How can I get the music to stop playing on a webpage when I open the page?
Moving away from the page and going back doesn't work.

I now use the latest version of Jaws 18, and it works relatively well with
Office 365.

When I first purchased Office 365, I was using Jaws 16, and had some issues,

which is what caused me to upgrade to Jaws 17 and ultimately 18.

I don't remember what those issues were, but I do recall that some of them
were significant, especially in relation to Outlook 2016.

Hi,
Do you have the insert key mode checked?
If not here is how you get to it.
1, Open the Settings Center in either of these 2 ways.
A, Press, Insert / Jaws Key + 6, on the number row above the main keyboard.
B, Press, Insert / Jaws Key + F2,
2, press, control, shift , + D, to open the Settings Center Default All
Applications.
3, Arrow down to, Users, right arrow to open.
4, Arrow down to, Insert Key Mode, press space bar to check this box.
Here's the explanation of this option:
When selected, the INSERT key functions as a sticky key. Any key pressed
immediately after pressing the INSERT key is treated as if it were pressed
in combination with the INSERT key. This check box is cleared by default.
5, tab to ok, press the space bar
Patti

I cross my left hand over my right to press insert leaving my right hand on
the home row to press the J. The one that I find difficult on my current
laptop is Insert+Function+semicolon to route the JAWS cursor to the PC
cursor. The Insert key and the semicolon are on the same side of the
keyboard. The Function key and Insert key are in opposite corners of the
keyboard.

Hi, Loy. It's completely up to you, but you might want to explain why you
find the insert key hard to use in some combinations. Armed with that
information, people who use the caps lock instead of insert could give you
an idea of whether you might face similar problems with that key.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] URGENT! Authorization number?

Hello,

Yes, I know, "don't shout", but I have a JAWS-RELATED work emergency and
need immediate help from someone on this list if possible. The short version
is that a workstation critical for every aspect of my job keeps giving me
the choice of "demonstration mode for 40 minutes", or activating "full
version", which is already there and has been for years. To confirm and use
that version I need the authorization code. I don't have the CD which
contains it, and the supervisor who does is away. Is there a place within
the JAWS menu or Help to find that authorization code? I think I used to
know this. Thank you all for anything you can tell me.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Re-starting Jaws 18

2017-08-05 Thread Annette Carr
I agree with Adrian. I've found that I have to manually remove the shortcut
from the previous JAWS version before I can put it in for the latest version
installed. For me this is not a big deal as again, I have the same practice
as Adrian. I usually have the current version, and the 2 previous versions
installed on my machine. So I go in and first change the oldest version to
Control+Alt+L, the version prior to the current version to Control+Alt+k,
and set the current version to Control+Alt+j.

HTH,
Annette

In addition, at least in my past experience, you first need to remove that
hotkey from the previous version of JAWS, assuming you keep it on the
system. Someone posted a while ago that creating a shortcut for a new
version of JAWS makes the shortcut go away in the earlier one, but that was
never my experience. Sometimes I'll assign a hotkey to each version of JAWS
on my system, such as control-alt-j for the current version, control-alt-k
for the preceding one, etc. But you can see the problem. The logical
shortcut would be control-alt-I, since I precedes j in the alphabet, but
I've already assigned control-alt-I to Internet Explorer.
In any event, be sure to remove an the shortcut from an old version of JAWS
before assigning that shortcut to the new version.

Hi Miriam,
When you install a new version of Jaws you will have to put the hotkey back
in again. So for example when Jaws 19 comes out you will have to put the
hotkey back in again. Just remember that. Also if you go to the Jaws
website and get a complete version of Jaws with an update and install it you
will have to reinstall the hotkey for Jaws.

Hi Miriam,
Do you have the shortcut setup for your Jaws? Here are the steps to do that.
1. Press windows + M to go to your desktop.
2. Press the letter J until you hear Jaws 18.
3. Press the application key and arrow up one time and press enter on
properties.
4. Tab two times and you should hear short cut key. If it says none then
press the letter J
If it says shortcut key ctrl+alt+J then just press the escape key.
6. Now tab until you hear ok, then press enter. Another dialog box may come
up just press yes or continue then you should be done.

Now you should have a shortcut key so when you press ctrl+alt+J it should
start Jaws. Now if you use the other hotkey that now should work.

Tap the applications key or Shift+F10

Arrow down to style and right arrow to open the Style submenu.

Down arrow to clear and press Enter.

select the whole doc with Control a or I select a specific portion of a

press the Alt key and make sure I am on the Home menu. I arrow down once and

Morning all.

Can anyone tell me if there is a way to change the font size in Word 2013,
if the original text is not uniform i.e., some of the text is a different
size than other parts of text? I want to enlarge text, and reduce text sizes
in a word document as a whole document; and not have to go through the
document and change the sizes one part at a time. I hope this makes sense. I
am using JAWS 17, Word 2013 (as stated before), Windows 10, and a dell

Hey group,

Yesterday my outlook 2010 was acting a little weird so I closed it down and
restarted my PC. Now it seems as though Outlook has reset the calendar to a
kind of factory default. All my appointments are missing, and the calendar
is presented in a grid view with holidays starting in 2009. But, I don't
think my appointments are completely gone because my reminder window is
still being populated with appointment times that have come and gone. Prior
to this calendar malfunction, there was a window that gave me the choice of
either snooze, restart and something else. I thought it was for the creator
update, but it wasn't. Perhaps I have installed an update that messed up my
calendar? I thought about a system restore, but wasn't sure it would help.
Maybe I should go ahead and do it anyway?
I'm running Jaws 18 and I would sure appreciate some helpful information on
this one.

Thanks,

Re: [JAWS-Users] Positions and Sizing pics in PPT

2017-07-25 Thread Annette Carr
Hi,

It has been a while since I dealt with inserting pictures into a PowerPoint
slide deck, but here is what I used to do.

Insert the picture from the Insert Menu.
Use the Tab key to move from object to object on the slide until you come
to the picture.
Use your application key to bring up a context menu and navigate to
"position and size" or something like that.

A dialog box comes up and you can control the position from one tab, and the
size from another tab.

I would be interested in knowing if this works for you.

Taking a survey on some methods that people are using when dealing with
pictures in PPT. I have a method, but it involves checking place holder
position before the picture is place into the slide holder, taking notes and
then once the pic is inserted you have to resize to fit the original size of
the place holder. It works very well, but it can be time consuming. I am
wondering what some others are doing when placing pics into PPT.

In the category list that appears for customizing the keyboard press A until

Use tab key and you might need to wait a couple seconds for the list to

Press the letter E to move down to the items that start with that letter.
You want to check the EditFind and EditReplace items. You will need to
arrow down several times to find them.
For each of those items tab to the box that shows keys currently being used

If the two commands mentioned above already have the correct keystrokes

for the find and replace menu, I typed paragraph mark on the find and typed
in blank line in the replace with, tab to all and activated the search.

Word said, it didn't find anything, but the document stills reads wrong.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Using Win 10 1703 and J 18.

[JAWS-Users] information about BARD

2017-07-08 Thread Annette Carr
Hi all,

I received this information in another email from another list. Just in case
some of you have not received this information yet, I am posting it below.

Annette

From: NLS Documents for Network Librarians
[mailto:nls-repo...@listserv.loc.gov] On Behalf Of nls-reports-admin

Sent: Friday, July 07, 2017 12:11 PM

To:

nls-repo...@listserv.loc.gov

this coming Sunday, July 9th. There will be no change to the URL for the
homepage. Your bookmarks to the longstanding NLS URL for the homepage will
still function correctly and take you to the new site. The longstanding URL
for BARD login will also remain exactly the same. No changes have been made to
BARD or the NLS catalog. The site has also undergone repeated accessibility
and screen reader testing here at NLS and out in the field.

Please be aware of the following issues and activities during the switchover
period of three days, from Sunday the 9th through Tuesday the 11th.

1. The old website-the one we're all familiar with-will continue to exist
through October (at least) and our patrons can continue to use it while they
gradually become familiar with the new site.

Its URL, however, will change: the old site will no longer be at
www.loc.gov/nls
, but rather at www.loc.gov/nlsold

. There will be a prominent link on the homepage of
the new website-on the left-hand side, under the box of "Quick Links"-so that
patrons can jump back to the homepage of the old website if they wish to.

If they are on the old site, there will be an equally prominent link so they
can jump to the new site.

2. On the new website, the "Search" field at the right top edge will be
optimized only once the switch of URLs is made on Sunday and Monday. For that
reason, it may be a couple days before it is fully functioning. Patrons can
use built-in navigation on the new site to find what they are looking for
during this brief period. We appreciate your patience during the time required
for the "Search" to become fully optimized for searching the new site.

3. During the same three-day period, for the most visited areas of our
website, we will be embedding new internal URLs and redirected URLs so that
patrons can easily find what they are looking for. Again, we appreciate your
patience as this process is completed.

4. We will be grateful for your feedback about any issues you encounter, or
suggestions you can make. Please send them to d...@loc.gov
  and
ms...@loc.gov
. We will log and prioritize those changes we cannot
make immediately so that we can iterate on them continuously in the weeks to
come.

Hi Patti,

Navigate to the sheet you want to delete. Use the Insert+Shift+s command to
open a context menu with various things that you can do to the sheet. Arrow
down to Delete. I think a submenu opens and you arrow to sheet. You will
find yourself in one of your other sheets when done deleting.

Re: [JAWS-Users] How to indent the paragraph in MS word 2007?

2017-07-08 Thread Annette Carr
Hi Justin,

It has been a while since I used Word2007, but you can try this.

If you are only trying to indent the first line of the paragraph, place your
cursor on the first letter of the first line and press tab.

If you are wanting to indent the entire paragraph from the left margin, you
will need to use something like the hanging paragraph setting, or something
like that. I cannot remember if using this if the right edge of that
indented paragraph will be indented to the left of the right margin.

Good Luck!

Re: [JAWS-Users] How can I lock the JAWS key?

2017-07-05 Thread Annette Carr
Pressing Shift 5 times to turn on Sticky Keys is a Microsoft function, not a
function of any of the screen readers. Having sticky keys turned on will
only help with executing 1 key activation after you press Control, Alt or
Shift. I do not remember Sticky Keys working with the Insert key, but it
has been a while since I have worked with Sticky Keys. If Sticky Keys does
work with the Insert key, it will only help with using the Insert+F12 to get
the date. It will not keep the Insert key activated in order to press the
F12 twice as needed to get JAWS to say both the time and date.

Dear List,

Imagine you had one hand and you could only press one key at a time.
In NVDA, you could turn on Sticky Keys by pressing Shift 5 times and then
lock the NVDA key by pressing it twice. This would enable you to press F12
twice quickly to hear the date (and not the time).

Is it possible to do the same in JAWS? And yes, I know all about Settings
Centre > Default > User > Insert Key Mode. It doesn't work.
And don't tell me to use my thumb and forefinger. I want to know if it's
possible to make JAWS speak the date by pressing only one key at a time.

TIA!

Hi Matt,

Here are 2 ideas that are really grasping at straws. First see if changing
your display resolution makes a difference. Next, if at all possible run
the same version of Access and JAWS on a different machine and see how that
goes.

When you are using your file, is the application or the file being accessed
from a network instead of from your local computer?

Hello list,

I've got an issue I've been fighting with for a long time, and just recently
was told about this list! Here's my issue in short - I have an Access
database with a table with about 12,000 records. Starting at version 17,
when I open the table in Datasheet view, JAWS and Access crash if I attempt
to either go to the ribbons or use the Application key.

I have seen this in Office 2010, 2013 and 2016, on Windows 7, 8.1, and 10,
on various hardware, desktops and laptops.

In JAWS 16 and earlier, no issue.

VFO support tried using my database on the latest JAWS build and Office 2016
(back in January), and claimed they could not replicate the problem. (?)

In general, I like to keep running the current version of things, if for no
other reason than the security updates, and it's kind of a pain if I want to
go in and sort or filter my table to find certain things.

Anyone out here have some thoughts? Appreciate all your help!

Kind regards,
Matt

Usually when something that visually looks like a bullet in the middle of a
line, it is some type of special character or graphic. Word will not let

When using the bullet feature in MS-Word, it provides a very clean visual
appearance. Let me see if I can explain. The bullet will be up against the
left margin, or most frequently ÂĽ of an inch to the right of the left
margin. This is called the hanging indent. The start of the text will be a
little to the right of the bullet. As an example, let's say that the bullet
is 1/4 of an inch wide, and the space between the bullet and the start of
the text is 1/4 of an inch. This means that the text is starting 1/2 of an
inch away from the left margin. This is called the left indent and is .5 of
an inch from the left margin. If the text you are typing is longer than the
line and needs to wrap down to the next line, the start of that subsequent
line will be positioned right under the start of the previous lineÂ’s text at
the 1/2 inch mark from the left margin. When you are at the beginning of a
line, you can use the Insert+f command to learn about the hanging indent and
left indent positions. If JAWS announces Aligned left, then you know the
text is flush against the left margin and there is not a bullet at the start
of the information.

The use of bullets makes it easier for the visual reader to quickly move
from one item to the next. Personally, I find it also allows me to quickly
move through bulleted information with JAWS.

Annette

Re: [JAWS-Users] laptop questions

2017-06-14 Thread Annette Carr
Hi Tammy,

I have primarily used Toshiba and Dell. Others in my house have used HP,
although not with JAWS. In my opinion, all 3 brands have been very
reliable. With that said, my husband had a Toshiba and it was nothing but
trouble.

I have used laptops for nearly 30 years. None of them have had a separate
number pad from the keyboard. With my very first laptop, I attempted to use
an external number pad, and could never find one that allowed me to execute
JAWS commands. As a result I have learned to use the embedded number pad,
and have the JAWS Keyboard layout set to Desktop. Sometimes this does
require interesting finger gymnastics, but it works for me.

When I'm looking for a new laptop, I look for the one that provides me with
the most up-to-date features for the lowest cost. Yes, this probably means
that I will spend more money than I want, but I've always gotten 5 plus
years out of my laptops. I also look for the lightest weight one with a
keyboard that feels right under my fingers, i.e. shape and size of the keys,
spacing between keys, and firmness when activating. Finally, battery life
is a factor as well.

With my current Toshiba dinosaur, I've gotten spoiled by a button between
the keyboard and the mouse that allows me to turn the mouse on and off as
needed. My work Dell laptop requires me to use a keyboard command to turn
the mouse pad on and off, and that is not so bad. As much as I would love
to say that I can tackle everything and anything on my computer without some
sighted help here and there, that is just not the case. So being able to
turn the mouse on and off as needed is very convenient.

Many many years ago I bought one of my computers from MicroCenter and their
service was great. They removed all of the junk and even installed JAWS for
me. Another family member went there a number of years later and was not
happy with the service. The last time I checked, their prices were higher
than Best Buy where I've bought the past 2 computers over the past 11 years.
Also with the last 2 purchases, I used the Dell and the Toshiba technical
support. Both were very good at that time. The Toshiba tech support
figured out how to turn off the "touch sensitive control panel so that I
could not accidently turn things on and off. Now with the Microsoft
Disability Support line, you have another source for help. Although
sometimes having all of these support options can get you in a position
where they each point the finger at the other one to address the problem.

Good luck and let us know what you end up doing. My current Toshiba is now
six and a half years old, so I'm sure a replacement is not too far around
the corner.

Annette

Hello,

Which brand would you recommend? Why?
2. What brand would you totally avoid? Why??
3. Since I use Jaws, would it be better to purchase a system off the shelf
or have one custom built? I have had them custom built before because I
didn't want all of the games and extra unaccessible programs taking up
space.

These will do for a start.

Afternoon all. Can anyone tell me how to check for an email message that has
an attachment in it? I went into my sent folder, and found the message, but
I tabbed around in the message, but could not find the attachment in it. Is
there some kind of neat trick for doing this? I am using JAWS 17, Windows
10, a dell laptop, and WLM version 2012, build 16 (I finally found that bit
of important information). Many thanks in advance.

Hi Brian,

I have noticed that sometimes I have to wait a very long time for the Excel
ribbon to respond at work. We are thinking that it might have something to
do with things that are going on in the background with the server, or
possibly resources with the computer. Just some food for thought.

Hi List,

I have someone in my company running the latest build of JAWS 17 on Windows
7 SP1, and the Ribbon in Excel 2010 becomes unresponsive. This issue has
been going on the last few weeks. Restarting the computer seems to fix the
issue temporarily. When I was called to their office, they opened an Excel
document that fetched information from a database. I attempted to access
the Ribbon with Alt and the arrow keys. I can access the main tabs but
cannot go down another level into the details of each tab. They open this
same excel file daily to look at the information generated from the
database. I saw some add-ins that were running. So, I disabled them and
restarted. As of right now, the Ribbon seems to be working ok. Any idea as
to why this may be happening?

Thanks for your help,

[JAWS-Users] Google Sheets & FormMule AddOn

2017-05-22 Thread Annette Carr
Hello All,

Some of you might remember a few weeks ago that I posted to the list asking
if anyone knew how to access Google Sheets and Google Forms with JAWS. I
have conducted hours of researched and messed around with the 2 Google Apps
and have successfully created a form and a spreadsheet that collects the
responses from the form submissions. I'll be honest, it was not intuitive,
and I do not always know how I accomplished some of the things, but never
the less I was successful.

So now I am faced with a new hurtle. I want to use a Google Sheet AddOn
called FormMule. I was able to successfully install the AddOn, but I can't
figure out how to use it. Maybe I should rephrase that to say, I can't get
JAWS to read anything in it. Does anyone know how to access FormMule with
JAWS, or have a recommendation of a Different Google AddOn which will allow
me to create and automated confirmation e-mail message after a form has been
submitted?

Thanks in advance.

Annette

Goldwave will also work for this. I do have a caveat here:

Most interfaces you can buy require the same drivers used by JAWS (ACIO). A
second sound card, or some software gymnastics may be required to get such
an interface and JAWS to work together.

Alternatively, you can simply connect an RCA to 1/8" (3.5 mm.) cable and
input the audio through your microphone input. Try to get an "attenuated"
or resistant cable, as microphone and line levels are quite different from
each other. Then, start the movie in your VC$R or the music cassette and
use Goldwave's recording function. The file can then be saved in any audio
format you like. I will warn you; even with this method I've had numerous
driver conflicts/resource demand conflicts when trying to use JAWS (version
14.0/Win7 Pro) to do this, but when successful the quality is awesome.

BTW, the above only applies to capturing audio from the tapes; video import
does require a separate interface.

Hope this helps,

Paul

If this can be done, and I am sure it can be done, as some years ago my
nephew attempted to convert commercial video cassettes I had purchased to
the DVD format. There was a block on them. Forbidding the video part to
be copied. Prior to attempting to copy any vhs. cassettes which were
purchased, my advice would be to make sure the video can also be copied. I
attempted to copy vhs cassettes to other vhs cassettes. I discovered they
were not viewable by sighted people. As the picture was scrambled. After I
copied them.

Re: [JAWS-Users] google sheets and setting columns and rows

2017-04-25 Thread Annette Carr
Hi Justin,

At this point I do not know the answer to your questions about reading
column and row names in Google Sheets. I am just starting out with using
it, and I'm finding navigation and command execution to be very
inconsistent. Do you have any tips? I read somewhere that Virtual Cursor
needs to be turned off. I use Insert+Z to toggle it on and off. Sometimes
I can accomplish things with it off and other times things work better when
it is on.

Do you have any idea how life is improved with the Google Sheets "screen
reader support" toggled on with the Control+Alt+z command?

I have successfully somehow gotten to a blank spreadsheet and entered in a
small bit of data. After that I have not been successful getting back into
the file, or much else.

Any help you can provide will be appreciated.

Judy,

There are a number of things that drive the cost of any product. There are
up-front costs that go into research and development before a product is
ready to be sold to the customer. Then there are production, advertising
and distribution costs which continue for the life of the product. The
manufacturer adds up all of these costs and then divides it up by the
potential number of customers. When you look at the customer base for a
product like Microsoft Office verses JAWS, there are fewer potential JAWS
users than Office users.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Copy and Paste

2017-03-17 Thread Annette Carr
Hi Jerry,

In order to ensure that all cell attributes come over to your new sheet and
to avoid having to re-do the column widths and other things, Do a copy
sheet. Here are the instructions.

. Open the workbook where the old sheet is, and navigate to that
sheet.

. Use Insert+Shift+s to open a context menu that allows you to do
things with entire sheets.

. Navigate to Move/Copy Sheet and press enter.

. A dialog box opens and you have just 3 things that you need to do.

o If you want to Move/Copy the sheet within the workbook that it resides
in, go down to the next step. If you want to Move/Copy the sheet into a new
or already existing workbook, Shift+Tab out of this list box and into a
combo box and select where you want the sheet to go. Once selected, Tab back
to the list box.

o The list box will list all sheets that reside in the workbook where you
want the sheet to be Move/Copy to, plus other options when applicable. Use
up and down arrow to select. If you selected New Workbook from the combo
box, this list will be empty.

o Tab to the Checkbox. If you are wanting to copy the sheet to the new
location either in the current workbook or in another, place a check in the
box. If you are moving the sheet, leave it unchecked.

o Tab to Ok and you will find yourself on the sheet you were
moving/copying and in the subsequent workbook if you elected to place it in
a different book.

o If you copied the sheet in the same workbook where it originally
resided, there will be a number placed at the end of the sheet name. If you
want to change the sheet name, you can again use the Insert+Shift+s command
and navigate to Rename. Be aware that sometimes JAWS does not read the
contents of the field when renaming the sheet.

HTH,

Annette

Hi Mike,

Let me start out by saying the majority of people who have to type with one
hand prefer to use the standard keyboard. They shift their hand from the
traditional "home row" position to the letters F, G, H & I. They then just
learn how to type with their 4 fingers from that position. If the user has
small hands, there are small keyboards designed for users with smaller
hands, or those who activate the keyboard with some type of pointer stick
(see info below on alternative keyboards). They also find it helpful to
turn on "Sticky Keys" which eliminates the need to hold down keys like the
Shift, Control and Alt. This is part of Windows7 Ease of Access Center. I
am not sure if the Insert key is included in "Sticky Keys", so I'm not sure
if it will help with executing JAWS commands. Here is a link to info on how
to turn on "Sticky Keys":

Dragon Naturally Speaking speech to text software is an option, but if using
it with JAWS it used to be that you had to use an additional piece of
software call J-Say. At one time only the Professional version of Dragon
worked with J-Say and JAWS. J-Say allowed JAWS and Dragon to play nicely
together. To be honest with you, Dragon is not for everyone.

There used to be a way to access a "half-QWERTTY" keyboard and other
keyboard layouts within Microsoft Windows. Here is a link to some
information, but there is a chance that it is outdated.

There are a variety of alternative keyboards available. As far as I know
there should not be any problem using JAWS with any of these keyboards
described below. Just make sure that there is an Insert key.

There are "half QWERTY" keyboards. You can read about one option,

Matias Half Keyboard & Half-QWERTY 508 Keyboard

Another one handed keyboard is the BAT keyboard. Here is some info from the
web, followed by the URL for more info.

Infogrip's BAT Keyboard is a one-handed, compact input device that
replicates all the functions of a full-size keyboard, but with greater
efficiency and convenience. The BAT is easy to learn and use. Letters,
numbers, commands and macros are simple key combinations, "chords," that you
can master in no time. Best of all the BAT's unique ergonomic design reduces
hand strain and fatigue for greater comfort and productivity. The BAT is the
ultimate typing solution for persons with physical or visual impairments and

2017-02-14 Thread Annette Carr

Here is a link to info on how
to turn on "Sticky Keys":

http://www.nhs.uk/accessibilityhelp/Using-your-keyboard-one-handed-in-Window
s-7.html#content

Dragon Naturally Speaking speech to text software is an option, but if using
it with JAWS it used to be that you had to use an additional piece of
software call J-Say. At one time only the Professional version of Dragon
worked with J-Say and JAWS. J-Say allowed JAWS and Dragon to play nicely
together. To be honest with you, Dragon is not for everyone.

There used to be a way to access a "half-QWERTTY" keyboard and other
keyboard layouts within Microsoft Windows. Here is a link to some
information, but there is a chance that it is outdated.

https://www.microsoft.com/enable/products/altkeyboard.aspx

There are a variety of alternative keyboards available. As far as I know
there should not be any problem using JAWS with any of these keyboards
described below. Just make sure that there is an Insert key.

There are "half QWERTY" keyboards. You can read about one option,

Matias Half Keyboard & Half-QWERTY 508 Keyboard

http://www.matias.ca/halfkeyboard/index.php?refID=7

Another one handed keyboard is the BAT keyboard. Here is some info from the
web, followed by the URL for more info.

Infogrip's BAT Keyboard is a one-handed, compact input device that
replicates all the functions of a full-size keyboard, but with greater
efficiency and convenience. The BAT is easy to learn and use. Letters,
numbers, commands and macros are simple key combinations, "chords," that you
can master in no time. Best of all the BAT's unique ergonomic design reduces
hand strain and fatigue for greater comfort and productivity. The BAT is the
ultimate typing solution for persons with physical or visual impairments and
is proven to increase productivity when used with graphic or desktop
publishing software.

Ever since I experimented with the Office keyboard, JAWS keeps verbalizing
the clipboard's content everywhere I go. Say I open an email and set it up
for reply, I leave the message, return to the edit field, and all JAWS will
do is read the clipboard. The workaround is to alt-enter out of the email
and alt-enter back in, although who knows why that works. However, it's a
nuisance, and it happens in other contexts as well, interfering with my
work.

This afternoon I did a JAWS repair, but it made no difference.

I've unchecked every item in the Office clipboard dialog. Again, no
difference.

Any ideas?

but it is not grouped with the rest of the tracks from that CD. I've

iTunes is driving me crazy. I am trying to add new content to my iTunes

same thing for navigating, and other times they do not. When I land on most
buttons, JAWS announces to use the Space Bar to select, but I find that if
it is going to let me select it, I will have to use the Enter key.

I thought that when you selected Add to Library from the File Menu iTunes
would go out and find any new content, i.e. MP3's on your hard drive and add
them to the iTunes folder, and to the iTunes library. This is not
happening. I've even tried pasting the new MP3 files in the iTunes folder
and then going through what I think are the steps for adding them to the
iTunes library, and they still do not show up. I am selecting Add to
Library, and then in the dialog box that pops up I am thinking that I am
selecting one of the items in the list, and I do hear the iTunes sound that
usually indicates it is finished.

Can anyone help me with this?

Hi Mr. Ed,

The drop down list we are discussing references the drop down lists you can
set up in cells with in your spreadsheet. They allow for consistent and
faster entry of data.

Personally, I do not like the Virtual Ribbon. It causes confusion with the
Help Desk at work, and when I am working with co-workers and family members.
I felt that it was worth investing the time to learn the MS Ribbon system

Do you have Virtual ribbons in menus check in the jaws wizard. By having

you can arrow across and then arrow down the list in the menus.
To check and see if you have this checked go to the help menu in Jaws then
to the wizard. I think it is about the third or fourth page where you will
find the box to check virtual ribbon on in menus. Give this a try and see if
this helps your issue.

Hi,

The problem of JAWS not reading the items in an Excel spreadsheet drop down
list has been a long-standing intermittent problem for me. I use Excel on 2
different computers and it happens on one more than the other. I am using
Windows7 on both machines, and JAWS versions 16 and 17 on both machines.
Sometimes JAWS will only announce the current item that is selected when you
open the list and nothing else. Other times nothing is read from the list.

Although I have never found a fix, you can try the following:

Make sure the window is maximized.

Use Insert+Escape to refresh the screen.

Alt+Tab away from Excel and then go back.

Close Excel and re-open it.

If you know the contents of the list, you should be able to start typing
your selection and Excel should complete it for you. Pressing enter will
select it. Be aware, sometimes this technique works intermittently.

If you find a fix, please post.

Annette,
Try this:
Reading column lines:
If you use smart navigation with set to tables, down arrow will go down the
current column. right arrow will go to the next column to the right where up
and down should just read that specific column.

If you don't use smart navigation, hold ctrl and alt keys as you use the
arrows up and down to go up or down the current column, left and right go
left or right to the previous or next column.

HTH,
Jorge

Hello All,

I have to read a MS-Word 2010 document that has been formatted with text
columns. It is driving me crazy that as I move through the document, I am
unable to follow the text. I have to gather specific information throughout
the document, so using insert Down arrow is not ideal to use right now. Are
there commands for navigating text columns? I may resort to reformatting
the document by removing the column setting.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Excel

2016-12-23 Thread Annette Carr

HTH,
Annette

Re: [JAWS-Users] Another Excel question

2016-12-16 Thread Annette Carr
Hi Adam,

You can copy the formula and paste it in as many of the cells in that
column. As long as the relationship between the cell with the formula and
the cells the formula is using to perform the calculation stay the same you
will be fine.

So if you have a formula in f2 that adds the values of cells a2, b2, c2, d2
and e2, no matter where you move the cell with the formula, it will always
add up the values from the 5 cells to the left of it.

If you use the $ sign before any column or row reference in your formula,
then they will not change when you paste the formula into another cell.

Hello.

Thank you to everyone who has shared information relating to my question
about copying columns in Excel. I now have a different question which I
can't find an answer for online.

Is it possible to copy a formula so that its references are relative to
where it is placed? A simple example would be if I had a formula in C1 so I
could add together A1 and B1 but then wanted to repeat this for all rows to
20. I don't really want to keep typing out the same formula 20 tyimes.

Many thanks,

Hi Annette,

Hope you & yours had a lovely Thanksgiving. This isn't an answer to your
question, but how to stop that annoying message.

While in Word, if you go to Tools, Options, Advanced tab there is a checkbox
that you can uncheck, prompt before saving normal template. If you uncheck
this checkbox, any changes to the normal template will be saved
automatically without bringing up that dialogue. While on the Advance Tab,
Alt + O, is the keystroke that will get you there more quickly. Note: you
may have to invoke the Alt + O keystroke more than once to get you there.
Then, tab to okay, press the spacebar to save your changes & close options.

Take care.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Signatures in Outlook

2016-11-24 Thread Annette Carr
Hi Adam,

I do not know if there is a better way to do this, but here is what I do
when I want to create a signature in Outlook, and how I manage them.

I either open a new e-mail message or a Word doc.

Type in all of the information I want to include in my signature. This
includes contact information and any links to websites.

I then proof read, spell check and run JAWS text analyzer.

Once everything is how I want it, I open the signature editor in Outlook.

Go back to the source of my new signature, and copy the entire thing.

Go back to the signature editor, paste the contents of my new signature in
to the appropriate edit box, and adjust all necessary setting for that
signature.

At work I have multiple signatures. My most used is the general/long
signature which is set to be automatically added to all messages that I
create. The second most used signature is what I call the "Short"
signature. This contains just my basic contact information and is
automatically added to all replies and messages that I forward. I have a
few other signatures that pertain to specific projects that I am assigned
to, and I have to add these manually after deleting the automatically added
signature.

Currently when I initiate an e-mail from a document in Word or Excel, there
is not a signature automatically being added to the outgoing message. I
have not had time to look into whether there is a setting that will change
this, so I manually add the desired signature.

HTH,
Annette

Tom, I typically encounter this problem when the message consists of tables.
Regardless, my workaround is:

select and copy the entire message not with control-a,-but by placing focus
at the top of the message and pressing shift-control-end.
Paste the copied text into Notepad,
Select and copy that result with control-a, Paste the result into an empty
Word file.
Then I search for the passage I want and go from there.

If I paste from the email to Word, the confusing table format is retained.
As I write, I'm wondering if I've tried the control-alt-v paste special
method to paste as unformatted text. You might try that in order to skip the
Notepad step.

In many instances, the text I select does not correspond to what I later

I have tried routing the PC cursor to the Jaws cursor, but this does not
solve the issue.

The only way I can get the copied and pasted text to correspond to the

I believe this is a Jaws issue.

I'm using Windows 7 and Jaws 17 with Outlook 2016 here.

Any assistance would be appreciated.

Hi,

Agree, PowerPoint as a stand-a-lone product is quite usable with JAWS. As
Farfar Dave stated, you will have to get used to working with it as some of
it is not as intuitive as one would expect with the Microsoft Office
products. Not only do I use it for presentations, but I've also used it to
create announcement flyers. With practice you can learn how to insert
graphics, position them and label them. Now using PowerPoint with Go To

graphic representation.

PowerPoint is fine, once you get used to using JAWS with it. Go to the FS

you won't be frustrated.

Hi,

I do not yet have Outlook 2016, but here are some things you can try.

When in your list of messages in your in box, navigate to the invite you
want to Accept, Decline or mark Tentative, press your applications key and
see if these 3 features exist in that menu.

You can also try the above when you have the invite open.

When the invite is open, explore the ribbon and the various submenus to see
if these 3 actions are available somewhere.

When you find out what works, can you post it on the list? In the next
couple of months my employer is moving to OfficePro2016 and this will be
something I will need to do on a daily basis.

Re: [JAWS-Users] How To Stop Auto-numbering In Outlook 2016

2016-10-22 Thread Annette Carr
Hi Tom,

I do not know how to do this in 2016, but in 2010 Alt, H, U opens the
bullets submenu and you would use your arrow keys to get to "None". I
cannot remember the command for getting to the Numbers submenu, but in 2010
it is the item to the right of Bullets on the ribbon. Maybe someone can
come up with the short cut. For some reason the short cut keys that are
being announced when I check out my ribbon are not making sense.

Another idea is to see if your applications key brings up a context menu
that offers a choice for turning off the numbering.

HTH,
Annette

Hello, everyone.

How exactly does one stop auto-numbering when composing e-mails with Outlook
2016?

I used to be able to stop this feature in Outlook 2010 by simply hitting
"enter" several times between list items, but this doesn't seem to work in
Outlook 2016.

It is very anoying, especially when auto-numbering is not desired!

Re: [JAWS-Users] regarding the recent drop in list traffic

2016-10-12 Thread Annette Carr
Hi David,

In my opinion, this list is not close to have run its course. I think that
right now we are in a smooth sailing period with JAWS and most of the commonly
used applications and no one is running into major issues. Of course you have
faced the problem with mail compatibility, so I am not sure how many users that
has impacted. I do think as soon as JAWS18 officially hits the streets there
will be an increase in traffic, as well as when updates to commonly used
products become available.

I personally am very appreciative of the hard work and effort you and the team
put into keeping this list up and running. I've learned a lot, and try to pay
it back by contributing whenever possible. This list fills a gap that is not
able to be filled by FS/VFO Technical Support on many levels. Please no one
take that as a slam to FS/VFO.

Thank you David & Team!

I am a bit concerned over the significant drop in list traffic over the past
several weeks. Granted Microsoft has blocked out this domain and earlier this
year road runner did the same thing. Also in the past com cast and others have
done the same.

It might be possible that the list has run its’ course. It is 11 years old this
week as a matter of fact which I find hard to believe myself.

Let’s see how things go for a while before any major decisions are made so
don’t anybody panic at this point. I am just expressing my concern about the
way things have dropped off so much. It had to happen sooner or later. The fact
is I have no idea how long the average email list stays in business, I suppose
that would be an interesting study.

Now to sit back and see what kind of response this message generates.

True, but the method Jorge posted is much simpler: alt-f, I, e. If that
doesn't work, press alt before f, then I, e. No need for all that tabbing.

I use this method and it's reliable.

1. Press the Alt key to activate the menu options.

2. Down arrow to the Info option. This sometimes passes by and you
might have to go back up to it.

3. Tab three times till you hear Protected View.

4. Press Spacebar and then exit the menu options.

That usually works and it doesn't change the way Word handles all files.
Some of them you might not want unprotected.

Re: [JAWS-Users] deactivating Protected View, a short and sweet solution

2016-10-08 Thread Annette Carr
When using MS-Word2010, as I do not know if this works in newer versions of
Office here is what I do to remove Protected view from the current document
I am viewing.

Use Alt+f to open the File Menu

Use either up or down arrow to navigate to Information. It should be near
the top, but for some odd reason JAWS does not always catch it. When you
find it, use Right arrow to open the submenu.

Use Down arrow until you hear Enable Editing. You may have to listen
carefully as sometimes this phrase is caught up in a bunch of other stuff
JAWS is rattling off. If you miss it, use your Up arrow to move back up to
it. Press Enter once you find it.

You are placed back in your document and you can navigate and edit normally
in most cases. I say in most cases because if you had to turn off Protected
Mode, this means that the document was sent to you. So depending on what
the person did to create the document will determine what you are faced with
at this next point.

HTH,
Annette

So far I've.

Even totally reinstalled the screen reader afresh.

Any suggestions or tips before contacting VFO support?

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Tables in MS Word 2013

Hi everyone,

I am using JAWS 16 with Windows 10 in my workplace. We have been given a
word document containing a single table for us to complete each month. When
I press Insert F1 to get the information about the table JAWS announces it
is a simple table with 7 columns and 45 rows.

The problem is that if I use table reading commands, either Control + Alt +
an arrow key or layered commands, JAWS seems to get stuck in certain
columns and won't move across the row. So, for example, I begin by moving
down the first column, no problems there. Then I decide I want to move
across a given row. When I press Control Alt right arrow JAWS announces that
I am at the end of the row. However, if I press TAB it moves me to the next
column. Again, if I try to move using my table commands I am told I am at
the end of the row. Press TAB and I am moved to the next column.

I am assuming this has something to do with the way the table has been set
up or formatted, I have never come across it anywhere but at work. Any
suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

Kellie

I do not use a braille display and it does happen randomly. Like you I

However, like I said in my previous post, turning off the mouse pad and

All,

I have used Kurzweil 1000 to OCR a PDF document and make it an RTF file. I
am reading that RTF file in MS Word. For some reason, JAAWS will read the
word at the end of a line combined with the word at the beginning of the
next line. The two words will sound like one word.
So, just as an example, if the words "of" and "the" are separated by a line
break, then JAWS will read the word as "ofthe". This seems to be a problem
with only RTF files of this kind, but I'm not sure what's causing it.
Unfortunately I do need these documents to be in RTF, as otherwise for
whatever reason the footnotes will not be properly converted.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws not recognizing blank lines in Word

2016-07-18 Thread Annette Carr
Hi Norma,

Do you know if this blank line that you are not detecting is only occurring
between paragraphs? If so, then there is a setting that is telling Word to
either automatically insert an extra blank line after a hard Return, or the
setting might have something to do with the height of that blank line
between paragraphs.

I can never remember where these changes reside, so you can start by looking
in places like the paragraph settings, or in the style settings.

Good Luck! These things drive me crazy!

Hi list,

I'm using Word 2010 with Jaws 16.0.4468. I had a sighted person proofread a
document and they are seeing blank lines in the document which I cannot
detect using Jaws. For example, with Jaws I read

This is line 5 of the document.
This is line 6 of the page.

So, of course, I assume there is no blank line between the 2 lines of text.
But the sighted person says there is a blank line there, that is what he
sees.

Forgive my frustration, but how in the hell am I supposed to create
documents like this? I hope this is just a setting I need to adjust, but it
seems so fundamental that a mere setting wouldn't cover something so
critical to composition.

I'm hoping someone can enlighten me. Meanwhile, I'm off for a mental health
break. Or breakdown, whatever comes first.

Thanks,
Norma

Then I'm surprised. I would not expect there to be any difference in how
JAWS 17 offers reading options between Excel 2007 and Excel 2010. I found
the cell verbosity toggle under Reading Options. Do you see that in the
Quick Settings list? Again, this is being access via Insert+V when Excel is
the program with focus.

Hi Dave C,

Under Cell Verbosity, I'm not seeing an option for coordinates + contents.
I'm using some flavor of JAWS17, Excel 2010 and Windows7. When Mario posted
the question yesterday, that is where I looked as well, and was surprised to

Mike, the options you suggested have no effect on the announcement of
cells in Excel. I did find out on a cell, if I press control+alt+numpad
5, JAWS announces the coordinate followed by it's contents. but I want
JAWS to automatically announce this way as I move to different cells.

Hi Mario,

Try the following:
1. With Excel open open the Settings Center, Insert + 6, on the number row.
2. Arrow down to, Text Processing, right arrow to open, down arrow to,
General, & right arrow to open.
3. Arrow down to the following, & tab 1 time on each of the below
options to
get an explanation of each:
Say Item State 1st, This is checked by default.

Say Windows Type 1st

Say Window State 1st

I haven't played with these settings, but I think this might be where you

e.g. c2, blank, instead of blank, c2.
I've tried looking thru the quick settings, and in the Reading Options,
there is Cell Verbosity but the only choices are either Content +

Unfortunately, I don't have an answer for how you do it in this case. I've

folders within the PST, I'm wondering if it is possible to mass-produce a

I might accomplish this beside creating each new folder one by one?

When performing a search in word, there was a tip to find the next

think of it. Let me go right the word haha hahaha hahaha and see if it will

Re: [JAWS-Users] How To Stop Jaws From Saying Vertical Tab

2016-06-01 Thread Annette Carr
The vertical tab is not punctuation. It is more like a formatting notation.
I'm yet to figure out the difference between a vertical tab and a hard
return, and why is the vertical tab sometimes announced by JAWS17 and other
times it is not. I cannot confirm if this is a feature of JAWS17, or some
change in Microsoft.

The only place where the announcement of the vertical tab behavior has been
consistent has been in PowerPoint 2010. When tabbing from object to object
on a slide in design mode, if there is a hard return at the end of text,
JAWS will only announce the vertical tab when you first tab to that object.
Once you press Enter to edit the contents of that object, the vertical tab
is no longer announced.

Hi Tom,

I do not know if you can make Office2016 look like Office 2010, but here is
some food for thought. If it is possible to make this change, it will make
it easier for you now. However, if you do collaborative work with
co-workers at your computer, or if someone is helping you, they will not be
able to successfully work with you as they will have made the transition to
2016 and you will have not. Of course if you do not find yourself in either
of these situations, then finding a way to make 2016 feel like 2010 might be
the best option for you.

I can't remember if I asked you this before, so please forgive me if I did.

Do you know of any way that you can make Microsoft Word 2016 under Office
365 look and act like Microsoft Word 2010?

I've gotten used to that layout over the last few years, and would like to
continue it if possible.

Thank you!

Hi Tom,
You know outlook already so I don't think you will have any trouble using
it.
Now word 2016 has a new interface when you open it. There is a grid of form
layouts, you can choose from. While in this start page, you can press ALT+F,
to get a list of documents on your computer. At the bottom of this list, is
a see more document link. Pressing enter on any of your documents opens them
in word 2016. If you don't wish to use this start page, you can turn it off
under the word settings.
I am personally having no issues right now. Using Jaws 17 on two W-10
computers with Office 365.

For a number of reasons which I won't bother you with here, I too am about
to take the plunge into Office 365.

My University has used it for the past year or so, and I've very
successfully used Outlook e-mail as well, so I'm going to download and
install it onto my personal computer.

Your experience thus far is encouraging, since it seems that you are having
no major accessibility issues.

If there is something I should be aware of when getting things installed and
set up, please let me know. I'm not the most computer savy person in the

I'm using Windows 7 with Jaws 16 here.

HTH,
Annette

All went very smoothly with Jaws 17. What all do you get with Office 365?

Word, Excel, Outlook, power point, and so on for all the 2016 versions of
these programs. You also get 1 TB of OneDrive storage. You get 60 free
minutes of skype per month to call land lines. You get full technical
support 24/7. You get 5 licenses for computers, other licenses for iPhones,
iPads, and also for android devices.

All for either $9.99 per month, or $99.99 per year.

I have spent most of today setting up the laptop and setting up email
accounts in outlook 2016.

All is working great. See you can teach an old dog like me new tricks! Or in
this case, new programs.

God bless.

Hi Everyone,

I have a person that uses Jaws and she just purchased a new wireless
Logitech keyboard. I also purchase one and it has a function key where the
application key is located. When you press that key it does not bring up the
application menu. Does anyone know how a person would change something on
the Logitech keyboard to make the function key work like the application key
when press?

Ed

Hi Jim,

Thank you for providing the information on Office365 as well as your
experiences with it. Keep us posted on the accessibility of setting up the
various aspects of your account on the computer and any mobile devices you
are using.

Do you know if you have to have the same e-mail account associated with all
5 computer installations and the various mobile devices? Are you limited to
only storing your data in their cloud, or can you limit the cloud storage to
only the files that you want to share between devices, and then store the
rest of your files on your local computer?

Thanks,
Annette

Insert+F will only do you some good if you know where to look. I can't
imagine the time it will take to use that strategy to find the text. Does
anyone know if it is possible to do a search and look for an attribute such
as the background or foreground color?

Try insert F (the font). Most times it would read as bolded or highlight.
