They've obviously been spending quite some time getting this beta organised
etc.
I expect the resource they had tied up in that will now be able to be
focused on the bugs in the OrangeBox engine since most of the games are now

They wanted to get all their popular MP games working on Mac. And it would
have been idiotic to have several different multiplayer engine versions.
They would have also had to make sure that those versions work on all
platforms.
Easier to just have one for all their crossplatform MP games (LFD1/2
they should have the core engine (physics and engine code) and then
the separate game code so that tf2 updates don't screw with DODS thats gonna
happen and like they will add a new hat to tf2 and then everyone in CSS has
a hat for no reason

The game code is separate.
Generic functions go into the engine.dll.
Game specific functions go into the server/client.dll.
It's still better the way it is now than having CS:S and DOD:S vulnerable to
a bunch of exploits that Valve does not bother patching on the EP1 engine.

tf_wearable_item is part of the TF2 server.dll and related client checks are
part of the client.dll.
As such it is missing from the CS:S beta server/client.dll.
So adding a hat to TF2 won't add it to CS:S even though they are using the
same engine.

God the amount of bitching in this is ridiculous. Valve is updating the
game, completely free of charge and people feel like they're doing something
wrong to them. SM/MM:S breaking isn't anything those teams are very fast and
usually have a patch within hours of any updates that break them.

Please, please, please DON'T do all this copying stuff, it is a waste of
time and will cause problems for you later. Just run the hldsupdatetool
command and then run srcds -game cstrike_beta +map de_dust to run a
beta server.

The point of making an initial copy of the cstrike_beta folder, is to
avoid the steam client re-downloading all the cstrike files..
or, if the files don't exist in the ctsrike_beta folder, does the server
default to use the missing files from the cstrike/ folder?
