well. This will be the last time i ever upgrade jaws. 64 bit is the way foreward and was the reason why I upgraded hal in the first place. I have jaws 6.2 as part of my work, but unless the agency and business forces me into an upgrade I won't be upgrading ever again or at least till this is fixed. Re: [Audyssey] games we'd like to play: toilet madness
that actually sounds good. on the subject of the games of this type check out www.shengames.com there is a thread on the forum about it. its all flash though but the downloadable burger quest is playable. the flash onlines are if you can actually get into the games. some links have no labels right now. At 11:05 p.m. 8/03/2011, you wrote: Plot and objective: The game character is a wealthy citizen residing in Maryland, USA. He loves to go out, especially to pubs. He especially loves his beer. One night things just went out of control. Some suggest a person must separate drinks with a lot of water. Well, that's exactly what this guy did. He had 3 500 ml draft beers separated with huge glasses of water. You can just guess what happens next. You're right, this guy needs the toilet urgently! So he goes to the toilet of the pub. He sits on it, ready to wee. But before he could wee, the toilet teleports him to a forest. There our game character is attacked by many little elves, they shoot paint balls at him. Each time you are hit by a paint ball, you lose 5 percent health. Your character will start breathing once your health gets low. Locate honey combs in the forest and eat the honey to raise your health. Your objective here is to run to where an elve is before he can shoot a paint ball at you by using 3d game movement similar to shades of doom. Once you are 1 feet away from him, your character will wee on his feet, causing ugly warts there. The elve sees the warts and scream and run away, warning his mates to run away. Your character sees a longdrop in the distance. Long drops are used in olden days before people invented toilets. Your character notices that this particular long drop has a metal border around it .Your character just thinks that this border is just there to make it fancy .So your character sitss on the longdrop, ready to wee and there he gets teleported again, this time you find yourself in a long underground passage in the process of caving in. Run with 3d game movement under the falling debree through this passage, occasionally ducking with control down arrow to miss big stones falling. At the end of the passage is a door leading to a toilet. You enter the door and sit on the toilet and finish weeing. Just after you finished weeing, just before you intend to look around to see where the lever is to flush the toilet, the toilet teleports you to a lawn patch. Your character will say: ah, what a relief! My bladder is at last empty! This is the final level. Here you must see how many monkeys you can catch with your net and how many coins you can locate and pick up in the set time for bonus points by using 3d game movement and spacebar to catch a monkey. --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. Any games without action of any sort violent or otherwise need to have some interest. puzzles, etc. In the ones like the hospital, standard tests wouldn't scare me. Maybe something like they were going to do bad things to you. or something. I have no idea. Sure no violence in the games but these types are only of 3 types. 1 puzzle. 2 card casino or board. 3. everything else. Its a shame that paperboy was never completed but there it is I guess. on one of the bgt forums there was a game where you practiced driving a car around for no reason. totally lame and bad. A lot of blind games have stratogy, action, puzzles and other things. Unless they are short arcade games. You really can't make good games without all these elements including violence to some extent and randomness especially. I am just worried that in the quest to avoid violent games and games that are away from what people have been playing we will have loads of short games with small plots that won't have any substance to them. I guess you could base a game on one element like towers of war which is stratogy really and only that. Or laser attack but thats hard to base the game on one element. I am just a player and I like games like gtc shades of doom, etc because you don't know always waht is comming. Yes some stuf is static but you can be going along and then a monster comes you have to kill. It may be right in your way, or hard to get to or whatever. Saying that if people can make these types of games and make them interesting I have no problem playing them. Its just that any big project needs to have loads of things to have replay value. Last crusade was a simple rpg with random generator. I don't play it that much but still do. At 04:34 a.m. 8/03/2011, you wrote: come on. aah thanks for clarifying that. At 01:09 a.m. 9/03/2011, you wrote: Hi Shaun, The issue with SFML crashing on exit had nothing to do with OpenAL though. That is a bug in sfml-window.dll, and for reasons no one has figured out it conflicts with some Windows XP vidio drivers. However, it works perfectly fine on the same system using Linux, and Mac OS users haven't seen this bug either. As for the 3d panning I explained that in a prior e-mail as well. Basically, I was using sfml-audio.dll which was a middleware wrapper for OpenAL. Unfortunately, sfml-audio, while decent for most uses, doesn't completely expose the OpenAL API so someone can't just add a pan control using SFML. However, if youwrite your own pan control for OpenAL directly then I'm pretty sure it wouldn't be too bad. Well I think we may have to install mono for windows but not sure. if the ms dotnet stuff will run mono thats fine. Level Star's Icon and APH BraillePlus may NOT be supported, however since the announcement of Orion SmartBook, the Android-based notetaker, and Braille Wizard should run fine once Mono for Android is out of its pre-release phase. I use Hekkus sound library, which is a cross-platform engine with fast sound anipulation, but it doesn't yet support 3D but the developers are working on that. Re: [Audyssey] Going Mono!
Hi Shaun and all, If you have the Microsoft .NET Framework installed and up to date it can easily run applications written with Monodevelop. Mono is nothing more and nothing less than an open source implamentation of C# .NET and the .Net Framework for Mac and Linux developed by mono-project.org. Obviously, if you already have the original .Net Framework for Windows, which comes by default with Vista and Windows 7, there is no need for the open source .Net Framework too. Cheers! Re: [Audyssey] Seamlessly upgrading DirectX
Hi Philip, Philip wrote: In my upcoming game, for instance, there is a patch of quicksand that you cannot jump across. You can attempt to run over it, but there is a very high risk that you will get stuck and die. Right next to it is a swinging vine that you have to catch but that alone doesn't cary you over the quicksand either, even if you jump to the right when the vine is swinging as far to the right as it can go. Instead you need to climb up the vine, above which is a branch that you can climb on and then catch another vine which is just to the right of the quicksand to climb down again. That, to me, is a perfectly logical puzzle and my game will be full of those. My reply: Well, that sounds pretty fair to me. It is certainly better than the usual traps like simply jumping over a trap. This requires a little logic to solve which I'm certainly eager to see. So I'm certainly eager to try your new game once it is ready to test/play. Philip wrote: Again, personal preference must be the final judge as you say. And I think that it is a good thing that we have vastly different approaches, as we will end up making two vastly different sidescrollers. My reply: Agreed. If nothing else I think we both have learned that different opinions about things like this is good for everyone. That means even though we both might be producing side-scrollers the way we approach different things like traps means we will produce two completely unique products. That's exactly what the VI gaming community needs. For far too long it seamed like every other game release was another Space Invaders clone/knock-off and I really got burned out on playing them. So I am glad that we are at least beginning to open up the side-scroller/platformer style of games for the VI community which up until now has been pretty much limited to Super Liam, Tarzan Junior, Hunter, etc. Now, though, as we have discussed we really can explore it to its fullest, and see where it leads. Re: [Audyssey] They Stole My Name!
Hi Hayden, Well, it is possible they purchased a block of domains not intending to use them. The purpose would be to make sure that no one comes up with an internet domain name that might be confused with their own domain name. for example, my web site is http://www.usagamesinteractive.com but in theory I could purchase usagamesinteractive.net, usagamesinteractive.us, usagamesinteractive.biz, and so on. Plus I could branch out and buy up alternative names like usagamesentertainment.com, usagamesentertainment.net, usagamesentertainment.us, etc. Even though I might not intend to use the USA Games Entertainment websites I would have a monopoly on the USA Games domain names by simply buying up a huge block of them at once. Re: [Audyssey] Going Mono!
Hi Bryan, You'll find that C# .NET, called C-Sharp, is very very easy to learn. C# .NET is essentially a simplified version of C/C++ that is closer to Java than C++ in design. While it retains the C-Style syntax etc that's where the similarities end. One reason C# is so easy to learn and use is because the .Net runtimes like .Net Framework and Mono have hundreds of base classes that wrap all the low-level APIs for the operating system. For example, on windows if you want to create a Window using the Win32 API you can include System.Windows.Forms.dll into your project and have full access to the GUI through one quick and easy class library. On Linux if you want access to the Gnome GTK+ API install the GTK+ .Net libraries and use System.Windows.Forms.dll to create native Linux GUI applications. It really simplifies things like GUI programming, and brings it down to a beginner level. Another huge advantage of C# .Net over languages like true C/C++ is string handling. In C/C++ depending on the type of string you need such as an ansci or unicode string you will have to use different character string types which gets royally confusing for a beginner. in C# .Net that's not a problem at all. The Main .Net library, System.dll, has a class called String. As the name implies its intire job is to store strings of various types, will convert them from ansci to unicode behind the scenes, and you have various class methods to do complex tasks like get the length of the string, to cast a string to an integer, ffind out the characters at the beginning or end of a string, etc. The Mono/.Net Framework String classes simplifies handling strings in so many ways I can't list them all here. Anyway, as for accessing Sapi that is no problem. Sapi is a Windows com component which means the dll file can be imported and used by any programming language that supports Windows com. Microsoft's .Net Framework supports com so it is no big deal. Just include it in your C# .Net project and then initialize it like any other class object. HTH On 3/11/11, Bryan Mckinnish bryan...@gmail.com wrote: Hi. I thought about trying this, but I have a couple questions. How hard would it be to learn? Can it use sapi, and what sould library would be easy to learn with it? I've been wanting to try another language for a while, and I thought I'd start with something. Thanks.
