[lace] re: Lace Hats
Christine Mirecki has designed lots of hats, several of which are sold published separately, but the ones which fitted Karen's description (rounded crown, wide brim) I have only seen in the first book, Sommerhute, which has twelve patterns in all. She has just brought out another book of hats, which I haven't as yet seen (and won't buy anyway, as twelve lace hats would be enough for anyone!) [lace] Kopek/whirlpool filling
First, I am NOT a Russian lace expert! After looking aat Clare's photos I scrolled down the rest of the page and my eye was held by a yin/yang photo made for the 2017 motif exchange. The centres are what the French call 'araignees russes' or Russian spiders (they were probably the first I'd ever made, the original had leaf tallies which I couldn't get to look like anything!) Going back to Clare's photos - I don't think the first two are at all the same thing, there's no sign of the sewing that is done at each spoke, whereas the third, surrounded by a definitely Russian braid, has the tresses and sewings... But as I say, I'm not an expert, far from it, that's just my little centime's worth! [lace] Cilaos needle lace
Cilaos is on the Réunion Island, a French Departement It is a form of very elaborate cutwork, and the centre where it is still made (and sold at astronomic prices) is known as the 'Maison de la Broderie' or Embroidery House. Although a lot of Madagascar embroidery is sold in the Reunion, I didn't see anything vaguely resembling 'les jours de Cilaos' in Madagascar - but I didn't travel around a lot. Here is a link to a site which gives basic instructions; it's in French, but even without a translation the photos give an idea of how it's made. When I went to Cilaos, in the pelting rain after a long hike, the Centre was just shutting down for the day, so I didn't get to see the work being done, just to buy the wine Cilaos is also known for (not worth the walk, we poured half the bottle away) and lentils, which are better than the wine. [lace] Re: lace copies
Alex said: I donât mind friends sharing or teachers supplying my patterns at no cost, Thank you Alex! A friend and I have subscriptions to different lace publications, but both of us, if we see something in the other's publication, order our own copy of that particular number. My problem is more with out-of-print books. in my early days of lace-making, I saw and fell in love with Pat Read's Milanese lace books, but they were way beyond my capacities at the time; A couple of years later, when i felt I could tackle them, You couldn't find the for love or money - well, yes, but a LOT of money on ebay. A friend lent me hers for a shile (what's the copyright position there?), and I eventually was lucky enough to get a second-hand copy of the first book from Roseground. The same thing happened with Bridget Cook's Idrija lace , but there were other books on the subject, though not so detailed. I was delighted when they were reprinted, and am now working my way through mine. I perfectly understand the feelings of designers, for whom what they earn from a design is ridiculous compared with the time spent, the knowledge and skill required, not to mention the inspiration. And how galling it is that even that minute sum is pirated away. But there are a lot of frustrated lacemakers out here who can't get designs legally because they're out of print! (I may say that the only prickings I download are those which are offered free on sites such as LOKK - or Gon Homberg's site - for which, much thanks, Gon!) [lace] List is quiet
I too have been busy clearing my pillows for a week's course of Cantu next week, after going to Le Puy for their annual couvige. You can see some photos here: https://goo.gl/photos/sAaZnvYsF8nEE96x6 Both Marie-Thérèse Bonniol and Denise Etienne wer there with their salt-crystal lace; Denise's seemed to me less brilliant than when I first saw it eight years ago; she says the problem is the dust. Marie-Thérèse Bonniol had two pieces I haven't seen before, but hers are under glass. I asked if they altered with time; she said that the originals, done in 2001 hadn't budged at all, the only time she had some trouble was when she took them to an exhibition in the north of France, they weren't framed, and the weather was wet (as it often is in the north of France). She had to remove them to a drier place before the salt dissolved..; Apparently she hasn't done any "salty' lace for several years. Missed Florence Quinette - but I see she was in Australia! Lots of lovely lace to see, and although there seem to be fewer and fewer vendors - I miss Bart and Francis who have some beautiful unusual threads - there was plenty to tempt. Why is it that however many different sizes, colours types of thread you have, you never have the right one for the next thing you want to make? [lace] Re: searching for DMC Broder Machine in colors
Devon, I ordered three spools directly from DMC, having been told by all my local haberdashers that I'd have to order a box of each colour if they got it for me. As I'm in France, the postage wasn't bad (2.40⬠for 4 spools), I don't know what the cost would be for the States. I'm not up to creating, I used it for a Bedfordshire thistle and a length of Bucks edging, and had no problems with them. I used the DMC because it was a joint effort, and it had been decided we would use DMC because there's a good range of different threads, readily available in France, but Aurifil 50 (40 wraps as opposed to 42 for the Dmc) also has a lovely range of colours and a silky sheen. Brian, I don't think Monsieur Roux is claiming to have invented a new bobbin, it's new for him, just as suppliers will label new threads they haven't carried before. I bought a tatting shuttle rather along the same lines at Le Puy in October, but didn't see any of these bobbins; I can confirm that he is an excellent turner, with a practical and imaginative mind - some time ago he came across a stack of pre-bakelite plastic (I can't remember the name) and made some bobbins and tatting shuttles. I don't know if the supplies ran out, or if they didn't have much success, because I haven't seen them since. What's more, both he and his wife are lovely, friendly people! If the thread is coloured: pendants, ear-rings, lace-bugs or butterflies from Claire Burkhardt's Lace for 10pairs (I have a stash of insects, so when asked for something to put in the witches' cauldron, or how to hide holes in a curtain nibbled by grasshoppers, I donate several lace bugs; what's more, you can mix colours to your heart's delight); if there's enough thread I may make a bookmark, or use it to try out a new pattern, or just make a band until the thread runs out. There are so many things to do with short bands of lace - put it on a pocket, a lavender bag, on a jute lace-maker's pillow. The real problem is taking the time to do a something little when you're itching to get onto the next big project, so I have lots of little ends that go into pin-cushions, but I top them with polyster filling, because I don't like the only-threads ones! In France, at least in our area, the patron saint of lacemakers is St Jean-François Régis. A lacemaking friend has a little medallion on her 'carreau'. Re: [lace] what to see/visit in Nice, France or the nearby area
Nice - Lyon is four and a half hours if you get a direct train, five if you change at Marseille, Aix or Avignon. The days of the absolute punctuality of French trains are in the past; my son had to spend a night in the youth hostel in Nice this year, because all the trains that accepted bikes had been cancelled the day he had booked due to some trouble elsewhere... 2013/12/11 dmt11h...@aol.com Arlene's question is a difficult one, requiring not only a knowledge of lace tourism, but also of French train routes. I have only visited the lace areas around Le Puy, including Retournac and Brioude in a car, something I wrote about in the Bulletin several years ago. In a car, it was difficult enough with some connecting roads so minimal that they were only barely indicated on the map. Although I do not understand the French train system I am inclined to believe that all the trains radiate from Paris and that inter-city transport may be much harder. However, from what I hear, these trains from Paris are practically time machines. On the theory that it might be easier to go to a major city, one located between Nice and Paris, may I suggest Lyon, the second largest city in France, and a noted center for silk manufacture, an historical specialty of the city. It is possible to go to a silk center and see the jacquard looms. In addition to that the Musee des Tissus (Michelin 3 star textile and decorative arts museum) in Lyon has a small, but very satisfying and very high quality display of lace in it, or at least it did when I was there a few years ago. Hi Arlene and everyone, Let's imagine you were on a trip and you ended up in Nice, France, and you have an extra day before you leave. Is there anything lace related in that city? Le Puy is a beautiful place, with a fine exhibition hall, next year (June to December) the theme is 'The finest circus costumes' - http://www.ladentelledupuy.com/index.php?page=diaporama not to mention Lacemakers in the street one week-end in June, and the 'couvige' or lace day the first week-end in October. Having said that, Le Puy may not seem very far from Nice, but by train you're thinking in terms of seven hours, with at least two changes... At a mere 120 Km from Nice, across the border in Italy, Cognes keeps alive the tradition of Alpine lace: http://www.dentellieres.com/Musee/Cogne/cogne2.htm (site in French, but the photos speak for themselves) Cognes and Nice are twin-towns, but I don't know if there's a train...
