[LegacyUG] I am totally stuck

2013-08-16 Thread Michele Lewis
The problem that I mentioned on the list yesterday, the 3021 error, I got no
answers here so I submitted it as a problem to Legacy. I haven't heard
anything back. I am in a total holding pattern. I don't want to add any
more information to this file until I can get it fixed. Exporting it to a
new Legacy file didn't work. If I export it to a GEDCOM then I will lose
all of my SW sources. I have so much stuff to enter and I am just sitting
here twiddling my thumbs.

Hi Michele,

As this seems to be a Microsoft Jet error I would try to be patient and
wait for Legacy Support on this issue. I only hope that you have been
diligent in backing up your files after each use of the program.

RE: [LegacyUG] I am totally stuck

2013-08-16 Thread Michele Lewis
This was a brand new file that I exported from Legacy to Legacy. It contains
only my direct line with no events and no sources. I had just started adding
things back in. I only added in a total of 7 birth certificates and 2 marriage
licenses as I scanned them. I was adding the very first event (1940 census)
and that is when I had the problem. I had back up as soon as I exported but I
hadn’t backed up yet after inputting the above. I usually back up once a day.

The question is more about what kind of processor your pc has, the amount
of RAM and Storage space, and then lastly the size of your file.

Currently my legacy file is 412,264 KB.
215,000 people
over 32,000 links for media.
and it runs great on a pc running an I5 -3450 CPU @ 3.1 gh, 16GB RAM, and 1
TB data storage.

Just FYI

I had a similar problem on my Dell laptop two years ago;  only with Legacy, all
oter apps seemed fine.  I did approach Legacy support about this, but were
unable to help me at that time.  If it's the same problem, then uninstalling
and reinstalling the program won't work, and splitting the database won't work.
As drastic as it sounds,  I have since rebuilt the OS on PC and the
sluggishness stopped.   Hopefully someone now has a better solution...Good luck.

Back up the Family File (File Backup Family File) then do a File
File Maintenance Check/Repair. After that do a File File
Maintenance Compact Family File.

After doing that, please update to the latest build 7.5.0.268.

That should speed things up

Also, it never hurts to run a good Windows clean-up utility like CCleaner.

[LegacyUG] Update Unsuccessful

2013-08-16 Thread Nancy Stevens
I just tried to update to the latest build of Legacy and received the
following error message:

Could not communicate to the network server, error 3.
404 not found.

It gave me the option to abort or retry. I aborted.

Then I tried to open Legacy (thinking I could just update to the latest
build later) and it cannot open. So I guess I need to finish the update
process now.

What went wrong and what do I do?

I am running the previous latest build on a Windows XP machine.

Thanks. Nancy

[LegacyUG] LegacyFS: Problems

2013-08-16 Thread Mike Fry
My initial good impression of the re-vamped FamilySearch is rapidly fading.
Whether this is due to failures with the LegacyFS code or the FamilySearch
website itself, I have no way of knowing. I am tending towards the latter.

I have an individual in my database who I have linked to FamilySearch. When
attempting to process the Possible Duplicates, of which there were a number, I
am running into the situation that I shell attempt to describe.

I first of all go through the list of Possible Duplicates, marking those who are
Not the same person, and then I click the Process Actions button. This has the
desired effect of removing the imposters from the list, leaving me with those
that bear closer examination.

I then select the first, matching Possible Duplicate and click the Same Person
button. This goes through the whole rigmarole of trying to merge the two
individuals on the website. This appears to go well. I then go back to the
LegacyFS screen, click on continue and then refresh the Possible Duplicates
list. To my dismay, the merge doesn't appear to have happened. The individual is
still in the Possible Duplicates list!

What's more, if I try to merge the two again, the FamilySearch website claims
that I am now trying to merge my Legacy individual with himself! The target of
the merge is still there but can not be merged because he's been deleted! This
is why I think FamilySearch is at fault.

It's pointless trying to contact FamilySearch. They take far too long to respond
to questions. This was working yesterday, and my software hasn't changed.
Roll-on the ability to merge records from Legacy :-)

Click on Help General Information, and a window will appear that gives
you some data about what you're running. If you've got the Deluxe
edition running, it will say that in big friendly letters at the top of
the window, and you'll see your customer number in one of the fields.

I expect that the file where your customer number is stored was not
over-written when you downloaded and installed a fresh copy of the
program, so when you opened it up it already knew you were a Deluxe user.

Hope this helps. :-)

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy Slowing Down

2013-08-16 Thread Wendy Howard
I agree with the others - it probably has more to do with the machine
you're using, than your Legacy file.

Consider what your numbers are (as Jay described in his post - I5 -3450
CPU @ 3.1 gh, 16GB RAM, and 1 TB data storage) and think about what you
can upgrade if it's necessary after you've done the maintenance that
Sherry recommended. Especially hard disk space - if your hard drive is
nearly full, you need to either delete some unwanted files or get a
bigger one, as the computer needs free disk space to function properly.

5,000 individuals in yor Legacy file is not very big at all. If I
recall correctly, Legacy only stores the path to your multimedia, so
they should not have a big impact on the file size.

In any case, I would not recommend splitting your file into smaller
ones. You loose all the advantages of having it all together, and could
end up with duplicate people across the files where you've forgotten to
update some of the data on one or more of the files.

Hope this helps. :-)

Kind Regards,
Wendy

I have noticed lately that my Legacy program has slowed down

Re: [LegacyUG] Preferred Spouse

2013-08-16 Thread Ward Walker
If you navigate from a 1/2 child to you, you should see that child’s mother as
your wife. Otherwise you should see the preferred wife.

To mark a wife as preferred, you need to do more than just selecting her in the
‘wives of...’ window. You need to click on the ‘Set to Preferred’ button at the
bottom left of the window. Make sure there is an asterisk next to her in the
‘P’ column.

2013-08-16 Thread Lavern Hall
Hi, Deanna,

I agree with Kathy's comments. I
like what you are doing and
encourage you to continue
doing something you obviously
enjoy doing.

While your daughters and cousins
show no interest at this time that is
not to say that they will never have
an interest or that someone down
the line may not get the genealogy
bug and be most grateful for your
research.

As for the agricultural survey,I view
this as a fun and clever way to offer
statistical information. This survey
lends interest and is along the line
of charts, photos and in your case,
priceless stories.

Good luck!

I have been blessed with having much of my ancestry given to me by
interviews years ago, researching online, at libraries, and talking to
others. I do not have all the stories I would like to have for my direct
family and I don't go back to the British Isles.

As I am doing research often I come across a distant relative, am able
to add to their tree. I would like your thoughts on should I continue to
add to this. I am sure of these sources and they date before 1775.

I also have an agricultural survey, it is of some interest to me and is
included for someone look up if they wish.

My daughters are not deeply interested in genealogy nor are my cousins.
Should I take the time to determine how many sheep, goats, land, etc these
 ancestors had in 1860?

 Thank you

I run File Maint every night before I backup

If it gets slow again, check and find how much of your RAM is being used up
and if its anymore than 50% consider increasing that 8 Gb ram to 12 or 16
if possible
If thats not possible, consider using a 4 gb thumb drive as readyboost
memory

Here's a thought as a stop gap. Can you mark both genders as unknown and add
the actual gender in notes? Not ideal, but it should solve the problem in the
short run.

My two cents for what they're worth...

RE: [LegacyUG] Same gender marriage???

2013-08-16 Thread Jim Terry/Support
Legacy won't let you do a same sex marriage or partnership. This may change in
a future version of Legacy, but version 8.0. There is a work-around. Before you
start, backup the family file. The first steps are exactly what you do when
entering a straight couple. The change in sex is made in Microsoft Access.

After adding the couple in Legacy (one will be male the other female), make
note of their RIN numbers and close the program. Next open the file in
Microsoft Access. Here are the steps:

1. Start MS Access.
2. Click on File and select Open.
3. Type *.fdb in the File name field at the bottom of the window and press
Enter on the keyboard. Access will now see all files with a .fdb extension.
4. Browse to the directory where the family file is saved and open it.
Change the gender of one of the partners:
5. Open the table named tblIR.
6. The IDIR field holds the RIN numbers. Use these to find an individual.
7. The Surname and GivenName fields are self-explanatory.
8. The Gender field holds the sex of the individual: Male = 0 and Female =
1.
9. Change the gender to be the same as his or her partner.
10. Save the file and close Microsoft Access

To mark a wife as preferred, you need to do more than just selecting her
in the ‘wives of...’ window. You need to click on the ‘Set to Preferred’

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy Slowing Down

2013-08-16 Thread Bruce Uttley
Legacy is a 32-bit Windows program and cannot make any use of more than
something less than 4 GB of memory. If you are running a 64-bit Windows
Operating system with multiple application programs active or with
64-bit applications then more than 4GB would be beneficial. However if
Legacy is the only program running then any memory above 4GB won't make
the application run any faster.

Re: [LegacyUG] Same gender marriage???

2013-08-16 Thread Judy Wardlaw

Unfortunately when File Maintenance, Check/Repair is run following the
Access work around as Jim suggests, the Gender reverts back to the original
setting.

BNH

Another alternative to Jim's, not using Access. In this case when you run
File Maintenance, Chech/Repair husband and wife are replaced by Male/Male
or Female/Female and does not revert back. These are my notes from my report
at a past LUG (Melbourne Australia) meeting re same sex partners in Legacy.

Enter both partners in male and female positions in Family View.
You now need to change one partner’s gender, for instance the one designated
Female that you want to change to Male.
Click the marriage information bar for the pair and remove “replace wife’s
married name with husband’s surname”.
Go to Wording Options and replace Husband and Wife on the first line (Family
View) for Male and Male (or Female and Female). Then override the middle
section of the next line that reads “married “ with “has (or had) a
partner”.
If you need to cover a second relationship insert “next had a relationship
with” instead of “next married”.
At the bottom substitute “Partner” and “Partnership” for “Spouse”
and
“Marriage”. Make sure you click Save.
We found we needed to insert Partnership in the location field for the word
to appear as Partnership instead of Marriage Information in the Family View
but is better to leave it out for Ancestor report. Unfortunately partnership
will appear in your Location List and has to be ignored!

Certainly not a perfect solution. To prevent “she/he” creeping in instead of
“he/she” for some reports and charts, edit the event sentence definitions to
use [FirstName] instead of [He/She], that would get rid of some of the
problems - or use Sentence Override
so sentences for others are not affected. This addition was supplied by
Cathy in Western Australia. She usually uses [FirstHeShe] in Event Sentence
Definitions so that the First Name alternates with the pronoun in reports.
Note also in a Family Chart you still get Husband and Wife – not Partners.
However, the Descendant Chart seems to work and the Family View is
acceptable.

Legacy won't let you do a same sex marriage or partnership. This may change
in a future version of Legacy, but version 8.0. There is a work-around.
Before you start, backup the family file. The first steps are exactly what
you do when entering a straight couple. The change in sex is made in
Microsoft Access.

8. The Gender field holds the sex of the individual: Male = 0 and Female

9. Change the gender to be the same as his or her partner.

Are you sure about that?  The church has shifted it's position on gays (they
stopped objecting to gay scouts, for example).   If you ask them again, they
might approve it for 8.0.

2013-08-16 Thread Kathy Thompson
I think the reference to it not being included in version 8 is that version
8 is already nearing release and there is no time to make that change - not
that legalities etc need to be dealt with
perhaps in 8.5 or 9 we can hope
