Hi Thomas,

Thank you. I was pretty much planning on going with the 32 bit system. I may
be wrong, but I also thought that Jaws had a problem with the 64 bit system.
But I was just thinking that the 32 bit system would be more friendly with my
old VB6 games and other old software that I like to run.

Thanks again and BFN

jaws works ok with 64 bit systems but you have to have jaws 10 or newer.

well I have always liked 32 bit systems I have had them all my life and
traditionally they are supported.
however win7 will be the last system you can run on them at the moment.
Frankly I still like xp, its old faithfull and although it has its issues
doesn't bother the user.

Hi Jim,
No, you don't need the SDK to include the Sapi dll file to a VB 6

is provides end user documentation, and the C++ headers and libs, plus

it is still there or can be added without the SDK.
As I mentioned before once the VB 6 runtime is installed your games
seames to work fine with Sapi 5.3 so you already know the basic code
anyway. There are some advanced features in 5.3 you aren't taking
advantage of, but for compatibility sake you know all you need to know
about Sapi for your games.
The one thing I don't know if it is compatible is the VB 6 IDE itself.

According to the Microsoft web site you need Visual Basic 2005 service
pack 1 or higher for Windows 7. Since I already have Visual Basic 2008
I've never tried installing and using anything earlier. So that might or
might not be a problem for you.
As far as voices goes let me just say here are the voices I have and
that work with Windows 7. First, I have all of the Scansoft voices that
shipped with Openbook 8 and Jaws 9 that are Sapi 5.x compatible and I've
had no problems with them. I also own Cepstral Callie 5 and she also
works with Windows 7 so I'd say all of the Cepstral 5 voices will work

something and haven't had the problems others mentioned. The free and
open source Espeak TTS engine works fine on Windows 7 too. Finally, I
have the Acapela Heather and Lucy voices version 2.2, and they work ok
as well. So I don't think there is a lot of room to worry about high
quality voices for Windows 7 as long as they are Sapi 5.x compatible

2010-01-22 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Shaun,
Well, there is system security to keep in mind. Knock on wood I have not
gotten one virus on my Windows Vista or Windows 7 based systems yet.
However, I've had several virus problems with Windows XP. In fact, the
family computer, running XP, was taken out by a nasty virus a couple of
weeks ago, but the rest of the systems on the network running Linux and
Windows 7 were uneffected. This isn't to say Windows 7 isn't invonerable
to virus attacks, but one reason the virus didn't spread any further is
that User Account Control prompted me to run program x, and when I
realised it was the virus I told it not to run it, and that stopped the
virus cold. So even though some people find UAC a pain to use it is one
more extra layer of security from these kinds of attacks.

Hi Brandon, Thomas and all,

So if I buy a computer running Windows 7 with MS TTS 5.3 Anna, would I be able to
install and use all of the ATT voices that now work great on my Windows XP
machines?

And would I not be able to install the sapi 5.1 SDK so as to be able to
continue to create games in VB6 and sapi5?

Thanks.

Re: [Audyssey] kitchinsinc speech fix virused?

2010-01-20 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Jim,
Well, as far as the ATT voices goes it depends on what version of the
voices you have. I've got all the Sapi 5.x compatible versions of those
voices, and they work fine on Windows 7. The older versions released for
Sapi 4.x didn't work for me. So this is a version issue which might or
might not apply to you.
As for the Sapi 5.1 SDK that is strictly for Windows XP and earlier. For
Windows Vista and Windows 7 the Sapi 5.3 SDK is now a part of the
Windows Platform SDK instead of a stand alone product. It is still
possible to write Visual Basic 6 applications using Sapi 5.3 because it
is still a standard Windows com library, but if you are looking for
Visual Basic 6 documentation on Sapi 5.3 documentation you are out of
luck. Visual Basic 6 is considered a dead language as far as
professional developers are concerned so getting up to date
documentation etc is going to become harder and harder to come by.
Anyway, if you absolutely need the docs save your 5.1 docs, and don't
worry about installing a SDK for Vista/Windows 7 as it is only for C++
developers these days.

2010-01-20 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi,
I don't know of any way to safely and successfully install Microsoft
Mike, Mary, and Sam on Windows 7 as the don't seam to be 5.3 compatible.
I'm not even sure why anyone in their right mind would want too in the
first place. Anna sounds much better than the older voices, and all of
the earlier voices Sam, Mary, and Mike suck in my opinion.
At any rate Jim still can create Sapi applications in VB 6 because 5.3
is a com library, and isn't that much different than 5.1 to support. In
fact, all of his games work with Windows 7 so he has all of the
necessary code in place already. The only thing he is missing is some of
the more advanced speech settings and Sapi 5.3 specific features etc.
Which he wouldn't want to use if continuing to support Sapi 5.1 on XP.
He would, however, have to continue to use the older Sapi 5 docs as
there aren't 5.3 docs for VB 6 I know of.

Hi Charles,

I am very sad to hear that the sapi voices are not working for you with my
games. I know that more and more programs like Jaws are shipping with sapi
voices that only work with that program. I bet because they are much cheaper
to license and distribute that way.

I could put the sapi5 speech developers kit up on Send Space for you. I think
that it contains the Microsoft sapi5 text to speech engine and might get your
voices working again. Below I am putting all of the sapi5 fixes that I know
of. I really would recommend the first one first.

The first thing that I would try would be the DelUserLex.exe file that you can
find on my free windows sapi5 text to speech games page, as well as on the GW
Micro and Freedom Scientific sites. It is a strange file in that it doesn't
say or seem to do anything, but it did fix my sapi5 voices.

Here is another fix that I was told about.
Go to c:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Speech
Then, press enter on Sapisvr.exe. It won't say anything, but it should
correct the control panel entries for Sapi.

Another thing that you can do is to use the Windows XP restore feature to
restore your computer back to a date when the voices were working.

And then there is to use your Windows XP cd to repair the entire sapi5 text to
speech engine.

you can download (SpeechSDK51MSM.exe).

Hi,
I would also like to add if you are running Windows Vista or Windows 7
don't install the Sapi 5.1 runtime or SDK as that will make the problem
worse. Vista and above use Sapi 5.3, and installing an older version of
Sapi isn't exactly the smartest thing a person can do. I tried it once,
trying to get the older speech voices, and blew Sapi 5.3 up completely.
It required a rather lengthy and painful process to get 5.3 back up and
working again.

Cheers!

I'd appreciate knowing if this is just security paranoyer, or whether Jim

Re: [Audyssey] kitchinsinc speech fix virused?

2010-01-18 Thread Charles Rivard
I have come up with the same result on my laptop. Spy Bot search and
destroy or AVG antivirus 9 gave a warning that the file contains a trojan
and does not allow the download. My problem is that Jim's games do not
speak using any SAPI voice, although OpenBook 9 speaks fine using the SAPI
voices. The voices I have been trying are the ones that came with an
earlier version of JAWS. Scan Soft Tom is my favorite choice from these.
It does work with other applications. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling
Jim's games with the same result. I also tried uninstalling the SAPI
voices, only to get a message that a later version of the voices has been
installed, so these could not be uninstalled.

This is just to check. Someone on the entombed list has been having trouble
with sapi, but when we suggested the fix file on Jim's site to reset things
it came up as unsave.

I checked myself, and Avg also said it was a trogeon.

I'd appreciate knowing if this is just security paranoyer, or whether
Jim actually has a problematic file (though I suspect it is! just
paranoyer).

Re: [Audyssey] kitchinsinc speech fix virused?

2010-01-18 Thread Kai

Greetings Dark et al.

The file probably isn't a virus. I encountered this very problem, downloaded
the same file from multiple sources and got the same virus warnings from
Avira. I did, however, take a chance on running the code (One of the
download sites was, after all, GW Micro). I've not experienced any ill
effects, and it did indeed fix my SAPI issue. I'm fairly sure that it isn't
a Trojan, based on my experiences.

I used to use avg and it did the same thing the file in guaranteed safe,
unless you don't know wehre they file is coming from, in this case you do,
then don't download it. If you do know where it's coming from you know there
is nothing to worry about, and if you do get a virus then avg will remove it
even if you told it to ignore the file in the first place. So, short answer
there is no Trojans in jims files.

that makes sense, and wouldn't be the first time I've heard of Avg (not

false positive.

Thanks for checking.

This is just to check. Someone on the entombed list has been having trouble
with sapi, but when we suggested the fix file on Jim's site to reset things
it came up as unsave.

I checked myself, and Avg also said it was a trogeon.

I'd appreciate knowing if this is just security paranoyer, or whether
Jim actually has a problematic file (though I suspect it is! just
paranoyer).

Beware the gRue!

Re: [Audyssey] kitchinsinc speech fix virused?

2010-01-18 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Dark and all,
For some reason most antivirus programs I have tried always flag
delusr.exe as a virus/trojan. However, I've downloaded and ran the file
several times without problems. So I think it is just paranoia on part
of the antivirus programs out there. As it happens I grabbed a copy off
another web site, and got the same virus warning. So there is obviously
something up with that file that trips the antivirus programs. However,
I've never experienced any problems running it.

My thoughts exactly. Dark's analogy of a human being who always sleeps with
two shotguns under the pillow or at least beside the bed and eight locks on
the door describes it quite nicely. It also reminds me of Vista.

Lol, I have to agree there. Also, in regards to the SAPI voices, I really
wish you could still get those from Freedomscientific on disc. Fortunately,
I still have a copy of JAWS 9, and that helps, considering I absolutely
refuse to use MS Sam, and would only use MS Mike and Mary if I really,
really, really, really, really had to.
