Have you got the latest version of flpsed? Only the latest version can import pdf's directly, otherwise you need to convert them to a ps file first. PDF2PS converts a PDF file to PostScript using GhostScript. You may need to modify the text of PDF2PS to set the correct path for GhostScript.

I had exactly the same problem yesterday when I built a Gentoo server for a colleague. I am not sure what kernel option fixed it though because I took the easy route... I had another almost identical (working) server from which I copied the .config file and then did make oldconfig etc.etc.
