[Audyssey] Three-D Velocity!
Hello, I downloaded three-d velocity's March 2010 package yesterday and installed it. I'm embarassed to say i initially crashed a lot, smile people around here tend to call me the suicide captain, but i'm starting to get the hang of it. Is there any information that i missed on an official release? Thanks. When we look at games to day, how far technology has come, it is easy to dismiss what a huge impact a game like Packman had on modern day video games. How that one single game changed the way we saw vidio gaming in the early 1980's. For one thing in the late 1970's and early 1980's the concept of home computers were in their infancy and if you had a 1 MHZ processor and 180 KB of ram you were doing great. As a result Atari's first home console, the Atari 2600, was a true marvel of its day, but the graphics technology was terrible. All of the early games for the console such as Combat, Pong, Demon Attack, Atlantice, Cosmic Ark, etc were all in black and white. Even the very shape of the tanks, demons, spaceships, etc were very crudely drawn. The graphics technology was that bad. However, Packman would soon change all that in a hurry. By 1980 though Activision, Atari, Namco, and other third-party game developers began to launch a new wave of arcade games with color graphics. One of these new games, soon to become an instant hit, was Packman. Unlike previous games for the Atari it featured 16 color graphics, much more detailed graphics, and an extremely adictive game as well. the game was simple where you used the joystick to move a little yellow ball around, that had eyes and a big mouth on it, eating dots. Little ghosts would chase you around and if you had a power pill you could scare the ghosts off or eat them. Before you knew it Packman was the latest craze. There were songs like Packman Feavor on the radio. There were Saturday morning cartoons about Packman. There were Packman comic books. There were Packman toys in the toy stores. If you went to Pizza Hut to order a pizza I remember they had a table top version of Packman you could sit down at and play until your pizza arrived. Packman was everywhere you looked. As for me personally I had a huge amount of Packman stuff of my own.I had a Packman ball plus a few little rubber Packman figures that are probably worth a king's randsome now. My bed sheets were Packman sheets. My very first video game was Packman. It was Packman feavor in deed. Although, I grew up and Packman is something from my early childhood I still hold a place in my heart for the little yellow guy. Although, I'd say my fondmess for the game has more to do with simple nostalgia rather than it being a novelty these days. However, thing is when my son was a baby I saw these hand held games by Activision, and one of them had Packman on it. I purchased it for my son, Sean, who absolutely loves the game now. Packman is now a family favorite just by being passed down from father to son. It really is a good, clean, and fun game for children. It is the kind of simple but fun game everyone can enjoy no matter how old you are. So when Phil put out Packman Talks I think it was a good decision on his part. I know there are plenty of blind gamers who may have lived through that era, but wasn't able to be a part of the fun and experience the game first hand. For those gamers Packman Talks is a chanse to do what they should have been able to do 30 years ago. For me it is a chanse to revisit an old friend called Packman after I'm all grown up now. Smile. sadly, I don't think many people are interested else I would've posted this info. I did all of regular sfiv's trials a while back, and am now working on super so if anyone wishes to discuss them or has/wants tips on any of them let me know! more people should definitely try them in my opinion. they range from real easy to extremely frustrating to the point they're almost impossible to pull off, but this is definitely part of the challenge, and I've always enjoyed a challenge! if anyone wants to try these I recommend you start with T-Hawk's trials. I finished them rather quickly and they're definitely the easiest in the game. also for people doing these I also recommend you keep checklists of which trials you've left to complete. it's possible to skip around this time so you'll end up forgetting what you still need unless you do this. Hi Yohandy. I for one am very interested in this and other console info. I agree with you that this type of thing is a good thing for us to get into and it's a shame that more of us don't. Granted the ps3's are a lot of money to lay out I just got mine fairly recently. Did you get my email off-list? If not I will send it again. I am currently working on ssfiv myself, working on learning the combos and such. Making limited progress but it is really really fun. Have you written out or memorized the character grid and menus yet? If so I would be interested in that info as well. I have the main menu pretty much down but my info is sketchy once I get into the character grid and the other menus. Thanks. DynaMan Version 2.2.6. where you encounter the menacing Sparks Brothers in the Power Grids. from Draconis. and, Armadillo Army Help Tex evade armadillos while gathering prizes in this game made for blind or low vision players. uses images and special sounds to guide you around the maze. from, Larry Skutchan's American Printing House for the Blind. --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. Re: [Audyssey] trials guide
I actually had to get people to read me the kombo challenges in mk cause there was never a guide made for it. least I never found one, I'd be interested to know if you have though since I wouldn't mind doing them all over. they were actually fun. you're right though these are funner I think, mostly due to the fact that kombo challenges were quite glitched at times. for the Ryu trials I'm missing 21, 22 and 24. Re: [Audyssey] trials guide
yup, I have that one. if you have a title and icon I believe you press L1 and it has options to set things. since you can't see what you're selecting you'll have to pick random stuff and see what happens lol. Just so you know one of the trophies is for doing all trials, so getting good at trials is the only way we'll ever get plat. good news is that the more trials you do the more little tricks you start to discover to make things a lot easier, so be sure and contact me if you get stuck to save lots of time and headache for some of these lol. hey we could even get stuck on trials together and both enjoy tossing our controller through the nearest window hahahaha. do let me know how the trials are going though. I actually keep a bunch of sf documents with all sorts of stats to keep track of lol. - Original Message - From: clement chou chou.clem...@gmail.com To: Gamers Discussion list gamers@audyssey.org Sent: Saturday, May 22, 2010 8:47 PM Subject: [Audyssey] Fw: trials guide - Original Message - From: clement chou To: brandonsl...@freelists.org Sent: Wednesday, May 19, 2010 11:00 PM Subject: trials guide So for all interested, there's a challenge mode guide for SFIV, both editions. So if you have the original SFiv instead of super, it's okay... you still have a guide at your disposal. Just look on gamefaqs under the faqs section for each game under indepth. Just a tip for anyone who wants to try these out. Smile.

[Audyssey] a really neat idea I had for learning songs in games such as rock band.
I'm basing this email on rock band since I don't have much experience with guitar hero, although it will probably work similarly. ok here's the problem. we want to learn how to play rock band preferably on expert, on our instrument of choice. the big issue? it can be rather difficult to figure out the chart since we're blind. huge problem right there lol. possible solution? record the stems for the instrument and figure out the note charting by ear. I don't know about you guys, but my problem isn't strumming, or even figuring out the notes, my problem is figuring out what a really difficult song is supposed to sound like so I could figure out the buttons for the thing. how many of you have a perfect note by note representation of let's say panic attacks solo in your head? bet not many people do. and if you can't figure out what it sounds like, you can't play it on rock band. So my idea is a simple one. let us rb players get together and record some instrument stems since harmonix is unlikely to provide them to us. this should be easily accomplished by choosing practice, setting the game to whichever difficulty you're comfortable with, then set it to 50% speed and record the guitar track in sections. this will make it a lot easier to learn songs on expert or any difficulty as a matter of fact. did this email make sense to anyone, and are you guys interested? we'll need people to help with stem recordings, and preferably a site to host them. remember these stems would have to be perfect else there's not much point, but since we'll be recording each individual section it should be no problem for most songs. this is the craziest idea I've had in a while, and I'll admit a brute force method of doing things, not to mention that it sounds like a pretty insane and time consuming task even to me, but I hope you guys like it and help out. I can put up a sample if people are scratching their heads in confusion and didn't understand a thing I just wrote lol. --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. Re: [Audyssey] Future of Audio Games
Hi Dave, Actually, the sounds can be very close. Take, for example, the Pac Man table in ESP Pinball Classic, also the version of Super Mario Brothers that Dragon Slayer games came out with, the only thing that irritated me was that I could not use the original music, plus it wasn't that good--but that's another story. I've been out of the blind gaming realm for a little while, something to do with time, but i'm back. And I've been reading up on this thread, it seems to be all over the place. I'd like to comment on two points. First the Section 508 is government and it to my understanding means that any government-purchased application such as Microsoft Word just as an example, must utilize features so that assistive technologies can work with them. Note, this does not mean the app is accessible to all, for example, I know a friend who works for the IRS where they use a database application. Using said app with her screen reader Jaws, is a nightmare to the point of unusability, but the app is still considered section 508 because she can use a Braille display. The second point i'd like to comment on is game sounds. I agree with both Thomas and Phil, I think they both have valid points. For me game sounds need to be realistic or as realistic as possible. If we're talking like something like a game based loosely on a commercial product, the sounds probably won't be exactly the same and i understand that, but for those cases if i've grown up playing a particular game in that case i'd want it as close to the original as not crossing a copyright line would let me get. Another option might be game sound packs, although this could get confusing. I think there's one out there or maybe it's integrated by now, in to SoundRTS. Just my two cents. Dave. I did not want to use only the original Pacman sounds as the Pacman Talks game was developed over twenty years after those sounds were picked for the original Pacman game in 1980. Some people like only the original sounds as they grew up playing them just like they only like the type of music they listen to as a teenager. I know from first hand experience that companies like Nintendo furiously protect their copyrights and it is illegal to use copyrighted games and characters like Mario in a game. The ADA has nothing to do with it here. In fact, I often hear blind gamers constantly spout off going after mainstream game companies using the ADA and other similar laws, but they fail to understand one major thing. They don't have the rights they think they have when it comes to software like games. For example, in 2001 the U.S. updated the ADA with section 508 that made it manditory that software that was to be used by the government or a blind employee in the work place had to be made accessible. This means any operating system such as Windows, Linux, Mac, etc had to be fully accessible. This also includes any office applications like databases, spreadsheet applications, word processors, and so on has to be accessible to the blind. For the most part a large majority of those types of applications have been updated and have been made accessible since the amendment was passed. However, what section 508 does not say is that every single software application out there has to be accessible. Only those that apply to your job. As it happens games are strictly entertainment. They have no place in the work place so the ADA has nothing to say about them. They simply are not covered, and none of us have the millions to take Sony, Nintendo, Microsoft, Edos, E.A. Games, etc to ccourt and demand they make their titles accessible. They'll laugh us out of court, and the ADA doesn't legally apply here. You might eventually win a descrimination suit, but are you willing to put up the thousands or perhaps millions to take it to court and fight it? Hi Dark, Everyone I know has problems with Monkey Business because of the poor navigation aids. I don't exactly have an easy time of it either, but have learned enough of it to get around after some painful trial and error. Thing is Monkey Business is a poor example of an accessible FPS type game. Something like Shades of Doom is a more accessible example of a really good FPS type game, and in fact my Genesis Engine will have many of the same navigation aids as Shades of Doom and Sarah as that seams to be what works for most people. Only mine will have a 3d aspect to it rather than a 2d aspect. One thing I have learned from Monkey Business is always give a customer a demo version to try before they buy. I think if I would have played a demo of it before hand I would not have purchased it either. However, I haven't regretted the purchase just felt it could have been done a whole lot better. On 5/23/10, dark d...@xgam.org wrote: I must confess Monkey business is a rare example of a game I slightly regret buying, in fact had there been a demo I don't know if I would given how profoundly terrible I am with the game due to my problem conceptualizing spaces and the emprecise nature of the 3D navigation. That being said though, I certainly don't think Draconis should automatically release their stuff as freeware, in fact arguing that a company should basically give their work away just because it doesn't seem as good as some later work seems rather wrong, - sinse by that logic it would be fairly hard for anyone to make any money producing games. In cases like Dan Z games, the products are released not as freeware, but abandonware, ie, the company no longer supports them. There will be no efforts made to make them compatible, and should they cause chickens to fly out of your harddrive of your computer to turn into a giant mushroom, the company aren't responsable, what you've been smoking would probably be responssable in that case ;D. Re: [Audyssey] Where have all the developers gone?
Hi Dark, Yeah--I particular like the synthesis background. I'm still trying to get the resources straight--in order to make a profit, you have to buy them, then sell them, and make it back to your base without using SOS, teleport, or a space truck? Best Regards, hayden -Original Message- From: gamers-boun...@audyssey.org [mailto:gamers-boun...@audyssey.org] On Behalf Of dark Sent: Sunday, May 23, 2010 3:10 PM To: Gamers Discussion list Subject: Re: [Audyssey] Where have all the developers gone? There are two principle ones. Firstly, markit planets are ridiculous, sinse you can buy all six resources for them. This means they're three times more valuable than any other planet, thus having the full markit set gives any player a massive advantage. combined to this, is the fact that there is no limit on using teleport or space truck stations to grab planets, particularly the markit planet. The second reeally! obsurd loophole is the exchange coins option, which can effectively just double, or even triple your entire stack of money in one go. It doesn't matter what planets you own or don't own, or what resources you buy, getting lucky a couple of times on exchange coins and nobody will catch you up. I remember a game I was playing with Igor from vip gameszone and a couple of other people. We were all on betwene 2 and 6 thousand, while Igor was on 40 thousand after three circuites of the board, even though we'd been buying planets pretty evenly. The same goes for losing at any of the minigames, lose all your cash in hand and your pretty much out of the running, and as you can only morgage planets when you land on them, there's really no way to get back in unlike in monopoly. As I said, it's a major shame. Lords of the galaxy has some truly amazing soundscapes, and I absolutely love the different environments for each planet and minigame. The idea of sending essentially turn data to other players was a nice one as well. I just really! wich Vip gameszone would clean the game balance up a bit more. Beware the Grue! Back when I started looking into audio games in early 2006, it seemed there were 4 principle developers of big time serious games, and a number of people who either developed free, random symple stuff or promised and not delivered. Gma (my starting point sinse I began with Shades of doom), along with pcs who I believed at first were basically an extention of Gma (sorry Phil, this was in the days before sarah). Vip gameszone (who I bought my second game, galaxy ranger from), bsc, and Draconis. I freely admit I was wrong in seeing everyone else as pretty secondary to these four, sinse this was before Jim released some of his more extensive games like Win Golf or puppy1, and before I'd played anything Tom had released. Nevertheless, it does seem rather weerd now, because even though generally the hole state of audio games have improved, Entombed, time of conflict, sound rts, rail racer, sarah etc, etc, it seems mostly by new people like Che and jason alan. out of what I used to believe were the big four, only one, --- Gma, have consistantly developed stuff over the past five years. Though Draconis sold Sarah, they weren't actually responsable for building the game, and don't seem to have made major updates sinse 2007, the same can be said of Vip gameszone, who went quiet after the release of their sports package, quite a shame, as their Lords of the galaxy game rather impressed me, and with a litle rebalancing and illimination of loop holes could be fantastic. Then Bsc haven't made any releases in this time, though at least in their case I do know this is because Justin has a full time job and children, which is fair enough of course. It does seem a bit odd though that so many of who I believed originally to be the major players have gone somewhat silent. Does anyone know what's going on with the others, or whether there is any further news from justin? manifestly they're stil around having done vista updates and such, but it does seem somewhat strange that so many of who I believed were the big players are now rather silent, and I'd hate to think more developers have done a bavisoft.
