FWIW I just explicitly added to the list of blocked messages a few
recurrent subjects that we've seen over the last weeks. I checked,
and the anti-spam + filtering rules combined stopped 35000 spams here
on the last year, thus almost 100/day. This motivates me to regularly
refine the rules to always improve filtering while carefully aiming at
zero false positive.

Yes, that is what I have too. I guess we simply don't have the same
standards - to me one spam a day is 'high'.

Are you getting more from the list ? Am I the only one getting so few ?
Even checking the local archives here didn't reveal anything exceptional.

Ah indeed, I missed this point. Thus it could be another bug, but it
looked so similar to the one I recently addressed that it appeared
almost obvious to me it was the same :-/

We do have nightly snapshots but we don't provide builds anymore. I
stopped doing that around 1.5 when deployments started to diverge due
to the various libraries found in field with different distros. Now
we rely on distros to ship an up-to-date well-known version and we
provide sources for those who want to tune anything for their use
case. I'm not much interested in having to go back to the extra
entropy in bug reports caused by random build combinations, nor
having to arbitrate what option should be enabled in the default
build even if that forces someone else to install extra packages
that they don't need.

But I wonder why the build-up of connections is between our haproxy-no-tls
and haproxy-tls and not the "real" backends. The communication between
haproxy-no-tls and haproxy-tls is "mode tcp" and "http-reuse never" and
since it's mode tcp, it shouldn't really use the http-reuse?
Both haproxy-no-tls and haproxy-tls uses our backends. So wouldn't I see
this problem between the haproxy-no-tls and our backends as well if I was
affected?
I believe I could use "pool-max-conn 0" between haproxy-no-tls and
haproxy-tls since it's "mode tcp" and I don't want to reuse connections as
it breaks the "option forwardfor", sounds logical?

I've never actually compiled haproxy before, I just install Vincent Bernats
PPA packages.
I guess I could take his packages and try to build my own deb with the
latest snapshot.

So a bit off-topic, a pipeline that does nightly builds would make it
easier to test changes and bugfixes.
If anyone on this list have the time and competence, I could provide the
hardware and probably bandwidth (well depending on nr downloads).

Given the connection rate, I suspect it could be related to the excess
of idle conns kept on the backend side. I faced the exact same problem
recently during a test with ulimit -n 100k. The CPU usage was 100% on
a single core at 700 conn/s! Strace showed nothing abnormal, until I
figured that connect() would take 1.4 millisecond, confirmed by perf()
showing that the system was trying hard to find a spare source port. I
addressed it with the commit below that was backported to latest 2.0:

  4cae3bf631 ("BUG/MEDIUM: connection: don't keep more idle connections than 
ever needed")

Elias, one work-around for the issue is to add "pool-max-conn 0" on your
server lines, or "http-reuse never", or "http-reuse always", depending
on whether the next stage supports keep-alive well.

And to second what Lukas said, please give the latest snapshot a try, it
would save you from having to adjust your configuration.

It's a bug. There are lots of fixes in the 2.0 tree after 2.0.5. You
could either wait for 2.0.6, or try the current stable git tree (2.0
git [1] or the snapshot from last night [2]).

Beginning to troubleshoot 2.0.5 at this point does not make a lot of
sense inmho considering the amount and importance of the fixes
committed after 2.0.5.

Hi!

I have an issue which I've don't know how to go ahead with.
So first I will describe my setup.
We have a pair of haproxy v2.0.5 that only takes HTTP traffic and relays
HTTPS traffic down to a pair of haproxys v1.7.11 doing SSL termination.
Here is a more "graphical" layout:
Internet =HTTP+HTTPS=> haproxy (v2.0.5, no-TLS)
haproxy (v2.0.5, no-TLS) =HTTP=> backend applications
haproxy (v2.0.5, no-TLS) =TCP/HTTPS=> haproxy (v1.7.11, TLS)
haproxy (v1.7.11, TLS) =HTTP=> backend applications

So the problem here is that this setup breaks when we try to upgrade the
haproxy (v1.7.11, TLS) to v2.0.5.
What happens is that it simply masses up established connections(`ss -s`)
until the internet facing haproxy runs out of resources and uses all cores
is 100% utilizied, gets too many orphaned connections and OOM killer starts
killing pids. So in terms of hardware usage this is going from ~60% CPU
utilization to 100% on 18 cores(HT turned off), 2 GB RAM usage to 32GB+swap.

So we do zero config changes, upgrade haproxy to 2.0.x + restart haproxy
and like a minute or so then it runs out of resources.
Each haproxy (v2.0.5, no-TLS) have an request rate of 55-90K/s.
Each haproxy (v1.7.11, TLS) have an request rate of 15-20/s.
Each haproxy (v2.0.5, no-TLS) have a connection rate of 7-12K/s.
Each haproxy (v1.7.11, TLS) has a connection rate of 6-7K/s.

I have no clue why a zero config change upgrade would break this setup.
Anyone that can help me go forward with troubleshooting this or explain
what might cause it to mass up established connections?

Ah thank you for reporting this. I suspect that it's relate to the use
of -M. I'll search more info regarding this. I'm not much worried for
now but I'd rather ensure that contents are not changed. In the worst
case I'll have to find how to disable the header output.

By the way I found why it was tagged as "unsure" instead of "spam". I
didn't specify "-M" in the script so it didn't consider the input file
was an mbox, hence it probably used to consider the headers in the
evaluation, leading to a confusing result. With "-M" it clearly states
it's a spam.

I've now updated the script to locally archive these e-mails instead
of delivering them. I'll keep an eye on the for some time and will
deliver them manually if I see some wrong blocking.

Yep exactly. If at least we get rid of all the readable ads which
require us to actually read the subjects before deleting them,
that will be a nice improvement already.

Yeah yeah some of you will say "ah at last, it's been long".

So, being in vacation till the end of the week, I could spend the day
sorting out all the spam from the ML and using them to train bogofilter,
after what I installed it.

The good point is that after a careful training using a database
dedicated to the mailing list only, I managed to adjust it to reach
zero false positive and letting just a few spam slip through. This
means it could be used to filter out the mails instead of just
tagging them.

The dataset consisted in 30700 e-mails all delivered to this list over
the last 9 years, 6600 of which are spam. The filter managed to catch
111 spams I had missed by hand and to spot 28 mails I had accidently
tagged as spam. I'll intentionally let the ones marked "unsure" pass
through, as the vast majority of them are valid e-mails ; only 53 were
real spam over the last 9 years so we don't care as long as we just get
a few tens a year.

For now it only adds the "x-bogosity" header to the e-mail and still
delivers it so that I can monitor the activity, but the purpose is to
very quickly switch to dropping those marked as spam (which are the
majority of those people complain about).

Yes that's the part I loved the most in this thread :-)

I have to go before shops close now, I must change my laptop because
it shows me more spams than what I used to have on my previous one,
so there must be a relation :-)

Do you mean you could switch to an other product because of an amount
of spam on a mailling list purposely widely opened to everyone?
While some solutions exists to fight spams?

As others have mentionned it, I use gmail, it's quite efficient for
this type of usage.

I don't use my main mail domain for mailing lists, I use a gmail
account, which has passable spam filtering

This is NOT an endorsement of gmail, just pointing out that some
people might use different email providers for different things...

That's in my point of view not a valid answer. Trueth is, there come a lot of 
spam mails along the list. 
Not every one has controll over the spam filter for his/her mail account. 
Furthor more
when every spam filter is as good as you say, nobody would send any more 
spam-mails.
 And I don't  wan't to mention false positives. So in my case I have at least 
to skim headlines
and it's a pain.

But at the end it's the decission of the owner oft this list. He made clear, he 
dont want to change a thing.
