milar to how upstream handles it. The SLOT still allows for useful
dependencies, and people installing "any icedtea" will automatically get
the newest one without having to somehow choose which of multiple
package names is right.

If there's actually reasons for these things to be very narrow, I'd like
to see easily usable meta-properties that let people easily say
something like "I've got a live CVS ebuild" without specifying 20
different PROPERTIES.

ebuilds that do so, we may be guilty of the same.

Halcy0n also mentioned that this gets really annoying when USE flags
inherited from eclasses change. You'd need to edit every metadata.xml of
all inheriting packages.
