[JAWS-Users] Word 13 and Read Only Mode on External Hard Drive

2018-07-18 Thread jyandt.martin
Afternoon all.

Using JAWS 2018, Word 13 and Windows 10 on a Dell laptop.

I have had this problem for some time now. Whenever I open a Word document on
my external hard drive, I get a message that JAWS does not support read only
mode. I am given some instructions for correcting this, but after closing the
message, I cannot activate the ribbons/menu bar. And then I cannot get JAWS to
read subject lines in my inbox of WLM. So, I have to close all programs and
restart my computer. And if that were not enough, I get this message for
“creating hard link”.
Anybody out there ever have this problem, and if so, what is the fix? Any
ideas/suggestions will be deeply appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I haven't, but missing or corrupt dlls can happen with various programme
instalations from time to time.

This is one reason why it is helpful to have two or more screen-readers on

mail is similar.

Go to programs and features and arrow down, or use first letter navigation,
to windows esentials. Go to the context menue and you should find something
like uninstall/change, press enter. You will find buttons using tab, and
there will be one that says repair.

I hope this helps.

Ok. I just did this about a month ago for my old Office 2010 instalation,
because it would actually not let me uninstall it until I had performed a
repair as something was broken. I'm now looking at Office 2016 in control
panel, and I do not see a repair option. I discovered though that I can do
this through the "modify" button in the settings app. Unfortunate as I much
prefer control panel, but it seems Microsoft considers the settings app to
be priority now and is trying to get people to use that for most things. The
control panel/settings dichotomy is one of the most hilarious things about
Windows 10, which is an oS I generally do like.

However, you might have this option in Control panel, especially as you are
using an older version of Office. , so I'll try and tell you what I did. No
guarantees that this won't be slightly different for your experience, but
try this:

Hit windows key + r to open the run dialog box.
Type "control" (without quotes obviously) and hit enter
Control panel will open.
Hit "p" three times or so, and "programs and features" will be announced.
Hit enter.

Now you can use first letter navigation to get to your "microsoft office".
Hit the applications key and you should see, at the very least, "uninstall"
and "change". Maybe there will also be a "repair" option there. If not, try
"change" and see what happens. Once you pick an option from that menu,
remember that the user account control box will likely open and you will
have to hit alt-y to click "yes".

If you have to do this through the settings app instead, as I now apparently
do, the steps will be a bit different. The way I get there is to hit windows
key to open the search box, and type "apps". You should hear "apps and
features" if you do this. You can hit enter there. You'll see a list of
installed stuff. Unfortunately these pesky new Windows apps won't let you
use first letter navigation, so you'll just have to use your arrow keys
and/or page down until you get to what you want, or you can type "office"
into the search box, which will probably also work.

Read this page for more help with this.
https://support.office.com/en-us/article/Repair-an-Office-application-7821d4b6-7c1d-4205-aa0e-a6b40c5bb88b

I sympathise if you find this method a little annoying; I personally wish
Microsoft just kept everything in control panel, but that's just not the way
it's going.

No idea really. But maybe try doing a repair of your office instalation from

corruption of Office. Just let the repair run while you do other things; it
can take several minutes. If it doesn't fix the problem, try searching

What happens when you press enter on the file(s?) Does the "open with"
dialogue open?

Windows 10 treats zip files as folders. So when you press enter, you should
actually be inside the zip archive and able to view and even work with the
individual files.

The options in the context menu will probably say "extract", which is what
you want to do if you want to dump all the files from the zip archive into
an actual folder on your system.

Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Find Function in MS Word 13

Hi, Jerry.

Dave and Rebecca have posted the JAWS alternative that works fine in most
instances. However, the MS find function can be helpful in other ways, so
I'd like to try to suggest what may be going wrong for you.

With JAWS find (JAWS key+control+f), you can only search for whole words. So
if you remembered the word you wanted was a verb such as "talk," but not
whether it was talked, talking, etc., you'd have to search over and over
until you landed on the place you were searching for. MS find isn't limited
to words; you can also search for partial words, etc.

Another nice feature of the MS search function is that it will tell you how
many instances of your search string appear in the document, and also which
one you're focused on. JAWS find does none of that.

Finally, with MS find you can search for paragraph breaks, tabs and other
useful targets. Again, you can't do any of this with JAWS find.

In my experience, the first time I open an MS find, nothing happens. I press
control-f, type in my search string, then press enter. Nothing. However, I
then press control-f again and JAWS verbalizes the search string I just
typed. Now I press enter, and I'm taken to the first instance of that
string.

Here, take care to listen on pressing that enter key. You will be given the
context, such as the entire line where the result appears. You'll also be
told to click on "Next" for the next instance. If you've arrived where you
want to be, press escape to exit the find function. If you're looking for a
different instance, press the spacebar.

If you move on to the next instance, you're now told the number of examples
of this string in the document and which of those instances you're focused
on, as well as the current context.

The MS find function isn't completely consistent. For example, sometimes it
commences a search the first time I do the find command, sometimes not. It
took me some getting used to, and like Rebecca and Dave, I most often use
JAWS find. but learning how to work with MS find was well worth the trouble.

Howdy Jerry,

Do you have Fast Start enabled? If this is enabled then when you shut your
computer down it doesn't really shut down, but it goes into a hibernated
state that allows the computer to wake-up & install updates, run security
scans, & whatever the Widows 10 system is supposed to do in this state.
These tasks are all scheduled and designed to do their thing when your
computer is not being used. But, if Fast Start is disabled it can't do
these scheduled tasks. So, in your case if Fast Start is not turned on in
can't wake-up to install the updates and you would have to do them manually.
If you have Fast Start enabled and the updates aren't being installed there
might be an error code message somewhere which explains why. if you do a
search using the error code number as your search criteria.

Hi Again All,

Okay, by doing the following Jaws will report the safe to remove message,
although not consistently. I knew I had a note about this somewhere because
this also happens in Widows 7, and this is how I fixed it:
1. Windows key + I, to open Settings, Navigate to Personalization, and press
enter.
2. Go to, Taskbar, press enter, tab to, Notification Area, Select which
icons appear on the taskbar Link, and press enter.
3. Tab to, Windows host process (Rundll32) Button, press the spacebar to
check this option, and you should now hear Jaws report it's safe to
remove after pressing enter on a drive from the Safely Remove Hardware
icon.

Please let me know if the steps work for anyone else.

equation, and superscript the specific number. Sometimes you have to get a
little creative; even when using JAWS.

Hi, Fernando. Your instructions are absolutely correct. The only difference
is that the English version gives "1st" as the ordinal example. I had it
checked already, and it seems to be working for me.

My confusion arose because I couldn't get JAWS to confirm that superscript
letters were, in fact, superscript. As Rebecca posted, the problem arises
from VFO's decision to remove superscript and subscript from the classic
speech and sounds scheme. Strangely, although I've restored them to my
default speech and sounds scheme, JAWS is still not verbalizing either
format when I move character by character. I have to press JAWS key-f, which
works for me but not for Rebecca. Her solution is Windows key-alt-I, which
at least takes you up to the point where the format changes. So does Text
Analyzer, but on my system, TA just verbalizes a change in format without
specifying what that format is.

Astounding that JAWS users have to put so much thought and work into a
detail like this.

Hi Adrian,

You were told nice alternatives to make JAWS report superscript and
subscript, so it makes no sense I repeat many things others already said.
Regarding Word automatically not changing ordinals, this is controlled by
the AutoFormat As You Type auto-correct options. These options are
per-program basis, so it is normal it is enabled in Outlook and disabled in
Word.

To enable this in Word, go to the File tab, Word Options.
In the Categories list box, choose Proofing and tab to the Auto-Correct
Options.
In the dialog opened by this button, press CTRL+TAB until you reach the
AutoFormat As You Type page. Then tab to a checkbox like Ordinals (1th) with
Superscript and press SPACE BAR to check this. I can't give you the exact
name of this checkbox, since many options of this tab have language-specific
names. In the case of ordinals, in Spanish there are both two specific
symbols and, in practice, many people incorrectly use suffixes like “do”,
“ra”, etc.

Hope it helps!

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Superscript in Word 2016

Hi. In previous versions of Word, superscript would be verbalized when I
moved character by character. also, when I typed a number such as 14th, Word
would automatically make the "th" superscript. Neither is happening with
Word 2016 and the current release of JAWS 2018. Even more disconcerting, a
sighted assistant tells me that sometimes the "th" or "nd" is superscript,
sometimes not, probably because I'm working in a document created in an
earlier version of Word.

Can anyone suggest how:

 1. To get Word to make "th" and "nd" in numbers like 14th and 2nd
automatically appear as superscript?
 2. To get JAWS to report superscript, and also subscript, in Word
documents? I looked at the intermediate settings for anything that might
help, but nothing leapt out.

Note: Superscript is handled fine in Outlook 2016, which I have tethered to
Word 2016.

Thanks.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Multiple JAWS versions

2018-05-15 Thread jyandt.martin

Yes. I could not get the assessment site to verify my jaws.

The whole story is, I was selected for a job position as a braille
transcriber. But before the interview can happen, I need to take 3
evaluation tests for typing, excel, and Word. So after clicking the box
indicating I use a screen reader, the site needed to verify my software.
Unfortunately, the verification gets interrupted due to a conflict. The
assessment site is overseen by IBM, and I contacted them yesterday. They
informed me that the site was not compatible with JAWS 2018, and to go back
to a recent version. So, after initializing version 17, the same thing
happened.

So, that is it in a nutshell. Thanks.

Hey!

I Also am using The latest version of Windows 10 with the latest version of
JAWS 2018. This logon problem has been with me right from my first
installation of Windows 10.
I have discussed this problem with FS Support on more than 1 occasion.

Again, I had a chat with JAWS support about the logon problem 2 days ago.
He told me that is my particular machine that is having the problem. He
said that it is not wide-spread. He told me to contact the Microsoft
Accessibility Help Desk. I haven't had time to contact them yet.

The problem for me is really hit and miss. Most of the time I don't hear
anything when my machine boots up. Some times JAWS starts and tells me the
focus has been lost. Some times, the Windows sound is heard. Most of the
time it is not.

When I am stuck, I will hit Insert+F4 to unload JAWS, press Escape to cancel
it, hit Alt+Tab, hit Enter, go into Touch Cursor mode, find the Password
field, type my password, find the Sign-in button and press enter. Rather a
long process just to logon.

Hi folks! This issue is an oldy but a goody, and one that hasn't been fixed
for me yet.

I have two windows 10 computers, and many times JAWS will not say anything
at the log-on screen indicating that I can type the password. Sometimes I
can press Control plus Alt plus Delete, and here the prompt to type my
password. Sometimes, I have to load narrator to find where to put in the
password. The behavior is inconsistent at best.

I wanted to post this to the list, and see if there is anything I can do to
make JAWS work better in this situation. Is there a setting that I need to
check, either in Windows or in JAWS? Any help would be appreciated.

More likely that the web site of those favorites has changed, or are
temporarily overloaded with traffic. Have you tried them after a reboot?

Morning all.
Using JAWS 2018, Windows 10 and IE 11.30, I noticed that some of my
favorites will not open when previously, they worked before. Could this be
due to an update to the Windows OS? Thanks.

Even when you should be able to find Outlook with Start menu search box,
there's a shortcut to it in the Microsoft Office 2013 group or sub menu in
All Apps list on Start menu.
If you don’t have Outlook, either you decided to make it unavailable during
installation, or you have an Office 2013 edition which doesn't have Outlook.

Hope it helps!

Hi,

Outlook is not free, but a part of Office editions higher than home ones. It
works on any Windows version in which you can install an Office version
compatible with the running Windows version.
Outlook Express was the e-mail and newsgroup client included with IE in
Windows XP and earlier. It was free. It is available for downloads in some
websites, but be aware that running this client on Windows later than XP is
not officially supported by Microsoft.
Windows 10 includes a free client called Mail, but it is very basic even
compared with the old Microsoft free alternatives Outlook Express, Windows
Mail included in Vista and Windows Live Mail included with the Windows Live
Essentials suite, together with other stuff like Windows Live Messenger,
Writter, SkyDrive (currently OneDrive), etc.
I strongly recommend you to install Office and use Microsoft Outlook, which
is full featured, customizable and very accessible.

Hi Jerry,

Open the Start menu & open the Programs / All Programs folder. Arrow
through this folder to see if you have a sub-folder called Microsoft Office
Tools, if so, press enter or right arrow to open. Now poke around in here
to see if you have Outlook. Another way to check is to open the root of the
C / operating system drive, & the easy way to do this is to press, Windows
key + R, to open the Run dialog. Type a single, backslash, & press enter.
Depending on if your Office version is 32 or 64 bit will depend on which
folder it will be located in. If your Office version is 32 bit, it'll be
located in the Program Files X86 folder, & if it's 64 bit, it'll be in the
Program Files folder. Now just irritate the hell out of you, here's another
way! LOL
Open Programs & Features from the control panel, & navigate through the
installed list of programs to see if Outlook is installed. You can also do
a search for, add or remove programs, from the search box to see if it's
there.

Take care. Mike. Go Dodgers!

Ok, you have other issues here too, if you can't connect to your home
internet.
I haven't looked at your previous messages, but if you are having internet
connection issues, I'll lay dollars to doughnuts that you are using Windows
7.

There are glitches in the Windows 7 with many wifi cards which sometimes
cause them not to connect, particularly to secured WPA networks.

I've dealt with this problem fairly often on my Win 7 PC.

If this might be your issue, send a message back, and I'll respond privately
with a number of steps that I'm aware of that might solve your problem.
These aren't Jaws-related, of course.

I use Winamp for this too. There is a random button in the playlist editor.
I don't think there's a convenient shortcut for it by default. But yes, it's
there. When I took a brief look last time when I had version 2.2.6 or
something, I could not get jAWS to find it, however. I will try again with
3.01 and see what happens. The reason I didn't fuss about this at the time
(I like making random playlists too) is that I really only use VLC for
videos. Of course it's your choice, and it may make a difference to you that
VLC is still being updated. However, most new file formats are video, not
audio, formats. Another thing I value winamp over VLC for audio playback for
is the equalizer. VLC has one, but it's much less user friendly ... it's
very difficult to save your own settings. SO if you care about that, you
might want to consider this. However, for video playback, VLC simply can't
be beat. It's fast and extremely versatile. There's a lot of stuff under the
hood.

Some may remember I made several posts about how great this player was, but
that certain things, like the advanced preferences dialog, were difficult to
use with a screen-reader. I just want to report that I have installed the
last stable build, 3.01 I believe, and not only does the player seem at
least twice as fast to load on my Windows 10 64 bit machine, but the
preferences screen is reading properly with JAWS. The advanced preferences
now show as a tree view, and so far I no longer have to hit space on a
checkbox to even hear whether it is a checkbox or not. So, good news for
video users.

HI Jerry.

Do you have Microsoft Word? If so, I suggest importing the page into that
programme, instead of trying to print from Internet Explorer. Not only will
you see exactly how much paper your document will take up on the status
line, but you can make adjustments to fonts and formatting to make it fit
exactly as you want it to, or at least as near as you can.

the internet can't provide you with any answers on how to make this program
work for you, it might just be best to move on to a different piece of
software.

Hi jerry.

Off-hand, I don't know what steps to take exactly, but I would definitely
not write this off as a useless proposition. You can get old drivers for
almost anything, and provided the thing did work with Windows 10 at some
point, it should still work now. It would be extremely crappy of Microsoft
to suddenly stop supporting hardware altogether. There's usually a way to
make it work.

Have you tried going to Toshiba support?

I should add that, if what you're actually trying to determine is whether a
picture is oriented correctly on your screen or is turned sideways or
something, the only thing that will really help you is a pair of eyes. But,
provided everything is correct, determining the pic's dimensions should
help you figure what kind of pic it is.

Now, maybe if you want to go further with this, you could explain what you
are trying to do? Paste a picture into a document you are creating, I think
you implied?

Hey jerry.

I've found two ways to get picture dimensions from a file as of today.
One is through file properties, in the details tab. This is metadata, so
this is recorded by whatever app or camera took the photo, and not something
determined by your computer. You should look for "dimensions" in the list
box.

The other way is indeed through the photos app. I do not know if this is
also metadata or whether the app performs some kind of analysis on the
picture to determine dimensions. You want the "file information" button.
Because the photos app is a modern app, the JAWS cursor will not work, I
think. So you will need to use the touch cursor, or simply hit jaws key+b to
read the entire text of the window, which will include the "file
information" that appears when you hit the button.

Well, ok, I guess you can. You would need to calculate the picture's aspect
ratio. You can do this by getting the number of pixels, width vs height of
picture. People have written quick java and python scripts to do this. But
this is beyond the scope of my experience. It seems to me that, if you don't
work with many photos, you could just figure this out in your head. You
would need to get the pixels in properties or file information (windows 10
photos app) and calculate the ratio of width to height. I tried to do this
just now by examining a whole bunch of pictures, and it dirned out that they
all had a ratio of 1:1, which means they are square, and not portrait or
landscape oriented. So, you'll just have to experiment. This isn't something
I know a ton about but it's interesting. Maybe this page will help you:
https://designshack.net/articles/layouts/understanding-and-working-with-aspe
ct-ratio/

I think greater picture analysis ability would be a good feature to
incorporate into screen-readers. Definitely on the right track with the new
OCR stuff, but sometimes we, as blind folks, still want to work with
pictures as pictures.

opened word docs, will this show up in the list? I am thinking not, as it is
not a word file, but I have been wrong on more than one occasion. I am
running JAWS 2018, Word 13 and Windows 10 on a Dell laptop. Thanks in

Evening folks.

Hi Jerry,

MWB is accessible, but how accessible is a matter of opinion! LOL It
requires a lot of tabbing, but with J2018 all the dialogue boxes will be
read correctly. Your best bet is to install it, & play around with it a
little When you open the program you'll hear the following as you tab.

Header My Account Button
Dashboard Tab checked
Scan Tab
Quarantine Tab
Reports Tab
Settings Tab
Tab Quick Tour Button

If you want any of the tabs above selected, press the spacebar on it, &
it'll become checked / selected. For example, if you check, Settings,
you'll have to tab through all the other tabs before you get to the Settings
options. If you wanted, Scans, then you spacebar it, & tab your but off &
you'll get to the options for scanning. Take a look at the program, & then
we'll go from there.
Take care. Mike. Sent from my iBarstool.

Afternoon all.
I am running JAWS 2018 and Windows 10 on a Dell laptop. After getting help
from the microsoft disability help desk, I was sent a link to a tutorial for
Windows Defender.
One of the recommendations was downloading MalWareBytes, as a supportive
software to Defender.
My question is, how accessible is this program? Is it as accessible as
Defender, which for the most part of my limited knowledge of it, is pretty
accessible.
Thanks.

already have. In the course of the conversation, they say the only thing
they need is the CVV code on your card. Bingo. You give it, and they

Yeah, it sounds like a scam. This is what they do now. I tried to go to a

I'm old-school and still dial peoples' phone numbers too. :D). A mysterious
electronic voice announced that my computer was sending out "virus reports"
and that my credit card was compromised, or some bs like that. It's so
bogus, but I've seen first-hand that it still scares people into calling the
number, or downloading the software, etc. I used to get calls on my old
landline claiming to be from "windows technical department", too, asserting
that my computer was sending out "virus" and "error" signals. I've looked
into this scam and it operates exactly as described in a previous message
here. Actually first they make you look at event viewer and a bunch of other
stuff in Windows and convince you there are problems. Next step: download
Team Viewer, so a "technician" can remotely operate your machine. Next step:
straight to PayPal.

Hello list,

The dump command (JAWSKey+WindowsKey+F4) will restart JAWS automatically
while it creates a dump file to show what was happening at the time of the
loss of speech. It would be potentially very helpful to contact the Support
department and offer the Dump File with an explanation of what you were
doing when it the loss of speech occurred and how often you are seeing this.

These issues are difficult to track down as they happen randomly and most
certainly have something to do with JAWS interacting with UIA from Windows.
We are making progress on this every day and appreciate your continued
feedback and support in tracking these down.

Eric

I think this is the "JAWS dump" keystroke referred to in the original post.
I did not think this keystroke automatically restarted JAWS? I'd better give
it a try. Usually I just kill JAWS with task manager, or nowadays, process
explorer, since task manager got ridiculously slow and basically unusable
lately.

Oh, it's not a conspiracy theory, it's the truth. If you ever root your
mobile phone, you might be dismayed to see the number of things that run in
the background, which are potential backdoors to discover all kinds of
things about you, your habits, your messages, contacts. These aren't spyware
or anything; the phone companies who sell you the phones put them in there.

Not to be a conspiracy theorist, but it seems that everyone wants to know
what everyone else is doing; whether it is microsoft, or apple, or whatever.

Hey Kimsan.

I came across this page after reading your message:
https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_10-performance-win
pc/server-execution-failed-with-windows-media-player/58a159d0-0e5a-475c-b3fa
-7adfa631b18d?auth=1

I did not read the whole thread, but it sure made it sound like fixing this
problem was more than it was worth. I would personally just use another
media player, like Winamp, Foobar or VlC. I don't see the point in messing
around with your user account or restore points just to be able to play a
bloody mp3. Still, you don't seem to be alone with this problem, so do some
more investigating online if you feel it's worth the effort. I know that's
not much help. I never liked Windows media Player and don't know why
Microsoft feels the need to connect to its silly network every time you want
to play something.

Hi,

Not sure if the same message will pop up if I use a different player but I'm
trying to listen to a goldwave tutorial mp3 and when I right click and have
it play in windows media player, I get the following message:

C:\Users\kimsan\Documents\random\goldwave tutorials\Goldwave With
Jaws\Goldwave With Jaws\2. Intermediate\average levels.mp3

C:\Users\kimsan\Documents\random\goldwave tutorials\Goldwave With
Jaws\Goldwave

With Jaws\2. Intermediate\average levels.mp3

Server execution failed

OK

Can someone clue me in on what's going on?

Thanks

Right. And we are still checking with Toshiba to see of they can suggest a
remedy. But until that ...

Cool. Seems a bit excessive if the drive is actually still working. But I
guess it never hurts to have another one.

No, this is on my wifes laptop. And a friend of mine did a remote access,
and found out that apparently, one of the windows updates did not do the
driver support updates for that CD rom. So, we are going to purchase an
external USB CD Rom. Thanks anyway.

Hi.

Is this the same drive you were having trouble with before?
I don't know, but it sounds like some kind of hardware issue to me. Maybe
try some of the steps listed on this page?

Afternoon all.
On a Toshiba Laptop with Windows 10, my wifes CD ROM does not show up in
“This PC”. We went into the Control Panel, and found it through that. We
confirmed that all of the drivers are up to date. But when we place a disk
in the drive, it will not show up. Any suggestions/recommendations? This
laptop does not use JAWS as my wife is fully sighted. Thanks.
