Re: [Audyssey] blindgameware
Hi tom. ? wel describing them similar to lolly pops or jaw breakers makes a bit more sense to me, sinse we do have those, though a couple of others things you mention like life savers we don't. ? the soft candy as you mentioned gummies etc are generally called jellies over here, particularly in the form of jelly babies that are shaped like sort of people and come in fruite flavours relative to their colour. The 4th doctor actually used to carry around jelly babies in his pocket, and scenes of him walking up to threatening aliens and saying in the unique tone that only tom baker could would you like a jelly baby! was hilarious! ? I also remember a wonderfull occasion in colidge when I was trying to write an essay on carl marks in just one night, frantically trying to find a copy of capital on the internet in English, and because colidge in their infinite wisdom had stopped serving food and because I didn't have time for the half hour walk down into town, that meant all I could get to sustain myself was what I could find at the vending machine, this being a very large bag of jelly babies and a bottle of red bull! ? weerdly enough the essay did rather well! :D. ? there are also lots of other things, jelly snakes, jelly worms, jelly coler bottles, rings, fried eggs etc, though confusingly enough jelly beans doesn't quite refer to the same stuff sinse jelly beans also have a hard coating and tend to come in different flavours, indeed when berty bots' every flavour beans were markited they were basically jelly beans in different types. ? There are also some sweets that are made of soft, chewy more pure sugar that is not jelly, and usually come in quite bright colours, and one very popular sweet for young children is dolly mixtures, which tend to be a mix of these brightly coloured sugar sweets in different sorts and the more chewable jellies. ? there is then of course if we're talking about chewy sweets, lickerish, particularly lickerish alsorts which are a collection of different chewable sweets often with the solid sugar stuff I mentioned but involving lickerish, which has a rather unique flavour that some people like and others don't. ? I've myself always been more of a fan of biscuites, toffee, or chocolate (and with as muchcoco as possible), as opposed to the more pure sugar type of sweets, though my brother is a fan of jellies particularly harribo, and there was an old man who was a friend of my parents (sort of a surrogate granddad), who used to always buy my brother and I lickerish alsorts especially at christmas, so once in a while I get some to remind me of him specifically. ? Generally though for me chocolate, biscuits and caramel take pride of place, indeed I have to go shopping later today and I just might treat myself to some stem ginger biscuits, the sort that have actual chunks of fairly chewy ginger route in them. ? Re: [Audyssey] blindgameware
Thom, I'll just say this to try and correct you now First, we do have candy canes, although they are really associated with Christmas. And second of all, isn't that slightly prejudiced against the u.k? so everyone else uses the u.s. version and the u.k. uses a different one? I'm not sure whether that's fair. And i'll be honest, the reason why we think the Christian views of the u.s, are so nuts, is that they are so up front with their views, seemingly meant to be converting and forced on others. Although, this is certainly not true, it just comes across that way both in fiction and in reality, in certain cases. But if I have offended any on this list by saying what I think - my opinions, I will be happy to make apologies. I just finished reading the web page you linked to below and besides a very informative read I now understand why when Scholastic reprinted the Harry Potter books for the U.S. market they performed extensive rewriting of the actual text. While the British and Americans might both speak English the fact of the matter is there is far more differences between Britain and America than just language. There are plenty of social and cultural issues to consider here. While most Americans probably wouldn't have a problem of using post instead of mail there are British terms that would be slightly offensive to Americans. Off the top of my head I'll take the issue of using the toilet. Where I live we tend to indirectly say what we mean by saying we have to go to the bathroom, we want to use the restroom, or as my Grandma would say the lady's room. If someone were more direct and saying they have to use the toilet many would find that a bit crude and uncouth. My grandma would no sooner have said use the toilet than she would have said she needed to take a crap or pee because it would have been too direct and uncouth. Of course, this is changing as younger Americans feel more comfortable of saying what they mean. That said, I found it interesting that the article you posted states that in Britain they don't have the fundamentalist Christian groups like we have in the U.S. The author went as far to say that most British people would feel more comfortable about talking about their sex life than their religion. I found it a bit funny he stated most British people find our brand of fundamentalist Christianity insincere or down right nuts. Here in the U.S. that's totally the opposite in places like the Bible Belt and running into someone with a fundamentalist point of view is pretty common. I should know since I'm married to one. :D Anyway, getting back to the topic at hand, I do see the problem here of Candy Land Vs. something else. To begin with a Gingerbread Cookie in the U.S. is a small crunchy cookie in the shape of a gingerbread man. What you chaps would call a biscuit. From what I've managed to read is that Candy Canes simply do not exist in Britain and seems to be an American sweet. A Sour Patch is a round gummy sweet that is very sweet and very sour at the same time. They tend to be very sticky when you lick them so I guess that's why landing on one causes you to lose a turn in the game. Bottom line, I think what we'd have to do if we created a Candy Land game is have a custom version for the U.K. From what I gather your concepts of sweets is fairly different from ours with sweets we don't have here, and sweets we have here aren't popular over there. Its no wonder certain things like Candy Cane Forests don't make sense to you because you don't have them. Then again, there are a lot of things about British lifestyle and American life style that are so different its like stepping into the Twilight Zone or something. I remember reading about British chocolate, how its made, and it sounds completely disgusting to me. Of course, I've never tried it so can't comment from experience, but its definitely different from what I'd be use to as an American. Same goes for the British concept of hot chocolate. The author who wrote that article you sent stated that most British people don't drink hot chocolate with marshmallows in it. To be honest I find that hard to believe because almost every American I know would kill you if you left the marshmallows out of their hot chocolate. Its as though we aren't living in too separate countries but on two different planets in cases like that. Lol! Cheers! On 9/6/12, dark d...@xgam.org wrote: Hi Tom. Re: [Audyssey] Dentin's apparent space game?
Don't know if anyone is familiar with the now seemingly ancent games Buck Rogers and the Doomsday device (an RPG style strategy game from Strategic Simulations Inc for the sighted coomunity), or Star Control (from Sega I believe), once again, for the sighted. Buck Rogers was based off the same game engine as the Dungeons - Original Message - and Dragons SSI engine that Pool of Radience, Pools of Darkness, Curse of the azure bonds, Gateway to the savage frontier, etc was based on. It allowed for limmited ship to ship combat, party combat, puzzle solving, interaction with other races and non player characters, etc. Star control was similar, but was not all that individual combat based. Ship to ship combat was there, but it was more arcade style, build your ship up with better weapons and shileds and pummel the offenders to scrap and then salvage leftovers. There was more planet exploration and mining though. Not sure if you can use either as a reference though, or if that is even what ou are looking for. Just a thought. I've certainly heard of star control before, and of the DD games, and there are still more on the net for example I heard about a game called transcendence created by the same developer as that text based sf empire building game anacreon, but unfortunately it's fully graphical and the combat is real time despite it having skills, plot, exploration, npc interaction, different characters and such. This is again what is frustrating, sinse though there are lots of text based scifi empire building mmorpgs, scifi trading morpgs, or scifi spaceship flying mmorpgs, all of them are basically focused on roleplay, raising stats and beating the other player, not on what is for me the most interesting thing about a scifi setting, seaking out new worlds, exploring new life and new civilizations etc. The only exception is core exiles, but even there the exploration system isn't as major a part of the game as I would like, and also much of the focus of the game is on economics, production and advancement, though exploration sis a little more of a mainstream activity than the sideline affair it used to be. Still, I'd love to see a game where full ship flying and exploration of the area around you was the main focus, just the way that in alter there are massive mazelike zones with interesting things to find in them and the explorer points system even rewards you for doing so. Re: [Audyssey] Dentin's apparent space game?
Given that the game is just an idea and a plan right now, I can't say a whole lot about it will or won't be. Like most of the things I build, it will probably start out as something simple that gets expanded over time. What I have settled on is a flat, two dimensional universe, with players starting roughly in the center near coordinates 0,0 and the edges being at around coordinates plus or minus two billion. I'm going to be keeping with the idea that one coordinate unit is about a light year, to make things easy. I've got code to create a handful of different types of galaxies, which will be scattered at random about the grid. Players will start about 3/4 of the way out on a 100k light year spiral galaxy, similar to where we sit in the milky way in real life. All this talk of galaxies is probably pointless, since as a player you're never likely to even leave the starting galaxy, but if we want to expand into them, we can. Even just the starting galaxy will have between 100 million and a billion star systems in it, depending on what I set the density factors for. To create the star systems and planets, I have a very detailed generator that has been lounging in my codebase for a long time. Things like the graphics for the planet surface are probably not needed for this project, which makes things a bit easier. Here's a list of some other stuff that I'm pretty sure will be in the final version: - a couple different nebula types, which may or may not have interesting effects on ships - naming star systems if you're the first one in it - submitting habitable planets as colonization candidates - interstellar wormholes scattered about that allow fast travel between regions Because of the way the star systems are constructed, I'll have to think about the best way to handle mining. I'd also like to add random alien generation as well, but I may simply have to just go with building them manually at the creator level. This said, talk is cheap. I'll let you know more as I progress on it, but there's a lot of other things in the way first, and I have to make sure I stay on top of Alter Aeon. Hi Darren. To be honest the civ elements for me would be better in another game, one with a structure more like castaways where events were far more randomized and control indirect thus leading to very reactive decisions needed on the part of the player rather than just trying to make the best setup and leaving it to run as is the way with most stratogy outings unfortunately. I agree, which is exactly why i'd so love to see a more free form exploration system in a space game. i'm told miriani has something like it, but when your exploration can be cut off and all your gear blown up by anyone who's been having a bad day for no reason it just makes the hole thing pointless to me. Hey Dark. I'd love to see a Space shutle simulator. But I'd be willing to stress test out any space game to throw in my two cents upon. Re: [Audyssey] Dentin's apparent space game?
Hey dennis. How about a space shuttle simulator? Or a deep space 9 or star trek game. I for one didn't like the star trek games that came out since in my opinion they were taking a two d game and trying to make it fit into a three d world. In this blind person's opinion, the grid games just doesn't work out. Now I appreciate what Jim did with his puppy three ww2 dog fighting game. Maybe Jim would let you use the way you fly in his game to see where you are at. If you need a beta tester? Please think of me. Hi, I wanted to let anyone who was having trouble with the football game that I finally got it to work. I had noticed that when it came to the opponents coach that there was a % sign in that field. When I removed it and put my own coach name in it I still was having the same problem, but if I just hit enter after removing the % sign it seems that I could play the game. Re: [Audyssey] Dentin's apparent space game?
Hi dentin. I love the setup idea, particularly the idea that space is so dam huge and that exploring and naming planets and systems is a major part of the game. thinking about the aliens there seem to be two extremes. Either have some sort of creature generation process that mixes adverbs and ai characteristics, or to have prewritten races to encounter. The problem is the first approaach would end up with some rather ridiculous results, the yellow scaly spider cyborgs who build underwater cities and live on a barren rocky planet? Check out this creature Generator for DD style monsters http://www.apolitical.info/webgame/creature which is very amusing to play with but also shows the problems of such systems. On the other hand, preprogrammed aliens would firstly mean a lot of work, and also mean populating the galaxy with sufficiently diverse alien races to give the feel of exploration quite difficult. So, how about design some basic alien species, but then set the game in a universe where many of these species have been scattered, and thus mutated or formed odd groupings, or perhaps a universe where some sort of elder race actually seeded various worlds with species, so many are ditantly related even though they come from different planets. thus you could play with a couple of random elements, skin colour or basic nature, but leave most of the description and behaviour the same. For example there might be various insect alien species who live in hives and have biological technology, but if you come upon a new one they could be small and green and very low tech but quite willing to accept and trade with outsiders, or large and red with rough skin with an aggressive, warrior culture that would tolerate outsiders and perhaps even work as mercinaries, but wouldn't be friendly enough to trade or the liek, or smedium sized and white with a fanatic religious dogma and highly evolved technology who seak to convert or destroy anyone in their path to the worship of their hive mind who is also their God. I know your still in the planning stages as yet, but this is just a suggestion when your working out the code for aliens, sinse I'd love to see a game that like the best sf also gave us lots of aliens to interact with, who's nature or intentions weren't always clear. In mechanics terms this would translate to newly discovered locations being either full of hostile creatures who'd attack anyone who was even in the surrounding area, teretorial creatures who would attack only if you go into their immediate vicinity, aggressive creatures who might work as mercinaries or offer other bennifits but only if you prove your worth in combat, or various more peaceful species you could establish some sort of trading relations or bennifits with (or instance a very industrial race might be willing to trade advanced mining technology for resources, while a religious or spiritual race might offer repares, healing or other bennifits but only upon you carrying out some tasks for them, indeed making certain technologies, character skills and other items n game only available from certain alien races could be a really interesting idea dn encourage people to explore even further. Dark, once you get a few more levels I think you'd really like the northern continent area. It's full of those kinds of puzzles. [Audyssey] winglulx
Hi. How do I play inform7 games accessably. I have git but it doesn't work with nvda. I have glulx for windows but I have no idea how to set it up. Yes I have oriol's nvda module but don't know how to use it. the about description and names are not in english and i have no idea what else to do. I have fiddled in the options and there are styles for text display and other stuff but don't know what they mean or what I should set things to. right now the text is majorly delayed, and nvda is out the question. supernova will work but then I loose half my enjoyment because I have to be reminded of being a poor blind retard and I am in a document viewing session. Thats one thing I miss about the keynote system and dos6 never had to do much. I could get lost in a game, now I am to aware of my surroundings because I have to continously review the screen. and sapi, forget it. Then there are all the toolbars and other junk should I kill em? However if winglulx just has to may things with it I may as well just use supernova with git. Sorry if I am rambling, guess I havn't forgotten the old days. Oh if only I never picked up games till now, I wouldn't know what it was like. --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. This sounds potentially as big as warring factions. Hi dark, The challenge though is to get it to an independent stage in the first place and also to make it become a functional part of the universe. If the economy is player driven then it would make it that much harder to maintain. -Original Message- From: gamers-boun...@audyssey.org [mailto:gamers-boun...@audyssey.org] On Behalf Of dark Sent: 08 September 2012 16:57 To: Gamers Discussion list Subject: Re: [Audyssey] Dentin's apparent space game? [Audyssey] Accessible games for the Mac and a question re Audio Archery
Hi all, I used to own a Windows machine and used to enjoy playing a lot of the accessible games. However, I am now using a Mac and am wondering if there are any standalone accessible games I can try? HI David, Not many that I can name off hand. There is Jean-Luc's SoundRTS game for Mac, there is a Space Invaders clone called Terrestrial Invaders, Audio Quake, Apple Chess, and loads of interactive fiction type games. Really at the moment that is pretty much the size of it as far as accessible games for Mac OS goes. I know Draconis Entertainment have something in the works for Mac OS, but what it is they haven't said. If you are looking for something like Tank Commander, Shades of Doom, or even the Kitchens Inc games your best bet is to install a copy of Windows via Bootcamp or setup a Windows virtual machine using VMWare Workstation. Hmmm, interesting move on the developer's part though. I'll definitely have to try it, but I'm pretty sure that bashing out tunes without the specific controllers won't yield the same amount of fun here. Hi listers: I'm Gerardo from Mexico; though I've been out of the loop of computer games for some years, until a friend recommended some games recently I began to get the bug again. Re: [Audyssey] Greetings
Hi Gerardo, Welcome to the list. As you said you have been out of the loop for quite a while there are a number of games that have come out over the last year or two. Of particular interest to many is the Swamp FPS Shooter game, Castaways real time strategy game, Towers of War, and a couple of other good titles by Aprone. To checkout those games go to http://www.kaldobsky.com/audiogames/. Also GMA has released Time of Conflict in 2010 which is really one of the best real time strategy games out there right now. As always those can be found at www.gmagames.com. Che Martin of Blind Adrenaline has put together some very nice card games which certainly are worth looking at here http://blindadrenaline.com/cardRoom/Default.aspx. Philip Bennefall has produced a number of titles including Q9, Kryngle Crash, and Palace Punch-Up, as well as his award winning BGT game engine. All of that can be found at blastbay.com. Those are just some of the new things you'll find happening on Audyssey and Audiogames.net these days. I'll leave it to others to fill in their suggestions. Cheers! Yes. Thanks to hearing about and given the Q9 for my birthday a few months ago, I became bitten by the game bug and thanks to blind friends from here, I got to know Dark Destroyer and others, but the Swamp and some of the other games you mentioned are new. songs will work in rock band 3 with standard instruments. for $15 you get 25 songs and a totally new game including free export, which is real neat. also any song on your hard drive is compatible with Blitz. Re: [Audyssey] Dentin's apparent space game?
to be honest darren I was thinking in my civ example of something that could be single player anyway, so that the events, controls and ai in the game could be unpredictable. There are plenty of games that will let you build an empire specifically to interact with other players, but those games for me just fail to be interesting because the environment is so static, and at least for me interactions with others do not intrinsically make an interesting game if the actual nuts and bolts of gameplay is just a matter of setting p a bunch of single things up and letting them run. Re: [Audyssey] Accessible games for the Mac and a question re Audio Archery
well I recomend you get bootcamp or vmware fusion and load a coppy of windows, win xp probably or whatever and play windows games from that. or load windows on a seperate partition of your mac. There are vary few games for mac that are standalone. You do have inform zcode frotz ofcause and the inform7 glulx and maybe git interpreters. over that I am not sure if you have tads but I know hugo is round. Audioquake when it existed was mac compatible. aND OFCAUSE you do have all the web games. I wander if you can probably since they were apple play eamon disk images nativly not sure if you can but all points that you must be able to. I am not sure if any agt games were mac but versions of the adventure gaming toolkit were mac complient though quite ancient. never the less you probably can run them. In fact there are are more than likely a host of interactive fiction titles that will be mac runnable. Over that though there isn't anything. There has been talk of game engine type things for macs but nothing is out yet. If you can get the resources though moosic though old and in fact any uncompiled source python game could run on mac python as I do know there is mac python. Ofcause you will have to search the net for most of it. ifarchive may have some of the ancient titles. Re: [Audyssey] Dentin's apparent space game?
well I am not really into muds. I wouldn't mind some sort of audio sim rpg or otherwise and if that could be net based all the better. Re: [Audyssey] Accessible games for the Mac and a question re Audio Archery
Hi Shaun, A few comments here if I may. To begin with don't assume just because something use to run on Mac or was developed by Apple several years ago that it will run on Mac OS 10.7. Things like the Aemon Guild Adventures for Apple were written for a totally different OS and hardware and certainly won't run natively on a modern Mac. Ain't goin' to happen. :D Regarding Python for Mac and the Moosic game. First, a modern Mac 10.7 system is probably running Python 2.7.2 or Python 2.7.3 which is the current production release for cross-platform developers, and is totally different from the version of Python use for Moosic. Therefore to even run Moosic on a modern Mac with the current Python version one would pretty much have to rewrite the game from scratch or spend the time necessary upgrading its outdated code. Second, the version of FMOD Ex it uses is A, extremely out of date, B, no longer supported, and C, no longer available from Firelight Technologies. Even worse Pysonic, the Python FMOD wrapper it uses for FMOD Ex,hasn't been updated in years far as I know which makes updating Moosic that much more difficult because one would have to update Pysonic as well. In other words if a person wants to play that game they'd be better off just rewriting it from scratch. Cheers! --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org.
