I had exactly the same problem yesterday when I built a Gentoo server for a
colleague.
I am not sure what kernel option fixed it though because I took the easy
route...
I had another almost identical (working) server from which I copied the
.config file and then did
make oldconfig
etc.etc.
I have another convert.
First to ADSL, then to IPCop and today we are setting up a Gentoo headless
server via ssh.
If punters could wait until February, we will be in our new house with a 8m
x 7m garage which I would be happy to provide for another Gentoo
Installfest.
