.conf is, ive changed it to use the router and itself, no
change in status:

[...@yeaguy ~]$ cat /etc/resolv.conf
#domain yeaguy.com
#nameserver 10.1.1.1
nameserver 192.168.1.1
[...@yeaguy ~]$

Im currently set to use the router..

The WIN pc is using:

209.18.47.61 and 209.18.47.62.. hmm.. i will try those..

Still hangs and times out.. but able to resolve and ping google.com just
fine g...

I think we are resolved...

I statically set my NAT'd WIN PC to what the Laptop was picking up and
problem solved..

I edited named.conf and set my forwarders to what my laptop was picking up
and problem solved.. my named.conf have the forwarder set to:

192.168.1.1, apparently the new router and an old dns server from my last
job.. which normally worked fine..

i suspect that the old router was able to handle dns, while this one
cannot...

Thanks so much..

So my Nat'd WIN PC and my FreeBSD Xorg cannot browse the internet like it
used to.. 30s to 40s to pull up google is just unacceptable, when I have my
laptop sitting here using the same WIFI router pulling it up in about
3ms...

Another odd symptom I am seeing is that when i issue the command 'alpine'
to check my email, it hangs for a good 30s So in my mind, Im thinking,
what changed?? My router and my Public IP.. thats it.. its almost like I
have my OLD WAN ip hardcoded somewhere causing a conflict.. I cannot find
it hardcoded anywhere..

Well, no wonder it was so cheap; ASUS is going with their 10
model Eventually I will put on FBSD; for the time being, if
anyone else onlist has this model, please write off list.
Trying to find the best way to put on ktts.

Yeah mine was also pretty cheap, but thats why I bought it! I wiped the Xandros
distro off of it immediately and put Ubuntu netbook remix on it at first. Then
moved on to Freebsd. I've had FreeBSD on this machine for almost a year now.
Everything works well. The only problem I ran into was disk space as it only
has a 4gb ssd. I got around this by using a 8 gb sd card for my /usr
partition. From what I've read online there is also an additional usb slot on
the actual mother board, so you can use a micro usb key for storage there as
well. Although, I haven't checked so I'm not 100% positive on that. I'm
currently running 8.1-RELEASE with fluxbox, linux-opera(flash), and about 400
other packages. Wireless works great, I don't install from ports unless I
absolutely have to because it just takes so damn long to compile anything on
here. Anyways you're wanting to install ktts on your
machine(/usr/ports/accessibility/ktts)? I dont forsee you having any problems
using ktts on it.

i wasnt sure if id run into any compatiblity issues.. i have this server
running how i want, no issues, so, 32bit OS with 3GB ram will do...

Must be a hardware issue, too. I'm running 7.2/i386 on a P-III box, and

For Xorg all I did was pkg_add -r xorg and Im using Awesome WM, very
lightweight and quick.. But its not your typical WM.. Its a tiling WM, you
cant resize your windows.. really.. you organize your desktop window by
clicking in the right hand corner of the desktop.. This WM has grown on
me... give it a shot. The purpose of it, i guess, is to elimiate wasting
your time resizing your windows..

I wouldn't waste your time trying to find out who they are - just
block and move on. That site is probably a shared web hosting account
that was compromised by a bad php script - even if you successfully
complain (assuming it is a legit hoster that cares) and they do
something about it, there are thousands more.

This is the guide I used:

http://www.sshguard.net/docs/setup/firewall/pf/

I followed this section to block all brute attempts:

Add this line in the packet filtering (rules) section:

block in quick on $ext_if proto tcp from sshguard to any port 22 label
ssh bruteforce

Replace $ext_if with your WAN interface name if needed. Omit the proto tcp
and the to any port 22 segment if you want to block all the traffic from
attackers (not just ssh).

I really like this port, just keeps the logs from filling up..

Im not going to email their abuse desk just wishing that sshguard would do
what I expected it to do via the how to.. :(

Right, but did you do this part too?

http://www.sshguard.net/docs/setup/getlogs/syslog/

The part you mentioned sets up the table and has pf drop the
connection attempts, but you need to configure syslog to fill the
table with IPs of attackers.

Actually this was installed after the port completed:

yeaguy# grep sshg /etc/syslog.conf

But it is not exactly what the HOWTO ways, the HOWTO does not mention the
exec part.

Put this line high into this file:

auth.info;authpriv.info|/usr/local/sbin/sshguard

Could be that the docs are written for Linux or another version of
syslog. The port and the man page say include the exec, so I would go
with that.

Ok - if that isn't working, then check to see if your ftp server is
logging to syslog under auth or authpriv. If not you'll need to change
the setup to get the logs from the right place.

I do not see ftp going to auth:

yeaguy# grep -i pure /var/log/auth.log
yeaguy# grep -i ftp /var/log/auth.log
Oct 30 07:36:49 yeaguy sshd[74718]: subsystem request for sftp

Nov 2 08:46:14 yeaguy sshd[17241]: subsystem request for sftp
yeaguy#

But I dont have pure-ftp looking at pam so that makes sense right?
Probably wouldnt show up there then? I am doing virtual user for
pure-ftp.

Here is the passwd db for pure:

yeaguy# grep pure /etc/inetd.conf
ftp stream tcp nowait root /usr/local/sbin/pure-ftpd pure-ftpd -l
puredb:/usr/local/etc/pureftpd.pdb
yeaguy#

so i need to pipe the pure db to auth?

So i added this:

auth.info;authpriv.info;ftp.info/var/log/auth.log

This is existing:

ftp.info/var/log/xferlog

I see my failed attempts going to auth.log and sshguard is still not
blocking or logging..

I restarted both syslog and sshguard.. I feel like we are almost there

Great - then try:

ftp.info |exec /usr/local/sbin/sshguard

in your /etc/syslog.conf (don't forget to restart syslog) and it
should be working - I'm not sure what the threshold for sshguard to
block someone is, but you could test it - just make sure you have a
way to get back in if it works and your IP is blocked (or wait for the
next script kiddie).

Dont you need a Client when using IPERF??

If you want to see your current in/out in realtime try:

mediatomb and m3u issues

2010-10-28 Thread Justin V.

Hi,

This is for any mediatomb users.

I recently installed Mediatomb with mencoder.

Everything works solid on the video side of things.. I can stream video
from my FreeBSD machine to my PS3 without any issue.

The only issue I see is when I add my music to the mediatomb db.

I keep getting a segmentaion fault:

Oct 27 17:10:57 hbca kernel: pid 92235 (mediatomb), uid 1001: exited on
signal 11 (core dumped)

Soon as mediatomb crashes, I check the last file it crashed on, usually a
.m3u and remove that .m3u file and then it add the files to the db fine...

Anyone know of another workaround??

Thanks,

vic

Amavisd-new issues..

2010-10-27 Thread Justin V.

Hello,

I recently attempted to install amavisd-new along with clamd to scan

Here is the guide I used:

Everything goes fine until its time to start amavisd-new.

It just doesnt start and I do not see anything in the logs to indicate a
problem.

When I issue the command I see no errors, but do not see it running
when I check ps aux

4.5.4 Upgrading Ports (Handbook)

2010-10-22 Thread Justin Victoria

Hi,

I have a pretty simple question regarding upgrading ports.. I am
following the handbook Section 4.5.4..

Step 1:

pkg_version -v:

Ok done.. bunch of stuff needs updating:

Ex:

hbca# pkg_version -v | grep -v up-to-date with port
ImageMagick-6.6.3.10 needs updating (port has 6.6.4.10)
apache-2.2.16_2needs updating (port has 2.2.17_1)
avahi-app-0.6.25_3 needs updating (port has 0.6.27_2)
bison-2.4.1_1,1needs updating (port has 2.4.3,1)
bn-freebsd-doc-20100625needs updating (port has 20100926)
boost-libs-1.43.0 needs updating (port has 1.43.0_1)
cmake-2.8.2needs updating (port has 2.8.2_1)
consolekit-0.4.1_3 needs updating (port has 0.4.1_4)
cups-client-1.4.3 needs updating (port has 1.4.4)
da-freebsd-doc-20100625needs updating (port has 20100926)
dbus-1.2.24_1 needs updating (port has 1.2.24_2)
dbus-glib-0.86_1 needs updating (port has 0.88)
de-freebsd-doc-20100625needs updating (port has 20100926)
el-freebsd-doc-20100625needs updating (port has 20100926)
en-freebsd-doc-20100625needs updating (port has 20100926)
enchant-1.4.2 needs updating (port has 1.6.0)
es-freebsd-doc-20100625needs updating (port has 20100926)
feh-1.5needs updating (port has 1.8)
fr-freebsd-doc-20100625needs updating (port has 20100926)
freetype2-2.3.12 needs updating (port has 2.4.2)
gettext-0.18_1 needs updating (port has 0.18.1.1)
gio-fam-backend-2.24.1_1 needs updating (port has 2.24.2)

Step 2:

Update Ports collection: Ports collection updated everynite via cron job
and cvsup. Done...

Check /usr/ports/UPDATING..

This seems very time consuming considering i have a long list of ports
that need updating.. (can i safely skip this step?)

Step 3:

portupgrade installed, done

Step 4:

pkgdb -F

here it is:

hbca# pkgdb -F
--- Checking the package registry database
Stale origin: 'net/samba3': perhaps moved or obsoleted.
- The port 'net/samba3' was removed on 2010-10-18 because:
Has expired: Unsupported by the upstream. Please, consider to
upgrade.

- Hint: samba-3.0.37_1,1 is not required by any other package
- Hint: checking for overwritten files...
 - No files installed by samba-3.0.37_1,1 have been overwritten by other
packages.

Deinstall samba-3.0.37_1,1 ? [no] no
Duplicated origin: security/libgcrypt - libgcrypt-1.4.5_1 libgcrypt-1.4.6
Unregister any of them? [no] no
hbca#

So if i deinstall samba and unregister one of the duplicated origins for
libgcrypt will portupgrade reinstall them or fix this mess?

Thanks,

Justin

Re: 4.5.4 Upgrading Ports (Handbook)

2010-10-22 Thread Justin Victoria
Ok, so let me get this straight. Here is what Ive deduced using the
handbook:

Step 1: run pkg_version -v

will just stick with samba for now:

[...@hbca ~]$ pkg_version -v | grep -i samba
samba-3.0.37_1,1= up-to-date with index
samba34-libsmbclient-3.4.8 needs updating (port has 3.4.9)

pkg_version -v is telling me samba is up-to-date with index
samba34-libsmbclient-3.4.8 needs updating..

ok. step 2, check /usr/ports/UPDATING

hbca# grep samba-3.0.37 /usr/ports/UPDATING
hbca# grep -i samba-3.0.37 /usr/ports/UPDATING
hbca# grep -i samba34-lib /usr/ports/UPDATING
hbca# grep -i samba34 /usr/ports/UPDATING
  AFFECTS: users of net/samba34
hbca#
[...@hbca ~]$ grep 3.0.37 /usr/ports/UPDATING
[...@hbca ~]$

20100205:
  AFFECTS: users of net/samba34
  AUTHOR: ti...@freebsd.org

This port was developed with the generous help of Florent Brodin.

The default passdb backend has been changed to `tdbsam'! That breaks
existing setups using the `smbpasswd' backend without explicit
declaration! Please use `passdb backend = smbpasswd' if you would like
to stick to the `smbpasswd' backend or convert your smbpasswd entries
  using e.g. `pdbedit -i smbpasswd -e tdbsam'.

The `tdbsam' backend is much more flexible concerning per user
settings like `profile path' or `home directory' and there are some

No. UPDATING lists the exceptions and problems. You only have to check it

Go into the card 29320's BIOS and configure your tape drive for non-packetized

if it is possible to get things working in packetized mode.

I've been using transmission-daemon recently and I'm getting

Hi,

Does anyone know if FreeBSD has support for this card? I did some
searching around and looks like this card is based on the RALink
RT2860 chip. OpenBSD has drivers listed for it on this page:

http://www.openbsd.org.ua/i386.html
Section: Ralink Technology IEEE 802.11a/b/g PCI adapters (ral),
including: (B) (C)

If anyone has been able to get this card working, or knows how I could
get it working, please let me know. Your help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

Hi

2008-06-06 Thread Justin Archer
Hi, I have just purchased a new Dell Server, to run with Plesk. I have
just moved from an Apple XServe and seeing that OS X derived from
FreeBSD, I felt that it was the best choice to start with. My only
dilemma is, I am wanting to run the system in 64-bit, with using the
Intel Quad 2.5Ghz Xeon, but I am unsure as to which version I should
be downloading.

For plesk, I need to use version 6.1 and had read somewhere that I
would use the AMD 64-bit version, can you confirm if this is correct
for an Intel processor?

Many Thanks

No, the design of the rc system does not allow for rc.conf to alter the order
of the scripts executed, since rc.conf is loaded on a per-script basis and
the ordering is done based on 'comments' in the scripts themselves.

You can however, load an empty table with the appropreate name, then create
 an
rc script in /usr/local/etc/rc.d/ that fills the table with hostnames to
  solve your problem.

  Here's an example:

  /etc/rc.conf:
  pf_dyntables_enable=YES
  pf_dyntables_list=adservers

  /etc/pf.conf:
  table adservers persist

  /etc/pf/dynamic/adservers:
  cdn.fastclick.net
  ad.doubleclick.net
  # etc etc

  /usr/local/etc/rc.d/pf_dyntables:

  #!/bin/sh
  #
  # PROVIDE: pf_dyntables
  # REQUIRE: named pf ppp

  . /etc/rc.subr

  name=pf_dyntables
  rcvar=`set_rcvar`
  start_cmd=${name}_start
  stop_cmd=:

  load_rc_config $name

  : ${pf_dyntables_enable=NO}
  : ${pf_dyntables_dir=/etc/pf/dynamic}
  : ${pf_dyntables_list=NONE}

  pf_dyntables_start()
  {
if test x${pf_dyntables_list} != xNONE; then
   for table in ${pf_dyntables_list}; do
  echo Loading table $table
  cat ${pf_dyntables_dir}/${table} |/usr/bin/xargs \
 ${pf_program} -t ${table} -Tadd
   done
else
   echo hi
fi
  }

  run_rc_command $1

Intel Pro/Wireless 3945ABG - if_ipw not working

2007-05-18 Thread Justin Muir
Hello,

I load the module and I'm not getting the ipw0 device.
If I'm reading the instructions
(damien.bergamini.free.fr/ipw/ipw-freebsd.html)
correctly, I should be able to:

1. load the driver
2. see the ipw0 device
3. load the firmware into the device with ipwcontrol.

The if_ipw kernel module loads without errors.

I checked the device/driver under windows and that's
what it's showing - Intel Pro/Wireless 3945ABG, IRQ 17

I checked my dmesg output and there is a network
device with IRQ 17, but it states there is no driver
loaded.

Not sure what I'm doing wrong here

Any suggestions?

Thx,

atacontrol rebuild on non-identical disks

2007-04-06 Thread Justin Sullivan
We have a (very) remote FreeBSD 5.5-RELEASE system running on Asus RS120
hardware and historically configured with 2 identical SATA drives using
atacontrol RAID1 and the system installed on ar0.

One of the drives has died, however no identical replacement drive could
be easily sourced at the remote location.

So, attempting to get things back to normal RAID1 operation as quickly as
possible we have tried a same size but non-identical drive and attempted
an atacontrol rebuild. However, this is stuck indefinitely at 0% rebuild
progess.

While I'm aware that some RAID1 mechanisms e.g. CCD seem to insist on
identical disks, the documentation isn't so clear on ATA and I figured it
was worth a try. Does anyone know if it is possible to overcome the
non-identical disk issue and allow ata RAID1 to work again?

I've also considered keeping the current ar0 setup on the single working
disk and setting up a gmirror RAID1 copy on the second disk would work.

Current config info is as follows:

From atacontrol list:

ATA channel 2:
Master: ad4 WDC WD2000JD-00HBB0/08.02D08 Serial ATA v1.0
ATA channel 3:
Master: ad6 HDT722525DLA380/V44OA9BA Serial ATA v1.0

From the permanently going nowhere rebuild output of atacontrol status:

ar0: ATA RAID1 subdisks: ad4 ad6 status: REBUILDING 0% completed

The WDC WD2000JD on ad4 is the functional system drive and orignial member
of the RAID1 array. ad6 is the new spare and presumably is completely
blank still at this stage.

I realise that sourcing an identical drive is probably the right (or at
least easy) answer. The original drives (WDC WD2000JD on ad4) are still
available for purchase, just not anywhere near where the machine lives -
so getting a replacement drive would be a logistically difficult and
time-consuming exercise.

Thanks,
JS

Could someone tell me please why did I need to do this to get it fixed?

No idea here, but I believe I encountered the same issue under Gallery2

replying here in case anybody does a search...

Re: Tool for validating sender address as spam-fighting technique?

2007-03-11 Thread Justin Mason

for what it's worth, I would suggest *not* adopting this
as an anti-spam technique.

Sender-address verification is _bad_ as an anti-spam technique, in my
opinion. Basically, there's one obvious response for spammers looking to
evade it -- use real sender addresses. Where's an easy place to find
real addresses? On the list of target addresses they're spamming!

Hence, the spam recipients now get twice as much mail from each spam run
-- spam aimed at them, *and* bounce blowback from hundreds of spams aimed
at others, forged to appear to be from them. It's the obvious response to
SAV, which is one reason why we never implemented something like that in
SpamAssassin.

Kelly Jones writes:
To fight spam, I want to validate the address (not necessarily in
real-time) of the a given email sender. Is there a Unix tool that does
 this?

The basics are simple: to validate [EMAIL PROTECTED], I connect to
the MX record of wnonline.net and go as far as RCPT TO as follows:

  host -t mx wnonline.net
 wnonline.net mail is handled by 5 wnspf.bayou.com.

  telnet wnspf.bayou.com. 25
 Trying 209.209.192.75...
 Connected to wnspf.bayou.com..

 220 Welcome to Bayou mxfilter
 HELO domaintester.com
 250 mxfilter.bayou.com
 MAIL FROM: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
 250 Ok
 RCPT TO: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
550 [EMAIL PROTECTED]: Recipient address rejected: 5.1.1
 [EMAIL PROTECTED]... User unknown
 QUIT
 221 Bye
 Connection closed by foreign host.

This tells me [EMAIL PROTECTED] is an invalid address and that mail
from that address is probably bogus.

A more sophisticated tool would cache results, handle temporary
failures (eg, inability to connect to the MX server), handle multiple
MX records, perhaps even publish results [carefully, to avoid giving
spammers a source of legit email addresses!], etc. Plus, I'd prefer to
use a tested tool vs hacking something up myself.

I realize this technique is far from perfect:

 Spammers spoof legit addresses

Bounces/Mailing lists/etc legitimately use do not reply addresses

It could be considered unfriendly to the target MX servers

Some mail servers incorrectly say user unknown when they see spam,
figuring it's more of a deterrent than saying you're a spammer

Some mail servers inefficiently accept mail for [EMAIL PROTECTED] (where
xxx.com is one of their domains), figure out if foo exists later, and
send a bounce back to the envelope sender, instead of rejecting email
at the SMTP level (a really good tool would create throwaway addresses
 to catch these cases too)

... but I still think it might help.

samba read failure for 4. Error = Operation timed out

2007-02-26 Thread Justin Schlingmann

Hello,

I have a samba server running on my freebsd 5.5 machine.
I installed samba-2.2.12_2 and i get this log error message.

[2007/02/20 15:50:19, 0] lib/util_sock.c:read_data(436)
read_data: read failure for 4. Error = Operation timed out

I get this message in my /var/log/messages.
I`ve been looking for over three weeks now and i can`t seem to find the
reason for this error message.
I`ve disbled oplocks on my windows machine but that doesn`t help me in
fixing this problem.
i put oplocks = no
level2 oplocks = no
locking =yes
kernel oplocks = no in my /usr/local/etc/smb.conf but the
error log keeps appearing.
Is there any one who can help me with this problem.
Is there anyone who has had the same error message???

Thanks in adcance,
Justin Schlingmann.

Can't upgrade misc/shared-mime-info

2007-02-20 Thread Justin Meyer
Hi all,

I'm not sure if this should go to -ports, so I thought I'd start here.

As part of a portupgrade, shared-mime-info-0.19 is supposed to be
upgraded to -0.20. This is failing w/ a linker error, apparently like
this:

cc -O -pipe -march=athlon-xp -Wall -Wstrict-prototypes
-Wmissing-prototypes -Wwrite-strings -L/usr/local/lib -o
update-mime-database update_mime_database-
update-mime-database.o -L/usr/local/lib -lxml2 -lglib-2.0 -liconv
/usr/local/lib/libxml2.so: undefined reference to `pthread_equal'
gmake[1]: *** [update-mime-database] Error 1
gmake[1]: Leaving directory
`/usr/ports/misc/shared-mime-info/work/shared-mime-info-0.20'
gmake: *** [check-recursive] Error 1
*** Error code 2

Stop in /usr/ports/misc/shared-mime-info.

What's bugging me here is that libxml2.so is *not* linked against
pthread:

# ldd /usr/local/lib/libxml2.so
/usr/local/lib/libxml2.so:
 libz.so.3 = /lib/libz.so.3 (0x282bf000)
 libiconv.so.3 = /usr/local/lib/libiconv.so.3 (0x282d)
 libm.so.4 = /lib/libm.so.4 (0x283c)

... although strings shows me that there are nonetheless at least
references to pthread_* functions in there:

# strings /usr/local/lib/libxml2.so.5 |grep pthread_
pthread_mutex_init
pthread_mutex_destroy
pthread_mutex_lock
pthread_mutex_unlock
pthread_cond_init
pthread_cond_destroy
pthread_self
pthread_equal
...

I made a point of forcing a recompile of libxml2, making sure that I
wasn't defining WITH_THREADS. Still no dice, so what gives?

Can anyone tell me:

1) what's going on, and how to fix it? Or
2) what more info could I usefully provide about my system? or
3) that this should definitely go to -ports? :)

Thanks!

Re: Packet rate limiter

2007-02-07 Thread Justin Robertson
Newp. You're stuck to good old bps with ipfw or bps/cpse (connections
per second established) with pf. The other method would be to use cisco
netflow export data from a router being polled - then limiting traffic
with one of the methods mentioned above... or just place pps limits on
your router itself.

I`ve searched a lot of web, but nothing interesting found (for PF,

6.x, 4.x ipfw/dummynet pf/altq - network performance issues

2007-02-05 Thread Justin Robertson

So, this may be the wrong list to post to, but it seemed the most
appropriate. If someone could suggest a better location to move/cross
post to let me know.

I've been running some tests with using FreeBSD to filter and rate
limit traffic. My first thoughts were to goto the latest stable release,
which was 6.1 at the time. I've since done the same test under 6.2 and
haven't seen any difference. I later migrated to running 4.11 to get
away from these issues, but have discovered others.

I've tested on an AMD 3200+ system with dual Intel 1000 series NICs, an
AMD Opteron 165 with the same, and a Xeon 2.8 with the same. I've used
both stock and intel drivers.

6.x;
Normal traffic isn't a problem. The second you get into the realm of
abusive traffic, such a DoS/DDoS (over 100mbps) UDP floods the machine
falls over. Little packets with ip lengths of 28-29 bytes seem to do the
most damage. I've tried playing with various sysctl values and have seen
no difference at all. By falls over I mean stops sending all traffic
in any direction. TCP syn packets have the same effect, tho not quite
as rapidly (200~230mbps). I then tried moving filtering off to a
transparent bridge. This improved the situation somewhat, but an extra
30-40mbps of UDP data and it would ultimately crumble. Overall the
machine would be able to move between 300k-600k PPS before becoming a
cripple, depending on packet length, protocol, and any flags. Without a
specific pf or ipfw rule to deal with a packet the box would fall over,
with specific block rules it would manage an extra 30-40mbps and then
fall over.

4.11;
Again, normal traffic isn't a problem. When routing filtering on the
same system some of the problems found in 6.x are still apparent, but to
a lesser degree. Splitting the task into a transparent filtering bridge
with a separate routing box appears to clear it up entirely. UDP floods
are much better handled - an ipfw block rule for the packet type and the
machine responds as if there were no flood at all (until total bandwidth
saturation or PPS limits of the hardware, which in this case was around
950Mbps). TCP syn attacks are also better handled, again a block rule
makes it seem as if there were no attack at all. The system also appears
to be able to move 800-900k PPS of any one protocol at a time. However,
the second you try and queue abusive traffic the machine will fall over.
Inbound floods appear to cause ALL inbound traffic to lag horrifically
(while rate limiting/piping), which inherently causes a lot of outbound
loss due to broken TCP. Now, I'm not sure if this is something to do
with dummynet being horribly inefficient, or if there's some sysctl
value to deal with inbound that I'm missing.

I suppose my concerns are two-fold. Why is 6.x collapsing under traffic
that 4.11 could easily block and run merrily along with, and is there a
queueing mechanism in place that doesn't tie up the box so much on
inbound flows that it ignores all other relevant traffic?

(as a note, all tests were done with device polling enabled. Without it
systems fall over pretty quickly. I also tried tests using 3com cards
and had the same results)

I've actually already done everything you've suggested with little or no

On the 6.x box, try enabling adding to /etc/sysctl.conf

kern.polling.enable=1
net.inet.ip.fastforwarding=1
kern.polling.idle_poll=1
kern.random.sys.harvest.ethernet=0

and in /boot/loader.conf, add

kern.hz=2000

Also removing

options ADAPTIVE_GIANT # Giant mutex is adaptive.

from the kernel helps a bit as well.

with
kern.polling.idle_poll=1

your load avg will be messed up but it should help performance a bit.

As for firewall rules, things really seem to fall down performance
wise, as compared to RELENG_4. I havent found a way to improve that
performance However, on the plus side, an extra core does seem to
help a bit with the box remaining responsive. For NICs, stay with em
or bge nics for now in RELENG_6

I have some misc test results at http://www.tancsa.com/blast.html

The handbook says it all has to do with the interupt driven

I have to switch to the polled mode.

Gnome 2 - Fuzziness

2006-09-05 Thread Justin
Greetings,

Installed FreeBSD 6.1R on a clean system over the weekend, and installed the
gnome2 port from the ports tree (after cvsup'ing). Everything installed
great, no errors. Ran the xorg configure from the handbook, went over good,
background and cursor came up sharp. So, I enabled gdm, and rebooted. Once
rebooted, X started, which the cursor was crisp, but when the Gnome login
window appeared, it was very fuzzy. I could barely make out the window.

Is there some configuration step I missed in gnome or X? Where would be a
good start to read up on Gnome? And finally, is there a better full X
desktop to use?

RAID Repair

2006-07-31 Thread Justin
Greetings,

I may be in the wrong place, but I believe the best help to be found for
anything technical is this group of people, so here goes:

I have a Promise FastTrak S150 TX2 (older PCI SATA/RAID controller), with 2
Maxtor 80GB HDDs connected to it. These HDDs were in a system running XP,
but the client lost the RAID configuration (unplugged drives to upgrade
memory, plugged back in, XP recognized the drives, but as single drives).
The drives were set up as a stripe (RAID 0).

I have put this card and drives into my FBSD 6.1 Release system, and of
course, BSD recognized the RAID right away, and has it under /dev/ar0.

My question is: Is there a way to scan the RAID, and recover the NTFS
partition? I've Google'd, but only come up with half results claiming that
a dd script can be written, reading 64K chunks off of each drive and
rebuilding a complete image. I also have a 250GB HDD on a separate
controller that is currently blank where I can rebuild this image if needed.

If someone with more experience could advise me on the best way to proceed,
I'd be most grateful!

Everytime when I install freebsd 6.1 and boot it after instalation I get
this message.
unable to load a kernel
When i install freebsd 5.5 there are no problems, everything works fine.
Anyone knows what`s wrong with this installation, is it a known bug or what.
Maybe someone can help me with this, should I fetch a new 6.1 instalation
disk or is there another problem.

Thanks in advance,
Justin.

General Non-critical: FreeBSD media releases

2006-05-27 Thread Justin T. Wert

To Whom It May Concern:

Are there any plans to release a DVD version of all 3 of your
media CDs combined? I tried searching the web on how to combine the media
into one DVD, but have failed to find a site that has a working method. My
personal attempts have the same issue, where it asks for disc 2 even
though the files are available on the DVD. Do you know a procedure to do
this correctly, or have DVD release available?

 Thank you in advance,

6.1 CD is Hanging on Install

2006-05-19 Thread Justin

Hello,

I'm trying to venture into the world of BSD. Thus, I have just
recently joined the mailing list and this is my first message. I have
tried to research my question and found a similar problem, but I was
unable to find any type of solution.

Here's What's Happening:

After I boot my laptop to the installer CD and select what I'd like to
boot (I've tried the default, no acpi, and safe mode with the same
results), the installer seems to lock up the computer after the
following two lines:

Timecounter TSC frequency 1600070929 Hz quality 800
 Timecounters tick every 1.000 msec

At this point the computer responds to nothing but holding down the
power button, which obviously kills the power. Just in case it was
trying to work something out (after all, the thinking light was on),
I let my laptop sit for almost four hours with still no change.

I have used Debian and Fedora on this computer previously with no
problems (and obviously Windows works also).

Since there are really no other options as far as booting goes, I
really don't know what I've done wrong or what I can do.

Just is case it helps, here is some information about my system:
Compaq Presario M2105US
 AMD Mobile Sempron processor
 1GB RAM
ATI Express 200M graphics card w/ shared memory

Also, I've tried to use the 2CD set and Boot Only CD for the i386.

Thanks in advance for your help.

I `ve got a question about installing the php5 module.
I`m installing it from the /usr/ports/www/php5-session port.

Everything runs ok and it seems like the module is installed.
There is only one problem, in the httpd.conf there is a LoadModule
php5_module refering to libexec/apache/libphp5.so.

The library libphp5.so is not made by the install and so my appache will
not start with the php5 enabled.

What is wrong and what can i do to let the install make the libphp5.so.

Ok thanks in advance,
Justin.

newfs fails on 300GB HDD

2006-04-09 Thread Justin P. Michel
Greetings,

I'm having a slight problem with a 300GB IDE (Maxtor) HDD. Basically, I've
run the drive on the system through a complete low-level format and test
with the PowerMAX tools, which passed fine. The BIOS recognizes and
auto-detects the drive okay as well.

However, in trying to install FreeBSD 6.0, it goes through the partition
section okay, and then the slice section okay (trying to use a full slice on
the drive as /dumpdata), the mount fails, and on the alternate screen it
shows newfs failing.

Is there a special way to get this drive to work? Does someone have
experience with a similar setup that may shed some light my way? I feel
like a beginner all over again. : P

Regards,

Justin

PHP junk pointer error with imagick.so

2006-01-20 Thread Justin Meyer
Hi All,

I recently noticed running a phpinfo() page that the page would not
completely render. When I looked in /var/log/httpd-errors.log, I found
the following error every time I hit that page:

[Fri Jan 20 10:53:08 2006] [notice] child pid 88217 exit signal Abort
trap (6)
httpd in free(): error: junk pointer, too high to make sense

After successively commenting and uncommenting each extension I have for
php, I finally found the culprit extension to be imagick.so. I found the
commit message for ImageMagick 6.2.5.5 at
http://www.freshports.org/graphics/ImageMagick/ suggesting that there
were segfaults with earlier versions, and so on a hunch I did a
portupgrade -rf ImageMagick.

No dice; I still can't load the imagick.so extension to php without
running into these junk pointer errors.

FYI, here's the (I think) relevant ports I have installed:

apache+mod_ssl-1.3.34+2.8.25_2 ImageMagick-6.2.5.5 php4-4.4.2
php4-extensions-1.0 pecl-imagick-0.9.11_3

Has anyone else encountered this issue? Does anyone have any suggestions
as to how I might resolve it?

Thanks!

I have similar problems with imagick and also with xslt. These two
modules make php segfault e.g. when installing pear-ports. The problem
seems to exist only on machines with ldap-setup (nss_ldap, pam_ldap). Do
you run your machine with nss_ldap?

Oh hell no; I'm not into that kind of pain :) Just plain ol' /etc/passwd
here, thanks!

Solutions? I have mailed the php-maintainer about the problem but got
no response. I don't think it would help to additionally make a PR, so
for me there are 2 possible ways to solve this:

 1) don't use imagick or xslt

Well, in truth I don't *need* this module, just thought it'd be useful,
but still, this bugs the shit out of me...

 2) don't use FreeBSD for PHP-development

.. b-b-but I *like* FreeBSD! Nope, not gonna abandon this platform. If I
don't hear from anyone else anytime soon, I'll take this to -ports and
see what they say.

Thanks, Uwe; at least I know I'm not alone :)

Some files didn't get uploaded from the machine which performs the
portsnap builds to the mirrors due to a network outage (note to
self: I need to handle problems like this better!)

I've manually copied the missing files into the appropriate places
and everything should be working again now.

Indeed, portsnap fetch just completed successfully for me. Thank you,

Problems rebuilding world

2005-12-17 Thread Justin Pessa
I'm rebuilding world to upgrade from 5.4 to 6.0 on my laptop. The
original build worked find then crapped out when running install world
with an error saying that /usr/share/locale/uk_UA.CP1251/LC_COLLATE
could not be found. So now I can't load any additional applications
because almost everything segfaults.

I removed my /usr/src directory and cvsup'd everything fresh. I can
build my 6.0 kernel without problem but I get the following make error
when building world:

 === share/termcap (all)
gzip -cn /usr/src/share/termcap/termcap.5 termcap.5.gz
TERM=dumb TERMCAP=dumb: ex - /usr/src/share/termcap/termcap.src
/usr/src/share/termcap/reorder
cap_mkdb -l termcap
cap_mkdb: illegal option -- l
usage: cap_mkdb [-v] [-f outfile] file [file ...]

I know this is related to my original the borked partial installworld.
I'm stumped as to what I should try from here. Any thoughts?

Please CC me on your response. Thanks a lot!

Dual-core processors and FreeBSD 6.0

Hello,
I would like to know if FreeBSD 6.0 supports dual-core CPU chips. Note,
dual-core is different from dual CPU.
On Jun. 13, 2005 PT Wired magazine explained a dual-core CPU as the following in a
article titled The New Chips on the Block
A dual-core processor differs from a single-core chip in that it has two physical computer processing unit, or CPU, cores on a
single die.

Build world to only make and install the user install from sysinstall.

2005-12-14 Thread Justin L. Boss
Okay if you think that subject was confusing this is totally confusing to me.
I'm trying to do a Makeworld that will only install the user distributions

games and base. So how do you know what source to install to = the user
distributions install. Or do you install all the source and then just use
NO_=yes in your make.conf. If so which ones do you use? Maybe a better
question would be which NO_=YES do i include in my make.conf to only
build and install the user distributions from the sysinstall. Thanks for any

HBA support

Can you please advise which HBA's will work within the FreeBSD OS.

We are primarily interested in Emulex and QLogic cards. If you could
supply which models are supported that would be most appreciated.

Cheers

 Justin,

How about trying this, you have the most recent version of openssl
installed in base due to the upgrade to 6.0 - release.

If you have the OpenSSL port installed why don't you uninstall the port
and place the following in your /etc/make.conf file

 WITH_OPENSSL_BASE=yes

This will force all ports you install going foward to use the base
install of OpenSSL and not to install OpenSSL as a dependency from ports.

You could then make deinstall, make install clean make distclean any
port that requires OpenSSL, Ruby for instance.

This should make it build with the base install, eliminating the version
 conflict.

That seems to have done the trick, Russell; the script works again!
Thank you very much for the suggestions :)

Should I have 2 copies of OpenSSL?

2005-11-17 Thread Justin Meyer
Hi Folks,

I've got a 6.0-STABLE box here that I've upgraded from sources serveral
times, from all the way back from 5.0 (and maybe from 4.x; I honestly
can't remember at this point...) I'm fairly sure I followed directions
properly along the way, because I always got everything working again
after each upgrade.

Except this time, a Ruby script using Ruby's 'http-access2' module
started throwing odd OpenSSL exceptions. After poking a bit, I found the
following:

 ttyp3 [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~/code/ruby $ /usr/bin/openssl version
OpenSSL 0.9.7e-p1 25 Oct 2004
 ttyp3 [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~/code/ruby $ /usr/local/bin/openssl version
OpenSSL 0.9.8a 11 Oct 2005

I guess the one in /usr/bin came with the system, and the one in
/usr/local/bin came from ports:

 ttyp3 [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~/code/ruby $ pkg_info|grep openssl
openssl-0.9.8a SSL and crypto library

What gives? Is the way things should be? Or did I foul something up
somewhere along the way through my upgrades? If I did mess something up,
what should I do to fix it?

Thank you!

  That doesn't mean

  we do have a
significant issue just reproducing the problem. We
  have a number of
  choices:

  1. Try different hardware or a different version of

conceivable that there's something about your
  specific hardware,
or about the combination of i386 kernel on amd64
  in general, that
  triggers the problem.

Yes possible. However the same hardware was used for
the earlier version machine that worked fine. IE
Freebsd 5.1-RELEASE-P11 and Mysql 4.0.18 worked on the
 same hardware.

  2. Do debugging on your production servers. This
  isn't really a
choice at all: it would involve even more down
  time.

   Yea not really an option.

  3. Get you to run a more stable version of FreeBSD
  while we
investigate the problem. This is the method we
  chose. I haven't
heard from you since the weekend, so I hope I'm
  correct in
understanding that you currently don't have
  stability problems.
On our side, we have installed FreeBSD 5.4 on
  one of our internal
machines, and we're trying to reproduce the
  problem there.

So far we have had only one crash that seemed to have
been SCSI related. So far it has not happend again.
One problem with replication that was a coding issue.

We were running fine but a little slow on FreeBSD
  5.1-P11 and MySQL
4.0.18.(apperantly before a big Lib change) We had
  to move quicker
than we wanted to a new server running FreeBSD 5.4
  and MySQL 4.11
(becouse of a dual HD death) Under production load
  the new 5.4
server fell over regulary. It has only now become
  stable by wiping
it and running it on FreeBSD 4.11 with Linux
  Threads. (it regularly
   has over 400+ threads)

Kris obviously understood that by this statement you
  meant a kernel
crash. My understanding is that only the mysqld
  server is crashing.
  Is this still correct?

Yes only Mysqld would crash. Sometimes brb and
autorestart with minimal damage. Other times it would
die a horrible death and damage tons of data on its
 way out.

I want to try FreeBSD 5.4 AMD64 (the machines are
  Opteron) or 6.0
but my boss feels that would be a waste given that
  MYSQL doesn't
support Mysql on AMD64 well enough.

I think it would be a good idea to try this. It's
  one of the things
that we intend to do in-house as soon as we can
  reproduce the problem
  at all.

Yes however as I pointed out.. Just Trying things on
a production database is not desirable without some
serious indicators that its worthwhile. Last you wrote
you said you doubted that would do anything I believe.
Also support for amd64 based mysql is listed as
Limited. As you said reproducing the problem is the
 key.
However as I suggested I would have thought that if
mysql were really into solving the problem, someone
would have requested a login on the box to look at our
queries to see how they are. Are they 60% reads 40%
writes, are they many divergent queries bundled
together.. etc. IE come and see our production
database in action to see what needs to be replicated.

I haven't seen anything like this. Now I don't know
much but to me if I can't replicate something it's
becouse I don't know enough about it.

Can anyone help or offer assistance to help track
  this down? Perhaps
also any annecdotes or examples I can show my boss

Re: Mysql server not able to stay running on anything but Linux?

2005-10-12 Thread Justin Bastedo
Here at my work we are running a mysql 5.0 server on FreeBSD 5.4 using
the AMD Dual Core 64 chips.

current load is as follows:
[MYSQL]
Uptime: 1338832 Threads: 2 Questions: 15846788 Slow queries: 0 Opens:
0 Flush tables: 16 Open tables: 58 Queries per second avg: 11.836

[FREEBSD TOP]
last pid: 29924; load averages: 0.00, 0.00, 0.00 up 35+01:59:20 16:24:01
49 processes: 1 running, 48 sleeping
CPU states: 0.5% user, 0.0% nice, 0.5% system, 0.0% interrupt, 99.0% idle
Mem: 156M Active, 1250M Inact, 176M Wired, 214M Buf, 2086M Free
Swap: 2048M Total, 44K Used, 2048M Free

Versions:
mysql -V
mysql Ver 14.12 Distrib 5.0.12-beta, for portbld-freebsd5.4 (amd64) using 4.3

uname -a
FreeBSD db 5.4-RELEASE-p7 FreeBSD 5.4-RELEASE-p7 #0: Wed Sep 7

Our queries per second avg has been going up consistently and we have
yet to have any problems. We haven't had any crashing though I can't
quite say how the thread level is comparing to yours.

I agree i would look into upgrading to 5.4-STABLE and see how that treats you.

As far as my experience the only real advantages I've found that linux
has over FreeBSD is the type of file systems. Some of the file systems
they support may give better performance to particular types of table
types, but that is more if you have a stable db server that is hitting
a bottle neck.
