Oddly enough, that’s how I saw the computer room. The son of old family friends
worked in Denver for IBM and was in Tucson on business.

According to their old blog, when MyHeritage purchased Legacy, they created a
synch feature.

https://news.legacyfamilytree.com/legacy_news/2017/08/legacy-family-tree-has-a-new-home-with-myheritage.html

It is NOT POSSIBLE to synch Legacy with Ancestry.com because Legacy is now
owned by Ancestry's competitor, MyHeritage. RootsMagic is also not able to
synch with Legacy because they are both competitor software. You can download a
gedcom from any of those sites and upload the gedcom to any of the other sites
but it will not synch - so no media will transfer.

You can only synch with Ancestry to RootsMagic or Family Tree Maker. Or, you
can synch with Legacy to MyHeritage.

I can't say any one is better than another. I only used Ancestry.com as my
primary because that is what I started with after FamilySearch.org, in the late
1990s, got rid of paf files. By then, I had used a few software programs on
cartridges for TI-84 computers but none transferred to the internet so I went
with FamilySearch because it was free. Then they got rid of paf files and I
once again had to start over. I then used Rootsweb, which Ancestry bought. I
decided to just pay for Ancestry annually, which is pricey, and keep my tree
there thinking they would keep being innovative so maybe I wouldn't have to
keep reinventing my tree.

Then, Ancestry got a little wonky and was up for sale and I got scared that I'd
lose everything. I purchased Family Tree Maker for the synching with Ancestry.
Then FTM stopped working. Ancestry blamed FTM and vice versa. I then bought
RootsMagic to synch and I quit using FTM. RootsMagic had glitches so I
decided, when I retired, I would scan everything I had and save by the persons
noted in what I was scanned (like letters/diaries/divorce docs you can't get
online, etc.). Lots, but not all, I had already saved to Ancestry's Gallery but
I wanted everything in one place by the person that I could always access if
any of the sites closed. I realized that no software was ever going to work
well permanently. I also was living in Florida and was afraid that I'd lose
everything in the event of a hurricane. We had already lost everything once but
it was when we were young and didn't affect the genealogy artifacts. I had so
much stuff it would have filled our entire car with no room for anything else.
It took me 6 months of daily scanning to get it all saved. I keep that in
Dropbox (a cloud) that I pay yearly for the account and in a stand alone hard
drive. The stand alone hard drive gets updated annually and I give it to one of
my kids to keep at their house.

All was well until it wasn't! (we moved from Florida so I now don't worry about
moving the stuff but the next generation will want things digitally so it
wasn't a waste of time). I decided last January to update my tree on
MyHeritage. I had gotten a deal on the membership because I am a member of the
National Genealogical Society. Then MyHerit

Whew! You have been having fun. Thanks for such detail. It was quite a story.
I, too, have been using a computer since before Windows. Dos was interesting.

According to their old blog, when MyHeritage purchased Legacy, they created a

https://news.legacyfamilytree.com/legacy_news/2017/08/legacy-family-tree-has-a-new-home-with-myheritage.html

Then MyHeritage offered me a deal for 10 years
which worked out to less than $100/year. I had not had a problem in the past
with deleting a tree and updating with a new gedcom from Ancestry but couldn't
do it in January. It wouldn't let me delete the old or add a new one on
MyHeritage. I decided to wait until after I travelled in April to mess with it
further. I tried repeatedly in May and then spoke in person in June with David
Horowitz at a conference I attended. He told me I'd lose all the DNA matches (I
also had uploaded my DNA from Ancestry and 23andMe) which was fine with me as I
figured I would just re upload those, too. He was unable to delete my tree.
Told me to bring my gedcom on a thumbdrive and he'd upload it. He couldn't do
it. I gave him permission to copy my gedcom and take it to IT. By August, I
hadn't heard anything from anyone at MyHeritage so I wrote to him. He forwarded
my concern to someone in IT who deleted my tree and told me to use Family Tree
Builder to upload but it didn't work. We went round and round and then he gave
me to someone else who didn't read any of the email chain and told me to do
what I'd already tried multiple times. I got an attitude and then I got pawned
off on another IT person who again tried to tell me to do what had already been

what David Horowitz did with the one I gave him in June). That IT guy sent me a

Thank you Lori! Are you saying that I could synch Legacy to myheritage.com?
Is syncing from Legacy possible with Ancestry.com or Roots Magic? If
there's a synch option in Legacy, I can't find it. I use only Legacy and
myheritage.com for my genealogy, and have no experience with Roots Magic. I
have an Ancestry account but don't use it. Are any of these other sites
better for syncing? Forgive me if I'm not asking the right questions. What
Cloud service do you use?

Thanks again,

Re: [LegacyUG] Gedcoms - asking for a miracle

2023-12-21 Thread Lori Samuelson
A gedcom can transfer the data. A synch transfers the media. I use the
following to maintain my years of work which has individuals close to the
number in your treeI use Ancestry.com as my main place to save both data
and media. I synch to RootsMagic and Family TreeMaker. I do that because the
programs offer different options and if one stops working I have the backup of
the other. This has happened in the past and I don't want to go through that
again. I can save a gedcom from Ancestry.com and upload to Legacy, which I also
use, since there is no synch option. It took me 10 months and way too much time
with MyHeritage's IT Department to get that gedcom working on their site. I
like MyHeritage but I don't like their Family Tree Builder which has a known
bug. Even so, I was told several times by MyHeritage to just follow the
directions to use Family Tree Builder. Finally, I requested that I upload my
gedcom to IT and have them do it. They agreed and then said there was a problem
with the gedcom. Odd that none of the other software companies had issues with
it. So, I asked for my money back. Within a week they were able to get the
gedcom uploaded. Amazing, right?! Since I don't update the MyHeritage tree, in
the past, I'd just delete the old tree and then upload the newer gedcom every
year or so. Never had a problem until this past January. Took until October for
them to figure it out. I wouldn't have been persistent over this if I didn't
find it useful to connect with my eastern European family who uses it. I also
save to a stand alone hard drive and Cloud. Paranoia works when trying to
preserve your hard work.

my 60,000 and growing tree, to be uploaded without their cumbersome one-by-one
loading of media? I was told to upload my Legacy 9 software to their
FamilyTreeMaker, and that it would transfer the media as I have it in each
individual's Media Gallery. I didn't spend more than 5 seconds to see that it
didn't work. The first thing that jumped out is that I am married when I have
marked in the Marriage Box the line that says "No Evidence that this couple

So I'm asking for a miracle - Is there a way that I can share what I have in

Are you using Windows 10? If so, one of the "standard" folders is named

Hi Valerie

Exactly what do you mean by a GEDCOM file coming as a word document

1. Are these files which you have been sent

2. Are they files that you have downloaded and where from

3. Are they files that you have created

Why do you think that they are word documents? Is the file name .ged?

How are you trying to open them? Per se, there is no default program defined in
Windows to open these files.

Normally, one would use a text editor - Notepad or Notepad++ - to view these
files.

Otherwise one would use a genealogy program like Legacy to IMPORT the file and
convert it to its own file format.

Can you please let us know exactly what is happening, why and where the files
are and what are you trying to do with them.

Re: [LegacyUG] gedcoms coming in as word documents ?

2019-01-02 Thread Chris Hill
Hi Valerie

Exactly what do you mean by a GEDCOM file coming as a word document

1. Are these files which you have been sent
2. Are they files that you have downloaded and where from
3. Are they files that you have created

Why do you think that they are word documents? Is the file name .ged?

How are you trying to open them? Per se, there is no default program
defined in Windows to open these files.

Normally, one would use a text editor - Notepad or Notepad++ - to view
these files.

Otherwise one would use a genealogy program like Legacy to IMPORT the file
and convert it to its own file format.

Can you please let us know exactly what is happening, why and where the
files are and what are you trying to do with them.

Regards

Chris

Daniel,

I have custom events in my TNG site. Have you confirmed that the events did not
even make it into the Legacy export GEDCOM? When setting up the export, there
is a customize window where you can include and exclude various things. Ensure
that you have not accidentally excluded events there.

Hi

How do I create an export file that includes certain events that I created (ie:
military attestations).
When I try try to import my file to TNG my events will not migrate it seems
that only notes make the journey so to speak.

Thank you.

Make sure you have the Admin>Custom Events set to "allow" for each type

Did you export everyone with Tag 1 into the GEDCOM?
Click the record selection button on the GEDCOM export screen
Select all records with an individual tag of 1
Make sure the check marks are in the three subordinate options about

 Descendants
 Entire Descendant Line

You want, most likely, just the Descendants.

If you look to the right of the ***All Spouses*** you will see a Spouse
button. If you click that you will notice that your anchor person's
spouses are listed. If there are more than one, you can click a specific
spouse and then your ***All Spouses*** will change to just that one
spouse. This option applies only to the anchor person.

If a direct descendant of this anchor person has more than one spouse
those spouses and any children they had together will be in the focus
group. What won't be in the focus group will be any additional
spouses the direct line's spouse had (does that make sense?)

For example, if I did the descendants of my 3rd great grandfather, both
of my 2nd great grandfather's marriages would appear and all of the
children he had with both wife's but his second's wife's first husband
will not appear nor any children she had with him.

Now your second question. When you are creating a gedcom I always
recommend that you leave it at the defaults (Legacy gedcom) that will
create a gedcom that has the most information in it and any of the top
programs will be able to read it. The only time I would crank it down

 9. Click OK in Focus Group dialog box
 10. Click Close in GEDCOM Record Selection dialog box

I export the file and then import it into a new fdb file. George D Lane
shows up and all his children by his 3 wives. Their names are listed as
unknown. His descendants show up down to me but none of his descendants'
 spouses are listed.

What am I doing wrong? I want the descendants' spouses listed (e.g. his
daughter Isabelle's marriage to my great-grandfather; their son's marriage to
 my grandmother, etc.)

 Subject: RE: [LegacyUG] gedcoms

When tagging or using a focus group there is a big difference between the
 options

 Descendants
 Entire Descendant Line

You want, most likely, just the Descendants.

If you look to the right of the ***All Spouses*** you will see a Spouse
button. If you click that you will notice that your anchor person's spouses
are listed. If there are more than one, you can click a specific spouse and
then your ***All Spouses*** will change to just that one spouse. This option
applies only to the anchor person.

If a direct descendant of this anchor person has more than one spouse those
spouses and any children they had together will be in the focus group. What
won't be in the focus group will be any additional spouses the direct line's
spouse had (does that make sense?)

For example, if I did the descendants of my 3rd great grandfather, both of my
2nd great grandfather's marriages would appear and all of the children he had
with both wife's but his second's wife's first husband will not appear nor
any children she had with him.

Now your second question. When you are creating a gedcom I always recommend
that you leave it at the defaults (Legacy gedcom) that will create a gedcom
that has the most information in it and any of the top programs will be able
to read it. The only time I would crank it down to one of the lesser
options is if I was creating the gedcom for someone that didn't have one of
the top programs or I was doing it for a specific website. For example, if
you export to an Ancestry.com tree format it takes into consideration what
Ancestry can handle as incoming information. To get an idea, you can change
the format and then click the Customize button on the right. You will be
able to see exactly will, and won't be exported for that format.

Thanks, Michele. You're right - my C drive was not selected. Now all
gedcoms are showing. (I tend to use the word gedcom as a generic term and
what I really meant was fdb file.) But, now that all my fdb files are
showing I see I just need to click File, Open File to get to the fdb I need.
But I am having a new problem. I selected Add an individual and
descendants in my Focus Group and no spouses are showing in the file that
resulted. In the Focus Group list, the words and **All Spouses** are
showing at the end of the file name. I presumed this meant that was default
(to show spouses) but they are not showing. Also, my entire line on my dad's
side (all direct ancestors including spouses) is showing in the file,
although my ancestor that I have chosen to generate this file is on my mom's
side. Why are both these things happening? I only want to see my maternal
ancestor, his wives and children and all his descendants and their spouses.

Finally, if I don’t know the genealogy software of the person I am sending
the gedcom to, should I choose Basic?

 Thanks,

 Barton

Barton,
Just to make sure that a bug hadn't crept in I did this in my own file and
everything worked exactly like I expected. So here is what I want you to do.

Close Legacy, reboot your computer and then open Legacy back up. Now do a
check/repair on your file. Select File File Maintenance Check Repair.
Click Proceed. If an error is found select No so that the check/repair will
continue. If there are errors found, run the check repair again until there
are no errors. If there are any errors that Legacy can't clear automatically,
look at the log file that is generated and it will give you the information you
need to clear the errors manually.

Try the gedcom again and if it doesn't work this time I want you to send an
email to supp...@legacyfamilytree.com Put Attn: Michele in the subject line.
Make a backup of your file, data portion only, leave the other boxes unchecked.
Attach that backup file to the email that you send. As soon as I am done

I turned on Tagging.

I went to my ancestor and right clicked on Tab 1 above his name.

I clicked on Spouse in the Descendants Options dialog box and clicked on All
Spouses, then closed this dialog box.

I closed the Advanced Tagging dialog box.

All my ancestor's descendants' No. 1 tag is blue as well as their spouses.

I exported the file to a gedcom and then imported it into Legacy. No spouses

There was a problem recently with exporting a Focus Group to gedcom (some

An alternative method, is to Tag everyon in the Focus Group, then export

access Legacy for details. Hopefully someone else can enlarge on this.

2015-03-20 Thread Michele/Support
Barton,

When you go to Open File and you select the option to let Legacy search for
your files, that is the file search page I am talking about. At the bottom
there is a button to tell Legacy which drives to search. This might have
gotten changed to something other than the C: drive (assuming that is where
your files are).

Also, you said, “I want to be able to easily switch back and forth between
gedcoms.” Gedcoms have to be converted to Legacy data files before you can
open them and switch back and forth between them.

RE: [LegacyUG] gedcoms

2015-03-20 Thread Barton Lewis
Thanks, Michele. You're right - my C drive was not selected. Now all gedcoms
are showing. (I tend to use the word gedcom as a generic term and what I
really meant was fdb file.) But, now that all my fdb files are showing I see
I just need to click File, Open File to get to the fdb I need. But I am having
a new problem. I selected Add an individual and descendants in my Focus
Group and no spouses are showing in the file that resulted. In the Focus Group
list, the words and **All Spouses** are showing at the end of the file name.
I presumed this meant that was default (to show spouses) but they are not
showing. Also, my entire line on my dad's side (all direct ancestors including
spouses) is showing in the file, although my ancestor that I have chosen to
generate this file is on my mom's side. Why are both these things happening?
I only want to see my maternal ancestor, his wives and children and all his
descendants and their spouses.

Finally, if I don’t know the genealogy software of the person I am sending the
gedcom to, should I choose Basic?

Thanks,

Barton

Hi, Anthony,
Thanks -- I did that without a problem. However a weird thing is now
happening when I try to open the .gedcom.

I click on
FileImport fromGedcom.
It goes to the folder I have my .gedcoms in and I click on the file I want
filename.ged
It puts the name of the file in the Filename box/slot, and I click on
Open.

It immediately takes me to another window. Only the tail-end of the
filename is showing in the filename box/slot, and the only kind of filetype
showing in the lower right above the Open button is Legacy(*.fdb).
No filenames are displayed in the window and instead it says No items
match your search !!!

So now what do I do???

Re: [LegacyUG] GEDCOMs - exporting - problem with deleting a source.

2012-10-04 Thread Pat Hickin

so all I have to do is put it back in correctly and create a new .gedcom.
Which I hope to be able to open. Well, I've done that AND opened it.

Pat
