You want to use View -> New View. You'll then have a second image where you can
stay in 1:1 scale and remove marching ants, layer boundaries, and so on (
And, above all, you can save your current tool/colors/brush/... setup for all
devices, so that next time you'll use The GIMP, these will be the defaults!

http://www.1001freefonts.com/ is one of the places to find freeware/shareware
fonts. Most of them don't come with any licence/readme/whatever.
