Re: [Audyssey] Facing the empire.

2011-12-27 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Lisa,

No, I don't remember the game, but it sounds cool. If it is a Dos
text adventure I'd imagine it would be pretty easy to port to Windows
or at least build a 32-bit or 64-bit Dos version for modern Windows
releases.

Cheers!

Re: [Audyssey] BGT competition - any interest?

2011-12-27 Thread Jeremy Kaldobsky
I love this idea! I'm too busy with current projects to participate in the
competition, but I really hope that others will sign up. It would be very cool
to see the resulting games, so I encourage everyone to take Philip up on this.

 Hi all,

I wanted to see whether there is an interest among the
existing or potentially interested users of the BGT engine,
in a competition that I am thinking of arranging. It would
go under thane name The BGT Month Marathon, and the
objective would be to create an audio game within one month.
The public would then vote on a few aspects of each game
such as sound quality, stability, playability, innovation,
etc. All of these scores would be added up to form the final
score for each game, and the one with the highest over-all
score would win. The contestants would of course be able to
vote as well, on anything other than their own creation. The
prise would be a free license of BGT Pro Unlimited.

So why am I holding this competition, and giving away a
prise worth 400 dollars? For one simple reason. I want to
encourage the use of the BGT engine to create new and
exciting games. If we can bring some fun into the creation
process as well, then all the better!

Now, I wanted to see what you all think of this idea? I
have not planned out all of the details yet, nor am I 100 %
certain that I will go ahead with the competition. However,
if the interest is great enough, then I'll definitely run
with it. If you are interested, please also specify whether
you would participate if we went ahead. If I get 4 or more
interested participants, then I will be certain to get
 rolling as early as January.

Thanks for reading and let me know your thoughts!

 Kind regards,

 Philip Bennefall

2011-12-27 Thread Charles Rivard
I don't think that release dates should be given, although if an expected,
and that is the key word here, dates of release are given, we should be told
why they are not met. If you can't keep a promise, you either shouldn't
have made it or you should explain why you can't keep it.

hi all

do people thinnk, as i do, that as a blind gaming community we need to not
be given release dates?

take this new title, kurt wolf, from the same developer as aerik.

quote
game is out new years eve quote
we heard this about other titles in our community and when deadlines could
not be adhered too, it was as though Armageddon ad come to earth.

then
quote demo uploading today quote
if someone knows this will not be the case, or the goal can evidently not
be met, why not provide an update, as for example, does howard sherman of

www.malinche.net
explaining why the deadline can not be met, or, not give a date at all?

I think as blind gamers we need to accept inevitable delays, and when a
game is out just announce it, provide links to demo and payment is any and
go.

[Audyssey] Fw: Eamon Deluxe Update-12-27-2011

2011-12-27 Thread dark
Hi.

I recieved this from the Eamon delux announce mailing list, and to forstall
questions, see http://audiogames.net/db.php?id=Eamon+delux

I'm not however sure whether or not this is goodnews, sinse with what the
developer says about Doxbox, I'm not sure if this also means the new version of
Eamon delux will be as inaccessible as the Apple Ii emulation that most people
use to play eamon. I don't however want to mail the developer and tell him
false information, because I'm not absolutely certain as to the ins and outs of
why a screen reader will! work with a dos application in xp, but not with
dosbox.

I really hope this is a step forward in tersm of access to eamon but I'm not
absolutely sure, and perhaps Tom or someone with more technical knolidge than
me could contact the Eamon delux developer and ask the right questions.

EAMON DELUXE STATUS UPDATE 26 DEC 2011

First off,

I apologize for the long delay in Eamon Deluxe activity. Real life took over
and I had to shelve the project for the past 5 years or so. Also, due to a
password change error, I was locked out of the Eamon Deluxe email account for
several years as well. I have taken steps to ensure the email problem won't
happen again and I am always happy to hear feedback about Eamon Deluxe, answer
any questions and help as best as I can with any technical issues.

I am pleased to announce that I have been working on an updated version of
Eamon Deluxe that is about 80% completed right now. I expect to release it for
download sometime in January of 2012.

Included updates so far:

* Initial installation presets to best screen mode, ignoring obsolete graphics
modes. (Can still be changed via control panel for your amusement)

* Will be fully compatible with ALL versions of Windows and hopefully Mac.
(Thanks to the makers of the wonderful DOSBox emulator!)

* (Hopefully) all bad email and contact info has been updated or removed from
programs to avoid confusion.

* ALL Eamon Deluxe sets will be included and listed in the proper adventure
number order. This includes partially finished sets and mini adventure
placeholders for the completely unfinished ones.

* Restored fancy hi-res intro to The Magic Kingdom.

* Various random bug fixes and some minor tweaks.

* Adventure list updated: Added newest Eamons, some missing author info and
The Training Ground was moved from Classics Vol 4 to Beginner's Adventures
where it belongs.

* All the previously converted but unreleased Eamon Adventure conversions I had
in my work directory will be included (almost 20 adventures!) Below is the list
of those adventures:

[Drum roll please...]

Beginner's Adventures:
  Eamon 195 The Training Ground

Re: [Audyssey] swamp-the pistol mouse---I got me a gun, no body move!

2011-12-27 Thread Jeremy Kaldobsky
Johnny, this is totally amazing! Haha! I'm sure the wait was harder on your
than anyone, but after you said you had ordered this thing I've also been
looking forward to when it would show up at your door. I've been anxious to
hear how it changed the game's experience.

I can see how the axe might be a little weird as you pull a trigger, but I
would guess that most of your time is spent with a firearm anyway. Very cool
indeed!

Well, after the agonizing 2 weeks
shipping, my pistol mouse got here today.
Wow, what a difference this makes for swamp- I'd say for
me, this improved the whole shooting experience by 3 times
 or more!
Seriously, if you like guns, buy one, if you like games
with guns, buy one, if you like swamp, buy one.
This is the one I bought:
 http://www.ebay.com/itm/Monstergecko-Pistol-Mouse-FPS-Gun-Controller-NEW-/270764979313?pt=Micehash=item3f0ad9b471

It's about seven inches in length, five inches tall on the
base, light and easy to handle- just plug it into USB and
 it's ready for use.
It's shaped like a futuristic wheelgun, with the mouse
wheel as the chamber, trigger is left mouse button and the
right mouse button on the grip- so as I grab my new gun, I
 walk forward in swamp.
 My only two complaints:
1: I prefer more weight on the trigger so it's more like a
 real gun.
 and
2: This makes using axe a tad...strange...anyone know if
 they sell axe-shaped mouse? rofl

It doesn't really make me play better- but it definitely
makes for better gaming experience- just imagine that thrill
going through you whenever you pull that trigger instead of
 mashing that flat mouse key!

No one ever kicked ass by saying I can't.

What kinds of games are you specifically interested in here. There are
several cross-platform games that can be played on a Mac using
VoiceOver such as browser based games, muds, text adventures, and of
course RS Games game client which offers Uno, Monopoly, and things
like that.

Hi Lindsay,

Well, I can tell you one of the factors that makes or breaks a game is
having enough peasants to get things built, to gather raw materials,
and of course serve as extra troops when needed. So my recommendation
is build a couple of farms and then give yourself about 10 peasants to
get started. After you have established a decent sized work force you
can begin mining for gold, creating lumber for buildings, and add a
few foot soldiers to guard your territory. After that expand as
needed and upgrade your military so you can fend off and eventually
wipe out the enemy forces.

Cheers!

Re: [Audyssey] BGT competition - any interest?

2011-12-27 Thread Sarah Haake

Hi Jeremy and list,

wow, I think you think too much in your own terms here Jeremy. We all
know that your programming speed is lightning fast and I certainly can
imagine that you wouldn't know on what to spend three months when
programming a new game.

But most of us never programmed something and most of us never used BGT
yet, so we really would need some time to get into it before we could
release a fully featured game. If these games shell be somewhat
innovative, as bugfree as possible and with good sound quality, most of
use would get an idea ready in one month, but no complete game.

You also have to account for private life, regular jobs, school work
etc. There very well will be some people here who just can't work on
this game every day, least of all hours a day to get it ready in just
one month. If I would participate in such a competion, I'd not be
willing to set everything else aside for it. If I have other
appointments or things I want to do instead, I want to be able to do it
without risking to not meet the deadline.

And, if you put such a preasure on people, most likely the games won't
be as good as when there was enough time to do it.

So, this one month deadline might be alright for experienced programmers
like yourself, but certainly not for people who want to try there first
game and need some time to learn BGT first. And the truth is, most of us
are no experienced programmers.

So, if this competion runs maybe for three momths instead of one, I
certainly will think about participating. But I won't expose myself to
the preasure I'll be under when it's just one month.

Best regards
Sarah

You got some of the principles, but way off on others.
The ailerons on the ends of the wings are what lets the plane turn
left or right. You get this motion by moving the yoke left or right.
By pushing forward or pulling back on the yoke causes the Elevators
on the tail wings to raise or lower the planes level of flight. By
giving the plane more or less power. Gives more or less wind on the
wings surface to assist in these movements. Speed only makes you go
faster or slower. Depending on wait of plane determines how much
speed it takes to keep it in the air. Not all planes have rudders,
and those that do move along with the ailerons.

Um Trouble, I have hours logged in an actual cockpit, have helped
rebuild
aircraft and have an aeronautical engineer/pilot for a stepfather.
Trust

me, when you increase power, you climb, unless you trim the aircraft to
prevent it, just as when you decrease power, you descend, unless you
trim
the aircraft or deploy flaps to increase the wing surface area. here
are

some very basic aerodynamics.

Lift is proportional to wing area and increases with angle of
attack. it
also increases with increasing velocity of airflow over the wing,
(possibly

with the square of that velocity, I don't remember for sure.) Increase
engine power in level flight, increase aircraft speed. increase
aircraft
speed, increase speed of air over the wing surface, thus increasing
lift.

The ailerons increase the angle of attack for their wing. Move the
stick
left, increase the AoA on the right wing, producing more lift. This
rolls
the aircraft left, and does produce a small turning moment as well.
But if
you want to turn sharply, you quarter roll the aircraft and pull up
on the

stick. This pulls the aircraft through your turn more quickly than any
rudder-and-aileron alone turn can. You can also roll and push the stick
forward for a negative-gee maneuver, but aircraft will typically turn
more

tightly in a positive-gee regime.

There are aircraft where the rudder and ailerons are automatically
coordinated, but given the need to cross-control (to perform a
side-slip for

instance, I'm guessing there are overrides even for the most modern,
fly-by-wire jets. Obviously, I haven't flown an F16, though I have
spoken

to people who have.

Anyone that has flown and had time at the stick would of ben told
this info after all its basic flying. You want hard flying try a
helicopter.

I have flown just about all types of RC models from airplanes to
hover craft. Now working on helicopters indoor type and out. Ben
playing with these big boy toys for past 30 years and most of it being
blind.

I have never flown a helicopter, but based on what I've been told and
read,
I'd agree that it's probably much harder than fixed-wing aircraft.
As for
the rest of this paragraph, I'm trying to see how you aren't accusing
me of
lying, because that would be rude and disrespectful. I have flown
various
Sesna aircraft, as well as a Fairchild PT23, which is an open-cockpit
WWII
era primary trainer with aerobatic capabilities. I have survived and
walked
away from a plane crash. (Piper cub got flipped over by a freak
crosswind

gust on landing, everyone but the plane was ok.)

I don't know what feedback you get flying an RC aircraft, not knowing
your
vision level, but in order to comment disagree with my statements
based on
your experience, you're going to have to convince me that you are in
full
knowledge of exactly what your aircraft is doing at every moment in
response
to your control commands. You are also going to have to convince me
that,
having actual sensory feedback in a cockpit, I don't know what I'm
talking

about. Good luck with that.

So with It's your plane and zero sight sims. You do get a good idea
of flying by sim.

I must respectfully but completely disagree.

Re: [Audyssey] release dates that can not be adhered to

2011-12-27 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi William,

That's precisely why I don't give release dates myself. I know given
my hectic schedule that a game will get done when it gets done and no
sooner. Trying to put a release date on it only adds a lot of
unnecessary pressure to complete it without setbacks, technical
problems, and any number of problems that might pop up between the
time the developer starts the project and releases it. So no I don't
think a developer should give a fixed release date for a game unless
they are absolutely certain they can meet the deadline.

Re: [Audyssey] Fw: Eamon Deluxe Update-12-27-2011

2011-12-27 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Dark,

Unfortunately, this looks like a step backwards instead of forwards to
me. The reason Dosbox is inaccessible to a screen reader is because it
doesn't use the Windows API and uses a cross-platform generic graphics
toolkit. Since it doesn't use an API the screen readers were designed
to support the screen readers basically don't know what to do with it.

This is and has always been the problem with screen reader technology.
Each operating system has a default graphics toolkit such as the
Windows API for Windows, GTK+ for Linux, and Cocoa that the screen
reader was designed to support through specialized hooks in the API.
When a developer goes off the beaten path uses a non-standard API the
screen reader can't access the onscreen information because there
probably aren't any low-level hooks to pass important information on
to the screen reader or the screen reader was never designed to
support them if it does.

Something like the Windows XP Command Prompt is accessible because it
was designed using the Windows API. All of the menus and the command
prompt itself are all standard Windows controls which the screen
readers know about and can directly support through the Windows API
hooks. Where Dosbox obviously uses something else to make it
cross-platform and screen readers don't know what is on the screen
because the app is failing to broadcast that information through the
Windows API.

Cheers!

and os, I just did a couple 1 may come back and I know that another 2
will be here in a couple weeks with their main server coming in the
middle of january.
All these things need to bee assessed, reconfigured, adjusted if
needed, not sure about all the units but I know at least 1 the server
needs a reformat.
So this competition would really help me relieve my stress during
trying to keep to deadlines, some of this stuff needs to be done in
a sertain time as some of the people are well outside the country etc, etc.
So yeah, with stressfull things like that work, something other to
think of at least in the situations where I actualy get some time to
run through would really rock.

Re: [Audyssey] BGT competition - any interest?

2011-12-27 Thread Jeremy Kaldobsky
Actually I think this is a bit tricky. While I think Dark is correct that some
newer developers would need more time, I also think that some of the other
developers would only need the month. If you give people too much time it can
cause just as many problems as when they are too short on time.

I'll use myself as an example since I don't plan to participate anyway. If I
were given 3 months to work on a game, I would likely feel finished after
only a few weeks. Basically my plans for the game would have all been
implemented and I would feel that I'd ironed out the bugs. The extra time
would either be wasted or I would attempt to tack-on additional things to the
game.

If I had stopped super early I will likely lose to someone who used every bit
of their available time. If I had slowly added more, there would be a very
real risk that the features wouldn't seem well balanced or would be very buggy
since none of them were in the original plan for the game. If you just
finished the last sentence in a novel and someone tells you to quickly throw in
a new main character, something just won't feel right in the end since
everything will have to be changed around to even make the addition possible.

If we had built a space invaders game and suddenly had to add an enemy that
sounds like pew pew to the existing group that goes pow pow it isn't really
an issue. I'm referring to game features that are a little bigger than this,
hehe!

I think the other issue will be the length of time that programmers can plan
out. I for one, am not very good at this. If I was given 1 month to work on a
game, I would have to plan out a design that would use up as much of that month
as possible without going over. This would end up with the least amount of
wasted time and the most complex game at the end. Making that kind of judgment
while just planning out a game's idea is tricky, but the longer the span of
time, the harder it becomes. If I had 2 or 3 weeks I think I could pretty
accurately judge the time. If I had a month I'd likely just stick with a 2 or
3 week plan. If you gave me 3 months I wouldn't have the slightest idea what I
could or could not add to get me close to that deadline. So the contest would
come down to who was better at making that guess, and thus, had time to finish
their game.

Yes I used myself for the example, but the idea is that every programmer has
their own comfort zone for creating a game and for being able to plan features
within that deadline. I can't say whether a month is good or bad for most of
the developers who will be involved, but I just can't imagine trying to plan
out 3 months of work and even being close to correct at the end. Haha, perhaps
I'm just projecting my own shortcomings on to other developers. :D

And also, I might be over thinking this whole thing. :)

 Hi Philip.

My only thought is that a month is a bit of a short time,
and so any first time developers wouldn't have time to do
something more impressive than a simple game, while those
who are developing more complex game probably either already
have the ful license or are thinking of buying it.

Change this to a quarterly competition ie, every three
months to give people more time, and I think your probably
 onto something.

 Beware the grue!

 Dark.

[Audyssey] Airic the cleric question

2011-12-27 Thread Sarah Haake

Hi list,

since I got myself a new laptop for christmas on which Windows 7 is
running, I finally can play Airic the cleric, yay.

For one I noticed that there still quite a few bugs in the game,
especially with sounds which play when they shouldn't and such things.
But I guess it is still playable.

But now I'm a bit stuck in the game. For everyone who doesn't know the
game yet, I'll give a spoiler warning here.

l
e
r

Ok, I killed the first boss in the game and brought the hammer back to
the temple. But now I don't know where to go next. I noticed a door
leading out of the village on the south side now and found one enemy and
a tresure chest with a power cube inside, but I can't find another way
where I could continue.

I know that some form of ice palace should come next, but as I said, I
can't find a new way to go.

So, everyone who played the game already, help is much appreciated.
*smiles*

Btw, on the game website there are 2 secret areas listed that are in
this first game. Will I get to these areas when I simply follow the main
story or do I have to search for them seperately? If it's the latter, I
just want to make sure I go there before the game ends so I go
everywhere, that's why I'm asking, so I can keep a look out for secret
stuff.

Thanks in advance for any help and best regards
Sarah

Well I've sent a message explaining the situations and registering my
disappointment, but I doubt it'll do any good sinse I don't think the
developer will change his format just for access.

Im a litle frustrated with the eamon situation.

99 percent of the games are purely text and do nothing whacky, and you'd
think that having a windows interpreter for them would be no more complex
than for any other of the old if formats, yet nobody seems at all bothered!

I'd really like to see a propper accessible windows interpreter that can
just read the old eamon files and play the games.

There are barely any text rpgs, and from what I've gathered through limited
playing with the current version of eamon delux, these are just the sort of
games we've been looking for, all in text.

Beware the grue!

Cheers!

all of the details yet, nor am I 100 % certain that I will go ahead with
the
competition. However, if the interest is great enough, then I'll
definitely
run with it. If you are interested, please also specify whether you would
participate if we went ahead. If I get 4 or more interested participants,
then I will be certain to get rolling as early as January.

Thanks for reading and let me know your thoughts!

 Kind regards,

 Philip Bennefall

Re: [Audyssey] BGT competition - any interest?

Fair enough. I think everyone would have a very different amount of time that
they would find ideal. No matter how long the contest would be set for, some
people will find it either too long or too short. Hopefully it would be set
though, to where the most people were happy.

 Hi Jeremy and list,

these games shell be somewhat innovative, as bugfree as
possible and with good sound quality, most of use would get
an idea ready in one month, but no complete game.

You also have to account for private life, regular jobs,
school work etc. There very well will be some people here
who just can't work on this game every day, least of all
hours a day to get it ready in just one month. If I would
participate in such a competion, I'd not be willing to set
everything else aside for it. If I have other appointments
or things I want to do instead, I want to be able to do it
without risking to not meet the deadline.

And, if you put such a preasure on people, most likely the

So, this one month deadline might be alright for

Re: [Audyssey] BGT competition - any interest?

2011-12-27 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Nancy,

Yes, there is a trial version of BGT. Basically, if you download BGT
without a license key you can write games, but you can not compile
them to a Windows executable. Instead you have to run the source code
through the BGT runtime interpretor. Which will run a little slower,
and if you redistribute the scripts everyone has access to your
source. So for general distribution you probably want at least a basic
shareware license which costs $29.

As far as documentation goes BGT comes with everything you need to get
started. There is an audio manual plus there is a help file filled
with descriptions of every function available through the engine. Plus
on the Blastbay website there are some free games with source you can
look at to get a basic idea of how to get started.

Cheers!

Just a word of warning though, it may seem dawnting at first. Heck, it still
does to me and I've been tinkering with it for almost a year. Granted
personal issues sort of sidelined my BGT practice and I haven't really found

to do with the fact that I was working on yet another Simon game and I've

[Audyssey] swamp-it's pure fate

So, I went a goodly month or more without dying...I had loads of ammo, I was at
the top of my world...
So this morning I thought, why not tag a few undead before work...then I
realized that I was going to be late for work- so I made a dashe for safe zone
all the way from the other side of the map...
I must've angered the zombie god, cause a massive group of them caught up with
me just as I got to southwestern corner of the map...I emptied my rifle, then
my pistol, no time to reload, they kept coming and biting, emptied my auto
shotgun, then my mp5, they kept coming, I went to grab the axe, axe was
missing---perfect timing...I went to grab med kitt, and hit tab instead and
speech went bye bye and then everything faded to gray as I was eaten alive...
Though I still find losing everything a tad pissy, I must say, I made a great
account of myself in that final battle rofl- if I had my axe, or didn't hit
wrong key for med kitt, I probably would've survived- but still, I probably
took over 20 down with me and all without either m60 or vulcan lol.
Well, time to build from ground up again!

[Audyssey] Competition time was Re: BGT competition - any interest?

2011-12-27 Thread Philip Bennefall

Hi guys,

I've been thinking about the duration of the competition as well as the time
it might potentially take for new people to familiarize themselves with the
engine, and have come up with the following.

What about having the competition last for 2 months, starting on February
first? This would mean that those who wanted to learn more about the engine
had plenty of time to do so before the contest begins, and that those who
are less familiar with programming in general would have a bit longer to
complete the task. But when it comes down to it, the competition probably is
not suitable for those who know nothing about either BGT or programming in
general. But there's not much I can do about that. This is just one way in
which I want to, A, encourage the use of the BGT engine by a greater number
of people and, B, get some exciting new games published.

Let me know what you think of these suggestions.

Kind regards,

Philip Bennefall

Re: [Audyssey] Airic the cleric question

2011-12-27 Thread dark

Myself, i'm stil frustrated with the xp bug.

while I'm not going to kick up a huge fuss, it is hugely frustrating to play
a great demo, preorder something and then have it continually not run even
though the demo was fine. not that I particularly mind the 9 dollars, heck I
spend that much on coffee a sandwich and some cake a couple of times a week,
and I do appreciate the project (one reason why I tried to help with the
voice acting), but I am a litle irritated that i don't get to play the game.

Myself I do wonder if Jyro followed the correct approach with the game,
using this graphic shell with audio overlay business, sinse from people's
comments I don't believe it has been as stable or successful as it should
be.

Then again, maybe I'd think differently if it worked on either of my
machines :D.

Reportedly though, jake has a new game coming out very soon, so we'll see
how that goes.

Beware the grue!

Hi Lisa,

No, I don't remember the game, but it sounds cool. If it is a Dos
text adventure I'd imagine it would be pretty easy to port to Windows
or at least build a 32-bit or 64-bit Dos version for modern Windows
releases.

Cheers!

I'm glad you are able to play the game at all. I just bought a new

Re: [Audyssey] Competition time was Re: BGT competition - any interest?

2011-12-27 Thread Sarah Haake

^Hi Philip,

I must say that I don't completely understand what you really want with
this competition.

First you say that you want to encourage more people to use BGT to make
new games, then you say that this is nothing for complete beginners.

Well, everyone here who knows about game programming already does that
and brings games to us, no matter if they use BGT or not. So, if you
don't want to encourage newcomers with this competition, who else? You
don't need to encourage people who already know about programming to do
so, they do it already. So, what is the point here?

Btw, I think to say something like this isn't for newcomers does
discourage people, but not encourage anyone. I myself am not completely
new to programing itself, but new to game programming. But after what
you just wrote, I wouldn't be very encouraged to participate in this
competition.

Best regards
Sarah

Did you talk to the man who lost his pet? He's on the north side of the
village. Now head into the temple again. There are two doors on the north
wall. The leftmost one leads to a room full of cabinets. Smash the cabinets
and you should find a mouse. Take it back to the pet owner to get a third
cube. Now take the rightmost door on the temple's north wall. In here there
should be a floor switch, so trigger it. Now look along the temple's south
wall for a door. Inside tis room is a treasure chest with cube four. There's
also a door on the east wall. This door would have been locked if you'd come
here before triggering that floor switch. This door leads to a garden area
with a treasure chest that contains the first health increase.
Now head back to the woods area you accessed by showing the hammer to the
lieutenant. Head all the way south and then all the way west, cutting the
flower bed as you go. When you've gone as far west as you can, head south.
THe music should change and you'll be in Cerulean Cove. There are two cubes
you can get here. One is on an island in te ocean. Just swim and scan around
until you hear what sounds like a pal tree in the water. Swim for that area
to be on the island. Open the chest to get a cube. That should round out the
tally at five. Hope this helps.

Re: [Audyssey] Competition time was Re: BGT competition - any interest?

2011-12-27 Thread Philip Bennefall

Hi Sarah,

Oh, let me clarify what I meant. My intention was certainly not to
discourage people, but rather just to explain why I had chosen the
particular duration. If someone is completely new to programming, then it
may not be possible for them to enter a competition of this kind immediately
before they have at least a fundamental grasp of the concepts. How long this
takes is very different from person to person, and so if I took that into
account it would be nearly impossible to fix a deadline. So what I meant to
say was basically that in order to participate, you should have at least a
basic understanding of either BGT, or general programming. That would allow
you to pick up the tool and hopefully make something interesting within the
time frame. So in short, my intention was not to come across as negative or
discouraging in any way but merely to explain my thinking behind the
duration of the competition.

Kind regards,

Philip Bennefall

Sarah

[Audyssey] Suggestion about the list

2011-12-27 Thread dark
Hi.

Obviously one major purpose of the games list is to answer questions about
games.

It seems one of the most common is the where do I get games question. I don't
mean someone asking about where to get stratogy games or games with a fantasy
theme, I mean the question of where to get audio games generally!

For this reason, I do wonder if it might be possible to put links to the lists
at www.pcsgames.net and www.audiogames.net on the confirmation E-mail that
people get when subscribing to the list, or if it isn't possible to alter the
text of that mail, put together a sort of short welcome mail with those links
and perhaps any other useful information in a very quick and easy page that
people get when they join.

that way new members can start finding games streight off the bat when they
join up, rather than having to sit on list and (as a recent new member put it),
wonder where we all find these games that we're discussing.

Of course, I suspect people will stil ask about their favourite game types or
subject matter, or games on a given os, but stil this might help to at least
give people a bit of a start, and avoid the where do I get games generally
type of questions.

I could have a bash at knocking up some sort of short info welcome message with
a couple of links myself if that would help, though if tom, Raul or damian as
the list mods, or indeed anyone else wants to have a crack at doing this that
is also okay.

Beware the grue!

Hey, All.
I have tried both of these games this afternoon.
Both games are very accessible for the blind.
From what I can tell the only difference between the two are, Voice
controlled blackjack is the free version and Blackjack with gino is the
paid version.

I also think that with the paid version you get more features.
I really enjoy the paid version which is call blackjack with gino.
So if any of you are fans of blackjack then go and get the game and
listen to all the funny stuff that the dealer say.

Subject: [Audyssey] BGT competition - any interest?

Hi all,

I wanted to see whether there is an interest among the existing or
potentially interested users of the BGT engine, in a competition that I am
thinking of arranging. It would go under thane name The BGT Month
Marathon, and the objective would be to create an audio game within one
month. The public would then vote on a few aspects of each game such as
sound quality, stability, playability, innovation, etc. All of these
scores would be added up to form the final score for each game, and the
one with the highest over-all score would win. The contestants would of
course be able to vote as well, on anything other than their own creation.
The prise would be a free license of BGT Pro Unlimited.

So why am I holding this competition, and giving away a prise worth 400
dollars? For one simple reason. I want to encourage the use of the BGT
engine to create new and exciting games. If we can bring some fun into the
creation process as well, then all the better!

Now, I wanted to see what you all think of this idea? I have not planned
out all of the details yet, nor am I 100 % certain that I will go ahead
with the competition. However, if the interest is great enough, then I'll
definitely run with it. If you are interested, please also specify whether
you would participate if we went ahead. If I get 4 or more interested
participants, then I will be certain to get rolling as early as January.

Thanks for reading and let me know your thoughts!

Kind regards,

Philip Bennefall
