As 4.16 is already removed from gentoo-sources I am kind of stuck with a

[gentoo-user] grub2-mkconfig vs. xen

2015-01-04 Thread Konstantinos Agouros
Hi,

I have a box running a xen-domu. If I want to use grub2-mkconfig,
I learned that I have to put the kernel-.config into /etc/kernels.
However this does not create an entry which includes the initrd
(it creates one without xen though).
How do I achieve this? Also I only want entries with xen and I need
to pass some params to xen as well as the linux kernel. Which entries
in /etc/default/grub do that?

[gentoo-user] Openvswitch problem

2014-06-14 Thread Konstantinos Agouros
Hi,

I tried to run openvswitch 2.0.0 in a virtualbox-guest-vm.
I ran emerge --config after the installation to generate an empty database.
I start ovsdb-server all is fine.
I start ovs-vswitchd all is fine.
However as soon as I try to configure something ie add a bridge ovs-vswitchd
runs at 100% cpu and I get the following message:

ovs-vswitchd

And thousands of them. It seems the two can't communicate via the unix-domain
socket. Anybody got an idea what might be wrong (maybe in the kernel
configuration)?

[gentoo-user] openvswitch vs. openrc network scripts

2014-01-18 Thread Konstantinos Agouros
Hi,

is anybody using openvswitch together with the openrc network scripts?
The point is, that the physical network interface will be added to the
vswitch and thus not have the IP-address configured by /etc/init.d/net.X.
To make the box reachable the switch that contains the physical interface
needs to have the box's IP assigned to it. In order for this to work, the
ovs-scripts need to be started before networking starts. Is there a way
to achieve this without modifying the init-scripts since this gets
overridden with the next update.

Cheers,

most likely this is due to dom0 misconfiguration. should be something like that
(xen part):

$ grep '^CONFIG.*XEN.*' /usr/src/linux-3.2.1-gentoo-r2/_dom0/.config
CONFIG_XEN=y

running dom0 must have these modules loaded (compiled as modules in my config):

$ lsmod|grep xen
xen_netback20821 0 [permanent]
xen_blkback16116 0 [permanent]
I have them either as modules or fixed in the kernel yes.
CONFIG_XEN_BLKDEV_BACKEND=m
CONFIG_XEN_BLKDEV_BACKEND=m

and I checked that they are loaded. The real strange thing is, that I have
an identical .config (regarding the xen stuff) on a 2nd box and all is
fine. So I need to debug the hotplug scripts somehow to see what is
going wrong. I tried to pass pci hardware (network intercaces) to the

/lib/rc/sh/init.sh: mount -n -t $fs $fsopts rc-svcdir $RC_SVCDIR

You can get the actual content of the $fs and $fsopts variables from the

Hmmm but where is it filled with the directory structure? Or is this like

Hi,

it is booting, I can log in. (dom0 is xen-sources-2.6.34-r4). However I do
not have a complete console (tried with xensons=tty). Last message while
starting with xm create -c is:
[0.284193] uname used greatest stack depth: 5856 bytes left
[6.801094] init-early.sh used greatest stack depth: 4000 bytes left

If I use xen-sources for the domU kernel as well all is fine. I used the
kernel-config of the xen-sources-domU kernel to do a make menuconfig in
the gentoo-sources-kernel. Anybody has this working?

[gentoo-user] Question about network setup

2011-01-21 Thread Konstantinos Agouros
Hi,

I have a Xen host that uses quite a few bridges, that I would
like to set up via /etc/conf.d/net.

The bridges that are set up to contain a physical interface are easy
as I use bridge_add_ethX for that. However some of the domUs shall
comminicate internally so I have to set up bridges in the dom0 without
any configuration they must just exist when at least on of the guests start.
Would the 'right' way be something like:

config_xenbr6=(null) in conf.d/net and then add a link net.xenbr6 that I then
have to add to runlevels/default as well?

OK more googling gave me the answer:

ethtool -K tx off

Now the question is:
what is the 'gentooest' way to put this into /etc/conf.d/net?
From reading the example file I would guess a preup() function.

Also: is /etc/conf.d/net the place to put in the bridge definitions for
the xen guests? If yes, how do I get it to create empty bridges for inter-
guest communications?

Hi,

I am considering a bit of virtualization and started playing with XEN.
I have three questions:
I use a 64bit system with probably mostly 64bit guests. Am I right
that I do not need the -mno-tls-direct-seg-refs CFLAG and can clone
real machines? My test system didn't show any performance hangs.

Are paravirtualized guests faster in performance then fully virtualized
ones? I guess the addition of a whole 'PC Emulation' might have a negative
impact.

What is the fastest driver for the guest disks apart from direct physical
partitions on the dom0? I saw that xen loads a few drivers.

Hi,

if you are not afraid of the command line I would recommend KVM. I use
it for my virtualization needs. When you don't want the sdl window you
may use the -vnc switch. -daemonize switch is great for running in the
backgroud. the -balloon switch is great for memory savings, I
recommend KSM in your kernel also.

Nope didn't have the time. I needed to get the DB running again quick by:

NO. It was not an upstream change. Upstream changed to integer

I had some weirdness with .30 and reiser. I was using .30 sucessfully for a
few days, then had to hard reset but reiser had problems mounting on
reboot. I tried booting .30 twice with no luck. Booted .29 and it worked

I have no issues whatsoever on this amd64 notebook with 2.6.30 and reiser.
It's now on 2.6.31 and still working fine. My ancient x86 file server is still
on 2.6.29, mostly as I'd read the same report you did.

The problematic combination reported then was x86, reiser, 2.6.30, IDE chipset
AMD64, reiser, sata (3ware)... strange

I'm currently using ReiserFS (along with 2.6.30-r6 but I've also used
2.6.30-r4) for my boot partition and I'm able to write in it, without
any kind of problem.
Could it be a mountpoint problem?
Do I need to change anything in the options when mounting? I fell back

Look at my example rules again: Each interface is identified by its MAC add=

Well I do not get to that since the modules are loaded in the wrong order.

It does if you build one into the kernel. But this is a kludge, depending

Hi,

I have a box that serves as a firewall and thus has different NICs.
However when booting I run into a problem:

One of the NICs needs the de4x5 driver another the tulip one. Udev
loads tulip first, which then tries to claim the card the needs de4x5
but this does not work. So I have to manually set things straight after-
wards. Is there a way to force it to first load de4x5 and then tulip?
/etc/modules.autoload.d seems to be used too late.

[gentoo-user] VNC question

2009-04-10 Thread Konstantinos Agouros
Hi,

I try to use vncviewer to access a OSX box with 10.5.6 and 'screen sharing'
enabled. I have no problems with another mac that has another vnc server
running but I thought, let's try the one, that comes with the OS.

If I connect using vncviewer I get:

VNC Viewer Free Edition 4.1.3 for X - built Apr 9 2009 21:56:01
Copyright (C) 2002-2008 RealVNC Ltd.
See http://www.realvnc.com for information on VNC.

CConn: Using pixel format depth 6 (8bpp) rgb222

And it returns. Are there any extensions in Apple's solution that cause
this or is it maybe a problem with color depth on the x-server that
I am running the client on (already o Xorg 1.5).

Any clues are welcome.

Did you install all the compat packages it requires? I would use this

Well I needed a libstdc++.so.5 for this I have libstdc++-v3-3.3.6
I have a gcc-3.4.6 which should be good enough for the 3.4.3 requirement
from the page You mentioned. What else might be missing? Libc to new?

[gentoo-user] migrate from 32 to 64bit...

2008-09-04 Thread Konstantinos Agouros
Hi,

the mainboard on my main workbox needs a replacement (currently still an
athlon-xp based system). So I will go amd64 with that machine. Booting
a 64bit kernel on all the 32bit binaries works fine. What gives me a bit
of a headache is how to switch?

Thought a: create a directory /64 install everything there and then switch
lib, bin /usr

Thought b: create tbz2 of all the packages and then in one run replace
the 32 packages using emerge but i might run into library problems.

Anybody has a good and efficient idea, how to do this?

I believe you've forgotten to build support for NAT in your kernel:
Nope that's not it

grep IP_NF_IPTABLES .config

CONFIG_IP_NF_IPTABLES=m

And it's not that I can't insert anything in the chain. It's --dport
that gets me the error message. I played around and started with inserting
a blank rule.

[gentoo-user] problem with gentoo-sources on sparc32-platform

2007-09-02 Thread Konstantinos Agouros
Hi,

I built a 2.6.22-r5 kernel on a sparc32-platform. However elftoaout
refuses to convert this with the message 'wrong elf version'.

File on the kernel gives me:

vmlinux: ELF 32-bit MSB relocatable, SPARC, version 1 (SYSV), not stripped

So I guess elftoaout is right since the kernel is not statically linked.
My question, what do I have to change in the kernel-config to get
a statically linked vmlinux like on every other machine I have?

What is listed under /etc/selinux/targeted/contexts/files/ ?
/etc/selinux is empty.

When I started with hardened sources this was all put to /etc/security/selinux
so it seems I need some kind of migration script or is a simple
softlink good enough?

If the file is there then can you check that you are not emerging this whil=
e=20
using FEATURES=3Duserpriv in your make.conf.

If the above does not help, you could ask for more informed advice in the i=
rc=20
channel for gentoo kernel devs.

[gentoo-user] SELinux change from 2005.1 to 2006.1 policy update fails

2007-06-17 Thread Konstantinos Agouros
Hi,

I tried upgrading from the 2005.1 to the 2006.1 profile. Updating
selinux-base-policy-20070329 fails with the following message:

 Setting SELinux security labels
/etc/selinux/targeted/contexts/files/file_contexts: No such file or directory

!!! ERROR: sec-policy/selinux-base-policy-20070329 failed.
Call stack:
  misc-functions.sh, line 570: Called preinst_selinux_labels
  misc-functions.sh, line 492: Called die

!!! Failed to set SELinux security labels.
!!! If you need support, post the topmost build error, and the call stack if
relevant.

Is there some manual stuff I need to do before this upgrade works?

/etc/make.profile points to /usr/portage/profiles/selinux/x86/2006.1

Regards,

Konstantin

Hi,

after I recently upgraded to 21.4-r2 the graphical pulldown menus vanished
for textmenus and with jde ctrl-c-v-c for compiling is no longer working.
Is there some new USE-flag for emacs one should know about?

[gentoo-user] Unionfs for 2.6.20

2007-05-31 Thread Konstantinos Agouros
Hi,

will there be a unionfs for 2.6.20 kernels? AFAIK there's only the 1.5_pre
for 2.6.19.

[gentoo-user] gnucash-2.0.5 still with postgres?

2007-03-28 Thread Konstantinos Agouros
Hi,

a while ago I tried the first update to gnucash 2 and this failed miserably
with postgres as backend. I am currently using a selfcompiled version of
1.8 but maintain the ebuild version. Before I jeopardize the data, has
anybody tried 2.0.5 with postgres as backend?

[gentoo-user] hardened-sources-2.6.18 booting very slow and no network connection

2007-03-25 Thread Konstantinos Agouros
Hi,

I have an instance of hardened sources using selinux as a webserver.
2.6.16 is running fine however 2.6.18-r6 boots up, but it's terribly slow
and won't allow any network connection. I compiled the new kernel with
the old .config using make oldconfig and there weren't many new sec-
config options I saw. Has anything changed dramatically in the behaviour
between these two releases?

Regards,

Konstantin

I have a firewall setup where I do need policy routing since I have two
default routers (one for mail and one for websurfing). I could put the ip
rules commands in local.start but I guess the right place would be
conf.d/net. So what's the 'official' way of doing this?

Look at the example postup() function in /etc/conf.d/net.example.
Thanks! This was what I was looking for!
