Hi, Sorry to say, no sounds. This really isn't the kind of game they'd be meaningful. It's not even soldiers on a map, like Time of Conflict. You're spending the majority of your time giving orders and looking at charts and such. Nope, this game is single player only. YOu could, technically, run multiple empires on one computer with different people playing each one, but it really wasn't designed for that sort of thing and is much more a solo experience. The AI is continually being improved and updated by Steve, the developer. Best, Zack. Hi, THe game is just about as accessible as it ever was. There's still a large learning curve, which requires dedication and time to climb. Otherwise, the Jaws cursor or equivalent is still needed, but all elements of the UI are readable with it. An entire game can be played, it just takes effort on the player's part. The initial version was 5.40, which had some issues which have since been corrected in two further patches, 5.41 and 5.42. With this new release, the game works now on screens with a minimum resolution of 1280 by 800, which is my laptop's native resolution. There's no need to artificially fiddle with the display settings anymore. As with all Aurora releases, the game can be found at the official forum, http://aurora2.pentarch.org. Re: [Audyssey] Aurora 5.20: New Blog Post and Community Game
hmmm depends on the advantage, I'd vote to make a race for mars if you want to do that, however if you want to do the other in the future you could have issues with that. At 08:25 a.m. 23/08/2010, you wrote: Hi all, I've just posted at http://aurorablind.blogspot.com. This is my first "State of the Empire" post, in which I'll describe how things are going on an anual basis. While I was writing it, I had a thought. Since this is a game intended to bennefit the Audyssey gaming community and introduce them to something new, it stands to reason the community should participate. So I'll have the community act as an imperial council of sorts. I'll call for votes on major policy decisions and act as you dictate. I can't call for a vote on everything, but rest assured anything game-changing will be up to you. So my first vote concerns Mars. Read the blog post for the details, but essentially I have two options for how to proceed and would appreciate your input on which I should choose. If this goes well, I've thought of several more issues worthy of a vote but thought I'd keep this first one simple. So please help, people. Even if you've no interest in actually playing the game your input will be considered. We're telling this story together and should all have the chance to take it the direction we want. Vote either here on list or in the comments for my latest post. I'll keep a tally of responses and go with a majority ruling. If none is forthcoming I'll vote to break a tie, but won't otherwise interveen. The deadline for this pole is Tuesday, August 24, at noon pacific time, or 03:00 PM eastern, 08:00 PM GMT. Hi, Yep, it is. No sounds to speak of, I'm afraid. It was originally designed for sighted people and is only accidentally playable by us at all. Best, Zack. I installed the 4.91 with no hiccups. I extracted the files from the 5.1 and 5.14 patch updates. The 5.1 included the executable and the database. The 5.14 included the executable only. I copied the two files from the 5.1 update into the Aurora directory under program files, then copied the 5.14 update of the executable into that same directory. Re: [Audyssey] Aurora patching?
Hi Chris and all interested, Yep. Just copy those files. Do it in order to be safe: 4.91 to 5.10 to 5.14. I think 5.10 replaces the database while 5.14 doesn't. Remember though that the first time you run 5.14 an error will pop up. That's to be expected, and you'll just want to select the Space Race campaign for simplicity and run the database update from the game menu. After that, you can restart the game and create your own. I'll be glad to help with any other questions. Just remember that this game has a ridiculous amount of depth, and a learning curve which is sometimes compared to a cliff. There is a lot of internal consistency though if you work at it. Best, Zack. On Thu, 8 Jul 2010, Christopher Bartlett wrote: Hi Zach. You certainly have my attention. I love the idea of a sprawling single-player strategy game, as I often have to snatch game play time in odd moments when others wouldn't necessarily be available. Re: [Audyssey] Aurora: An Accessible space strategy game
We are also currently trying to decide upon what access changes might need making to the game, so some in put from people would be helpful, particularly recognizing the fact that this game is ridiculously in depth and takes a lot of getting into even before you start considdering acess points. however, as Zack said, the developer is very keen on access, and has already added a coordinates system on the main map overview to make life easier, so hopefully with some patience we can have a fully featured, detailed, single player stratogy game accessible. Beware the grue! Dark. - Original Message - From: "Zachary Kline" To: Sent: Tuesday, July 06, 2010 11:04 PM Subject: [Audyssey] Aurora: An Accessible space strategy game Hi All, I can't claim credit for this game, sadly. That belongs to Nial, who found mention of it on an internet forum and posted about it on audiogames.net. Some people who frequent that forum might already know what I'm talking about, in which case feel free to skip this message. Aurora is a space strategy game in the style of games like Master of Orion, Galactic Civilizations II, etc. The only reason it is accessible for blind people at all is that it is written in Visual Basic 6, and has a deliberate emphasis on gameplay over graphics. I need to put in a caveat here. The game is not as accessible as it could be currently, nor are all screens very speech-friendly. Nevertheless, it is possible to play quite a large percentage of the game as it currently stands. The developer seems to be quite willing to make changes to bennefit accessibility, much like the developer of Smugglers was. The barrier to entry is a bit higher for this game than for typical audio games. There is a large amount of detail here, without a centralized manual. The Aurora forums are a friendly place, and there is a lot of relevant information for somebody who wants to dig. They can be found at http://aurora.pentarch.org Speaking of the forums, you'll need to visit them in order to get the game. The current version is 5.14, but you need to get and apply a couple patches to reach it. I believe the progression is 4.91, 5.10, 5.14. For those who have applied Smugglers patches, the process is identical. I highly recommend anybody with a serious interest in strategy games give this one a look. It compares very favorably to commercial titles for sighted people, and unlike almost all the current crop of accessible strategy games for the audio market, it's single player. I'm willing to answer any questions you all might have, and look forward to hearing from fellow players.
