The reason people are angry over this is because valve employees are joining
servers not hosted by valve, but hosted by the community. These communities
pay for the servers and valve ruining the experience for everyone on the
server by having uber weapons. If valve was doing this on their own
public/private server most people would not be very angry.

I agree - however, since this has since been addressed by Robin,
what's the problem now?

We should be productive and all I've seen so far are (some hostile)
rants - if someone still has a bone to pick with Valve, state what you
expect to be done about it instead of just complaining. What's done is
done. There is no reason to keep beating a dead horse (that I'm aware

Re: [hlds] [TF2] Valve using their special weapons

2009-09-09 Thread George Devgru Seal
The problem with your analogy is that MMOs generally have an attainable goal
you can actually work towards and a sense of achievement or satisfaction
once you finally get that rare item that no one else has. That's rewarding.

Not so with TF2. What sense of achievement or satisfaction do you get from
RANDOMLY gaining a hat?

You might even get a hat you think looks stupid, or one for a class that you
absolutely despise playing, which is an even bigger kick to the manhood than
not getting a hat at all! You just expended your hat luck for the next
random amount of time.

As for the lottery, in most cases you are helping to fund something, i.e an
education lottery, and that's rewarding in its own sense for a lot of
people.

You have to actually DO something, in these cases, to gain the rights to
feel superior.

Therefore I inquire, how are you superior because you played the game the
same way as everyone else, but you just got lucky and rolled hat on the
dice?

2009-09-09 Thread Mike Zimmermann

the same way as everyone else, but you just got lucky and rolled hat
on the dice?

You aren't. No one is any better than any other person because they
got an item. However, they sure feel like it when they see that
message pop up on the server. It's a good feeling, a sense of
accomplishment, even if you didn't really accomplish anything (other
than getting lucky). Also, I don't know what type of lotteries you
have, but here they are nearly all for profit and are completely black
and white win/lose.

In sense of MMOs, getting items in TF2 is *a lot* like most things in
MMOs. Have you ever even played World of Warcraft or other popular
MMOs? A lot of the super rare items are gained only by being
incredibly lucky with no required skill at all. The only skill needed
is to log on daily and do easy, available to everyone activities
(sounds really familiar to TF2's system, hmmm).

Finally, I have no idea where you are taking this. Is it your hobby to
disagree with people or something?

Valve automatically gets a limited slot on my server (they are invulnerable to
the high priority slot kicker). So if they get on, they won't get kicked off.

Valve employees have spent, all together about 40 hours or so on my servers
since the release of TF2.

One poor soul connected to my Dodgeball server and didn't stick around long,
about 2 minutes. WTF ROCKETS RAINING DOWN FROM THE SKY?

One employee connected with the name VACMinistrator.

I lolled.

Exactly, msleeper! Much how I feel about this. People whine too much and
take this game too seriously. Consider it an honor to have a Valve player
join your server. It's not like they would have stayed for hours with their
overpowered weapon or dropped by your server every day. Try accepting a bit
of a mix up here and there.

[hlds] [TF2] Valve using their special weapons

2009-09-08 Thread Alec Sanger

Anyone ever run into a Valve employee using one of their special weapons? We
were getting complaints of a 100% crit hacker last night. I guess the players
started giving them shit so they left. Upon further inspection, it was a Valve
employee using a special Syringe gun

http://www.tf2items.com/profiles/76561197999842654

Valve Syringe Gun
(equipped)
+15% Damage Done
+150% Clip Size
+15% Firing Speed
On Hit: +15 Health
100% Critical Hit vs Burning Players
+50 Max Health on Wearer
On Kill: 5 Seconds of 100% Critical Chance
On Hit: 30% Chance to Slow Target
Fire Retardant (1)
Dmg Taken From Fire Reduced (0.85)
Speed Boost When Active (1.15)

Just wondering if anyone's ever had issues with a valve employee coming in and
dominating with one of their special weapons. I mean, shit, I might as well
just ban the Valve group if this is going to happen.

Thank you,
Alec Sanger

are banning people for not getting items by playing (ie: the idler) and

If I saw someone using these Special items on our server then I would

Hi All.
Our original usage of these was a couple of weeks ago, and lasted a
  day.
It was mostly around testing the item system (they contain every
  positive
attribute in the system). After that, we converted all the Valve
  weapons
to be purely cosmetic. Unfortunately, unknown to us on the dev side,
  some of
the non-TF2-team folks at Valve didn't get the memo, and gave themselves
  the
   broken items recently.

We're removing these from everyone today, and removing the ability for
folks to give these kinds of weapons to themselves in the future.
  Shouldn't
happen again. (And if it somehow does, feel free to drop me an email at
   ro...@valvesoftware.com and let me know)

Re: [hlds] [TF2] Valve using their special weapons

2009-09-08 Thread Phillip Vector
*sigh* Last I heard, Robin was part of the TF2 Team.

This is quite ironic, almost every VALVe employee has the special VALVe guns
(100% Crit, 15% speed, health, etc.) however they shitlist 5% of the
community for running an external idler.

No. Not almost EVERY VALVE EMPLOYEE will have it in the future. Yes,
the TF2 guys have them and until now, every employee pretty much had
them. But Robin said he would remove them from people who aren't
supposto have them (Non-TF2 Team Members).

Now, if you want to complain that the TF2 people have these weapons
and are coming into pub servers and causing them to empty in the
future, I will listen. Otherwise, you may want to restate your
position.

Re: [hlds] [TF2] Valve using their special weapons

2009-09-08 Thread Kyle Sanderson
This is quite ironic, almost every VALVe employee has the special VALVe guns
(100% Crit, 15% speed, health, etc.) however they shitlist 5% of the
community for running an external idler.

Sounds like quite the plan I would like to see what you guys come up with
next,
Kyle.

  Hi All.
Our original usage of these was a couple of weeks ago, and lasted a day.
It was mostly around testing the item system (they contain every positive
attribute in the system). After that, we converted all the Valve weapons
to be purely cosmetic. Unfortunately, unknown to us on the dev side, some of
the non-TF2-team folks at Valve didn't get the memo, and gave themselves the
 broken items recently.

We're removing these from everyone today, and removing the ability for
folks to give these kinds of weapons to themselves in the future. Shouldn't

Says the guy who wrote the Sourcemod plugin to ban achievement farmers and
even setup servers to ban people in when they received one achievement. I
assume you did that because you absolutely agree'd with people getting
achievements legitimately? Nothing serious going on there now Msleeper...
How is this any different? I have no issue with employee's receiving Hats,
although everyone in achievement_idle maps right now, and the over 100,000
people who were idling for hats/dupe unlocks using that external idler may.
Current people in achievement_idle servers:

you can use the steam browser to find the ones that were not submitted
to game-monitor.com.

Hi All.
Our original usage of these was a couple of weeks ago, and
   lasted
a
  day.
It was mostly around testing the item system (they contain
 every
  positive
attribute in the system). After that, we converted all the
 Valve
  weapons
to be purely cosmetic. Unfortunately, unknown to us on the dev
   side,
  some of
the non-TF2-team folks at Valve didn't get the memo, and gave
themselves
  the
   broken items recently.

We're removing these from everyone today, and removing the
   ability
for
folks to give these kinds of weapons to themselves in the
 future.
  Shouldn't
happen again. (And if it somehow does, feel free to drop me an
   email
at
   ro...@valvesoftware.com and let me know)

Robin.

We as customers bought the game, as the person who made this email found out
pretty fast valve employees are running around servers using these items
that give themselves one hell of an advantage over the regular player. There
is no need to be sarcastic in here Michael, I was upset at the fact that
they all had circumvented the regular way of getting items (just playing the
game). Instead *some* not all of their employees which has been made clear
to myself in here had some uber'd version of a regular gun, and which ever
hat they wanted. To me as a paying customer that is does no sit right at all
set right in my mind. The employee's already have enough perks by being able
to beta test games and or get games for free. They should not be destroying
the game for paying customers just because they were hired (again this is no
longer true, but whatever), or by being able to circumvent the shoddy item
giving system and give themselves which ever items they please. Now tell me,

If you hate Valve so much, you can ban all the Valve Steam IDs. Or
even better, uninstall the game and delete your server.

I seriously have no idea why people are so pissed off about this.
It's their game, let them have their fun. Are you telling me you've
NEVER abused your powers on your server? Slapped someone for fun?
Given yourself health? No clip? Teleported a Medic closer?

Let them have their fun and get over it.

I certainly don't mind the getting the hats for free, since they give

Says the guy who wrote the Sourcemod plugin to ban achievement farmers and
even setup servers to ban people in when they received one achievement. I
assume you did that because you absolutely agree'd with people getting
achievements legitimately? Nothing serious going on there now Msleeper...
How is this any different? I have no issue with employee's receiving Hats,
although everyone in achievement_idle maps right now, and the over 100,000
people who were idling for hats/dupe unlocks using that external idler may.
 Current people in achievement_idle servers:
 http://www.game-monitor.com/search.php?search=achievement_idletype=mappublic=pg=1then
you can use the steam browser to find the ones that were not submitted
 to game-monitor.com.

 You have balls sir,
 Kyle.
