Turns out, the lyx file causing the crash in my 1.6.3 featured a huge

loading bookcover.eps, and then a couple seconds later crashed. This was
 a
reproducible error -- it happened every time in the same amount of time.

Using Vim, I replaced bookcover.eps with bookcover.pdf, a much smaller

 and the problem disappeared.

So here's my question for everyone reporting 1.6.x crashes: Did your files
include graphics? Did they include large graphics? Were any of the large
graphics .eps files? Was there anybody suffering a 1.6.x crash whose file
 DID NOT
 have graphic files?

If there's anyone currently able to reproduce this problem, would you be
 able
to use a text editor to whittle the file down to a small reproducer, and
 then
use the text editor to toggle the symptom by enabling and disapbling the
 big

You're using the DOS ftp client, right? Just tried it from here
(Michigan, USA) and it worked fine -- twice. Time is about 1500 GMT (or
Coordinated Universal Time, or whatever it's called these days).

Connection closed by remote host usually means that either the host is
having a bad day (software problems maybe) or it's currently overworked.
So it may be you're trying at peak busy times. Other than trying at
an off time, the only thing I can suggest is to ping and maybe
traceroute it. Try

C:\whereverping ftp.lyx.org

and watch the output. The main concern is lost packets; round trip time
is secondary. DOS will automatically send four pings (you can adjust
the number, but no need to). I pinged the server just now and got four
answers (0% loss) with an average round trip of 121 ms. (which is not
bad). If the ping output shows packet losses, there may be a problem
between you and the server, in which case

C:\wherevertracert ftp.lyx.org

may show you where the problem is (not that the information will do you
much good, unless it's in the first one or two hops). Traceroute
basically pings every router between you and the target, sequentially.

I edited the .layout file and added the statement:

Style TitleERT

then I used the TitleERT in a big ERT before the text. It almost worked,
except for some differences (at the e-mail font for example). Could that be
the fact that the .tex file in example uses another packages, like:

 \documentclass[12pt]{article}

 \usepackage{graphicx,url}

\usepackage[latin1]{inputenc}

I tried to add this at the preamble in the .layout file, but got an error.

Thanks so much Anton!

Your succinct description got me a much closer knowledge.

On my tiny bug demonstrator document, I used Vim to change lyxscale 50 to
lyxscale 51, after which the file became stable in LyX. Interestingly enough,
when I set it back to 50, it was still stable. So there's some kind of cache
involved. When I reboot (for power savings I shut down every night), I'll see
whether the 50 reverts to being unstable.

At this point, for me, by far the easiest way to deal with this (I won't call
it a solution) is to make sure no graphics are scaled 50% within the LyX
environment. That's a whole lot simpler and less risky than tampering with my
Qt4 version. Later, when I upgrade to Ubuntu K, qt4 will be upgraded for me.

Thanks

Turns out, the lyx file causing the crash in my 1.6.3 featured a huge

loading bookcover.eps, and then a couple seconds later crashed. This was

Using Vim, I replaced bookcover.eps with bookcover.pdf, a much smaller

So here's my question for everyone reporting 1.6.x crashes: Did your files
include graphics? Did they include large graphics? Were any of the large
graphics .eps files? Was there anybody suffering a 1.6.x crash whose file
 DID NOT

If there's anyone currently able to reproduce this problem, would you be
 able

 then
use the text editor to toggle the symptom by enabling and disapbling the

LyX thinks this is normal content, not something for before \maketitle. You
need to put this in some kind of TitleERT environment, as mentioned before.

 rh

I edited the .layout file and added the statement:

Style TitleERT
  InTitle 1
End

then I used the TitleERT in a big ERT before the text. It almost worked,
except for some differences (at the e-mail font for example). Could that be
the fact that the .tex file in example uses another packages, like:

 \documentclass[12pt]{article}

 \usepackage{graphicx,url}

\usepackage[latin1]{inputenc}

I tried to add this at the preamble in the .layout file, but got an error.

2009/7/27 Daniel Lohmann daniel.lohm...@informatik.uni-erlangen.de

Depending on the peculiarities of the latex class, more or less stuff has
to be given in ERT - maybe even the abstract. The example I have attached,
for instance, uses the IOS-Book class, which requires the abstract to be
defined within a special frontmatter environment. Because I did not want to
bother with getting the peculiarities of this class right into a LyX layout,
I ended up with a big ERT box in the beginning and only the real content is
 written in LyX.

The process: I usually use the latex example file that comes with the paper
class as template, activate source preview in Lyx (View-View Source, then
check Complete Source) to see what LyX would generate and then copy parts
or larger chunks of the LaTeX example into ERT until the result looks
 compilable.

 Daniel

I guess this is my case. I did a big ERT before the text (as mentioned
above) but something is still wrong. I'll try to do like you now, maybe it
works.

Thanks again!

Luis.

Thanks

Hi Luis,

This may not be exactly the answer you are looking for :-)

IMHO the front matter (the stuff that is rendered by \maketitle) is
the
most difficult part to get right into a LyX layout, especially with
paper

styles. Every paper style uses different concepts on how authors,
institutions, multiple authors per institution, authors with multiple
institutions, "thanks"-titlenotes, and so on have to be specified.
So even
with the well-designed paper layout files that ship with LyX (LNCS,
IEEE,
...) I usually end up using ERT in the front matter to get what I
need.

So if you are not going to write dozens of articles using that
style, I
would just not bother in getting everything right into the layout
and use

ERT in the paper to specify the front matter.

We know the problem, and we know we can't do anything about it
ourselves. We have now made a work-around so that the bug won't appear
in LyX 1.6.4.

That's also a known problem, which we can't solve yet.

Oh, right. Anton was discussing a different bug to the OP. So it
probably wouldn't help.

Hi,

And after a long delay:

Any and all suggestions are welcome!

Try

C:\wherever>ping ftp.lyx.org

and watch the output.

C:\wherever>tracert ftp.lyx.org

may show you where the problem is (not that the information will do you
much good, unless it's in the first one or two hops). Traceroute
basically pings every router between you and the target, sequentially.

I have no problems pinging that server from the linux network here in the
upper left corner of the US. Average round trip time was 201.681ms.

I edited the .layout file and added the statement:

Style TitleERT
  InTitle 1
End

then I used the TitleERT in a big ERT before the text. It almost worked,
except for some differences (at the e-mail font for example). Could that be
the fact that the .tex file in example uses another packages, like:

 \documentclass[12pt]{article}

 \usepackage{graphicx,url}

\usepackage[latin1]{inputenc}

Thanks

To cite myself:

"The best thing that I can think of in your case is
that you have run into bug #5957: If you scale down
an image with an odd number of rows to 50% (on screen),
Qt4.5.0 would crash."

See www.lyx.org/trac/ticket/5957.

Well, yesterday we found out that this bug is back in
Qt4.5.2, so I withdraw my advice to update Qt.. (for
now), but LyX 1.6.4 has a work-around for this.

Are you sure your connection from service provider is able to handle
FTP protocol? Have you ever used FTP for other sites? What is
happening when you use telnet ftp.lyx.org 21?

Off Topic: Database for citations?

2009-07-27 Thread Ralf Schaa
Hi all,

just wondering - instead of searching zillions of library pages to find the
correct citation (downloadable in BibTex, Endnote, whatever...), there sure must
be a webpage just dedicated to this sort of stuff ... something like
'http://adsabs.harvard.edu/' only larger ... couldn't find it however.
Any hints?
