KR> Projects for Sale

2020-08-17 Thread Robert Russell via KRnet
Hi All;
I am trying to follow up on an email I received when I first posted about my
projects. It was from someone in Calgary and for whatever reason I can't find
the info.
If that person is on here and reads this, could you please contact me.
There is another fellow in Edmonton interested in some of the parts and I
thought it might make sense if the two of you could share shipping for the
parts or aircraft together.
Thanks and I hope all are getting some flying in these days and staying
healthy.

KR> projects for sale

2020-06-20 Thread Robert Russell via KRnet
After a long debate with myself, I have decide to move away from the airplane
projects that I have been trying to get to. I am interested in selling
everything I have that is Kr related and there is a substantial amount.
I have two projects, one is a Kr2 that is currently registered in Canada and
that is in process of a total refurbishing so is currently dismantled. This had
been a flying Kr with 64 hours on it but it ended up sitting as it passed
through a few owners who did not do anything to it. I have all the paperwork
right from the build of this airplane. It was an early plans build and came in
at a bit over 400 lbs. with the retracts.
I also have a Kr project that I picked up in Ohio that is well on the way ,
fuselage tail feathers and wings all done and the workmanship is very nice. I
do not have any paperwork for this one.
I also have a lot of extra parts , cowlings, turtledecks, fixed gear
brackets(new) canopy frame , extra center and outer spars, a complete box of
foam and some engine mounts. There are also a few propellers.
I have a zero time Revmaster R2100D that is complete and ready to install.
Life has taken a few twists lately and so I am just looking to get stuff off my
plate.
I would prefer to sell this lock, stock and barrel as a package and whoever
buys it can probably recoup their investment after they decide what they want
to keep.
At this point I would take $4000.00 Canadian for everything and although I know
we are struggling with border restrictions, I think it would be possible to
work around that somehow.

Subject: KR> Sprucing up my KR2.

Hi there all.

I'm trying to acquire spruce to remake the centre section main spars of my
damaged KR2

2.160 inch by 2 inch by 84 inches.

Spruce and Spec don't carry it anymore. They have everything else but nothing
close to the '2 inch plus' square top and bottom main spar caps. I've got
feelers out all over the world and I'm waiting for replies.

Either that or if anyone has got a completed set of main and rear centre spars
kicking around. There is a set here in the UK, but that would mean breaking up
a boat and wing completed project and I can't face doing that.

Cheers Colin H.

Re: KR> top end overhaul

2019-06-03 Thread Robert Russell via KRnet
  HI All;
I should have been more clear in my original email. My friend and I did the top
overhaul so I knew what all went into it. I had run it a few times just to get
it running right. I did install a brand new carb the other day and yesterday, I
tied it to the back of my truck and ran it hard for about an hour. WOT gave me
2900 static and temps were greata ( cowl off) I have sensors on only the back
two cylinders so one was in at 200 and the other 175-180. This engine has
always run about that speed so pretty confident in it now and hope to get
flying in the nest several days. (weather right now)
Thanks to everyone for the input

The top end was recently overhauled on my Great Plains 2180 and I have it
running pretty well. I have run it on the ground a bit to get it tuned
properly. I want to do a few ground runs and also need to go over a few other
things on the airplane before getting airborne but I am wondering about methods
to do the seating of the rings without actually going flying at this point. I
don't want to glaze the cylinders while I am running it in. All thoughts are
welcome and thanks in advance guys for all the great info shared here.

Bob,
I have flaps and the rear of my seat is just 1/2” or so off the plywood floor ,
at the lowest point.
The RR canvas sling seat , I use , is hung on an aluminum tube on Adel clamps
at the rear spar. The seat cushion is 2” astronaut memory foam that is quite
comfortable.

I’ll try to photograph it tomorrow and sent a few pics.
My canopy is totally stock height.

Re: KR> canopy and turtledeck

2019-03-30 Thread Robert Russell via KRnet

> +++

Bob,

I wouldn't worry about the taller canopy affecting airflow over the
tail.  My KR is longer but I have a rather tall canopy and standard tail
surfaces, no problem.

Hi Larry;
Thanks for the info;

I was out at my hangar today and took a really good look at the seat height and
discovered that the back of the seat was about 1.5 inches above the top of the
rear spar. I think it had been reworked by someone at some point because it
looks like it was originally located close to the bottom of the rear spar. I
believe it was raised to accommodate the torque tube for the flaps which appear
to have been added after the initial build.

I removed the seat and did a modification to the fastening system for it and
and to the seat itself. It looks like I can lower it about 2 inches, maybe a
bit more. so that will help.

I have been looking on the KrNet at some of the builds trying to find others
who have flaps to see how high their seat is off the bottom at the rear spar
but am having trouble finding pictures of that assembly. I know there are quite
a few guys who have flaps and I thought there may be a better way to set up the
linkage that would allow me to lower the seat even more. That would save having
to raise the turtle deck.

Anyway, if you or anyone else can direct me to pictures of that assembly that
others are using that would be helpful. Also, those with flaps, how high is the
rear of your seat off the bottom of the rear spar?

All in all it was great to spend some time working on the airplane even though
it was only +1 C today. I am kind of regretting that I am going to be away for
two weeks now that I have the building bug .

As always, thanks in advance to all.

KR> canopy and turtledeck

2019-03-28 Thread Robert Russell via KRnet
Hi All;
I know there has been some discussion on this previously and I did look in the
archives. I found some info but just want to clarify a couple of things. I was
worried about the canopy height on one of my projects and decided to measure
the height on both projects I have.

On Kr ... C -GSJS which is plans built and very true to the original concept, I
have 17.5 inches from the seat back ( longeron height) to the bottom of the
turtledeck. On Kr # 2 that same measurement is only 14 inches so no wonder my
head hits the canopy.
I was planning on making the turtledeck removable on this one anyway so am
working on the best method to get a straight ,clean cut along the longeron and
will follow the fastening methods used by a few of the guys who have removable
decks.

What I am wondering is, if I raise the turtledeck and canopy, fairng in the
area between the front deck and canopy frame to streamline and be pleasing to
the eye, do I have to do anything to the rudder and horizontal stabilizer to
reflect the added 3-4 inches of height of the turtledeck? That is to say, will
the added height interfere with the airflow over those surfaces? I also intend
to make the HS wider and leave the elevator the same as it is now so if I have
to do anything else, now is the time.

The weather is getting a bit better up here in Canada and I am determined to
get some progress made on both of these KRs.

The other thing I am curious for feedback on is this. C-GSJS as I said is true
to the original and has no starter. I would feel better if I were to add one to
it. The magneto is fastened by way of the original X type of bracket and I
don't think there is a way to put a starter in as it is close to the firewall..
6.5 inches firewall to front of engine mount. I have spare mounts that I could
use but that moves engine forward about 2 inches or a bit more. That would
allow me to attach a Diehl case and starter. The thing is of course the W+B
will be way off. I was wondering if removing the battery from the firewall and
mounting it further back in the fuselage would be the best way to try and get
the W+B back in place. The other mod is also to swap the header tank ( one
large tank) for a small header tank and put tanks in the stub wings as they are
open currently, or into the wings themselves. I will be doing the tank mod
anyway to prevent the CG moving around as fuel is burned.

I have been doing a lot of epoxy work on tables that I build and am pretty
comfortable with the West system now so want to get on these.

As always, the expertise and advice of those on this KrNet is always
appreciated and sought after.

KR> Revmaster for sale

2018-09-05 Thread Robert Russell via KRnet
Hi All;
I am not going to be using this engine and so am offering it up for sale... I
have too many projects on the go and the one this engine was for is being sold.
For Sale
This is a totally rebuilt zero time Revmaster 2100RD with a yellow tagged mag
just done at Eagle Magneto. It is dual ignition , new cylinders, pistons etc
with a Revflow carb and straight exhaust.I am asking $4500.00 for it and it is
ready to go. This engine has full history at Revmaster and Joe told me it is
not restricted to a wooden prop. Please email me at pi...@mts.net if you would
like to discuss further.

KR> Top end overhaul vw

2018-06-23 Thread Robert Russell via KRnet
Hi All
I have dismantled the top end of my Great Plains 2180 which is still on the
airplane and it occurred to me that replacing the pushrod etc. may present some
challenges.
Has anyone done this or should I actually remove the block from the airplane?
Basically just want to hone the cylinders, install new rings and lap the valves.
Thanks

KR> Gear legs

2018-06-09 Thread Robert Russell via KRnet
I am wondering if anyone has a template or dimensions that I should cut the
Grumman gear legs down to for my Kr2.
The original weight of C-GSJS was just over 400 lbs. I don't want to make these
new legs ( removed the original retracts) too stiff but sure don't want them to
fail.
I will also be adding tubing for the brake lines as per the archives emails.
I will have to check the measurements but I think 1 inch thick and quite wide.
Thanks

KR> Wings

2018-06-05 Thread Robert Russell via KRnet
I picked up AN6-7A bolts and with the correct grip length the wings were pretty
tight even before tightening.
Also I made progress on the Diehl skins and was able to remove the spars and
ribs today.
I will have to remove the rest of the vinylester now and then the skins will be
good to go.

KR> Wings

2018-06-03 Thread Robert Russell via KRnet
Thanks Mark,Sid and others for the replies.I feel much more informed and
confident regarding this now.
I guess the only other concern I have is as I mentioned about grip length on
the AN6-5A and threads being inside the Wags. Any need for concern there or
should I just stay with those.
I will look up torque specs on the AN6-5As and tighten them up.

KR> update re wings

2018-06-03 Thread Robert Russell via KRnet
An update... after processing all the info I read on the archives ,it occurred
to me that I might be going at the wiggly wings all wrong. I had occasion to be
at the hangar for a few minutes today and decided to try the AN6-5A bolts in
some of the other WAFs that I have .In some, they were a bit loose and in a
couple of other sets they were a snug fit. I have a feeling that the WAFs on
that project were made to a slightly different size and I am trying to nail
that down. I think they might be 10 mm or thereabouts
Also, I think that the AN5-6A may not be correct anyway because of the grip if
I am reading things correctly the shear load should not be anywhere on the
threads and the WAFs plus washers are definitely on the threads on those bolts.
Now the search beg ins to find the correct bolts and hopefully that will
resolve my issue . Worst case scenario is either ream the holes to a known and
functional size or replace the WAFs and I have a few sets that are not drilled
at all. Every day brings a new adventure .

KR> wing tip movement

2018-06-02 Thread Robert Russell via KRnet
I have spent some time in the archives and there has been discussion about
this. When I trial fit the wings on the project I posted pics of the other day
in the Facebook site, I did not tighten the nuts onto the bolts (just on loose
) but yesterday I checked for movement at the wing tips and there is indeed
movement. My question for all is ... before you tightened the nuts ... was
there any movement.
I did have the wings on my other project and as I recall even with the bolts
just through the hole there was no slop or movement.
It seems to me there should be none ideally and that perhaps the holes are not
as close tolerance as they should be.Not an insurmountable problem I understand
and no hurry on this project either.
As always,I look forward to hearing all thoughts.

KR> parts available soon

2018-04-29 Thread Robert Russell via KRnet
Hi All;
I will listing a whole group of parts and a project for sale soon. I had been
gathering bits and pieces as well a few project Kr2 airplanes but have just
managed to find a Kr2S which don't come up very often. Because there are only
so many hours in the day and also we have a limited shelf life ourselves,I am
cutting back on the number of things I have to try and finish. I will be
concentrating on the 2s so will sell the other parts and the project I picked
up in Ohio. I have pictures of that project which is well on it's way and will
take some pics of the parts but just a heads up, I have turtle decks, canopy
frames , engine cowls, front decks ,gas tanks, complete tail groups, a pair of
the AS5045 wings, a set of Diehl original wing skins and some other stuff. I
won't be looking for big money but would like a fair price. I am also motivated
to move this stuff out of my hangar and somewhere it will get used instead of
gathering dust.
I hope to be cleaning up my hangar and getting this together in the next few
weeks but was just diagnosed with a hernia which I an seeing the surgeon about
next Saturday so until that is done I can't do any heavy lifting.
I am in Winnipeg , Manitoba ,Canada and so not sure what the deal is getting
parts to the U.S. but I think it not too convoluted especially if someone
drives here to get them. I am not sure if I can transport them into the U.S. or
not but stuff can also be shipped.
I am very excited about the 2S and it is still in a stage where I can determine
how I want to certain things.

The Prop Bank was fairly short lived, partly due to lack of interest,
and partly because one of the first to use it took several months to pay
for a prop that was sent to him, even after many requests to either
return it or pay for it. I thought it was a great idea, but it turned
out to be an annoyance instead.

Just to see if there's any interest, how about anybody with a prop to
sell post details to KRnet and maybe we can swap some props around?
Send a $250 deposit or something, and try it to see if it'll work. If
nothing else, it'll give you some guidance on what size might work best
for your plane.

I will say that Ed Sterba will make you a VW prop to fit whatever you
want for $400 (which includes shipping), for anything under a 56"
diameter prop (or somewhere around that diameter), and maybe $450 for a
longer one. They are great props, and he has a pretty good feel for
what works on which airplane/engine combination, and will re-pitch it a
bit for free if needed.

You've probably seen this already, but check out
http://www.krnet.org/kr-info.html for some idea of which props work on
which airplanes and engines. Yes, this needs updating, but several
requests for updated information have yielded no updates.

official retirement was yesterday and I intend to spend some time on my
projects ( weather permitting) but once spring arrives I will be all out on
them. I will also have parts to help others gain ground in their builds. Once I
take stock of what I need I will post a list of available parts.
Keep working guys , and I agree with Mark... mine won't be pretty but I need to
have them flying.

Re: KR> Parts to save?

2017-10-04 Thread Robert Russell via KRnet

 Hi Noel;
I live in Winnipeg so am not that far from Regina. I have a few KR projects and
have had a look at your pics. I was one of the guys who said to check it again
and I will say that based on the pics and as Mark said there are a few concerns
that are more evident in these pics.
I guess the main point is that if you want an S then yes start over. Some have
cut and stretched a regular Kr but that seems a bit too much to me.
I have quite a few Kr parts on hand so we should talk. Many can be adapted to
work on an S model. I have bought some yellow cedar with the idea of eventually
building an S too.
I was just at my first Kr Gathering and was so fortunate to get a flight in a
Kr2S with Robert Pesak. It is an amazing airplane. I did not get up in a
regular Kr so I can't make a real comparison as to handling but I know there
were and are lots of guys with a regular Kr who are quite happy. That said ,if
I was starting from scratch.. it would be a 2S with several modifications as
seen at the gathering and on the KrNet.
Feel free to give me a call 204-885-2443 .

Noel,

It’d be a shame if that boat really isn’t up to snuff. I might have
someone else take a look at it before you write it off, because that’s a big
step backwards. Your KR is right about where mine was when I purchased it, and
I think a lot of builders run out of steam at about that spot.

I would have to agree, have someone else take a look. From the pictures I can't
see anything that is scary. There is a lot of knowledge here that will help you
if there are repairs that need to take place. I also am not looking at building
the perfect airplane but wanting a safe, finished one that I can fly and modify
as needed.
Try to find a builder in your area to show the things you see as issues.

I've gotten in the habit of setting the timing without the prop on my
VW. There's a lot less drama, and the timing is far easier to nail down
perfectly when there's not a 100 mph wind blowing everything around.
This probably doesn't work if you have a vacuum advance though, which
you shouldn't. And obviously, don't run it for more than a couple of
minutes. It won't heat up too much in two minutes.

I have a lightened flywheel on the back also, so running it for a few
minutes without a prop doesn't concern me. The risk is that if you
start it, you'd better make sure it's not going to hit 6000 rpm
instantly...definitely start with throttle barely cracked, because
there's no load on it at all.

Another thing I've learned with mine is that priming it with oil is not
easy, if it's a fresh rebuild. I've learned to lube the oil pump gears
with thicker grease that improves the seal between gears and housing,
put a little extra oil in it, and leave it sitting with the tail up in
the air overnight to make sure the oil is available to the pump. Then I
backfill with more oil through the oil pressure sensor hole (near the
distributor) to fill that oil passage up, and hopefully put more oil
into the pump. Then I fill that NPT hole with a mechanical oil temp
gauge and spin the engine over with the starter with all plugs removed
and spark plugs removed but still connected to plug wires, and grounded
(laid across the cylinders as a ground), so I can check spark at the
same time).

Contrast this with the Corvair, where you simply fill the engine with
oil, use the distributor drive gear to spin the pump up for a few
seconds until you hear oil splashing all around the engine, reinstall
the distributor, and fire it up!

I picked up the landing gear yesterday from the guy I bought C-GSJS from. It is

size or if I need to come up with a different plan.I did search the archives

God thought Larry... I will look into how to do that but in the meantime I
swaged one with the other tool that I got from AS which incidentally covers the

than two individual crimps on one sleeve. These crimps look exactly like the
original sleeves on the old cables and are within the gauge specs.
I am a slow learner until I have all the facts.

To eliminate any doubts about your cables do a load test after you
swage them. Just don't exceed the load capability of the cable.

Re: KR> swage tool

2017-05-06 Thread Robert Russell via KRnet
Interestingly, I just watched an EAA video where the guy was making a 3/32
cable. He used two sleeves each with one crimp and spread out from each other
by about 1/2 inch.
It seems there are many ways to accomplish the same end goal of strength. I
kind of like the two sleeve idea s we all know redundancy in systems is a good
thing along with regular inspections.

KR> swage tool

2017-05-06 Thread Robert Russell via KRnet
I received my swaging tool and gauge from AS yesterday and checked the crimps I
had made with my Princess Auto tool. they are correct and so now the only thing
I am trying to come to terms with is that the info I read says 2 crimps per
sleeve but there is really only room for 1 per sleeve unless the 2 crimps
overlap the ends of the sleeve which leaves a bump/ring around the middle of
the sleeve. Someone did say that 1 crimp is sufficient and I assume that would
just be in the middle of the sleeve.
Any other thoughts on this?
Thanks

KR> building stub wings

2017-05-04 Thread Robert Russell via KRnet
I have my stub wings stripped down to the spars and am now looking at getting
them rebuilt. Waiting for supplies to do new cables but in the meantime I am
wondering if trial fitting the wings onto the airplane (this is a previously
flying one) as I make the ribs to go in that area would be a good way to get
everything aligned back to original. I was thinking that if I do that and they
form a good continuous wing shape all the way to the fuselage, then angle of
incidence etc. would all be just as the original setup which from the logs
indicates it was a gentle and solid flyer. I am just wondering what everyone's
thoughts are on this and if you see any pitfalls to that instead of trying to
build the stub wings according to plans etc. as it seems each airplane is a bit
different or unique.
Thanks to all for putting up with all my crazy ideas and giving me such
valuable advice.

KR> go no go gauge

2017-05-02 Thread Robert Russell via KRnet
I just ordered the go no go gauge from Aircraft Spruce for checking my
nicopress sleeves but I have a few questions. The tool I bought is from
Princess Auto and is not an actual nicopress brand. I have been reading a lot
about swaging and wondering if others have used sleeves/tools/ gauges that are
not all from the same company.
If you use the gauge and the fitting is in the correct slot does it really
matter if you use a matching tool?
I know that is the common thought but is that just because of liability issues
for the companies because of use on certified aircraft ?
I want my cables to be safe but also don't want to spend a small fortune on a
tool I will only use a few times.
The gauge should arrive by the end of the week or on Monday so I will try a
test fit first but would appreciate thoughts on this issue.

replace spars ( have some others that are new ) and WAFs all together.

I did a bit more work on cleaning up the center spars on one project and was
going to change or repaint the WAFs but I can't seem to get the bolts to loosen
up. I suspect they may have been epoxied into the spars. Can't turn them and
they don't move with any gentle persuasion. Has anyone run into this? I gave up
on that and proceeded to start cleaning up the WAFs that are on there. They
have a bit of surface rust in a few spots due to paint coming off and sitting
over time but are still solid . I will have to repaint them with a small brush
I guess
Also, in removing the glass from the tops of the spars, there are a couple of
spots where small slivers of the top cap came up with the glass. Nothing major
so I think I can fill them in to level with a bit of extra epoxy before final
glassing. Any thoughts?

To echo what Steve said, the rigidity of the carbon fiber blades on the IVO
prop as well as the Warp Drive props are known to cause harmonic vibrations
that are detrimental to the life of the crankshaft in that the harmonics can
cause crankshafts to crack and eventually fail. It is strongly recommended
to use wood or wood core props only on VW conversion engines.

Of course with Experimental Aircraft, you are allowed to build contrary to
recommendations. But please be aware of the potential issues.

KR> RAF rib templates

2017-03-27 Thread Robert Russell via KRnet
I have been searching for templates for the ribs used in the RAF 48 Diehl wing
skins and don't seem to be having any luck. I see the ones for the AS5046 but
cannot find the others.
Can anybody point me to those? I also saw a link on Craig's Sea Fury page to a
pdf for the Diehl wing skin installation but it goes to the Diehl site and is
not active. Does anyone know of another place to download that or could send it
to me?
Thanks

KR> Diehl ribs

2017-03-24 Thread Robert Russell via KRnet
I have a set o Diehl wing skins but since I am having to remove the bad spars
that are in them(just fastened to one side) I need to get new ribs as well.
What are acceptable practice? Should I be contacting NvAero and try to buy just
the rib sheet or can I make them out of something else?

KR> project

2017-03-13 Thread Robert Russell via KRnet
After cleaning up my hangar yesterday,I spent some time going a bit deeper into
the darker of the two projects.
John Shaffer had some comments when he saw it about the plywood used as some of
it was delaminating. Turns out the web on the spars is too thin and I suspect
is just some type of mahogany playwood. The builder also seems to have used
wood screws and also left nails in the plywood that poke through the spruce
formers. I am pretty much writing this one off and will salvage as much sitka
as I can. It was largely for parts anyway and came with the Diehl skins, as
well as all instrumentation and cowling, turtledeck, Also some hardware that
can be salvaged.
Once I sort through, I will have a lot of parts available to purchase. If
anyone needs items please keep in touch with me through my personal email.
It was still great to spend a total airplane weekend even though it was around
-20 Celsius.

KR> pics added

2017-03-12 Thread Robert Russell via KRnet
Thanks to Mike I have it figured out and added a few more pics.
These are all of the darker of the two projects, it has the deck cloth over the
entire fuselage and the shots of the inside show the additional light coloured
wood which I think was added to accommodate the older style canopy. My question
is, is this common practice and does it matter what kind of wood it is ? The
deck cloth is extended above the line where it joins.
I picked up a small cutoff toll from Princess Auto ( like your Haror Frieght )
and was going to cut the turtle deck off today.
Also, not sure about the "control " cab;e on this one. Does anybody else have
that type of thing on their KR?
Thanks again for the help guys

KR> turtledeck question

2017-03-11 Thread Robert Russell via KRnet
In the pictures I posted , there a few of the inside of the fuselage on the one
project. I assume the additional wood at the top above the sitka longerons is
there to raise the turtle deck to accommodate the old style canopy.
What I am wondering is if that wood is providing any structural strength or
just to raise the turtle deck. I don't even know what kind of wood it is but
the whole fuselage is covered with a layer of deck cloth as well.
I would appreciate any thoughts about this area.
Thanks

I am a new member: Hi, guys! Can anyone tell me whether there are any other
liquid-cooled Great Plains engines flying? It is a 2180 VW with compression
upped from 7/1 to 9/1. Mine has been flying for nine years and I LOVE that
engine. But before the maker went out of business (retired) he told me only
a very few had been sold. Would like to hear from any other owner.

Hi Bob,

The link din’t work for me.

I think you need to put the pictures folder in your “Public” dropbox folder.
Then share the link to the pictures folder within your “Public” folder.

why do you think the original fuselage design is not strong? I dont
