Newbie and questions
Date: Thu, 22 Feb 2001 06:32:24 - From: "Sundering Skies" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Newbie and questions Hello everyone! I've just picked up a 100CT a few weeks ago and am having much fun playing with it. I've got a few questions for you folks out there... Hopefully someone can help me. I didn't get the restore CD or floppy with my Libretto. Are all the files on those available on the net somewhere? Does any company out there make a car cigarette lighter adaptor for the 100CT? For those of you who's used both Win95 and Win98 on the Libretto, what are your recommendations for an OS? I've seen pages on overclocking the 100CT to 266MHz. Any of you have success/horror stories? Thanks a lot everyone! =) _ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com ** http://libretto.basiclink.com - Libretto mailing list http://libretto.basiclink.com/archive - Archives http://www.picante.com/~gtaylor/portable/faq.html - FAQ ---UNSUBSCRIBE--- mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]?subject=cmd:unsubscribe UNSUBSCRIBE DIGEST-- Use above but add DIGEST to the subject line... **
Giving up on my Libretto
Date: Wed, 21 Feb 2001 22:39:35 -0800 From: "Silvester, Chris" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Giving up on my Libretto Hi all. First, let me say a big thanks to everyone on this list. You all have been a great source of information and help in resolving issues with my Libretto 110CT. Also, I'm pretty bummed that the L has been discontinued - it's a great little machine, and I'll be persistently looking for a similar replacement (perhaps the Sony Picturebook - we'll see). That being said, I have a bit of Libretto gear to move, including the 110CT itself. Unfortunately, the 110CT is suffering from overheating and hard resets when it gets too hot. This can happen in anywhere from 1 to 6 hours or more. Other than that, everything works perfectly. If no one here is interested, I'll sell it all on Ebay. Here's what I've got: -110CT, not overclocked, no modifications, LCD works great -12GB HDD, correctly configured to make the whole drive usable, in original configuration with Windows 98 -32MB RAM Upgrade -High capacity battery, only 6 months old. -PCMCIA floppy drive -Enhanced Port Replicator -2 I/O bars (hard to find extras of these) -3 AC Adapters in all -Configuration Builder CD, and all Original Manuals. I'm open to offers, possibly on individual items if I get enough offers to cover most of the items. I have a 100CT into which I've installed a 6GB Travelstar DJSA-210 (don't ask) partitioned with Partition Magic (great utility) and set up Win95. In "Devices by type" it shows up as "Other Devices" and in "Devices by connection" it shows up under PCI bus, as "PCI Communication Device." Under "PCI bus" is listed the Neomagic display, USB Host Controller, IRQ Holder and CPU to PCI bridge, plus this goofy question-marked "PCI Communication device". Fdisk, format, and even use the free IBM Disk Manager program to create the partition in the Libretto, and clone the image to that. The Libretto needs to make the partition first, then you can copy things into it. If a desktop does it for a HD larger than 10GB, it usually won't work back in the Libretto - most likely due to different disk geometries being seen by both computers due to much older BIOS in Libretto 50 that doesn't recognize HDs larger than 10GB w/o extra help from software. d =) = adorable toshiba libretto The latest news and information for the Toshiba Libretto owner. http://www.silverace.com/libretto/ __ Do You Yahoo!? I am going to give it one last try tonight, before going to compusa to look for a card that Anthony recommended. So here is my question about the ethernet install. How can I let my libretto know that the floppy is no longer present? When I insert the ethernet card, the control panel always defaults to look for the floppy disk, and if I have an ethernet card there, I get a big delay. Also, what does plug and play mean? If you use an OS that bypasses the BIOS (eg. Linux) and sees the full capacity of the HD by itself, then you can put the hibernation partition at the 8GB limit (what the Libretto BIOS puts it - the Linux code doesn't replace the Int13 calls like EZ-Drive does). However, you may not even be able to do this at all if the BIOS is confused and can't even boot from the 20GB correctly w/o EZ-Drive. If you use a HD manager like EZ-Drive, you should test. It should let the Libretto see all 20GB, and put the hibernation partition at the end of one big 20GB partition, but no testing by users have confirmed this one way or another. This should work because upon boot to even DOS, the ez-drive program replaces the Libretto 50 BIOS's Int13 calls with software designed to see all 20GB, and the Libretto BIOS's hibernation function can now correctly ask the HD to give it the true 'end-of-HD' and put the hibernation partition there. Beyond that, forget it. The L50 BIOS is too old to see >8GB w/o help - easiest way is to use a HD manager like EZ-Drive on the Libretto, partition and format from there and off you go. Again, please test to see if with EZ-Drive/etc. it correctly puts the hibernation partition at the end of 20GB (vs. 8GB) and let us know. -- Oh, and do recall that some 20GB Toshiba 9.5mm HDs may have the CSEL problem where you must physically jumper the drive yourself to get it into standard Master/Slave mode as a Master drive. IBM's don't have this problem. d =) = adorable toshiba libretto The latest news and information for the Toshiba Libretto owner. http://www.silverace.com/libretto/ __ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! Date: Wed, 21 Feb 2001 10:34:14 EST From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: AW: setlcd.exe (was: AW: Help this fuul out) By Xin Feng (01/17/99) http://www.fixup.net/tips/setlcd.htm Toshiba's power management utilities for its laptops are 16-bit programs, which often conflict with Windows's power control. These conflicts are even worse under Windows 98. One of the hassles is that your laptop can not go to sleep reliably. For example, you set you Libretto to go sleep (or hibernation) in 15 minutes, but it won't sometimes. Another problem, far more serious, is that they cause more crashes. So it is good to use Windows 95/98's own power management solely. However, Windows 95/98 can not control the brightness of the LCD screen. This is too bad, because reducing LCD brightness is the most effective method to allow the battery last significantly longer between recharges. When I got what I THOUGHT was Toshiba's Win98 Power management utility ( the "hairy light bulb" what actually happened was one more power profile was added to Win98 power management called "Toshiba" and all it seemed to do was disable certain power settings. Where, or what, is the equivalent of the "hairy light bulb"? I would like this because among other things it allows different things to happen when I close the lid depending on whether or not I am plugged in. I don't think this is possible with regular Win98 power management. Thanks Pres Waterman W2PW c/o Patchogue Motors, Inc. At the 8GB mark or the end of the drive? I want 2 partitions on the drive 7GB and 3GB So the hibernation space goes between them or after? I had difficulty when I formated the last disk on my desktop and used partition magic. When I loaded it into the libretto there was a bios "BASIC" error and also the first 1MB of the drive was empty space (this is 1MB BEFORE the Primary Partition). I had to fdisk and format on the libretto from a bootable floppy.
