Odd. Because I used to be able to get playlists like that... guess
they changed it. Dammit.

I have not tried with the latest version.
I keep it updated but I don't usually download that much.

Re: [Audyssey] mvc 3 arcade mode playthrough

2011-02-22 Thread Clement Chou
I agree whole-heartedly. But so far, it's way too early to tell...
however, it's looking promising, and if it turns out to be worth my
preorder, I am going to be playing for a long time to come. A lot of
people think MK Deception was a good game... personally I didn't like
it. I went back to playing it a few times after having played SF and
tekken for so long... and couldn't pull off a single combo. Not that
I didn't remember the combinations... I just couldn't press the
buttons slow enough. Even the link combos in SF are pretty fast and
require strict timing. Seemed MK deception required you to be as
unfluid with your presses as possible. And puzzle kombat? The most
obvious ripoff of Super Puzzle Fighter 2 turbo, for anyone who knows
what that game is. As one of my friends said, capcom should sew them.
lol. And I personally, I'm not inclined to disagree. But let's see
what MK 9 brings to the table... and I agree again. I'd rather be a
bad MK player than someone who can completely dominate because of the
mess the controls and fighting system in general has become.

Re: [Audyssey] mvc 3 arcade mode playthrough

2011-02-22 Thread Scott Chesworth
Hmmm, agreed about MK's gameplay not being as deep nowadays. It's
gradually been happening since MK4 onward, I find each title to be
that little bit more watered down. It might only be me clinging to the
characters I know, but I keep finding myself saying little prayers
that MK9 can combine the insanely good sound design of the last few
titles with a sharp increase in the depth of control available for
each character. I want to be able to feel like there's more work to do
to master a character than just learning specials and fatalities. I
want to be a totally horrible MK player again because I'm so out of
practice, rather than being able to plough my way through with a moves
list and some half-hearted button mashing. From everything I've seen
online so far, MK9 is holding its own sound-wise, so now we've just
got to hope they haven't been lazy about the actual number crunching
and mechanics of reverting to 2d movement. If 2d movement turns out to
be just a gimick, the series is going to feel s tired IMO.

2011-02-22 Thread michael barnes
Hey, a few weeks ago someone here on the list had talk about two games
for the iphone so I was wondering when they will be out. The first one
was call two birds if I not mistaken.
And the other one is going to be like aurifi except it is going to be
about a super hero.

Hello Everyone,
Over the past couple of weeks the BPC mailing list has been down because of a
server switch. This message is to inform you that now instead of a mailing

of the mailing list. You will have to become a member on your own in this
forum, there will be NO mass subscription based on the members of the

Also, registrations for both Three-D Velocity and Treasure Hunt have been
enabled again; they were disabled for a short time to prevent any potential
data loss while the switch was in progress and tests were being run on the new

You missed latin, ancient norman, cornish, welsh, galic and probably a
hole load of others ;d.

english is sort of the biggest linguistic thief in the world!

I never could get french, because I started off doing spanish in school
and spanish has to be the easiest language spelling wise ever!

Every letter in every word is spoken aloud accept for the letter h at
the beginning of some words for instance habitacion, ie room, who's
phonically correct sound would be something like hab bit tath thee on,
with the spanish th sound on the c and a long oo at the end.

After that French was a nightmare.

interestingly enough, I'm now looking at learning at least enough
Italian so that I can sing in the language convincingly, especially
considdering that my singing teacher sets me to do some pretty
intensive Italian voice exercises, and once again, it seems to be as
ponetic as Spanish (though i admit I haven't looked at that much yet).

Beware the grue!

Dark.

Hi Jacob,
I think your DOS version is incomplete. If I'm remember correctly there's
supposed to be a hobbit.dat file also. hobbit.com is just the loader for
the game. It's a very tiny file which purpose it is to laod the rest of
the program.

As I recall it, the Hobbit from 1982 was written by Melbourn.

The zcode adaptation is a completely different game than the original
1982 version, it would seem.

There was a DOS version of the 1982 Melbourn. It's probably available
from some abandonware site. I have it somewhere on a burnt CD. I could
try and find it.

I was wondering if anybody knew how I could get my hands on the old

how

Hi,

Well my spelling sucks as well.

At school, or at homework, I always use a spell checker. My teachers say
don't use a spell checker, but I have to say I disagree. The only way
you'll learn most words. Yes, reading is the key, but how are you going
to correct your spelling without you knowing? You do not just correct it
like that, you learn the spelling.

Anyways, Hayden says my spelling is improving, isn't it?

Hi Darren,

Well, admitedly mine isn't the best either. I often make typos, come
back
and proofread what I wrote and kick myself for making such a mistake.
For
example, the other day I wrote faucet like fosset, and later when I saw
my

own e-mail I realised I sent it out spelled wrong.
I knew faucet is spelled f a u c e t, but for some reason when typing in
a
hurry I forgot and spelled it f o s s e t. I looked at that and whent
what

the heck?

Actually, part of the problem isn't that I can't spell it is I just
don't

slow down long to think of the correct spelling. When typing at 50 or 60
words a minute it is easy to forget how something is spelled and just
type

something that sounds right at the time. Its only when spell checking it
word by word I realise I unconsciously typed something else.

Cheers!

When I did French in high school, the best I ever got was that could read
Asterix books in original french, but, another joke is while can still
vaguely read some types of french (day to day language), when I hear it
spoken by a real french person, it doesn't generally make much sense to

Italian so that I can sing in the language convincingly, especially
considdering that my singing teacher sets me to do some pretty intensive
Italian voice exercises, and once again, it seems to be as ponetic as
Spanish (though i admit I haven't looked at that much yet).

Hi Jacob,
I think your DOS version is incomplete.

I could

[My Reply:]
Hi,

Not sure where to get it, but if it's back in 1982, it's likely
on cassette or cartridge. Don't quote me, but I don't think the 1541,
very slow, 5.25 inch floppy drive came out until 84. Linux has a C64
emulator it would probably play on as well as a buttload of other
emulators from the Apple II to the Playstation. I haven't tried any of
them, as I don't have any software, but it might be as simple as having
the appropriate disk drive hooked up to your computer.

I however wasn't as good with unlabled images back then so gave up with

i tried it again in around 2006, but oncemore gave up due to too much

At school, or at homework, I always use a spell checker. My teachers say
don't use a spell checker, but I have to say I disagree. The only way
you'll learn most words. Yes, reading is the key, but how are you going to
correct your spelling without you knowing? You do not just correct it like
that, you learn the spelling.

Hi Darren,

Well, admitedly mine isn't the best either. I often make typos, come back
and proofread what I wrote and kick myself for making such a mistake. For
example, the other day I wrote faucet like fosset, and later when I saw

I knew faucet is spelled f a u c e t, but for some reason when typing in

what

the heck?

Actually, part of the problem isn't that I can't spell it is I just don't

Re: [Audyssey] Anyone playing kingdom of loathing?

2011-02-22 Thread dark

so it's you Yohandi!

I was wondering who the heck this musicman person was from the list ;d.

Most mysterious.

The only really sad thing is i first came upon the game in 2004. the
interface didn't work so well with hal, but I did for instance play the
original tut oriol quest which was much less informative (it basically said
go away and fight stuff at cobs nob and the haunted pantry).

I however wasn't as good with unlabled images back then so gave up with the
game.

i tried it again in around 2006, but oncemore gave up due to too much
getting beaten up. this account I'm playing now was actually created in
2008, but it hasn't been used much at all unfortunately.

I now wish I'd perciveered a bit more earlier, sinse the game is far more
interesting than I initially thought, but so it goes.

Beware the grue!

Hi Jacob,
I think your DOS version is incomplete.

I could

I'm afraid you must have got a line crossed somewhere reguarding infocom
and zcode.

The z code format was indeed originaly developed by infocom to run their
games like zork and hichhikers' guide, actually made to run games
on multiple platforms with a virual z machine, but infocom have been out
of business now for around 20 years, and the z code format is pretty
much public domain.

the vast majority, hundreds in all, of z code games have nothing to
do with infocom at all anymore, though it is stil possible to run games
like zork quite well on any modern machine that can read zcode games.

Thus, when myself and others mentioned not hereing of an infocom version
of the hobbit, we meant a version of the hobbit published by the
original infocom company back in the 80's, rather than just a hobbit
game run in zcode.

Whether the game you have is a zcode port of the original, or another
game based on the hobbit written by someone else in zcode, I'm not sure.

Hope this clears the confusion up slightly.

I was wondering if anybody knew how I could get my hands on the old

 Hello,

After some discussions about various interfaces which I was recently
involved in, I would be keen on both first letter menu activation, and a
generic key which would bring up all of the possible commands; like the
 alt key in windows.

As I have an iPhone, I would love to see more text adventure games in
that format. Note that many of the current text adventure games which I
have on my iPhone give a list of choices which you double or split tap
to select your choice and then you tap the proceed button.

Hi all,

I was wondering if anybody knew how I could get my hands on the old
1982 text adventure of The Hobbit? It ran on the C64 on a cassette
tape or floppy disk (not sure if that was a 5 In. or a 3.5 In.), but
if anyone knows where I could get this, it would be awesome! Also,
how

the heck would I make it run? Lol.

Thanks in advance,

Actually, for quite a long while I did! think it was eye pod, just because
I'd only ever read it with hal and not seen it spelt.

A shame really, I rather like eye pod, sounds sort of alien (in the ridly

Hi Dark,

Ahem, I do understand, but that's not even close to how faucet is
spelled. It is f a u c e t. There isn't even an r in the word so I'm
not sure where you are getting the for sound when it is foss not for.
Is this an accent thing that confuses you?

The reason I ask is because down south, where a lot of my relatives
live, every one says stuff like I'm going to warsh the dishes, warsh
my clothes, etc and I constantly ask them where they are geting the r
from. It is spelled w a s h which is wash. Yet they will sware up and
down it is not spoken like wash but warsh making them sound
uneducated. The funny thing is some of them are college educated, know
better, and continue to use the slang. So I was just wondering if this
is a local thing where you guys say forset instead of faucet, or an
unintentional misspelling error.

Hi Jacob

I'm afraid you must have got a line crossed somewhere reguarding infocom
and zcode.

The z code format was indeed originaly developed by infocom to run their
games like zork and hichhikers' guide, actually made to run games on
multiple platforms with a virual z machine, but infocom have been out of
business now for around 20 years, and the z code format is pretty much
public domain.

the vast majority, hundreds in all, of z code games have nothing to
do with infocom at all anymore, though it is stil possible to run games
like zork quite well on any modern machine that can read zcode games.

Thus, when myself and others mentioned not hereing of an infocom version
of the hobbit, we meant a version of the hobbit published by the original
infocom company back in the 80's, rather than just a hobbit game run in
zcode.

Whether the game you have is a zcode port of the original, or another game
based on the hobbit written by someone else in zcode, I'm not sure.

Hope this clears the confusion up slightly.

english is sort of the biggest linguistic thief in the world!

I never could get french, because I started off doing spanish in school
and spanish has to be the easiest language spelling wise ever!

Every letter in every word is spoken aloud accept for the letter h at the
beginning of some words for instance habitacion, ie room, who's
phonically correct sound would be something like hab bit tath thee on,
with the spanish th sound on the c and a long oo at the end.

After that French was a nightmare.

interestingly enough, I'm now looking at learning at least enough Italian
so that I can sing in the language convincingly, especially considdering
that my singing teacher sets me to do some pretty intensive Italian voice
exercises, and once again, it seems to be as ponetic as Spanish (though i
admit I haven't looked at that much yet).

As I recall it, the Hobbit from 1982 was written by Melbourn.

The zcode adaptation is a completely different game than the original 1982
version, it would seem.

There was a DOS version of the 1982 Melbourn. It's probably available from
some abandonware site. I have it somewhere on a burnt CD. I could try and
find it.

Also, how
the heck would I make it run? Lol.

Thanks in advance,

Hahaha! That sounds about right. Strangely though I think some girls
sound cute with a bit of a New York accent for some reason. Then
again, I love girls with accents. English, Australian, Southern, they
all sound interesting to me provided the girl in question has a sexy
voice to go with the accent.

Yet, they will also tell you about changing the Earle in their cah, when

Don't talk about my old primary school teacher. Oh gosh, I never ever

Hi Dark,

Best guess is because of the origens of the language. English started
out as a Germanic language when England was concored by germanic
tribes, and over the centuries English speaking people adopted or
borrowed from several other languages. We get words like mirage,
ambience, bureau, plateau, shateau, and crayon from French. We get
most of our scientific terms like psychology, biology, chemestry, and
so on from Greek. Here in the U.S. there are lots of places and things
named after Native American people, places, and things. The end result
of all this mixing of languages is that even when we set rules for
phonix and spelling they don't apply to every word in the English
language as a hole.

For example, in high school I took French. The phonix rules are very
very specific. Most of the time if you hear the o sound at the end of
a word like plateau, shateau, bureau, etc you should automatically
think e a u. If you hear an a sound at the end of a name/word it often
times is an accented ay followed by a e like in Renee. If I hear, voo,
I know it is spelled v o u s because the o u s sound makes that oo
sound. I found the language quite enjoyable because the spelling was
pretty much the way it sounded based on the phonix rules for the
language. I actually got higher grades in French class than I did in
English class. Now, I only half remember the language. Lol!

You missed latin, ancient norman, cornish, welsh, galic and probably a
hole load of others ;d.

english is sort of the biggest linguistic thief in the world!

I never could get french, because I started off doing spanish in school
and spanish has to be the easiest language spelling wise ever!

Every letter in every word is spoken aloud accept for the letter h at the
beginning of some words for instance habitacion, ie room, who's phonically
correct sound would be something like hab bit tath thee on, with the
spanish th sound on the c and a long oo at the end.

Re: [Audyssey] Creating Adventure Games

2011-02-22 Thread Shiny protector

Hi,

Well my spelling sucks as well.

At school, or at homework, I always use a spell checker. My teachers say
don't use a spell checker, but I have to say I disagree. The only way you'll
learn most words. Yes, reading is the key, but how are you going to correct
your spelling without you knowing? You do not just correct it like that, you
learn the spelling.

Anyways, Hayden says my spelling is improving, isn't it?

Hi Darren,

Well, admitedly mine isn't the best either. I often make typos, come back
and proofread what I wrote and kick myself for making such a mistake. For
example, the other day I wrote faucet like fosset, and later when I saw
my

own e-mail I realised I sent it out spelled wrong.
I knew faucet is spelled f a u c e t, but for some reason when typing in a
hurry I forgot and spelled it f o s s e t. I looked at that and whent what
the heck?

Actually, part of the problem isn't that I can't spell it is I just don't
slow down long to think of the correct spelling. When typing at 50 or 60
words a minute it is easy to forget how something is spelled and just type
something that sounds right at the time. Its only when spell checking it
word by word I realise I unconsciously typed something else.

Cheers!

Re: [Audyssey] Old 1982 text adventure of The Hobbit for DOS

2011-02-22 Thread Tobias Vinteus

As I recall it, the Hobbit from 1982 was written by Melbourn.

The zcode adaptation is a completely different game than the original
1982 version, it would seem.

There was a DOS version of the 1982 Melbourn. It's probably
available from some abandonware
site. I have it somewhere on a burnt CD. I could try and find it.

Hi Mich,

Unfortunately, that's usually not the case. Just because a word sounds
right doesn't mean it is correct. The English language is filled with
words that change spelling based on context and meaning.

For example, none, as in nothing, and nun, a Cathlic woman who has
devoted her life to God. There is hear, as in you listen to something,
and here, as in a place. There is sight, as in vision, and site, as in
you quote something from a source. There is seen, as in you saw
something, and scene, as in a part of a play or movie. There are
litterally hundreds of cases like this where the word might be
technically spelled correct, sound right, but used in the incorrect
context. thus being a spelling error.

For instance, last summer my wife and I were out looking at yard
sales. There were yard sale signs everywhere, and I remember at the
end of this one road someone posted a large yard sale sign letting us
know where the house was. Nothing unusual about that. What was wrong
with the sign in huge letters they spelled the word sail, s a i l, as
in the sail of a ship rather than s a l e, which is you are selling
something. When a person who knows better sees something like that it
just makes the person who wrote it that way look uneducated. Although,
it is an easy mistake to make given that the words sound exactly the
same, but are spelled totally different based on context.

Anyway, to get things back on topic this kind of confusion makes it
hard to play interactive fiction games because if you are playing a
game about a ship and spell sail, s a l e, instead of s a i l you are
going to get an error, and you might not know why. This is a case
where close doesn't cut it. Either you know or don't know the proper
spellings for things in games like that. Fortunately, with winfrotz,
adrift, etc you can look at the screen to find the proper spelling for
things if you get mixed up as to which spelling is correct. As Romona
put it "which witch is which?"

You missed latin, ancient norman, cornish, welsh, galic and probably a hole
load of others ;d.

english is sort of the biggest linguistic thief in the world!

I never could get french, because I started off doing spanish in school and
spanish has to be the easiest language spelling wise ever!

Every letter in every word is spoken aloud accept for the letter h at the
beginning of some words for instance habitacion, ie room, who's phonically
correct sound would be something like hab bit tath thee on, with the spanish
th sound on the c and a long oo at the end.

After that French was a nightmare.

interestingly enough, I'm now looking at learning at least enough Italian so
that I can sing in the language convincingly, especially considdering that
my singing teacher sets me to do some pretty intensive Italian voice
exercises, and once again, it seems to be as ponetic as Spanish (though i
admit I haven't looked at that much yet).

Re: [Audyssey] Creating Adventure Games

2011-02-22 Thread Thomas Ward

Lol!
