I while back I installed Linux Mint, which is a lovely, lovely distro
and I am much pleased.
The only thing I baulked at was switching to gnome - mostly due to
unfamiliarity having used kde since early days.
I know there is a kde version of mint, but I believe it's better to
stick to a distro's

experience with Linux, dpkg and APT.
* Debian is a less user-friendly/desktop-ready base than Ubuntu. Expect

If what Ross says is correct, then replacing the drive would require
returning the computer to the manufacturer. If the warrantee is
expired, that could prove very expensive. Yet another reason to hate
UEFI - if this is correct.
