[JAWS-Users] Excel cells now reading differently

2018-06-28 Thread George Martinez Sr
Hello all,
I am using JAWS 2018 and Office 365 in Windows 10 1803.
I have just noticed the last week or 2 a very annoying event in Excel.
I have a Description in a cell as follows, "June 27 payroll draw"
When I go to that cell and press F2 and begin to arrow right each time I
arrow right JAWS reads me "June 27 payroll draw" instead of "J" then "U"
etc.
This is more than annoying because if I did not have a little residual sight
I would have no way of knowing where the cursor is to delete the 7 and
replace with 8.
Is anyone else finding this in Excel recently?
I feel like the little white ball bouncing between Microsoft and VFO's
paddles of "improvement."

Re: [JAWS-Users] Reading Attachments

2018-06-21 Thread George Martinez Sr
I am using Windows 10 and Office 365.
When I receive attachments in an email I open the email then SHIFT + TAB
once to move me up to the first attachment on the left.
Then you can either press ENTER to open the attachment or use your
Applications key to do the same.
If there are more than one attachment after your SHIFT + TAB you can simply
right arrow to the next & the next attachment & repeat the ENTER to read it.

Hey.

Yes, that nVDA feature is, I think, a part of Windows 10 App Essentials. I
haven't played with it. I do use them on my phone (android, not iphone), but
always feel it's kind of a silly thing to do. Still, especially when talking
with my landlady, sometimes a simple emoji is best, as she just wants to go on
and on and on, and I have to indicate I'm listening, somehow. Lol

It is a little odd that JAWS can recognise them but there's no current way to
select one to input in your messages and such.

I was reading on another JAWS List and someone had used an emoji, if that's the
right word. JAWS described it when I was reading with the down-arrow key but
not the left and right arrows, so it would seem that there was no colon and
closed parenthesis to make a smiling face. Windows 10 can, they say, bring up
a list of emoji with Windows key and either the period or the semicolon. But
if it does, JAWS can't see them, and neither can I! LOL. I tried recognizing
the screen, but got no descriptions. I googled and found that there is an
add-on for NVDA that will make these emoji accessible. Not having NVDA
installed, I can't check. It would be fun if JAWS had this since we all send
stuff to sighted friends.

Presumably, everyone can already do this on their iPhones, but alas, no iPhone
yet. So, again, it would be great if JAWS would let me play! LOL.

Just sayin'

I am afraid we have some confusion on terms.
When I am in my Inbox reading my email that is where I assume you are

Shift + TAB appears to be the key stroke but from what point to get me to
the top of the tree of my folders so that I can either arrow or TAB down

Fred, don't shift-tab from the inbox, but from the inbox's message list. In
fact, when you're at the inbox folder, that's where you want to be.

For the record, it doesn't matter which folder has focus, so long as you're
in the folders list.

Hi Fred,
First of all it does not
matter what internet browser
you are using as to what you
want to do in Outlook 2010.
Now if you want to delete a
folder first go to your inbox.
Now do a shift + tab to get to
your folder list. Now arrow up
or down until you hear the
folder you want to delete or
rename. Now press the
application key and I menu
will come up. Now arrow down
to either rename or delete the
folder you want by pressing
enter on what you want done in
the menu.
Hope this helps.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Safe To Remove Hardware Message

2018-05-26 Thread George Martinez Sr
I have the same configuration as Rebecca.
This week I had a similar issue with a 16gb SD card. I heard a message
about damage but it always disappeared before I could get to it
It still worked in my Victor Stream but when I put it back in the reader I
received the same damage message and could not access it to tell Windows to
fix it. This time I went to This Computer and entered on the drive letter
and it showed NO files & I knew I had 2 books on there.
Finally, today, in frustration, I went by & picked up another SD card and it
works fine for now, transferred 2 new biographies onto it and they are
reading fine.
I am going to try to choose the format option on the old SD card and see if
I get the card back and can use it for a backup.

Hello Mike.
I'm running Windows 10, 1803, with JAWS 2018, May update.
I recently noticed that when I go to the system tray to remove a drive, I no
longer receive the message that it's safe to remove the drive.
Another friend called me yesterday with the same issue. I just assume that
it's safe. If I go back to the system tray before removing the drive, the
option to remove it shows as unavailable, as it should.
I don't know how to capture or replay those fleeting messages with JAWS. If
I virtualize the window, JAWS says there's no text. I haven't had a sighted
person look at the screen.
I can use the context menu on the drive, but again, I get no spoken message.
On another matter, has anyone else seen multiple copies of JAWS shown in the
system tray after JAWS was shut down and restarted? Shouldn't JAWS be
removed if it's shut down. This happens with both insert-f4 and
insert-windows-f4. Sometimes my save as menu won't work in Word. If I shut
JAWS down and bring it back, the menu reads as it should.
I much prefer running JAWS from the system tray, so that it won't be in the
alt-tab line up.
Sorry I don't have an answer for you, and maybe a lot of us, about
disappeared messages. Smile.

Well George,

Here's my latest report. I was looking at my to Miriam folder this evening
with Magic and its voice, and I noted that BARD sent me an email that The
New Yorker had arrived and was inserted into my wish list. So, in order to
download it, I turned on Jaws 18, downloaded the magazine, and transferred
it to an SD card for my VR Stream. While Jaws was still running, I went back
to my to Miriam folder in Outlook, and had no problem looking through the
list of emails and reading some of them. I then sent a second article to the
blind democracy list and this time, the auto complete worked beautifully.
The first time, I had to copy the blind democracy address from a document
where I've stored it because the auto complete wouldn't work. I was sure
that if I moved from the to Miriam folder to the inbox while jaws is
running, Outlook would crash. However, here I am, responding to your email
which, with all the other emails from lists, is in the inbox. Outlook didn't
crash. Jaws is fine.

I'm sure the problem isn't solved. That article that I sent to the blind
democracy list got there, but another copy was sitting around and refusing
to leave or explain why it was there. Eventually some buttons appeared and I
tried pressing them and one of them made the extra copy disappear. I'll stop
while I'm ahead and wonder what tomorrow will bring.

George,

Someone set up the "to Miriam" folder for me. The new emails sent directly
to me are all going there directly. But emails coming to me through email
lists that I'm on, are arriving in the inbox. This has always been the setup
I've had. The problem is that the "to Miriam" folder won't work. When I go
to it, it closes Outlook. Before Microsoft Disabilities worked on the
problem, the inbox didn't work either.

Hi Miriam,
Not sure about your many issues but the multiple copies of emails is not
Outlook's fault.
That is something happening with your email provider. I would call their
tech support and ask them to help with your receiving multiple copies of
emails.
Also, do you know the difference between your email being set up as iMap or
POP3? By default Outlook likes to set up nowadays as iMap and if you do not
have your email on a cell phone you should be using POP3. Ask your email
provider about that as well. Also ask them to help you set your Outlook to
delete messages off their server once downloaded.

Miriam, no, the problem isn't with JAWS 18, at least none of the ones you
identify. I'm also using Outlook 2016, along with Windows 7.
I have bad experiences with Microsoft Disability support, unless the problem
turns out to be really simple, in which case I don't need them! I'll only
call them as a last resort, and even then I've had to find someone else to
fix the damage they do.

Hi Miriam,
I am using Windows 10, Office 365 and JAWS18.
I had a somewhat similar issue but it was caused by the fact that I had a
new computer and ended up on Dell's 90day free trial of Office Suite. It
was terrible until I discovered that my Office 365 was not installed. Once
we got that fixed things are working "normal" in my Outlook 2016.
BTW-When I called Microsoft Accessibility line the tech solved HALF of my
problem but not the rest. That is not altogether uncommon there. Then I
called COX, my ISP provider where I pay for tech help, and that guy though
willing solved nothing. Finally my son and I figured out the remaining
issues and now all is well.

to which all my important emails go. That one continues to close. I asked
him to remove that folder for me and set things up so that everything goes
to the inbox, but he refused. Also, I can't address emails. Auto complete
doesn't work properly and unrelated email addresses appear, even if I just
try to write in an address. I managed to get to the address book one time,
but couldn't use it to address an email. I'm sending this because I can read
emails from my inbox and use one of the email addresses from that.
Microsoft is having someone from a higher level call back on Monday. Before
that happens, I want to know if anyone who is still using Jaws 18 and is
using Outlook 2016 has had a similar problem.

Miriam,
Word & Excel documents will always arrive in protected mode as an attachment
to an email. If you have used this file before & is now showing as
protected then that is another of those great cosmic mysteries about
computers as to what caused it.
At any rate, ALT- F, + I + E will remove the protection.

Holger Fiallo,
Here is a post from someone on this list that I saved.

1, go to desktop,
Windows key+m,

2, press the keystroke,
Ctrl+spacebar,
To unselect all icons.

3, press the applications key, and down arrow and enter on, New sub menu.

4, now arrow and enter on,
New shortcut.

5,Now type the following in the edit box, sndvol 6, tab next, press enter.
You will see/hear;
sndvol.exe
Tab finish press enter.

Now, if you would like a hot-key,

1, desktop,
Press the letter "s" until you hear,
sndvol.exe.

2, now press alt+enter to bring up the properties,

3, tab until you hear;
Shortcut key none,
Here you could type "v"=volume or what ever letter you wish, Now press
enter.
So, alt+ctrl+v would bring up the sndvol properties page.

I think also that Mike B recently posted on this subject. Anyway, I hope

Buttons, how to label buttons.

How is this done?
Mauricio Molina. When on the Internet, once you locate a button without a
label, press JAWS / Insert Key, Control + Tab. You will then be asked to
type in a label.
Carlos. Place focus on the link or button to which you want to assign a
label, press Insert+F2, and select "Custom Label" from the list.
These are different features for doing similar things. The "Prompt Creator"

applications. The "Custom Label" option is used for labeling HTML elements
like buttons and links on webpages.

Steve,

Might be, but as you say, 4 G of RAM is pretty massive. I agree that coding
is more likely the issue, since the real slowdown problems happened after
JAWS 16, when they changed "under the hood" operation. I still think JAWS is

subject to memory crowding either because of itself, or because it is using
memory areas that it did not use in the past. Most of my complaint have been

due to JAWS getting less responsive the longer it runs. After a clean
restart, it seems to get more responsive again, until it starts to slow
later.

I'll let folks know if I am more satisfied with jfw.exe set to high
priority.

Dave,

One of your issues might be 32-bit OS. That limits you as to your memory
usage which I think tops out at only 4Gigs in a 32-bit system.

combination. I checked before posting, but in the process discovered
something. I turned on JAWS key identifier mode (I hope this is the right
term) with JAWS key-1 and pressed the combo you report here. Nothing
happened, and no description. Then I tried the JAWS key-Windows key-F4
combo. Instead of telling me what it does, the operation was performed,
i.e., JAWS unloaded and reloaded.

Just a tip, guys. You can hit alt-enter on any file, including a desktop
shortcut, to see and edit its properties, instead of going through the
context menu. Doesn't save a lot of time or anything, but it's handy to know
these things. There sure are a lot of windows keyboard commands.

Matt:

We typically use the shortcut command Alt Control J.

If you can find Jaws listed as a program on your desktop or in your start
menu, then hit the applications key, and use your arrow keys until you find
properties. Hit enter on properties, and hopefully, you'll be at the
shortcut page. By tabbing through the list of options, you'll find a place
to enter that shortcut key. You may have to hit apply and ultimately ok,
but once the shortcut is saved, you then should be able to start Jaws with
that shortcut command if needed.

You can also set Jaws to start automatically when your computer boots, but
that may be going beyond what you are asking here.

demo of anything so possibly this week I might do such a thing on creating a

shortcut to start a program. No matter the program the process is the same.
We seem to be getting a lot of former window eyes people on here and this
discussion often comes up. Thanks for giving me the notion as it would be
very easy to do but obviously important for somebody who does not know the
procedure.

I'll post when it is on the server, so stay tuned folks.

Hi, Folks. I'm one of those former Window-Eyes users who went kicking and
screaming over to JAWS. All that said, I only just yesterday started using
JAWS for the first time.

Anyway, my question is: Is there a keyboard shortcut for restarting JAWS if
it and some other software don't play nice together? I'm asking because I'm
an amateur radio operator (ham) and use an interface with a radio that when
plugged into my PC, takes all the sound away, including JAWS. At that
point, I need to restart JAWS, but see no keyboard shortcut to do this.
Thoughts? Thanks in advance.--Matthew Chao

[JAWS-Users] Issues with JAWS 2018 updated with Excel

2018-02-23 Thread George Martinez Sr.
I updated my JAWS 2018 this morning in Windows 10, 1709.
It helped a lot with some nagging issues in my Outlook 2016.
However, VFO has some work to do in Excel 2016.
I use the export to Excel feature in QuickBooks almost daily and once the
Excel interface comes up JAWS 2018 does not read the Initial radial box
selection until I use INS + 5, also there is a Default button at the bottom
called EXPORT and JAWS does not initially announce it. At least I can press
ALT + X and activate it.
In addition, in Excel when I am combining workbooks into Sheets in one
workbook when I shift tab into the Dialog that names the Open Excel
workbooks I had several files that began with 2018 and 2017 and JAWS read me
"20" on both. Again when I pressed INS + 5 it read me the entire file name
but it should read the entire file name not just the first 2 characters.
In addition, I am on the QuickBooks testing team and JAWS 2018 will not
properly read QuickBooks lists of either memorized Reports or Transactions
in either QuickBooks 2017 or 2018..
On all of the above JAWS 18 does a very nice job.
I just rebooted into JAWS 18 and now am compiling a list for JAWS team.

Hello Karen,
I hear you.
Last year when I was 70 I left IE-11 kicking & screaming due to necessity;
while some bank sites stopped allowing me access the IRS and many related
sites will not allow me to access without IE-11.
So, I now use Chrome with no problems and keep IE-11 on my task bar for IRS
related sites.
There are some good tutorials around for Chrome but it is fairly straight
forward.

some websites I frequent are making it necessary. ARGH! Thanks, Karen

It is very straight forward to access the options in MAGic and to save your
settings.
Use Windows Key + T to get onto your Taskbar. Then arrow right until you
hear MAGic announced.
Press the Space Bar to bring up your User Innerface.
Now press ALT + F. The first selection is "File". Arrow right on File and
the very first selection is to Save your preferences.
While you are at it arrow up & down these selections and get with familiar

"magnification enhanced", but it wasn't. And using the alternative
directions that I was given on this list the other day didn't change the
reality. Jaws said the right words but the magnification wasn't there. The
color settings had disappeared and a sighted person got them back for me,
but I don't know if any of this is actually saved.

The easiest way is to go to the folder where your document is located and
then get it highlighted.
Now type Ctrl + C.
Now get your email addressed, fill in your subject, and proceed to the

Here type CTRL + V and it will paste your file as an attachment. Then you
can type in your message and send the email with the attachment.

Hi, George.

I don't have an answer to your specific question, but I do have some
thoughts.

First, once you've opened the page, try F5 to reload it and JAWS key+escape
to refresh. These two steps should ensure the page is stable.

You might also maximize the page with alt-spacebar followed by x.

You mention tabbing to get to the edit field. Tabbing will put you in the
edit field only if you're already in another edit field.

Finally, have you tried accessing the edit fields with another browser? I
was having a similar problem, only the reverse of yours. On a certain
website, I couldn't get into an edit field with IE11, but I could get there
with Chrome.

Hello all,
I am using windows 10, 1709, JAWS 18 and Chrome.
I have gone to a web site I go to regularly and it normally lands on a
Username field then I go onto Password.
Today it is not in the Username and when I get there it will not accept
input. I have tried Enter, Tabbing to the next field & Shift tabbing back,
also tried Alt + TAB and no joy on anything.
I also tried Ctrl + INS + HOME with no success.
I seem to remember that there is a JAWS command to force the field to
activate and accept input? Is there such a command?
Thanks,

word, do I want to make them. I press yes and get a totally blank screen,
no cursor works, not PC, JAWS, Invisible or Touch, no Alt down arrow,
nothing to indicate how I can fix the problem.

I did go into settings and try to make sure doc and dox files would be
associated with Word 2016 but even that did not cure the problem.

Microsoft Fail? Jaws 2018 Fail? Regardless of the fault this is, it should
have a way someone without any sight can fix it! Message keeps repeating,
and .doc files I receive are not opening in the correct program.

Much help appreciated, if you don't know, don't tell me you don't know.

Miriam,
When the labels & envelopes dialog first opens focus is on Delivery Address
and JAWS announces that.
TAB 3 times and focus is now in Return Address
Type in your return address then tab on to Print..
As I remember it will make that Return Address your default until modified
or deleted.
There is an "Omit" for return address if you are using a preprinted envelope
with your return address on it, or using return address labels as I do.

As I recall, once you've pressed that combo, one way to navigate the results
is to press j to enter a line number. I think it will become apparent after
you've pressed that combination. Since I don't have any mouseover controls

Right now, I'm using Jaws 18 and Magic 14 at a very high magnification.
Magic allows me to see what I am writing in emails and in word. It tracks
the cursor. I have it set for light colored letters on a dark background.
Basically, I'm depending on Jaws. But Magic really helps as a backup.
Perhaps Zoomtext and Jaws work better together at lower magnifications.

What you are experiencing is not VFO's hoped for result. I had been
planning to switch from MAGic & JAWS to Fusion next month.
6 or 7 years ago I was using Zoomtext and began using JAWS at that time but
had to give it up as the two programs fought with each other. Freedom

I may have to think about my decision to switch to Fusion.

Hi Mauricio,

Thanks for your reply. I also mostly use JAWS, but do have a very small
amount of vision and sometimes need to use ZoomText magnified at a very high
level.

I installed Fusion last weekend, and for a day or so, it seemed to work ok
except that ZoomText didn't appear to be tracking as I was typing text,
which I thought Fusion was supposed to do well.

Then JAWS started saying something different from the keys I would press,
such as control-alt-tab when I pressed alt-tab. Also, it would double speak
the letters I was typing, i.e. saying "A A" when I typed an "A".

For now I am running the components of Fusion, JAWS 18 and ZoomText 11,
together, but as the separate programs, not the Fusion program. If I try to
run fusion, not only do I have the keyboard issues I described, but it
becomes so slow as to be unusable.

My understanding was that Fusion was a combination of JAWS 18 and Zoomtext
11, so I don't understand why running the two individual programs together
works, but if I run Fusion, it is not working correctly.

something like "carryable," as in take it on trips out. But thanks for

Is the Hovercam compatible with JAWS 2018 OCR?

At work, I use ABBYY FineReader Pro 12 for OCR, which is remarkably
effective for processing scanned images downloaded as PDF files from journal
publishers. Headings and footnotes, for example, are all recognized and
converted to appropriate word processor styles. I haven't decided what to

Extremely helpful. I have a similar device called the Hovercam that seems to
function in a similar way (it snaps the photo or series of photos very fast

larger than the dimensions you give for the Pearl. Tempted as I am by the

Adrian,
The Pearl needs a USB connection to a computer, and it requires either using
JAWS 2018 in Convenient OCR mode, or Openbook. It is portable, as it folds
down into a roughly 3x3x20 inch case. Mine sits on my desk ready to use.

Very quick compared to a standard flatbed scanner, since it snaps a picture
rather than scanning across the document.

Don't have a Kurzweil, so cannot compare. Call me on the phone if you want
to talk more about it.

Phone number to follow.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Fields on web site not activating

Hello all,
This week I updated my JAWS 18, also using Windows 10 Creators. Default
browser is Chrome.
Today I went onto GoToMyPC to check a connection and heard TWO little pop
sounds when I arrived. That sound is the one I usually hear when a data
entry field is open & ready.
When I looked with MAGic my cursor is blinking in the data entry box but no
entrhy is possible. I cannot TAB or Shift TAB nor does hitting enter work.
I thought it was an issue with Chrome so I pulled up Firefox and it gives me
a funny message about my screen reader and needing to upgrade to their new
produce. So, adios Firefox.
Then I tried IE-11 and I have the same problem at the same web site!
I went back to Chrome and tried my online banking site and that still works.
Go figure.
It appears there is some new issue in JAWS with this last update but not on
all web sites.

Re: [JAWS-Users] J2018.1712.10 Update Direct Download Links + What's New

2017-12-13 Thread George Martinez Sr
Hi Mike,
I just rebooted & updated JAWS18 before I could get to your link this
morning. Thanks for the link.
This JAWS18 update did solve the little wonky in my Windows login where JAWS
was repeating "password" about 3 times. It now works nicely.
Now, I am going to try the 2018 update. That has been a source of pain for
me as every time I shut down JAWS 18 and bring up 2018 and perform some work
and then go back to 18 I have to run a full repair on 18 AND my MAGic14,
yuk.
Sorry about your Dodgers this year.
George

Enhancements in JAWS 2018.1712.10 (December 2017)
The following is a list of improvements made between the initial JAWS 2018
release and the December 2017 update.

Screen Shade for Additional Privacy

For additional privacy, use the JAWS Screen Shade to prevent others from
seeing what you are typing or reading by turning the screen black. This
feature
is available in Windows 10 and Windows 8.

To turn on the Screen Shade, press INSERT+SPACEBAR followed by the
PRINTSCREEN key, or triple tap with three fingers on a touch screen.
Alternatively,
Screen Shade can be toggled on or off using Quick Settings (INSERT+V). Once
enabled, the contents of your screen can no longer be seen. The Screen Shade
remains active until toggled back off, or JAWS is restarted. Screen Shade
can also be turned off by doing a right mouse click.

Note: Screen Shade is strictly a privacy feature and will not increase the
battery life on a laptop or tablet. Additionally, Screen Shade is only
available
when JAWS is running by itself. It cannot be used when running Fusion, or
when running JAWS together with ZoomText or MAGic.

Speech On Demand

Speech On Demand is a feature that allows you to limit the amount of JAWS
speech you hear as you navigate windows and documents or perform other
actions
using hot keys. By default, when using Speech On Demand, JAWS only announces

actions that are associated with a limited set of hot keys. In addition,
mouse
echo and typing echo are still available, which allows JAWS to read text
that you point to with the mouse pointer and speak characters and words as
you
type. You can quickly toggle between Speech On Demand and full speech using
a convenient layered command, or even make Speech On Demand the default
speech
mode when JAWS starts.

For JAWS users who rely heavily on Braille or for users of Fusion that can
see well enough to use the screen for tracking focus, too much speech can be
overwhelming while navigating using the keyboard and mouse. However, users
still want to be able to use speech to read once they have moved to a
location
on the screen, or just checking a Window Title, column heading in a table or

spread sheet, or even reading the time from the System tray. In both these
situations, Speech On Demand can be very helpful. You will find that
switching applications with ALT+TAB or using ARROW keys to move through a
document
are silenced. Speech is only triggered when using a limited set of reading
commands such as speaking the current character, word, line, paragraph, or
doing
a Say All.

Layered commands to toggle the feature:

list of 2 items
. Press INSERT+SPACEBAR followed by S to toggle the speech mode between Full

Speech and either Speech On Demand (the default) or Mute speech. Focus
braille
display users can also press RIGHT SHIFT+M (DOTS 1-3-4) to toggle between
Speech On Demand and Full Speech.
. Press INSERT+SPACEBAR followed by SHIFT+S while Full Speech is disabled to

toggle between Speech On Demand and Mute speech.
list end

By default, JAWS always returns to Full Speech when restarted after these
keystrokes have been used. To make permanent changes to the default
settings,
do the following:

list of 10 items
1. Press INSERT+F2, and select Settings Center.
2. If you want changes to only apply to a particular application, select it
from the Application list. Otherwise, press CTRL+SHIFT+D to load the default
settings file.
3. In the tree view, expand the Speech Options group.
4. Press the SPACEBAR on Speech Mode to change the default choice between
Less Speech or Full Speech. Full Speech is selected by default.
5. Press the SPACEBAR on Less Speech Options to change the default choice

Generally when that happens to me in Notepad it stores it where I stored the
prior file. Of course, that is a problem if you cannot remember where the
prior file went. But hopefully you can remember the name of one of those

Re: [JAWS-Users] Please help ...... Missing files & folders

2017-11-30 Thread George Martinez Sr
Hi Laura,
Not sure, but it sounds to me like all you want to do is re-order your files
into "Date Modified" order instead of by Name.
If this is the case then get into the folder where your files are located
and press the TAB once. This will take you into the title bar for the
folder now right arrow once to "Date Modified" and Enter. If they are in
the wrong date order then repeat this process. Be careful because it is
most likely that when you TAB it will be on Date Modified where it went
last.

Hi.

In the search box, when you type something in, try pressing the down arrow.
JAWS will then speak the name of a file or folder, if the computer finds
anything.

>From what you just described, your files are all still there, and not
missing. You could use the left and right arrow to see your files. They are
now longer being displayed in a vertical list, and it sounds like that's the
kind of layout you want.
You probably have a different view option set for your documents folder. In
file explorer, hit alt-v, for the view tab of the ribbon. Hit the tab key
until you hear "layout tool-bar". Hit enter on this and you will see a list
of view options. "details" should work. Now on the right side you will see
some columns with file properties, rather than more files, so your up and
down arrows will move vertically through the list.

Hope this makes sense.

When I pressed the windows key and then type in the name of a folder this
doesn't do anything and I can't get Jaws to read what I typed in the search
box. Also, when I'm in my documents I can press the first letter of a
folder or file that is missing and find it that way. All my folders and
files were listed in alphabetical order where I could just arrow down
through all of them; folders at the top in alphabetical order and then files
after that. Somehow that has gotten messed up. How can I get my folders
and files listed in my documents the way I had them before this happened?

Hi Laura.

Try using Windows 10 search to look for the files. Hit the windows key. The

results will appear in a list and you should also see the path where the

Hi Adrian,
Sorry for my delay in getting back to you. I did talk to my son and because
I do not really understand his answer I did not have anything clear to tell
you.
Basically, what you are seeing is the result of two things: 1. A mandate to
make their web site more accessible and 2. A new format to integrate another
trading company Schwab purchased 7-8 years ago. He told me they have some
of the new pages up but all will not will be up until January. That seems
to be the reason for 2 people have differing experiences in what they see.
Try contacting the guy I just saw recommended and if, after contacting him,
you are still searching to understand let me know and I will see if my son
would be willing to visit with you on the issue. He is running an IT team
right now as one of his responsibilities but they are on the customer
service end of things.

As you probably know there are several levels of PDF, in terms of
sophistication and readability. As some would say, "there is PDF and there

The IRS has always had the very best in PDF documents.
As not many people have Abbyy Finereader or Adobe Acrobat, your thought

Having said that, I still would not use it unless you have trouble typing; it

As far as J-Dictate, I have no idea, never used it.

I have a small Schwab account but go there rarely.
My son is a Senior Manager with them and coming by in a few hours to watch a

Does anyone on the list use the Schwab website? They've changed it today,
and I'm finding it a nightmare. Another JAWS user friend of mine is not
experiencing these changes, which makes me speculate that they're rolling
them out at different times in different regions.

hello;
if your wanting to add an email address to your contacts using outlook2016,
try the following;

1, enter on the message which has the contact's email address,

2, now press the keystroke,
ctrl+shift+y=copy item to dialog,

3, press the letter "c" until you hear contacts and press enter,

note a screen will come up with all the pertinate information,
person's name,
email address,
and, you can add to any of the edit fields,
if you are satisfied with the information,
you can simply press, alt+s=save,
now your placed back into the message.
hope this helps.
I believe this will work for earlier versions of outlook.

J-Say is a British program that has been around for years, a wrap-around Dragon

to learn it years ago in order to teach a younger blind person with Multiple

Having said that, I still would not use it unless you have trouble typing; it

As far as J-Dictate, I have no idea, never used it.

to clog the list with stuff folks don’t care about. I am curious about the J

Re: [JAWS-Users] adding an address from within a message using outlook 2016

2017-11-22 Thread George Martinez Sr
James,
Not at all sure how this Subject and question got on top of the below emails
but...
Outlook in general and 2016 in particular is a very powerful email, calendar,
projects, notes etc. program. The rule of thumb with computer programs is the
more powerful the longer the learning curve and less "friendly."
There are a lot of very smart & experienced people on this list but none of
them can give you more than a quick start with Outlook.
You are going to have to spend some money for tutoring or spend some quality
time with Mr. Google researching like the rest of us did & still do.
For instance a recommended Google search, "Outlook 2016 adding a contact" or
"Outlook 2016 adding a folder"
You will find very good answers with this type of search and many times they
are written by Microsoft Software Engineers.

[JAWS-Users] ALT + TAB brings up JAWS interface rather than last file

2017-11-20 Thread George Martinez Sr
Hello All,
I use ALT + TAB many times a day as a convenient way to go back & forth
between screens
However, about a fourth of the time when I enter ALT + TAB it will take me
to the JAWS interface rather than the last program I just left.
Since this is not a consistent behavior I am believing it is some sort of
sequential issue. Does anyone else experience this?
I am using JAWS 18 on the Task Bar and Windows 10 Creators.

George, in case there's any confusion, JAWS 19 is what FS eventually
released as JAWS 2018. Amusing that their 2018 OCR message betrays the
original intent to continue with the previous version numbering sequence. As
I'm sure you know, 2018 introduces an expanded version of Convenient OCR. I
have yet to try it because 2018 gives me new Outlook and IE11 problems, but

There have been several questions about OCR and saving the scanned results.
This is what I did. This is a bit detailed, so delete as you please.
Smile.

I'm using Windows 10 1709 Creator update, Jaws 2018 and Word 2010.

I have several image files saved so was able to test using these formats"
PDF and JPG.

Rather than first opening the PDF file, waiting for the

"alert, empty document,"

message, and then scanning with the layered keystrokes, insert-spacebar, o,
then d,

with the PDF file selected in a folder in Documents, I used the context menu
key, also known as the application key, and arrowed down to

Recognize with JAWS.

I pressed enter and after a second or two, JAWS said

Started.

The scanned information was there to read. I was able to select and copy it
with the usual Windows commands, either shift-down arrow to select, or
control a, to select all, and control c to copy.

I then pasted the results into Word, and there it was, to be saved as usual.
I did not try to save in Notepad, assuming that if all worked in Word,
notepad would be no different.

As to the second format, a print letter with an embedded picture, scanned
in Kurzweil and saved as a JPG image, it worked a bit different.

All went the same until I pasted the copied information into Word. Again, I
used the context menu key on the file name to arrow to

Recognize with JAWS.

I was told that the image was right-side up, and there was the text waiting
to be read. But when I copied and pasted it into Word, Word was not happy,
smile, and kept giving me information about

non-uniform tables, row and column information. Rather than playing with my
table settings in the JAWS quick settings menu, I figured notepad might be a
better option in this case.

When I pasted the same copied results into notepad, the file read as it had
when scanned by JAWS.

At this point, just because I prefer saving in Word, I reselected the
information in notepad, copied it, and pasted it into Word. Word was no
longer cross, muttering about tables, so all was well.

For those who have made it to the end, HTH. Smile.

I just did a CTRL + A and pasted into NOTEPAD.

Perhaps you are using Wordpad or something like it that has some formatting

Kevin, no horse hockey here. I suspect you just need to delete the Word
document text before you paste the Notepad text back. Steps:

Select all in Word
Ctrl C copy
Del to clean it out.
Open Notepad
Ctrl V to paste
Esc to remove highlight
Ctrl A to select again
Ctrl C to copy
Go back to the empty Word document
Ctrl V to paste.

I am intrigued by those other suggestions of Alt + H + E and alt, ctrl,
shift, S with F6.
Have to try them some time.

Agreed about MSFT and IE.
But, this behavior has been occurring for at least a year; and it doesn't
occur when using other screen readers.
The problem is that it is not totally replicable; you can try the same thing

and it might only happen ten percent of the time.

I haven't had this issue with Googl3e Chrome, but since a lot of people
still use IE, it is frustrating that this problem is so widespread.

Microsoft is taking their foot off the pedal with IE-11. Therefore, you
should get used to using another browser.
Several of the banks I log into for clients stopped allowing me to login
with IE-11 forcing me to switch.
Now for the good part, a number of IRS web sites I use for professionals
will not allow you to use anything but IE-11.
So, I now have 3 browsers loaded on my task bar with Chrome as my default.

Adobe Acrobat latest version will do the trick & drain your pocketbook.
I use Abby Fine Reader Pro 12 and it works great for me. It will convert PDF
to Microsoft Word or Text. I paid around $115 from Staples online.

Hello all,

I am using Windows 8.1-64 and Jaws 16.

Some time ago, there was a discussion on PDF converters. Someone recommended a
very good payed one, but I don’t remember wich it was. I need something that
will keep formating, font type, etc.

The Jaws OCR is a good solusion for when you just need to read something, but
not to work on it. For example, I might be getting a translation job and the
documents I have to translate has pages in text imige, like tables.

So, please, if someone could recommend me a good conversion software I would
apreciate it very much.

Thank you in advance.

Regards,

Teresa Arroyo Llosa

autofill update?
what is that!
the update I'm referring to is, the office 2016 update.
you can get their bye, opening word2016,
now press, alt+f=file,
now press the letter's d/r,
you will hear;
update, now!
here you would press enter.
if there's update available the update process will begin.
it's probably best to close the current open document screen, so, after the
downloading the update, the updates can be installed.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Scanned Image and JAWS OCR

Morning all.

I just scanned a copy of my discharge papers from the US Coast Guard. After
saving it, I tried to open it and read it using JAWS OCR. I pressed the
JawsKey and Spacebar. Then I hit O for OCR, and then D. I heard a piano
chime, but nothing from JAWS after that. Can anyone tell me what I am doing
wrong on this? I went into my pictures folder in This PC to get the
properties on the image, but could not get any specifics on it. I am running
JAWS 17 and Windows 10 on a Dell laptop. I am also using a Canon CanoScan
scanner. Thanks in advance.

2017-10-23 Thread George Martinez Sr
I have only read a couple of messages in this thread but I just saw your
comment about how expensive Outlook is, especially since you have 3
machines.
I believe you are thinking of the $69 copy for 1 machine. I use the
$100annual version and load it onto FIVE machines. I could also pay $9.95
per month for the same. For this I get the entire Microsoft Office Suite of
programs with Outlook.

Hi,

I've been having a lot of trouble with e-mail programs. I use to use Eudora,

but it no longer works; I've been trying to use Windows Live Mail, but about
20
percent of the time it will not let me open an e-nail with the message, "A
problem occured while trying to open this message. A problem has occured.
Please try again."

I have tried to download Thunderbird, but have been unsuccessful installing
it.
Years ago, I downloaded Thunderbird, and it installed like other programs
and
it worked.

I Think that Outlook is too expensive, especially since I have to buy a copy

for all three of my machines.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I work for the state of Pennsylvania. After some testing, the entire state
has elected to distribute Microsoft Office 365 to all of its agencies and
employees. Once in stalled, that outlook version is quite stable but the
security measures required when installing the software are enough to pull
out what little hair I have left. (grin)
When it comes to browsers though, the newer versions of Jaws seem to be
dealing better with Google chrome and even with the Microsoft Edge. It's
not perfect but Jaws is certainly getting there.
My compliments to Eric and the work his team has been doing along with
Microsoft. My sighted reps tell me that Edge is pretty good. That, as they
say, remains to be seen.

headers in a spreadsheet and then "C" will read column headers.
Is there a similar command that reads both column AND row headers?
