Re: [Audyssey] Accessible Game Devices

2008-11-08 Thread Thomas Ward

Hi Jason,
Yeah, all of the major consoles charge huge royalties in order to create
games for their platforms. While the technology exists to make say XBox
360 games you still need to pay royalties and major licensing fees to do
so. I once checked into making games for the PS 3, and even though the
new Playstation core is Linux Sony has so heavily modified it that it
doesn't use many of the open source technologies that I have come to
know in developing software for my Linux desktop here at home. It
requires a specific development kit and it costs thousands of bucks to
get the rights to use their sdk.
If that wasn't enough to mmmake it unlikely the fact is the games have
to be reviewed and approved by Sony, Microsoft, etc brfore you can even
sell it. Bottom line it is not for the small time developers. It is for
major corperations with millions of bucks behind them.

Yeah there would be no demand I have no plans to buy an xbox, I know my friend

You could just write something for xbox for yourself and not publish it though
if all you want to say is you have done it.
I am playing entombed now which is written in the xna framework so its possible
to create a quite responsive and accessible program.

Like stated before. It's not an issue of handling it. Both consoles can
handle most anything you throw at them. It's all about supply and demand.
Noone wants text to speech, and since the major demographic are sighted
people. Well there ya go.
Find a way to convince the sighted population that text to speech is an
asset, and maybe you'll see change.
I have a feeling that this will happen around the time the cubs win the
world series.

Re: [Audyssey] Accessible Game Devices

2008-11-02 Thread Thomas Ward

Hi Marvin,
That is a good question. Technically the operating systems that are used
in those game consoles are fundamentally able to run a screen reading
device. However, since the version of Linux used in the PS3 and the
version of Windows that powers the XBox are extremely stripped down and
are so customized to the point no existing screen reader for Linux or
Windows will currently run on those proprietary versions of the consoles
operating systems.
While I think it is technically possible for Microsoft and Sony to add
screen readers to the consoles they produce they never will.
First, there is not enough demand for it. A few hundred or thousand
blind customers doesn't mean much when they sell to millions of sighted
people each year.
Second, a screen reader wouldn't work anyway. This is going to get a bit
technical, but there is a total difference in the way a standard Windows
application like notepad, Internet Explorer, Word, whatever displays
text and the way a vidio game displays text. In vidio games often times
the text is graphically drawn to the screen and is an image of text and
not text like in applications. That is why if you go out and buy a PC
game like Tomb Raider Anniversary Jaws, Window Eyes, and NVDA just say
blank, blank, blank, or graphic, graphic, graphic even though you are in
a game launcher dialog. That is because what is displayed isn't text but
graphics saying launch game, load game, exit game, configure settings, etc.
The only way to solve that issue is to rout the text directly through to
the screen reader through its API such as the Jaws and Window Eyes API,
or to inbed something like Sapi into the game which will announce what
graphical text has focus.
So bottom line what we need is not a screen reader per say, but a TTS
engine that all games for those consoles would include into their games.
I know of some engines like Cepstral that could be ported easily to
those consoles, but lack of demand and licensing costs makes it pretty
much unlikely.

Hi Liam,
Truer words have never been spoken. I have heard a lot about the Linux
Geeks that were putting Linux on there game consoles like the XBox, but
it ended up just being totally pointless in the end. After they did that
the only games there could run were the games made specially for Linux
such as the open source version of Quake, Pengwuine Command, Ice
Breaker, Asteroids, KDE Packman, whatever. It was really a useless piece
of hardware after that.
Putting XP on your PS3 really amounts to the same thing. Big whoop. You
got XP on a Play Station. Now, go play your PC games on a console
instead of on a PC.

No offense, but running xp on a ps3 is pointless. It's not gonna play any

It was like people running linux on the old X Box. It looked cool, but was

If I remember correctly you could install linux on a Xbox and still switch

Hi Marvin. I'm not familiar with how the x box's OS is set up, but I think
that would be possible. However, I wouldn't hold your breath. The market
of gamers who are blind who own consoles is too small for any company to

Hi.
was wondering, as i had sight when i was younger, and played the arcade
style and the console based games, like Galaxian on the atari, mario
brothers, 1942, asteroids on the seiger, nintendo , etc.
so was wondering, would it be possible to have a external or internal text
to speech screen reader on these consoles like the x box, play station 3,
psp, nintendo wii, ds, etc.
what do you think about this?
cheers Marvin.

Thus why I'm pushign for small changes. Like. For isntance. In the
current version of x box live there are various sounds for various events.
Also. The menus wrap, but if you hold down the left or right trigger button
you can jump to the top or the bottom of a menu.
Now with the new experience coming out on the 19th, I'm not sure how this
will effect it. But.. Hopefully the menu system will be even easier to use.

Here's hoping
