[Audyssey] Improving accessibility document
Hi all, Well, my last message still hasn't made it onto the list yet, but I've finished the rough draft of the document I was working on. I've placed it at this URL: www.inthecompanyofgrues.com/interactivefiction/ifvia.rtf It's a rich text format document and weighs in at roughly four thousand five hundred words. A lot of that is in the form of direct quotes. It's late here, almost 1am, so I have no doubt there might be a few errors in there, but I'd really appreciate some of you guys checking over it for me. If there is something that really needs to be ripped out or reworded, don't even hesitate to let me know. Equally, if you have a brainwave and would love to see something added, fill me in or drop me a line. To be clear, the document has not been made public other than on this list. When it is finished, it will be posted on my blog (Company of Grues), which will see it appear in the aggregation on the major interactive fiction site, Planet IF. As you will see, I've tried to incorporate learnings from my own mistakes into the information provided. Hopefully, that comes across okay. Finally, there are a couple of other people who have helped me that I will be emailing the document to. Their input and required changes will also shape the final document. Hi, Well, for what it is worth you certainly are on the right track. For example, the examine command could include so much more than a visual description. As you pointed out an author could include weight, texture, sound, smell, etc to give it more meaning to someone who is blind. For example, let's assume we want to examine a Christmas tree. examine tree Before you stands a 12 foot tall dark green Christmas tree decorated in red, blue, and yellow lights with silver, gold, and red balls. As you happily examine the Christmas tree you smell the wonderful sent of pine that reminds you of the forest near your home. As you lay a hand on the tree you feel the sharp prickle of pine needles against your skin. This is a simple example of how the examine command can be improved. It gives a visual description of the Christmas tree, but adds in some extra sensory descriptions like smell and the feel of the pine needles against your skin. We could, of course, go into even more detail, but this is probably enough to set the mood. It's quite interesting the way you talk about fitting into mainstream society. For me, it's exactly the same, trying to fit in here at Audyssey. So, thank you so much, I really do appreciate the clarification and education. Not to mention the cool ideas you guys come up with. It really does help. What's the plan? Well, to be honest, I'm not sure right now. Yes, I'm committed to creating a document that looks at practical ways interactive fiction can be made more accessible. When that's written I'll be letting some key people read it and respond, so that I don't make any big mistakes or phrase something poorly. In addition I'm currently learning to code in Inform 7. What I'd love to do is write an extension that defines a really easy way to make Choose Your Own Adventure style games in Inform 7, complete with a few options that I'm playing around with to reduce the babble. After that, I'm thinking of starting up a short form multiple choice story competition (with some reasonable cash prizes) to encourage people to get their creative juices flowing. It's particularly for those who aren't coding minded, but there will be an innovation prize. Well, I hope that clarifies a few things. Hi Nicol, What probably is the case is that your anti-virus software has blocked or removed the .exe from the .zip-file. You can read about this problem on the Extant-forum here: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?id=4310 Here's what others have posted about the problem: Dark: If you've tried downloading multiple times and got the same issue, perhaps you've got an antivirus program which is acting up and auto deleting the files for some reason, thus creating a zip folder with no contents (I have seen this happen before). Raygrote: Sounds like your antivirus is deleting it. Try either turnning it off temporarily, then install and add the .exe as an exception. If that doesn't work, try redownloading the zip file with a download manager such as free download manager. This will make sure everything gets downloaded. Most web browsers will not be able to help you out if the download unexpectedly stops. I've seen some websites that trip all of the web browsers I have, including Internet Explorer, Firefox, and Seamonkey. They would download to a certain point and then stop and say it was finished, leaving a corrupted file. This game sounds awesome, downloading it now. So maybe try adding an exception for Extant in your virus-software, or temporarily turning off your virus software. Extant does not need installing, simply unzipping. Let me know if you can get it to work! Raygrote: Sounds like your antivirus is deleting it. Try either turnning it off temporarily, then install and add the .exe as an exception. If that doesn't work, try redownloading the zip file with a download manager such as free download manager. This will make sure everything gets downloaded. Most web browsers will not be able to help you out if the download unexpectedly stops. I've seen some websites that trip all of the web browsers I have, including Internet Explorer, Firefox, and Seamonkey. They would download to a certain point and then stop and say it was finished, leaving a corrupted file. This game sounds awesome, downloading it now. So maybe try adding an exception for Extant in your virus-software, or temporarily turning off your virus software. Extant does not need installing, simply unzipping. But it must been having some work on my vista computer that fix the problem I was having to start up the game. I still need to reformat my main drive to get the service pack 2 on this machine. That will allow me to up date the IE and Jaws. Stuck on 7 for IE and jaws ten. That is a large project where I am backing up files when I have time. But its nice to finish up little things like TPA. If you don't consult the number one source of helpful information and instruction on game play that the game developer took the time and effort to produce and provide for you, then it's your own fault and nobody else's. That's what it's there for, isn't it? If you are one of those who just dives right in without first getting assistance that you might need in a very short time, and you get stuck, and you still don't check the user's guide, that's your own problem, and that's what you get for not looking before you leap. I wonder how many complaints there would be if a game were to come out that included no keystroke lists or no instructions of any kind? Maybe this should be done to show their importance? Hello, I have just submitted a order to BPCPrograms for 3DVelocity. Since this is supposed to be an automated system, I have expected to get an Email right away after I have sent the order. I have not gotten anything as of yet, I am going to wait for a bit, if not I will contact BPCPrograms. Has anyone had to wait for a while after getting the Pay pal receipt? Yeah, that's a fair point. But mainstream games don't give you much.. the user manual is a booklet with instructions on how to set the game up, and the very very basics. Doesn't cover anything too useful. lol. Whichever email you used for Pay Pal it will be sent. By the way, when I clicked the place Lick file here, the program said missing shortcut. Here is the source that it was supposed to go to. c:\ProgramData\BPCPrograms\TDV\lic.tdv. I looked in the program data folder but did not see a folder for BPCPrograms. Is there a reason as to why this might have happened? Ok, so I got my client ID within about half an hour or so. But when I enter it and click Download Lock, I get an error about an unhandled exception, something about could not find a part of the path. I'd copy and paste the actual message but it wouldn't let me. But when I click the Details button I do get pastable text which I'll include below. Hope I can figure this out since I really wanna play Mission Mode. Hi Brian, This is a problem I also experienced, but fortunately the solution is simple enough. Go to c:\documents and settings\all users\application data\ You'll need to create a folder named BPCPrograms and in that folder another named TDV. Once that's done the download should work properly. [Audyssey] Using a Little Initiative
Hi all, As this is increasingly becoming an issue on list I thought I would step in on the discussion as a moderator as well as a fellow list member. I think I need to spell out or clarify the point of this list. First, as the list description clearly states we are hear to discuss games that are accessible through accident or design. We provide help, hints, and offer open discussion on same. That does not mean, however, that we are to be a replacement for the game's documentation, the game's developer, or a replacement for the developer's technical support services. Although, list members may help with any or all of these issues we expect a little self-initiative from the person asking the question. For example, if you are going to ask a question like, how do I register game x, you should at least consult the game's user documentation or check the developer's website for that information before asking the question on list. Asking such a question that has already been answered elsewhere is both a waist of our time and probably yours as well. Instead of waiting several minutes or maybe hours for someone to respond you could probably have had the answer sooner just by using a little self-initiative and looked up that information in the game's documentation or on the developer's website. Why should the list be expected to answer those kinds of questions when you already have that information at hand and available elsewhere? Another thing that gets some people annoyed is when a game is talked about on list for days, and then someone asks, where do I get the game from? Ummm...Seriously have you been paying attention? If you haven't the Audyssey list is archived, there is Google, etc. Plenty of resources to get the same information without asking the question and having people repeat a download address multiple times in one week just because someone can't or won't look it up in the internet resources available to him/her. I have to ask, can you do anything for yourself, or do you have to be spoon fed everything? To be blunt about it by not taking a little personal initiative, not trying to look up the answers yourself first, is just going to make some users of the list upset at you. Many of them, including myself, will see you as lazy and will not want to read or respond to your posts. Personally speaking, I feel there is no excuse for not reading a manual in full before coming on a list like this asking questions like what command does this or that or how do I register the game when the answer is right there in the manual. I am not only less likely to respond to that kind of question, but I often add that person to a mail filter to automatically be deleted from my inbox by default. Keep that in mind before you ask several questions like that as I'm sure I'm not alone in filtering my mail. Bottom line, I'm willing to help anyone with an honest question if I'm certain the person has tried to find an answer and couldn't find it. For example, finding a secret item in a game isn't likely to be in the manual, and if they really can't find it I'll give them a spoiler to help them locate it. If the person has a technical problem with a game that is not covered by the manual by all means I will help in anyway I can. However, I'm not going to spend my time answering several questions that I know can be easily answered by reading the documentation. I can usually tell who has or has not read the manual for game x.So if I choose to respond to a person asking a question I feel has not tried to look up the information elsewhere I refer them to the manual where they should have started to begin with. I know some members get a bit upset when that happens, but seriously read the manual first. If you don't know where to download a game use something like Google. After all, that's what it is there for so use it. It saves everyone unnecessary time spent doing your own research for you. Hi Wiliam, Remember what I said earlier? Simply create the folder (not the file!) where you will place your lock file, and then enter your client ID, click download Lock file and bam ! you're done. Or at least, you should be...lol. I just finished my second race, quite a game, and I must say you have to be careful with your fuel. Hi Brian, No, not inside the game folder. If you're using XP, the folder path you need is: C:\DocumentsAndSettings\AllUsers\AplicationDData\BPCPrograms\TDV. Once the system finds that path, you're good to go. Sure that involves answering questions, but questions shouldn't extend to ones that can be answered somewhere else... If you haven't the Audyssey list is archived, there is Google, etc. Plenty of resources to get the same information without asking the question and having people repeat a download address multiple times in one week just because someone can't or won't look it up in the internet resources available to him/her. I have to ask, can you do anything for yourself, or do you have to be spoon fed everything? To be blunt about it by not taking a little personal initiative, not trying to look up the answers yourself first, is just going to make some users of the list upset at you. Many of them, including myself, will see you as lazy and will not want to read or respond to your posts. Personally speaking, I feel there is no excuse for not reading a manual in full before coming on a list like this asking questions like what command does this or that or how do I register the game when the answer is right there in the manual. I am not only less likely to respond to that kind of question, but I often add that person to a mail filter to automatically be deleted from my inbox by default. Keep that in mind before you ask several questions like that as I'm sure I'm not alone in filtering my mail. Bottom line, I'm willing to help anyone with an honest question if I'm certain the person has tried to find an answer and couldn't find it. For example, finding a secret item in a game isn't likely to be in the manual, and if they really can't find it I'll give them a spoiler to help them locate it. If the person has a technical problem with a game that is not covered by the manual by all means I will help in anyway I can. However, I'm not going to spend my time answering several questions that I know can be easily answered by reading the documentation. I can usually tell who has or has not read the manual for game x.So if I choose to respond to a person asking a question I feel has not tried to look up the information elsewhere I refer them to the manual where they should have started to begin with. I know some members get a bit upset when that happens, but seriously read the manual first. If you don't know where to download a game use something like Google. After all, that's what it is there for so use it. It saves everyone unnecessary time spent doing your own research for you. Hello, To put the file necessary to register the game, under the start menu there will be a folder called “place Lock file here.” Right click and hit properties. look for the target and follow that address on your computer. For example: on Windows Vista or 7, it wil be “c:\programData\BpcPrograms\TDV” Since the folder was not created, you can create the folders in the program data folder. Also, if you look under your app data in your windows vista or 7 computer, in the roaming folder there will be a “BPCPrograms” folder. “C:\users\username\appData\roaming\BPCPrograms\TDV” For windows XP: CSmile with tongue outdocuments and settings\username\application data\bpcprograms\tdv” You can create the folders in the application data. Hi, An easy way to get to your Application Data folder is to go to the run dialogue and type: %appdata% That's part of the path. In that app data folder, create a folder called BPCPrograms And then a TDV folder. Put your Lic.tdv file in there and hopefully it'll work. I would think this to be a fault of the game developers. Anyway, most of the games for blind gamers aren't that way, at least the ones I play.
