OK, I had to respond to that misconception wrt e1000 BMCs. :-)
The real reason that a separate MAC (sometimes a separate NIC) was
provided for BMC traffic on some new Intel motherboards was that there
are more features being put onto the management NIC than just port 623
can handle (HTTP,
Tim,
Writing FRU data is usually done in discrete sections which have
variable length, so it should be done with care.
The ipmiutil package does have all the tools together in a meta-command
now ('ipmiutil'), see http://ipmiutil.sf.net/ for release 1.8.0 or
greater, and any other input is
reasonable defaults for the LAN
parameters that are needed, if you run it locally.

Frank,
It doesn't appear that you were root when you tried the set commands.
Does it work if you log in as root or use sudo?
When you used the lan 2 command, it defaulted to user 1.
When you used the user 5 command, it tried to set user 5. Does the SMDC
have 5 users? Perhaps you should stick
If the server won't respond to Get Channel Authentication Capabilities
(the first IPMI LAN request, required by the IPMI spec), then either the
IPMI LAN isn't configured, or it doesn't support IPMI LAN.
You would have to check locally on the server to see if IPMI LAN is
configured or not.

Andy,
A somebody who lerks to learn. It's a shame you
The two system have entirely different IPMI BMCs on the board.
They each have their own IPMI firmware on the BMC.
Also, the FRU SDR records applied would vary by vendor.
You can see the BMC vendor product IDs from GetDeviceID ('ipmitool mc
info' or 'ipmiutil health').

That must be the ipmi0 kernel thread, which is used for the local IPMI
system interface, but is not needed for IPMI LAN access. The IPMI LAN
accesses the BMC firmware directly, not using the main CPU.

Federico,
It sounds like it is time to call HP support to find out if this Aelita
Software BMC on the HP DL 140 really supports IPMI 1.5 LAN, or just some
non-standard subset of that.
If it does, then HP must know what the configuration tricks are to set
it up.

In general, one way to get the BMC back to default behavior is to remove
the power plug for about 10 seconds. It is a brute-force way of doing
BMC reset, plus, unlike a BMC reset command, it doesn't get the BMC out
of sync with the BIOS.

The SOL for IPMI 1.5 is a different (OEM) protocol, whereas SOL for IPMI
2.0 is in the spec.
Intel supplies a CLI rpm to support SOL with the S*WV2 platforms (dpccli
console command).
I didn't think that ipmitool supported IPMI 1.5 OEM SOL.

Check dmidecode to see if it puts out a type 38 (IPMI) record.
If so, the Base Address should be listed there.

John,
Check the IPMI version by running ipmitool mc info.
If it is IPMI 2.0, proceed.
If it is IPMI 1.5, then SOL is not supported on that blade.

Three things to check:
Is the IPMI LAN channel enabled?
Is the admin user enabled for the LAN channel?
Is the BMC IPMI 1.5 or IPMI 2.0?

ipmitool channel info N

will have Medium Type = 802.3 LAN.
