The wooden part of a midlands bobbin is quite small and very light weight. I
think the spangle ring and its beads may be necessary to give sufficient
weight. Antique "thumpers", a alternate midlands style, are much thicker and
don't have a spangle right.

white = bleached,
cream = half bleached,
ecru = 1/4 bleached,

I think pinning it at foot long intervals is not a good idea. You will end
up with pointy scallops. Elizabeth Kurella's method works better, I think.

Yes, Russian tape lace uses a pivot pin. There are several ways of doing
fudge stitches to help you get around a very tight curve. Sometimes called
"turning stitches". The one that appears in the DMC book on tape lace is the

I understand your question. My impression is also that point ground began in
the late 1700s. We have paintings of Empress Josephine wearing lace of a
style similar to these. Laces with that style sometimes used point ground
and sometimes Mechlin ground. Once we get past that style Mechlin gro
